    *Edit: To clarify the name change - I had wanted to change my name since I was 10. Xillia didn't prompt the change, it just inspired what the change would be.*
    Big thanks to the devs of Warlords Awakening for reaching out and sponsoring this video, I've been having a lot of fun with it so far.
    Keep an eye out for a full gameplay and review video coming soon, and check out this link to learn more about the game: goo.gl/kYnuSc

    2. Abyss - The Greatest Plottwist
    3. Vesperia - The Greatest Adventure
    4. Xillia - The Greatest Character Developement
    5. Berseria - Greatest Battle System
    6.Tales of Zesteria - The Greatest OST
    What made Symphonia, Abyss and Vesperia so great and epic was that fact that the developers included the field map for traveling. With the field map the story felt more like an adventure being able to explore and discover the world around u almost felt open world. It made the world feel massive. That’s why those three will always be the top 3 for me. In the order that they came out. I hope the bring the field map back in a future title maybe after Arise. But prolly unlikely tho.

    I've been working my way through Zestiria as my second Tales game after Berseria, and I feel like the knowledge I have from Berseria really improves Zesteria, because of things like characters that were around before. Like Eizen and Edna's relationship and how Edna fits what you hear about her from Eizen. Or Maotelus' whole story. I don't think it would be a particularly good story without Berseria's story backing it up

    5) Tales of Graces F
    4) Tales of Symphonia
    3) Tales of The Abyss
    2) Tales of Berseria
    1) Tales of Vesperia
    Tales of Symphonia used to be in my top 3, but it got bumped down once I played Berseria and I couldn't move abyss out of my top 3 because it is one of the few tales games I played to completion. Tales of vesperia takes the top spot because of its characters, overall look, and the fact that it is the very game that got me into the tales series in the first place. I walked into my local gamestop on 2008 looking for a time killer and saw it sitting on the used rack. The cover art and name caught my attention, so I bought it and took it home. I was automatically hooked once the intro started playing. It felt as though I was not only watching, but playing an anime. Lastly, It also had a protagonist that was an adult and who was extremely down to earth.

    #2- Tales of Vesperia
    #3- Tales of Symphonia
    #4- Tales of Berseria
    #5- Tales of Xillia (Graces F and Phantasia were big contenders for this spot but in the end it had to be Xillia)

    Interesting list. I also have a big soft spot for Zestiria. It would be my #3 spot personally. I’m one of the very few who actually loved the combat mechanics. #2 is abyss because that was my first tales game. Then My favorite is Berseria. Love the characters, story, world, and the gameplay. I might give Xillia a chance btw. I own it, but didn’t get the chance to play it yet.

    • @DeltathRiylaan
      @DeltathRiylaan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ephinox I might be mistaken about this, but I don't know anyone who dislikes the mechanics in Zestiria. On paper, it's an amazing evolution of Graces. The issue was they're implemented in a clunky manner, the camera is busted, the game suffers from constant slowdown and graphical issues, playing in two player mode is burdensome at best and playing with 3-4 people is down right bad, the game is either wildly too easy at MOST parts and then has some oddly sloggy fights, and most of the side systems (cooking, Lord of the Land, item system) are pointless and too easy to ignore. A lot of the game showed promise and honestly, it could have been one of the absolute best in the franchise if it just had more time in development and hadn't been saddled by being made on the PS3 too, which caused a lot of the clunkiness issues.

    • @matthewsmith1779
      @matthewsmith1779 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ephinox
      Gracis F is far superior to Xillia. It's a far better use of your time.
      Game play is DEFINITELY better. Outside of Maxwell, Xillia's story is dry. It had the potential to be better but they fumbled it.
      Overall Gracis F is better in every way.

    • @MrOrdosan
      @MrOrdosan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didnt ahve stutter slow down issues,camera seemed fine for me. the big issue Zesty has is its gear system. the game implements too much grinding. im the "kill as I go" player. I dont skip things so im never underleveled, but i dont grind. so im never over leveled.
      also to the other guy. Graces F ends up being a cliche shonen jump anime. were the main character befriends just bout ever villian he can. While asbel is in my top 3 for "most bitchen coats" his character is on par if not worst than sorey for the "I'm the good guy"
      Xillia combat was also hella better, each cahracter had there own unique dodge ability, (loved jude's flash step and lets not get started on time freeze)
      and Graces F does have a nicer funtime cast...but the entire game feels pretty saturday morning cartoon

