POD express with an attached stereo switch is the ultimate backup. Pedalnetics has one that attaches. I assign fs1 to drive, fs2 tap/tuner, fs3 modulation, and fs4 to delay. This is the ultimate backup rig.

Opened for Willie Nelson at Billy Bob’s Texas in November of 2021. My Mesa Boogie Mark V red-plated and started smoking on stage and blew the speaker and all power tubes. 4000 people in attendance.
I had to play through the second channel of the steel guitar player’s amp the whole rest of the night. 😢

My Mesa Fillmore took a dump in front of 3000 a couple of years ago. That was the 3rd or 4th time over the years with tube amps. Been Helix ever since.

Had my share of gear failures in 25 years of gigs/ sessions/ stadium shows etc. Truth is your audience will not like waiting for you to bring your Katana from your car, in this business this is a no-go.
Nowadays I have a second (backup) direct channel on the desk just in case the main rig goes bananas, and a Boss LS to re-route my signal the minute I realise something's wrong. This channel is fed with a Tech 21 Tri-Od which is always powered from a different outlet than my main board. I can tolerate the Tri-Od in my iem's and I can finish the job adequately. Strings, cables and picks are always around, just in case...
No backup guitar since 2012, that's my Achilles heel 😁

I use a 529M with power banks for battery power. Since the 529 is expecting a USB C connected battery, it can also take a USB C connected wall wart. So I carry a couple of USB C cables and a 30 watt USB C wall wart. And they are very small, very light, and use standard detachable cables. If my battery dies, I can plug into the wall with this setup.

I bring a spare modeler and power supply in a Pelican-like case. Our biggest risk is our PA system. We don’t have a backup for that.

Boss ME-90 is the answer. Runs on 4 AA batteries 🔋so no reliance on expensive, big, and complicated power supplies and cords. Amps and effects all-in-one though lacking easily navigable presets, snapshots, etc. But good in stompbox mode.

Being a techie as well as a player, I'm well versed in Wall Wart repairs.
The cables LOVE to break just where there is insufficient spare length to do a cable repair.
Then it's Open The Box time.
Often they are glued together rather than screwed.
Spudgers CAN work to get them apart, but often I have found that a Razor Saw is required.
After that it's just a simple soldering and anchoring job.

As an old regular gigging musician, I've learned through suffering many equipment failures, including the PA! to build in redundancy. I run two combos side by side in stereo whenever possible. If one goes down, there another ready and always on - I just have to run in mono. My pedalboard has 6 pedals, the last in the chain being the Strymon Deco which splits the signal and provides the big ADT sound I need. If the pedalboard PSU goes down I have an old Boss ac-dc adapter I can use to power one pedal - probably my Fulltone OCD or I have a couple of 9v batteries I can use. Then I would just have overdrive running into my clean amps (built-in spring reverbs in each fortunately). And that has got me through before now. I always have 2 guitars in the room with me, along with a multitude of signal leads or varying types. We have spare Speakon leads for the PA, we even have a spare PA mixer amp in case that fails - it hasn't yet. But if the van breaks down - then we have a big problem! 🤣

I've always been paranoid about failures, so I've always had at least one backup guitar, spare audio & power cables, spare FBV boards when I used Line 6 heads, etc., etc. I've also always carried extra batteries, picks, straps and even drum keys for other band members, 'cause it's super easy to forget the small stuff when packing for a gig. Amazingly though, as many shows as I've done in 25 years, I've never had a major failure in terms of equipment, and even the string breakages can be counted on one hand. I've been pretty lucky!

At risk of sounding like one of “the Four Yorkshiremen”. Back in the day, if the amp stopped working, you plugged straight into the mixing desk, with an OD pedal, just to get the gig done. There were no modellers, and a reverb and delay rack unit cost way too much (why the Boss DD pedal was initially more popular with vocalists).

  • @NickGranville

For the gigs that you've shown clips on, FM9/FM3 all day long. Everything you need and nothing you don't. You make everything sound good, but certainly would never be left wanting with the Fractal. Throw a few XLR's and a few guitar cables in a small bag, and Bob's your uncle.

  • @alfgwahigain5544

The generally crappy quality of proprietary power supplies, and the usually-exhorbitant price charged for replacements is criminal.
I have a Valeton Dapper 3 button mini thing like the Jack White one John recently demoed, but mine only has modulation, delay and reverb, and it absolutely sounds good enough to use as a backup (or a primary, really).
I used to gig all the time with no backups other than strings and cables. Pedal connector cables, especially.
The only problems I ever had at gigs were tube failures a couple of times, and patch cables a couple of times, luckily.

