Russ didn't know Horus was corrupted and Horus was the warmaster, he told Russ that the emperor changed his orders to kill Magnus instead of arresting him, that's Just Horus and Chaos being smart.

They had also instilled into me the lie that the Emperor was trying to make himself a god, and they tapped into my insecurity that my Legions and I were to be thrown away at the earliest convenience, something that was amplified by me not being able to get a straight answer out of him.

It's hard to think that nobody is selfaware enough to see that things start to go a little insane if people sing and all around them go on a murder spree and stuff like that. Poor Sangunias was fighting demons all day he was exhausted by the time he caught up with Horus.
I wonder if by getting rid of the other two legions, the emperor caused an unbalance in the rest of the primarchs psyche towards chaos.
