It’s crazy how tough their feet are to support the weight of the cow but tender enough to allow objects to puncture. Love the videos!
Well it’s not so much that they are tender enough to allow punctures but it’s more that there is so much weight of the cow to help press it into their hooves

Honestly yeah it's kinda easy to just forget just the shear size and weight of a cow and that those legs and hoozes need to support it all
@@baileyjerman5573 it is surprising how much weight those 4 “skinny” legs can hold up. That’s why farmers aren’t fond of gophers.
A piece of stone about the size of a toddler’s pinkie fingernail punctured a backhoe tire on my site. Every time we pumped up the tire, it would deflate in 30 minutes. Drove us nuts until we dismounted the tire and took it back to the shop where it got a soapy water bath - sure enough, the tire started blowing bubbles and we found the bugger that caused the problems....

When building fencing for my sheep, I tend to have the rule that each dropped screw, nail or fencing staple is worth 200€, since that's how much money I'll lose if a sheep catches on in it's hoof and has to be put down. It's a good motivation for finding them when dropped.
That sounds like a really smart idea! Teach your kids/workers/friends/family too!!

A sheep dying in pain isn't enough motivation? 😅 Lol I grew up on a farm, too, but never did I get so detached from my animals to not be interested in their pain, even if you're angry sometimes when you have to pull some out of your breeding program for health issues bc it hurts financially.
When I was a kid, we were working the cattle on our farm. On the very back side of our farm, there used to be a rail road that ran through our land along our south fence. We plant wheat in the field along that fence and the cattle would graze on it during the winters until spring when it was time to bring them in so the wheat could actually grow to be harvested in mid June. Well, one morning while we were working cattle, I told my dad that it looked like my bull was limping. I say "my bull," because I raised him from a baby, bottle feeding him from the day he and his twin were born. Mum couldn’t or wouldn't feed them both and so I got to raise him. I named him Rocky. When the bull that had sired him had stopped siring other calves as much as he should have been, my dad decided to keep Rocky "intact" and we were to replace Ol'Joe with Rocky after he grew up. Anyway, I told dad that .Rocky looked like he was limping and so he told me to go get him… even when he was full grown at 2000lbs, I could still put a halter on him and lead him anywhere I wanted him to go… my dad, not so much! Rocky hated my dad….well, I got Rocky into the chute, (we call the "crush" a chute here in the US) looked at his right back foot and that poor bull had a RAIL ROAD SPIKE stuck in between his toes!!!!fhe spike part was actually digging into the back of his foot! No wonder the poor animal could barely walk!!!! My dad and my uncle, who is a vet, pulled and pulled to get that railroad spike out of his foot. When it finally came out, I swear that Rocky literally sighed with relief! When the chute was opened, Rocky walked out and came over to me and gave me his "hi mum head butt" and leaned into me and grabbed my hand in his mouth and started sucking on my fingers like he did when he was a baby… I miss that old bull he passed away one winter during a horrible ice storm at the ripe old age of 14! They usually live 10-12 years… but Rocky was stubborn lol… I believe had the ice storm not been so bad that year, he may have lived another year… he was a good bull and he made some beautiful babies! I sure do miss him…

I never knew this was a thing cows needed done or someone could make a career out of it...but I'm glad I found your channel...vids are so interesting and calming for me...and seeing the relief the cows get is amazing...thank you and keep up the great work
I would never think cows needed so many treatments, I mean, I knew by logic that as any animal and living creature they have health problems... but...
I can only remember most of these cows are for human consumption, like... they are food.

@@sholmes4593 healthy cow = healthy meat and milk. Also, healthy cows = more milk. Stuff like this can cause a cow to stop giving milk.
@@sholmes4593 most cows don't need much feet work usually, you try to breed out hoof growth issues and then you're mostly left with the issues like this video shows. We've had cows for over a decade now and we've thankfully never had any issues like this, we are pretty good about cleaning up metal debris though and we don't have much gravel/hard concrete that could smash gravel into hooves.
I personally have had a huge nail go completely through my foot, so watching you remove the nail from that cow's foot brought back so many memories but also made it just that much better knowing the relief that cow must have felt in that moment. You do such a great job helping so many farms and their cattle to stay healthy, so keep on doing what you're doing! 👍