    • @turquoisemoon3654
      @turquoisemoon3654 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DeltathRiylaan Absolute best comment I've heard about Zestiria. Some people just hate the battle system and say it's garbage. There are problems with it but they are minor issues actually compared with the beauty of the rest of the game. The "oddly sloggy" fights are things that bogged me down only at the start but when you play it again they become manageable and do not take the fun out of the entire game as others claim.
      The game showed a lot of promise. I do agree. Zesty tried to introduce something new not only to Tales but to gaming in general... the ambition was there. I think that if they had more time, or probably the tech savvies to handle them, they would have been able to fix the rough spots.
      I wished others read your analysis to be "enlightened." I feel that the hate Zesty is getting is undeserved. If you do bring this up as a reply to a Zesty hater though, you might be called toxic or stupid no matter how systematic your analysis is... that's how the hate for Zesty has escalated, and I know it's not just about the battle system as they say. I'm glad I read this. ^_^

    1. Tales of Symphonia: it's not the best, aged somewhat, and might be seen as "generic" or "vanilla" choice but this game has a special place in my heart as the game that truly got me into the world of JRPGs, even more than playing the FF games. What it does I think better than most of the Tales games is having wonderful world building, a great ensemble of characters, and felt the most "adventurous" of all the Tales games.
    2. Tales of the Abyss: two words - Character Development. Arguably the best story and character dev. of any Tales game. Combat is kinda meh in my opinion though (kinda just ToS 2.0). The world building could use a bit of work but the story is just THAT good that it carries it to number 2.
    3. Tales of Vesperia: not the best in story, but the main lead and his group steal the show. Great ensemble and good twists along the way. There was just some fun with the combat and a decent world to explore. I also liked the themes and motivations of the many factions in the game. The definitive edition may make this even better.
    4. Tales of Berseria: the best of the modern Tales. It fixed Zesteria's combat, it brought another good ensemble. Dark themes and story with a very interesting main protagonist who is both a villain and yet sympathetic. It wasn't even weighed down too much from the ties to Zesteria. A must play for the modern day.
    5. Tales of Graces: personally I don't mind that most of the characters are mostly archetypes, that may be a turn off for some. Story is kinda okay to serviceable. However, it has some of the best skits in all of Tales, the funnies. There's not much in terms of development (Cheria's growth ends halfway), but the game is here for one reason: GAMEPLAY. It has one of it not the BEST combat in all of Tales. There is also a decent after story which makes the game longer and adds some needed closure.

    Tales of Xillia and Symphonia are definitely deserving of being the two top Tales titles. They both managed to spin a seemingly straightforward hero's quest into an emotional rollercoaster filled with heavy themes (eg: genocide, racism, murder) and plot twists without depressing the player too much (which is more than I can say for Xillia 2 which left me a sobbing mess for weeks).

      The battle camera is horrible, and the dungeons are the worse in the series. Xillia 1 was also the last true Tales game ever created. There was lots of missing content though that the series was known for because of time restraints. Tales Studio shut down January 1, 2012, so everything after that date was the series simply being destroyed, more and more features being removed and less and less money being put into them. Team Destiny & Team Symphonia are long gone, so Zestiria had a lot of outsourcing.

    • @davenhla
      @davenhla ปีที่แล้ว

      I liked it too. I thought the combat was really fun, story got a little filler once in a while but the basic story was good and they did it in such a way to leave a lot of mystery to it right till towards the end. I liked the characters, I thought there was plenty of humor to offset what could have been a really depressing world.
      People hate on the gear system but you can basically ignore it if you 100% the side quests and don't run from fights. That doesn't make it better, but it didn't cripple the game like some try to say.
      I didn't pick it up until Berseria was also out, but I played Zesteria first which set the stage to understand things in Berseria that would have felt weird otherwise. The concept of Malevolence was a lot more intuitive after they had spent so much time explainig it in Zesteria, for example.

My only real gripes were the map taking up so much screen real estate and soem of the landscapes being rather bland. Now to sign my death wish with tales fans, I actually loved Symphonia DOTNW from it's insight to its humor to it's love hate relationships of characters and villains to its plot twists to its monster raising. It's a very misunderstood game.

