  • This fly-through visualisation shows an artistic view of what the Tonkin Highway Extension and Thomas Road Upgrade will look like once complete.
The project will see Thomas Road duplicated from Kargotich Road to Wungong South Road and a 14km extension of Tonkin Highway from Thomas Road to South Western Highway.

All those massive concrete medians! Plant trees / plants along them and create some beautiful boulevards that mitigate the heat island effect

I like how on the roundabout intersections, they leave a gap in the middle so it can be upgraded to grade separated in the future.

Nice video. Hopefully something similar is in production for the Tonkin Gap Project to educate people how to use the new CDR.

Tonkin south of the airport needs to mirror Tonkin north of the airport.....freeway status all the way to Karnup Rd to ease pressure off Kwinana Fwy and Roe Hwy. The amount of traffic using Kwinana Fwy and then Roe Hwy to access the industrial areas surrounding the airport precinct every morning is the main cause of the congestion from 5am onward....If Main Roads refuse to upgrade Kwinana Fwy to Safety Bay Rd in both directions.....then upgrading Tonkin to freeway status is the ONLY resolution...

So long as there is no Traffic lights on the major intersections for Thomas Rd, and Tonkin Hwy, they really mucked up the intersection of Roe hwy southbound and Tonkin hwy north where there is lights.

@@sbm1978 I did not look closely at the animation no, with modern technology and planning there should be road routes that do not require lights.

Can we hurry up with the upgrades to Tonkin Hwy from Hale Rd to at least Kelvin Rd, please? Its an absolute nightmare and the assortment of traffic lights need to go. The amount of traffic the highway is now taking, especially with more land releases in the outer eastern suburbs, is blowing out travel times. It doesn't help the the road is also deteriorating rapidly as well - you could almost surf the waves in the pavement at the Kelvin Rd intersection!

We are blase about technology these days. The standard of visualisation is excellent, and I can appreciate how much work went into it. Could have used this coming back from the south-west of WA this past weekend. Onwards and upwards!

Really need a roundabout/ traffic light from Byford Plaistowe Blvd to Thomas Road as soon as possible. That junction is difficult to do a right turn into Thomas Road on a busy day.

In 20 yrs time you will have to replace the roundabouts with a bridge, can tell this is south of the river ,we only get just enough to cope

Because SOR was developed some years before NOR, much of the states industries therefore work was SOR hence where most of our population would have lived until urban sprawl pushed more toward NOR

It's Just a pity that the Main East - West Highway (Mundaring- Coolgardie) doesn't seem to rate the same importance! That should be dual Lane each way given the traffic on it!

Well I guess if they built it as 3 to 4 lanes each way to start with and as a proper Freeway ,then they wouldn’t have the fun of closing lanes for 4 years 10 years later to rebuild it to how it should have been in the first place. The State Government is running a surplus so it’s not like they can’t afford it now.