I had the same thing happen to me as a kid. I was playing on boards and a nail went straight into my foot.
I personally would not want that 5 inch screw in my foot, my feet are nephropathy so I wouldn’t feel it either, but there would be blood all over the place.
These copies must feel so much relief after seeing him. Imagine being a cow and your feet just HURT but you have no way of understanding why, then this dude shows up and bam! You're better!
I grew up in a family with a few cows here in Uganda. I grew up to love them.
There are only 3 procedures I grew up seeing performed on them: spraying for ticks, drenching for internal worms and injection when they had ECF.
I never imagined hooves required a lot of care until this channel. It reminded me of limping cows, overgrown hooves from years ago. Makes me sad.
But now you know more than you did before and you can share that knowledge if you ever run across those things again.🙂👍✌
Yeah takes a lot here in the UK we tend to be more on top of these things than other places coz years and years ago there used to be a lot of animal neglection claims on a lot of farmers so we just keep on top now

I've never even heard about stuff like this, and there are people out there dedicating their lives to helping these animals with their hooves. Must be awesome to have a good impact on so many lives.
When I was 5 years old I stepped on 2 nails at the same time, one in each foot. They both had to be pulled out (thanks Dad). After dad pulled them out he gave me a tetanus shot in my arse. Not sure what hurt the most but I did spend the rest of the day crawling rather than walking.
Having experienced that and how vivid it remains in my memory to this day (60 years later) I will have to say that either the item in the bulls foot or the 4.5inch construction screw would be my least desired impalement.

This is why I love the Hoof GP. He takes the stone out, lets the cow go and they watch how she walks, and instead of just onto the next, they put her right back in when she still needs care. That is dedication!! I hope he keeps a jar full of these trophies!!

Surely the SCREWS would be better removed with a screwdriver, rather than just pulling with nippers. There's more chance of them breaking off & leaving a piece deep in the wound, the way it was shown on the screen.🤔
The problem with modern hardened screws is that they can easily snap off, leaving part of the screw in the foot.
Don't bend these modern screws when pulling them. Pull them straight out.

@@windhelmguard5295 Had a 3 1/4 inch nail shot sideways through my right foot once (nail guns can be dangerous..) The doctor walked into the room with a small tool bag, produced a claw hammer and pulled the nail out. Fourtunately they had given me some pretty serious pain meds, because even with those it felt terrible.

Graeme, have you ever thought about starting a "museum" with the stuff you've pulled from bovine feet? There's a gastroenterologist here where I live that has a display of items he's pulled out of people's stomaches and intestines.

but what cows have, is over an inch of horn or whatever it's called, so some of these weren't overly painful.
@@geoffrey6000 Maybe some didn’t make them as lame as the more dramatic ones but anything stuck in the horn can create major problems if muck and digital dermatitis gets in. Mainly my comment was about that massive *screw. I wish my foot healed as fast as the cows do after Graeme gets them sorted lol

I use to help out at a friends dairy farm during High school. (1986-90) I learned so much!! I was in the FFA and continued my learning through judging competitions and seminars. You wouldn’t believe it, I did all that and joined the military. The USAF, I had a chance to spend 6 years stationed in the UK back in 2000. LOVED IT!! Toured all over the place. Scotland, Ireland, and Europe what a time!! You have a great country!! Hated leaving!!

Do you keep the things you pull out? It would be unique to see all of them lined up like a show and tell.
I think the 5” long screw would be the worst. I stepped out a board and had 2 nail go into my foot about an inch each and it took about 3 months before I could walk properly again.
When I was like 10 I had an old rusty nail stab roughly 3/4 inch into my foot, luckily I was wearing sandals that stopped it from going further in
When I was a kid I stepped on a nail once. Never did it again. I'm 65. So, there is still time.
I am still vigilant around areas that could have hazards like that.
I can still FEEL the nail as it sank in to my foot 55 years ago.

Boi 3 months I step on nails all the time and go back to walking right after I've even had a nail hit my head and I started bleeding really bad and continued my day 2 hours later

This actually reminds me of a time when I was a kid. We were on a camping weekend to this little town a few hours up the coast (Australia). While walking along the beach, a box thorn stuck about an inch into my dad's heel and obviously he had to go to the local hospital to get it removed. The problem with a box thorn is that its needles point down and at an outward angle so pulling it out was really hard as the needles would dig into the flesh of the heel. As you can imagine, it took a while. Thank God for local anesthetic.....
So yeah, remembering my dad I can kinda imagine how these cows would feel and the pain relief you're able to give them.
Wowza! Watching all these at once is "impacting". When little, I was running out of the corn crib and leaped on a nail in a board. It was so painful, when I got the tetanus shot in my arm I didn't feel that at all. I feel for these cows and bulls for sure.
As I child I hated wearing shoes. I had blood poisoning twice and countless numbers of puctures, cuts, and scrapes growing up. I really do feel for these animals and I am happy they have someone like Graham to help them.