  • @MaxCarton

I would always have a whole backup system ready that is completely detached from your main rig. If you play amps a whole different amp ready to plug in. If you’re a modeler guy an hx stomp or pod go. And yes always a backup guitar. In any case have it ready to go on the gig. I wouldn’t want to start troubleshooting in the middle of a song.

  • @lanceholland
    @lanceholland 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

Everything I use has a backup. I have a Stomp/Tonex One mini board as a backup to my FM9....and I keep a DSM Simplifier/9v supply in the bag just in case that fails. The band has extra cables, capos, tambourines, power supplies, etc. I also have a wired IEM with a cable in case my wireless Sennheiser G4 dies. BUT....all of that didn't help last night when the XLR going to our left main failed. The sound guy fixed that at a break but in his panic to fix the mix before he realized the cable went bad, left the IEM mix in a sorry state. I ended up finishing the last set with no monitoring...just hearing my guitar in the mains. As we are silent stage, there was not much more we could do.

The lowly boss gt1, full pedalboard and exp in one that runs on 3AA batteries for ever. Fits in any guitar bag, grab it and go with 99 presets and actual visual feedback and moving signal chain, directly compatible with the PGT - which is a really good 3rd backup and pocketable warm up unit. Both are extremely reasonably priced and both could actually cover 4-5 hours even if your whole rig is damaged. They’re small enough to keep in zip locked bags so even in a flood you’re ok.
Step smaller - katana Go & wireless unit with cable adapters in a kit bag.
Step bigger - any of the katana heads, or Kat Airs.
I reckon the call is most simply put, know your way around any super popular modelling system you can lay your hands on. The katana line is everywhere, even if you don’t carry a single bit of hardware, you can store backup presets in the cloud and load up a borrowed one with your own presets in minutes 😂 try doing that with the beloved stomp no?

A few years ago, I was experiencing power losses with my pedalboard at rehearsals. Not as bad as at a gig, but when you’re paying for rehearsal time, it’s still a big problem and embarrassing. I had a board with 8 pedals, daisy chained, powered first with a One-Spot wall wart, which I became suspicious of, then with a Godlyke Powerall wall wart. I was never sure if the problem was the power supply, the daisy chain, a particular pedal, or one or more of the patch cables. Finally I broke down and bought a Cioks DC-7, plus all new patch cables, and this seems to have solved the problem. Funny though that theoretically the Godlyke Powerall, rated at 2000 milli amps, should’ve had more than enough juice to power my board. I always bring a spare guitar to gigs.

Stomp XL on a small board (PT Nano or Mono Lite) and a slim, IEC-equipped power supply underneath. Then make two of those and keep them synced on backups. Both will easily fit into one pedalboard case. Carry extra instrument and FOH cables. Carry two guitars.

I don’t know whether you can get these things on your location or not, but M-Vave Tank-G has been my backup since it has built in rechargeable battery and with the recent firmware update it has tone capture capability so you can get nearly exact tone as your main rig. Interesting video, that arrives right around the time my HX Stomp is starting to fall apart. Love the thing, but apparently it doesn't take being shoved in the gigbag very well after a while. Which is unfortunate, as that's its biggest selling point for me.

Got a zoom 4040 brand new 25 years ago. Which I still use now, bought another one from eBay ten years ago as a backup. Two gigs ago couldn’t get any sound out of it. Where was the backup? Yes…at home. I play straight into PA. Tried another channel on mixer, it worked, so assumed it wasn’t the pedal, must be the mixer channel. No time to sort until first break. Then noticed I’d accidentally pushed the channel mute button. Doh! Since then always take my back up as obviously can’t have distortion on straight in mixer settings.
I also have in the lead suitcase a tool pack. Small soldering iron, screwdrivers, pliers etc, and a pack of different rated fuses.

I am not currently gigging, but I use a helix floor into the katana power amp section at home. In a gigging situation, I'd probably be able to get by just using the katana (although I'd need to buy the footswitch) with one caveat: I find that the inbuilt noise gate is pretty bad, making high gain tones hard to handle.

@@serpensnovus9869 Thanks, I thought so, but just making sure. I bought two True Tone/1Spot CS12 power supplies severals years ago - one of them did the same thing a couple of years ago. Now with several current demanding devices (Strymon BigSky MX, Eventide H90, Singular Sound Aeros looper, Beat Buddy and MIDI Maestro, etc.), I've been considering getting either the Strymon Zuma, Cioks or the new Walrus Canvas power supply. The Zuma has been getting rave reviews, for that matter, people seem to swear by the Truetone CS12 as well. I guess the challenge is determining whether to blame the manufacturer's design/quality control or a random surge from a gig venue's poor electrical system.
