Pretty sure the title is a pun of the book/movie called A Boy & His Dog. Not my favorite NES game but I appreciate the concept and it reminds me of when devs could be more creative and take chances.
Great review! This is a game I always wanted to play as a kid, it was shown in one of those "tips and tricks" books I got from Scholastic, but it was never available for rent and no friends have it. I got it some years ago, but still haven't gotten to it lol. I do fully intend to play the Wayforward remake that I have.
We had this back in the day so we ended up getting through it, but man is it arcane. The sections where you're underwater are brutal, since one wrong move and you're absolutely done. Ultimately it's one of the most creative video games I'd ever played, though not necessarily one of the best. The Wii remake was a lot of fun, but later levels got so much "you have to do this perfectly or you die" that I lost interest after awhile.
I used to play this thing back in 93' with my sister. She used to call the game "a bag of farts" for it's horrible and erratic gameplay. Good ol' times.
The corn field level had me fully immersed. That's what I call high fidelity graphics. The concept of this game sounds cool. I wonder what it could have been with more time in development. The story is a bit weird: so you are a boy with a blob and need to buy vitamins. Sure. Solid foundation. As soon as you have them though, you pull out your gun and go to another planet?! What kind of vitamins are they? Is this some weird aggro pill that transforms our poor boy with a blob into an angry texan bully spacefarer? Basically this whole game sounds like an excuse for David Crane to try to invent his very own blob-speech, but the smurfs outsmurfed him. Blob up, kids, we're blobbin' to Blobolonia to blob some blob-ass!
I always loved the _idea_ of A Boy and his Blob when I was a kid. I'd rent it every so often after I'd forgotten what I didn't like about it and then get bored pretty quickly. I think the mechanics are super cool - feeding a pet blob candy to make him into cool and useful objects! - but the tedium of some of the platforming and all that is just too much of a pain. I meant to pick up the Wii game back when it came out and fanned on it. I wonder what it goes for on eBay...
I have the Wii remake, and it's pretty great. It usually goes for around $15-$20 complete, but if you have a PS4, PS3 or Vita it's available as a digital title for only $9.99
"This time David Crane was not involved, or trust me, we'd know about it" Hahaha great content man! Subscribed! Btw I love your outro music. What is it?
I just goofed around in it as a kid. I complain how modern games don't include manuals, but as a kid, reading the manual was the last thing I'd try to do when I was lost in a game. Kids are dumb.
Yeah, that tune does jive for a bit! I really wish this game had more polish like you said, it really just needs a checkpoint after the cave system for me!
For myself, this was a brutally boring game and I only remember playing it as a rental (once). I don't love it when creators put their name before the actual game's title. The real star should be the game itself as not many people really care about who programmed the game in the end. The Gameboy versions graphics actually suit the game better than how it looked on the NES, and the Wii version is definitely the best out of the three. Alright.....gotta go now and play with my own blob. Thanks for sharing Trav! Cheers, Joe
David Crane's SNESdrunk Comment says this was a very useful video, this game always confused the hell out of me so this help make some sense of it

You're probably right on the title. And I agree! Lots of fun ideas here.
This channel is underrated! So binge-able
Thanks Charlie. You're my favorite side!

I wanna play the remake too!
Memories man! Rented this a bunch but could never figure it out.
Think you'll go back and give it another go?
I do own a copy now, its on my list to eventually beat!
Never played this one but certainly looks interesting.
I've always wondered where the backgrounds were either captured or who made them. Those city skylines look amazing for a game nearly 35 years old!

She was onto something!
Great review. I didn't know about the gameboy game. I'll have to look for it.

I wish there was a password or something you could get once you get to Blobolonia. It would have made this so much better!

I've been wanting to try it out as well. It's on my wish list.

My pal Briz put it together, details in description! Thanks
I really loved the remake.
I need to play it. Everyone is saying great things
I had this when I was a kid. It was so confusing at the time. I think the only way I saw the end was because of Nintendo Power.

I always wanted to like this game. It has a great and unique idea that unfortunately didn’t play well. Who am I kidding, I still like it lol
It oozes with charm! I think Crane could have used a few more weeks of development time to put some necessary polish on it.
I liked this game back in the day but I didn't understand it at all. This is mainly because I didn't speak english as a kid. ^^
Ha, yeah I bet that would've helped! I did speak English though and still didn't find it very intuitive.
A childhood fav. Could use polish. Love the music but could use some more tracks.

@@NESFriend Yeah that makes a lot of sense. For years, I never even got OUT of the caves.

Treat Joe's Blob with respect!
@@NESFriend I'm going to show this to my wife.
just calling him "boy" seems a little rude, he should have a name, This boy looks like a Morty to me.