The summer before I went to college, I worked on a dairy farm. One morning, as I was cleaning the stalls, I stepped on a large nail which went through my boot and on through my foot. I can totally relate to the cows' discomfort. (I wasn't too upset though, because I didn't have to bale hay that afternoon) This video brought back some "wonderful " memories. Cheers!

Not doubting you, but how does a nail get positioned in a cow stall so that one can step on it? Had to be a fluke occurrence.
@@ownpetard8379 it was a large nail through a board that was covered by hay. It was an old barn, not in the best shape.
You might consider adding hemostats to your kit for some of these occasions! We use them in medicine when we need a good grip since they lock closed. Not great for rocks but probably better for screws and nails!
You should send him a couple of sizes. 😊

I agree, except that the screw head is ground to nothing. So I'd recommend needle nosed grips and unscrew instead of pulling

It's so interesting to see what gets stuck in their feet, it must be so painful. Also interesting is watching how you remove the stones, screws, etc. and the tools you use to do it. What a godsend you are to these poor animals. I just discovered your channel tonight. Will be watching more!

I used to work with cattle and did some hoof trimming but to watch you do it and do it well is a testament to your skill and dedication - and a good crush! I don’t know if you anesthetize them but I don’t notice any of them flinch. Good job and take care of your back!

I love your videos, I work at a horse ranch with around 120 horses and I sometimes have to take crazy stuff out of there feet, it always makes me feel so good knowing that they will get better now that there feet are clean. One of our horses went lame all of a sudden and I found a pocket of gravel under a thin layer of hoof so I cleaned it best I could and made a way so it doesn’t fill up again just like I’ve seen you do for cows since our ferrier wasn’t due for 2 days and he said it helped tremendously!

Personally, I would prefer not having a giant stone in my foot. I don't have hooves, so a rock would require a great deal of force to get it inside of my foot.
@@user-ok4pk2mp3e no I wouldn’t like that either…but it would be more likely for me to step on a nail that would go through my foot than for me to step on a rock that would go through my foot. And I don’t like walking in my bare feet so I step on rocks all the time with my tennis shoes. But I’m sure if I were to step on a nail in my tennis shoes, it could puncture through depending on the angle.

The cow with the 5in screw in her foot? You mentioned the stink and the puss. I know this is the type of think you catch the farmer up on. Do you know what he did from there? Vet, I'd assume? And was the cow still lame, but healing, the next time you saw her? I'd be interested in knowing more of her story if you remember.

When you pull a half screw out be aware to look further to make sure it didnt just break!! Something to keep in mind because them drywall screws will break very easy . Im sure you know this but a reminder aint bad every now and then
when you pull something like that out of any creatures foot, a medical follow up is usually guaranteed(swift, probably not. earliest availability for a farm vet ain't typically that soon since they get booked out doing general health checks)

@@DeathnoteBB grinder might not catch it if the broken part worked it’s way in a bit more. I would imagine that the veterinarian would have to come out for a tetanus shot and maybe an X-ray
I was thinking the same thing about the end of the screw still being in thereby since the end of the screw was visible… not to worry in that regard. But like you said I hope she gets meds and a tetanus. I would definitely want an X-ray if the end of the object was undetermined.
@@prcervi Umm I highly doubt there is any medical follow up after finding metal in a cows foot. Them getting a trim is top of the mountain . lol The cows we see are the lucky ones and before they call a doctor they would prolly call the butcher first.
Great compilation video. It is amazing what a cow can tolerate and still carry on relatively normally as some of them had done. Also amazing to see how much the quality of the recordings have improved from the earlier videos!

Jesus……those poor babies! Their on their feet all day and step on so much, it takes a person of pure heart to take care of such beautiful animals ailments and make them feel better
After recently stepping all the freakin way down on a 16° nail at work the other day, i can imagine these cows relief at having someone remove their discomfort. Bless you for your kind work.🍻

I can only imagine the relief of these wonderful beings. Congratulations on the excellent work and here's the suggestion: Make sure that the animal's paw is very dirty, but throw a jet of water before it even runs.the cleaning operation ok 👍🏻👍🏻
I love seeing you find something like the screw or tooth in a cows foot and then getting out and they can instantly walk better just warms me wee little heart

I grew up on a dairy farm I can't ever recall us having any of the issues I've seen in your videos...I spent most of my childhood and all my teen years until I was 18 working for my grandfather.
You must have taken very good care of your cows, I wish the farmers would come up with ways to prevent these types of hoof injuries from happening. Perhaps regular sweeps of the cow yard with a large magnet roller could help with foreign metal injuries. ❤️ 🐄
@@addiegraves3 That only deals with metal, sharp things come in many types of material. These farms are huge, it would be nearly impossible to try to eliminate those hazards.