      222ckc the gameplay in graces f is pretty poor.. unless you use one of the magic/healer types then it’s actually broken. Removing tp in general just allowed for insane art spams and chains. I remember when I switched to the one captain with blonde hair and chin strap (I forget his name and it’s annoying bc he was like my favorite character) the game became a lot easier

    For me:
    5. Abyss- I love the characters and the thought of enhancing the Sorcerer's Ring. But it has many dungeons that I just don't like to go through, like the Gates.
    4. Eternia- The visuals were stunning, and the jump from spells being all freeze-time changing to full dynamic was a huge blessing the new Hardware could provide. Downside was Controls could feel a bit clunky at times.
    3. Symphonia- Frankly I think the game is almost perfect. Only two dungeons in it I don't like going through. Ymir forest and...that valley with the wind flowers. Not because they are difficult, but because they are slow and tedious to get through.
    2. Berseria- The cast sealed it for me. And the fact that Velvet was completely unrelenting in what she would do to meet her goal for revenge was a nice change from what I'm used to. (Compared to Kratos, who had the same goal and motivation. But he was completely one note until the 2018 game, so he got boring. Where Velvet actually progressed through her story)
    1. Vesperia- Literally the only game where I find all the characters fun to play as, even if I'm a sucky Judith. I like how it compares "proper" justice with the "vigilante" justice and shows that both sides can be needed because of fallacies in how they are performed. It's a shame that is COMPLETELY dropped once the Adaphagos shows up...

  • @Noumopia
    @Noumopia 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    5) Tales of Zestiria (I have to agree with you - Good developed characters are fundamental for a well made jrpg and Edna is just gold. That's not all though. While the story was carried out kinda.. unfortunate, the soundtrack is still one the best I've ever heard. Especially the ones from the four elemental dungeons. Awesome~)
    4) Tales of Vesperia (I thought about 'Tales of Graces f' for this spot as well regarding the "old man" - bonus. In the end the award goes to Raven from Vesperia. Such a charasmatic, semi-old guy but to be honest I was rather fond of almost the whole cast of the game, heh.)
    3) Tales of the Abyss (Such an intriguing and agitating story! Oh, the tears I shed after the fight between Anise and Arietta... Plus, I often find myself disliking the main character of a jrpg for some reason but interesting enough I cared for Luke, hmm...)
    2) Tales of Symphonia (Sweet childhood memories~ and the first Tales of - Game I've ever played so I'm aware I may look at this game though a big pair of nostalgia glasses.. but still! The twists and turns the story takes... being able to influence your party roster (and consequently the archenemy you face) by the actions you take throughout the game... it was brilliant! No other game of the series had such a huge replay value.)
    1) Tales of Berseria (Personal opinion differs and I was surprised myself that Berseria was able to dethrone Symphonia in a blink of an eye. But Berseria nails storytelling and oh, these wonderful characters, I really love ALL of them, especially Magilou

    • @Arelath
      @Arelath 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm, well it's quite hard to describe it without spoiling it, but I'll try to do my best. Basically the story centers around Luke, who is a total brat to put it mildly. After this one chaotic event happens, he gets thrown into the mix of a war between two nations, or well start of it. He has never been outside of his palace because as a kid he was kidnapped and as a result suffers from memory loss. Everyone initially hates Luke for a reason, but in the end you're going to love him. It's one of the more slow burn Tales games, but truly a masterpiece, especially in terms of writing. The party is amazing too, you're bound to love at least some of them, if not all of them. For me, it's the true 'older' classic Tales game, even more so than Symphonia, which happened to be my first introduction to the series. I hope that was a satisfying answer to your question :)

    So far Tales of Berseria is my favorite. Out of the many tales games I have played this one here touches off on elements that are not for the feint of heart. Each character has a purpose, and the story doesn’t feel as if they’re being pulled in a direction by force to advance it. The characters seems to be making the decisions of their own accord. They’re a band of misfits which given their background explained throughout the game shows how they came to be. They game excels on several points, story play, battle, character relations, etc. Though out of all the tales games very few protagonists are actually respectable. Velvet is one of them. The game does well to flesh out each and every character. Though her you see and feel her regret, her sorrow, her hatred, in short her own inabilities. Still she manages to keep it together most of the time and is rational most of the time. This game does well to feel a mixture of emotions including hatred for Artorius who causes such strife upon her. This game touches off on dark elements, but it is not poorly done, it’s progressed and explained very well. Each of the characters seem more like part of a family which makes them very relatable and lovable. I will stop the explanation here since it can take a while. In short this game does well to connect to the viewers, and really draws them into the story and the conflicts at hand, especially the protagonist, Velvet.

