For quite some time now I've been looking for a recording of Cilea's "Lamento di Federico' that could match Mario Lanza's peerless version of 1955 (made for the Warner Bros. film "Serenade"). Well, here it is, courtesy of Lithuanian tenor Virgilijus Noreika. This is a very rare record, and for its discovery I owe a debt of gratitude to my good TH-cam friend CraigFrancisSoto, who was gracious enough to provide me with a copy.
Noreika, a graduate of the Lithuanian State Conservatory (1958) and longtime member of the Lithuanian Opera Theater, sings with a voice that is warm, plaintive, and beautifully modulated; his manner is earnest and genuinely heartbreaking. The opening phrases of 'E la solita storia' are laden with pianissimos that are delicate without being wispy, but Noreika certainly does not stint on the climaxes (just listen to him fully unleash the voice on "vorrei poter tutto scordar" and "Mi fai tanto male! Ahime!"). Noreika studied in Milan in the mid 1960's, and it shows- his Italian diction is very good, better than most of his Soviet peers.
Those who have seen my Lanza video of the "Serenade" performance might conclude that I dislike crooning a la Tagliavini or Simoneau in this aria, and prefer the weight of a lirico-spinto or dramatic tenor. I still do favor Lanza by a very slight margin due to the latter's richer timbre (to this day I have never heard a tenor who could quite match his inimitable coloration and proliferation of overtones) and superior breath support, but the cumulative impact of Noreika's incandescent reading is shattering, right up there with him. And I prefer this to Lanza's other recordings from the Hollywood Bowl and Toronto. Noreika gives me goosebumps, and that is plenty for me! I will always treasure both versions and hope that other opera enthusiasts on TH-cam enjoy this memento of a wonderful tenor. The recording dates from 1968.
A lyric tenor with power. Never heard him live, but I am sure his voice could pierce through a large orchestra. Beautiful singing. Rest in peace.

I find his interpretation very heavy and most un-Italian. HE ALSO CANNOT RESIST THE CHEAP SHOWOFF HIGH B AT THE END.

I've listened many version of this aria .From Pavarotti to Lanza . This one is by far the best one.This guy has a golden voice.The end is just out of this universe.

This is not Björling. This is not Gigli. There is no such sound. This is extraordinary and impressive. I've never heard such a voice.

Björling plus Gigli is actually fairly accurate, to my mind. Certainly, Gigli came to mind to begin with. But the colouration of the vowels in the passaggio and upper voice has perhaps more of Schipa about it, although with twice the volume.

You are so right: Mario Lanza's version remains "numero uno" for me. However, Mr. Noreiks's is so surprisingly Italianate & heartfelt, that it will be on my list of favorite renditions of this great aria!

Desculpa, mas essa voz é de tenor lírico. A técnica, por ser perfeita, e a ponta, fazem com que pareça tenor dramático. Sem contar que essa ária é para tenor lírico com vozes mais heróicas... ficou esplêndida.
Não amigo, não é disto que eu falei.
Nos gêneros clássicos da musica e dança a coisa mais comum é o artista ficar mais preocupado com a técnica do que com a interpretação. Eu sei o que Cilea escreveu, a nota mais aguda escrita é G3, e é repleta de "P" e "PP", ela é adequada para qualquer voz, inclusive tenores ligeiros, visto que F.Tagliavini e Tito Schippa foram os primeiros grandes interpretes desta aria. Mas quando eu adjetivei de dramático, eu estava me referindo a interpretação carregada que este interprete colocou, para além da partitura, de uma maneira muito mais enfática do que a maioria dos interpretes mais conceituados o faz.

@@malata8 Солидарен с Вами, я тоже пою, но любитель и В.Нореку доводилось слушать в Питере в сольнике. Он отличался естественным поведением, манерой выступления, замечательным тембристым голосом с хорошей, плотной эмиссией, звонкими верхами, его любили, всегда ждали в Англии, он великий певец!

Dans ma déjà longue vie, j'ai entendu des centaines de ténors - jamais celui-ci, grandissime découverte, comment se fait-il qu'un artiste comme lui n'ait pas atteint le grande renommée internationale de tous les grands qui lui furent contemporains ? Je vous donne 10 Kaufmann contre un seul Noreika ! (Bon, il en fait juste un chouïa trop à la fin, la note aiguë n'est pas dans la partition).

To ring like a bell. It's an italian term describing the ability to produce a big space in the chest and head registers which causes the voice to resonate and as a result be very loud, full, thrilling, dramatic and so on.
+Piotr Szyba his voice is exquisite but it doesn't seem like an unusual squillo (that is to say, something other than lyric).
Squillo doesn't mean "somethin other than lyric". Squillo is a term related purely to technique, not type of voice. All types of voices may have a squillo.
Such an underrated vocalist. His squillo is really like molten gold , it has such pressence and its so enriching.

Nureika sang my favorite rendition for "Kuda Kuda". I dont think it's in youtube. In other things I like him less. But also this recording is very nice in my opinion.

Gigli version is unsurpassable
I think his version of this wondsrful aria is better than Lanza's, not to take anthing away from Lanza. But tbe very best performance is by Alfredo Krause. His high note is the most natural,the smoothest transition to the high note.
Lovely voice and legato, pronunciation could be better though.
