King coconuts were perfectly sweet & tender for juice, dessert as well for a curry! | Traditional Me

- There are variety of coconuts with various names in our country. At the same time one "coconut king" rules the rest of the coconuts as well. I am sure, now you must be wondering who is this king that rules the other coconuts! Yes this bright orange colour and adorable coconut is been called King coconut!
In the edge of the garden of our ancestral home, a new king coconut tree has come of it's correct mature age. I found it is very easy and quick to get in to the land from the side of the field than walking through the land itself! brother is the only person who can carry the entire bunch of about 30 tenderly matured king coconuts. So early in the morning I called brother and took him with me to cut and bring the king coconut bunch to our home. It was not much of a difficult task for him as the tree is a very short one with easy access to the king coconuts where anyone could hand picked them!
The perfect sweet taste develops inside the king coconuts only when they starts to get mature after finishing the tender stage! During this period, the king coconut shell starts to become hard, and the salty tasting water of the king coconut, gradually turns in to that unmistakable sweetness where the king coconut tender flesh starts to form inside its shell too. We also cut the bunch right on the correct time!
King coconut is a heavenly natural drink these days because of the hot humid weather and yet if one drinks king coconut sweet water after 12mid afternoon, it will be a sure invitation for phlegm related allergies due it’s high cooling effect. Brother as usual cut two of them and drank the moment he came home as he was very tired after carrying the bunch. Since I was planning to make a delicious drink, I didn’t drink at all.
Since they were tender king coconuts, their inner shells were very tender too. I made a dish out of the tender inner shell pieces (Kaha-kada) as it’s grandmother’s one of the favourite dishes. This “Kahakada“ dish is a very traditional, family recipe where grandmother used to make those days. I was taught how to cook this dish by my grandmother, in the same way that her grandmother had taught her. This dish is indeed a unique and a tasty dish where the pieces of the king coconut inner shells are boiled with salt, turmeric and garcinia which makes the pieces more tender and soft. This curry is very similar to traditional baby jack(Polos) curry.
I made a delicious and refreshing drink by mixing juice of a half melon, sour orange juice, king coconut water and mint leaves! To that drink I mixed the pulp of the king coconut(Londa) as well. The sweetness of the tender king coconut water mixed with the sour orange juice truly tingled the taste buds. Oh! how I love that fresh sweetness of this drink.
I couldn’t even believe when I saw the delicious dessert that our brother had made. His unique dessert was garnished with red pomelo segments that had given a beautiful look to it as well. When biting Into those sweet and sour segments with the pulpy custard, they enhanced the taste to a higher level. I truly loved his dessert as it was absolutely delicious. I even saw grandmother was enjoying it to her heart’s content too!

ළපටි තැඹිලි ගෙඩිය මෝරන්න පටන්ගත්ත ගමන් තමයි හොඳටම රස තියෙන්නෙ. එතකොට තැඹිලි පොල් කටුව හයි වීගෙන එන්න පටන් ගන්නවා. ඇතුලෙ වතුර ලුණු රසයෙන් පැණි රසයට හැරෙන්න ගන්නවා. ඒ වගේම ඇතුළෙ ලොඳ හැදෙන්නත් පටන් ගන්නවා. අපිත් තැඹිලි කපල තියෙන්නෙ හරියටම මෙන්න මේ කාලෙ.
මේ දවස්වල දවල්ට රස්නෙ නිසා තැඹිලි කියන්නෙ දිව්‍ය අවුසදයක් වගේ බීමක්. ඇඟ සිසිල කරන ගුණය වගේම මද්දහන පහුවුනායින් පස්සෙ තැඹිලි බොනව කියන්නෙත් සෙම ලෙඩ වලට ආරාධනා කලා වගේ. මල්ලි නම් ගෙදර ආපු ගමන් තැඹිලි ගෙඩි දෙකක්ම කපාගෙන බිව්වා. තැඹිලි වතුරෙන් රසම රස බීමක් හදන්න හිතාගත්තු නිසා මම තැඹිලි බිව්වෙ නෑ.
තැඹිලි ලපටි නිසා පොල් කටුව මෝරල තිබුනෙ නෑ. අත්තම්මා ගොඩාක් ආස හින්දා තැඹිලි කහකඩ (නොමේරු පොල්කටුව) වලින් වෑංජනයක් හැදුවා. කහකඩ වෑංනේ කියන්නෙ අපේ අත්තම්මා ඒ කාලෙ ඉඳලම හදපු එකක්. අත්තමගෙත් අත්තම්මා ඒක හදන විදියටම තමයි අපේ අත්තම්මත් මටඒ කහකඩ වෑංජනේ හදන්න කියල දුන්නෙ. කහකඩ වෑංජනේ හරිම රසයි. ලුණු ගොරක දාල තම්බල දිය ඇරල ගත්තම කහකඩ කෑලි තව මෙලෙක් වෙනවා. මේ වෑංජනේ හරියටම සම්ප්‍රදායික සිංහල පොලොස් වෑංජනයක් වගේමයි.
කොමඩු පලුවක යුෂයි පැණි දොඩම් යුෂයි තැඹිලි වතුරත් එක්ක මුහු කරල හදාගත්ත බීම එකට ලපටි ලොඳත් හූරල දැම්මා. තැඹිලි වතුරෙ තියෙන පැණි රහට දොඩම් යුෂ එකතු වුනාම අමුතුම මිහිරි රසක් හැදෙනවා. මං ඒකට හරිම ආසයි.
මම හිතුවෙවත් නැති විදියට අපේ මල්ලිත් රසම රස අමුතුම අමුතු අතුරුපසක් හදලා. ඒ හදපු අතුරුපසේ තැනින් තැන තියෙන ජම්බෝල රේණු වලින් අමුතුම ලස්සනක් එකතු වෙලා. ඒ ජම්බෝල රේනු හැපිලා කස්ටඩ් එකේ තියෙන කිරි රසයට මුසු වුනාම කට ඇතුළෙම අමුතුම මිහිරක් මතුවෙනවා. ඇත්තටම ඒ අතුරුපස මම හිතුවට වඩා රසම රස අතුරුපසක්. ඒවා අත්තම්මත් හරිම ආසාවෙන් රසවිඳිනවා දැක්කා.

I am Indian and reside in Austria. Your King Coconut made me to remember my child days. In 1977 as 5 year old child i traveled to Sri Lanka and got jaundice. I was hospitalized in Ratnam Hospital. The doctor told to drink maximum King Coconut water to bring the liver in order. There was someone next to my room neighbor from Wattla(whose name I dont want to disclose) asked their family members to bring king coconuts from their own field and for 2 weeks got it which improved my health. I am Tax Consultant and earn well, and right from child hood I am traveling earlier as son of Engineer of Air India and now with my own funds. I have traveled many countries but never saw anywhere friendly people like Sri Lankans

You make a combination of coconut water, orange juice and watermelon juice with a touch of mint. Sure looks like a luscious thirst quencher.