    My personal Top 5 Tales games (and Tales is actually my favorite video game series!)
    5. Eternia - My favorite 2D Tales, the combat was super fun, the world to explore was massive, music was really good, and I like how Reid changed as a character, his development wasn't as good as some of the other characters, but he definitely did change for the better as a character. I also like how they kept the main cast small, so it gave more time to characterize Reid, Farah, Meredy, and Keele.
    4. Symphonia - I'll started with the cliche statement of the fact that this was my first Tales, it's not as good as some of the other Tales games, but wow, Symphonia's world builds off of what made Eternia's world great, making it bigger, better, and more beautiful to explore and see, the combat (as long as you are playing the GameCube version), while not as fun as some later games, is still pretty fun and smooth. The cast is great too, while some characters can feel like cheesy early 2000's shounen cliche's, it's one of the things that made the characters fun, not to mention the soundtrack is once again, amazing, and the story is well written. And I'll be honest, I didn't think Dawn of the New World was that bad, I actually kind of liked it
    3. Xillia - This was the first Tales that I beat, and I truly think that this is the game that changed me as a gamer and made me the gamer I am today... I love this game, the story is great, the battle system is my second favorite in the series, I love the cast, especially Milla, Alvin, and Jude, and I like how they keep Elize's backstory dark without it being too over the top or cliche, they kept it realistic. Soundtrack, great once again (Motoi Sakuraba is a god at composing, there's only a couple OST's from him I didn't particularly enjoy), and I honestly thought Xillia 2 was great as well! I still like the first one more, X2 had a way better battle system and playing as Gaius and Ludger is super fun. -And Milla is my Tales Waifu-
    2. Vesperia - my favorite battle system in the series, so damn good! Felt smooth, precise, and fun, while the story wasn't the most original, the perspective it was told from is different, and great too, I absolutely loved how Yuri was different from a typical shounen protagonist, instead seeing the world in good, hopeful view, he saw it as a bad place, and was an outcast to society in ways, and seeing a story from a "criminals" prospective was pretty eye opening, I wish more games would do this. The graphics are incredibly beautiful, and still hold up well to this day, soundtrack is still amazing, and the cast in general is wonderful (especially Yuri, Raven, and Rita). Also, can't wait for the Definitive Edition to come out later this year!
    1. Abyss - The character development in this game, it's amazing, the way Luke grows and matures is amazing and really shows throughout the game, the rest of the cast is very good as well, especially Jade, Tear, and Guy, and between this games OST and Vesperia's OST, those are my two favorites in the series. Story is also very well written, the villains were great too (although I like the villains in every game on this list), and the way Asch changes by the end of the game is great, overall, Abyss is my favorite Tales game of all time and possibly even my favorite game period.
    Graces F is an honorable mention
    Of course all may be subject to change, but for now, this is my list of favorite Tales games (who knows, maybe Vesperia will dethrone Abyss as my favorite when the Definitive Edition comes out)

    100% agree with the DBZ analogy. The show is not bad at all, but Vegeta's character development is easily the highlight of the entire series, from DBZ to DBS. Without him, it would be worse. The only other character that could've held that role WAS Gohan, until they neutered him in the DBS. But noooooo, it's all about Goku. Onto Tales, Vesperia is my favorite hands down, with Symphonia at the number 2, but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Xillia. I heard some bad things about it, but bought it and had a good time with it. Still haven't played Xillia 2. Skipped Zesteria and Berseria though.

  • @Stephen_Adegun
    @Stephen_Adegun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have played:
    Abyss
    Xillia
    Symphonia
    Soon to add Vesperia to the list.
    Based on those three:
    1. Abyss - I blame part of my love for Abyss on nostalgia. It was the first Tales game I played - though not the first that I knew of - and that was when I was 12. I enjoy basically everything about the game, from the combat to the characters to the story. It's the main reason I'm biased towards the formula of Symphonia, Abyss and Vesperia. Abyss is also the reason I wanted to go into Game Design, which I'm currently in college for.
    2. Xillia - The second Tales game I played. Around 9th grade or so. I have not played as many of the Tales
    games as I would like. Again, I enjoyed just about everything about Xillia. It just lost out to Abyss in regards to which one I played first.
    3. Symphonia - Symphonia was the first Tales game I knew of. But since it was released when I was 4, I lack the same nostalgia that many people feel for it. As such, when I played it, I didn't care for it much. Granted, that was several years ago. I really would need to play it and Xillia again to see which one I prefer,

      It's the best Tales game. He must have never played it. Otherwise it makes no sense NOT to put it in a top 3, let alone a top 5. Only someone that didn't play it would try so hard to ignore it so much so that not even a mention to it is in this video. But footage wise, he used gameplay from the game so he must know 100% it blows the other tales out of the water.

Like how velvet suddenly break down so fast when innominat appears. I mean she just suddenly break down without much pressure.
      And a lot of stuffs are just so instant and rushed

    1. Tales of Vesperia; the only one I 100% completed, and I love the crew you get this time around, they end up feeling like a family of sorts, and doing combos in this game is so much fun.
    2. Tales of Symphonia; never get tired of playing through this game, it's definitely a classic. Also Pancake Time.
    3. Tales of the Abyss; the lore IS great, and I like the combat. I like the characters, even Luke lol, I can identify with his struggle to be a better person and establish his identity, and find his own meaning to live.
    4. Tales of Eternia; I'm playing through it for the first time right now, completely blind. Even so, I'm already placing it in this spot, for now... I'm really liking it so far though!
    5. Tales of Phantasia; (fan translation ROM) Symphonia was my first Tales game, this was my second, and I loved it. It feels like what I would expect a SNES Tales game would feel like, and the story is just as overly dramatic as a Tales game can be, while also being quite silly as well. You can see the beginnings of greatness in this game.

    4. Tales of legendia, I enjoyed it, I liked Senel and he remains my second favorite tales of hero
    3. Tales of symphonia/vesperia these two are tied for me, Both are just great namesakes for the series
    2. Xillia, I loved the game, and Jude was such a fun character to play as, his snap pivot was just fun and looked cool, not to mention I love the Jude/milla ship, Yuri lowell from vesperia is the only character I liked more than Jude
    1. Abyss, This was the tales game that really hooked me to the series, as well as the first one I ever beat by myself, I have such nostalgia for the game, and will always be a fan of it, it was my first true solo tales of experience, as My first couple symphonia runs were multiplayer.

    1. Vesperia - 1st title I played, nostalgia is heavy, favorite game all-around (story, characters, combat, world exploration)
    2. Xillia - absolute best plot I've experienced in the series, too many themes to count, almost every character is easy to get attached to, cast has amazing backstories and growth, character specific combat abilities, etc.
    3. Abyss - 2nd fav plot in the series, free running in combat (looking at you Symphonia), loved the whole idea of forging your own destiny, Ion and Tear exist
    4. Hearts R - favorite theme/concept of any Tales title, loveable cast, Chalcedony and Beryl exist, unique combat system, Shingu + Kohaku shipping being realized at the end
    5. Phantasia (PSX) - very enchanting game, able to define characters well without story arcs designed around their backstories, simple but fun combat, and feeling better about yourself when you kick Dhaos' shit in during the final fight (cuz it's way easier than the first 2 fights with him)
    This list is still subject to change, as I have yet to complete: Destiny 1 + 2, Eternia, Rebirth, Legendia, Symphonia 1 + 2, Innocence, Tempest (not too excited about that one), Zestiria, and Berseria
    Graces F doesn't get an honorable mention from me bc the great combat and fun cast don't hold a candle to the ass plot and the amount of retardation Asbel displays as an mc. I honestly would've preferred to experience the world through anyone else's lens. I won't even mention the part where you go into space and bring back a suspicious chic, which I was certain only existed to offer another boss fight to help the game feel complete in some sense
    Xillia 2 is a great game all-around, but fails to be worth mentioning imo bc it failed at the biggest reason I had for purchasing it: following up on the cast of Xillia. It's obviously presented as optional to keep up with the cast of the first game, which is great; if Xillia 2 had a plot worth keeping up with. Ludger has no personality, and after experiencing Xillia 1, you're likely not concerned with watching him play babysitter with the cast you fell in love with

    • @Jayo_businessmansavior01
      @Jayo_businessmansavior01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      THANK YOU!!!! FINALLY somebody said it! Xillia 2 is just not great at all, just how is this called a sequel?!! The story is not even consistent with the first Xillia, the debt system is stupid for many reasons, ludger as a silent character with no personality sucks, elle is annoying as hell the whole time with no purpose, and the cast is just pushed to the side while you are forced to watch the Elle and Ludger show. Whoever appreciates this more than the first game needs their head check, like forreal..

    Hah, we share the same number one spot! I also think Xillia is heavily underrated and often bashed for whatever reason.
    My pick is:
    5. Destiny (PS2, yes I used a translation guide)

      Carol The Wildcat it was bashed because it was rushed to be an anniversary title. You could tell it was too with the lack of major contents, only one Mystic Arte for each character when at this point, it should be at least 2. It’s still a great game though as I put it higher than Xillia 2 since I kinda find that game kinda annoying. Vesperia is my number one favorite which is the reason why I got a 360 at the time.
