  • The Jedi Order in the Acolyte features Jedi that are unique because of their xeno racial backgrounds. We take a look at why its strange for these races to join the Jedi Order and what it probably says about the High Republic Jedi Order.

You don’t need to say “looked nothing like the cartoons” when talking about The Grand Inquisitor, because we already saw his species properly displayed in live action in Revenge of the Sith. And he looked nothing like his own species.

In my head canon, most force sensitive Wookies become tribal shaman, not Jedi. It's not worth the risk to grab force sensitive Wookies when they lose 3 Jedi to the forest on the way. Wookies are a lightside culture, Jedi don't need to keep them down.

The Empire being humanocentric was an early Legends concept that was basically written out by George Lucas in the prequel trilogy. Even at the end of Revenge of the Sith when Palpatine has pretty much everything he wants, he still has two non-human aids with him that are the same two we've seen for a long time. Palpatine doesn't think humans are better than everyone else, he just thinks he's better than everyone else.

A possible head canon idea for a zygarrien jedi.
Since the zygarriens hated the jedi so much, a force sensitive child would have been an embarrassment or disgrace to their family, and cause for contempt.

In some ways, there are sometimes members of a species who don't agree with it. We often see this in Star Trek with a character like the Ferengi, Nog, and several other species that aren't UFP signatories, but apply to Starfleet anyway as they see it as a good opportunity or agree with their principles even if their overall culture doesn't. I can see plenty of cases where there may be those of a species who don't agree with their government and have a force sensitive child that they happily give away to the Jedi to get that kid away from their culture. Plus, let's be honest, the Jedi had seldom cared who they abduct to become a youngling as long as they were force sensitive, as they will grab them at an age where they will not have formed their own cultural ties and will instead have the Jedi culture forced onto them. There are likely plenty of human bad fits in the Jedi order working in the agri-corps or some other mundane area simply to make sure they aren't running loose. The Jedi are in the brainwashing child soldiers business, so they would care very little where you came from as long as you are force sensitive and not from a dark side culture. Slavers may be immoral, but that doesn't make them dark siders.

I always figured Wookiees are at least as prone to force sensitivity as other species. But their connection is more intuitive/ less dogmatic than the Jedi, who would fail to notice any kid not conspicuously floating building blocks around their crib.

Right now I'm hopeful it reaches a level similar to the Fallout show. The Fallout show has some absolutely atrocious writing and CGI that would have looked bad in the 80s, which is even worse on a rewatch, but it's still great fun and that is the point of television.
The Acolyte at least has enough intrigue and thought going into it that it's actually better on a rewatch, so I remain determinedly hopeful for now.

826K subscribers I do remember the Zygerians, as they had a powerful and vast slave empire. The Zygerrians (Star Wars) are very much a lot like the Orion Syndicate (Star Trek), because they're infamously and notoriously well known for being greatly feared and notorious slavers and pirates. But it is always nice to see a fewgood, kind, and friendly individuals members of these two hostile species from their respective franchises fighting on the side of good. D'Vana Tendi one of the main characters from "Star Trek: Lower Decks" for example is a friendly female Orion who joins Starfleet and teaches us that not all Orions are bad.

You know, I've never realized why people hate that the sequel trilogy is essentially a re-telling of New Hope. I LIKED that, they brought back most of the characters we used to love, and we found out that the galaxy hasn't changed that much. The refurbished plot was a shout-out to New Hope (as was bringing back as many of the core characters as they could) is the way I saw it. I saw the new trilogy as kind of resetting the stage for a new cast of heroes - considering Ford wouldn't stay, and how old the original cast were. We lost two of them, or was it three, during the course of the sequels - the real actors passed.) Honestly the only thing I had against the series was that they set us up to have three main characters; and in the last movie the two guys were only barely in it. I mean, what might have been neat is if Rey got captured by elements of the New Order and the guys had to band together to rescue her, or some other important personage had been captured and the three of them had to work together to free the person. Maybe though that would have been a better plot for movie 2, but the guys should have played some prominent role in the last film. I tend to think that this is a big part of the reason everyone hates Rey as a "Mary Sue" - not because she was exceptionally talented (her grandpa was the Emperor for cripes sake, he was one of the most powerful Force Users ever. And he was deliberately trying to find a way to clone Force Users so he could get a proper clone of himself.) Part of the lore says that the reason Jedi are not supposed to have children is because the child of a force-user is almost always more powerful than their parent(s) - and it can be difficult to teach an abnormally powerful child any sort of morality when they can make you "kiss" every wall, floor, and ceiling in the house with bone-breaking force during a temper tantrum. Imagine the "Terrible Twos" with a child that can throw you through walls when they get upset. Or maybe Mind Trick you into giving them their way every time.
There's an old Twilight Zone episode I think was called "It's a good life" where this entire town is held hostage by a remorseless, selfish kid who can make his every wish come true. That's kind of what having a Force Sensitive child could be like period without the Jedi to teach them (and teach them that bad behavior has consequences with the power to enforce it). And it would be worse with an even stronger Force Sensitive child of a Jedi who can't compete with their own child.
If Rey was a Mary Sue then what does that make Luke? He gets a couple weeks of training with Obi during transit to Alderaan, and a couple months of training with Yoda on Degobah, and suddenly he can go nearly toe to toe with Vader. And in RotJ he could have taken Vader, he didn't want to, it wasn't his Destiny. Somebody had to push Anakin into fulfilling his Destiny - and doing that was Luke's Destiny. Palpatine WANTED Luke to kill Vader because he knew Luke was stronger than Vader.
I also don't quite get why people are angry about Luke's death. He died a heroes death, saving his sister one last time. He'd turned away from The Force after a terrible mistake, blinded himself to it, and managed still to Mind Trick Ren's entire army from halfway across the galaxy, to save his sister. That's pretty epic IMHO. At the same time he stopped Ren from killing his mother, and maybe forcing him to reconsider some of his actions.
Brief note; the Jedi almost never kidnapped children; just like we saw with Anakin, instead he and his mother were talked to and ASKED to let Anakin become a Jedi; that is how it was USUALLY done. The Jedi would tell the parents they have two choices; they can keep their child, but the child will be untrained and eventually probably forget their connection to The Force; or the child can join the Jedi Order, be trained to use their gifts, and possibly become galactic-level heroes. But the latter would come with sacrifices. I can imagine that many parents would have to take serious thought about this. They can keep their child by their side knowing that their child will probably end up just like them. Or they can give up their child for the child's own sake so they can make the most of their lives. Do they do the selfish thing and keep their child by their side, or do they do the selfless thing and give up their child to the Order knowing the Order will do their best with them?
Also "taking a child from their parents against their will is troubling and morally incorrect" - what if the parents are abusive and a danger to the child's life? That was MY childhood, my entire life would have been so much BETTER if I had been taken from them against their will. I might have actually had a decent life without them. Now I'm almost 63 and I'm alone. I've never been married, I have no children, and I barely know any of my blood family. I have to take daily medication to help me deal with the trauma of my childhood with my parents. I know I'm not alone in this either, I've met dozens of others who had similar, or even worse, families.
Good, you mentioned the Wookie Padawan from Clone Wars. Wookies are almost certainly one of those species derived from human colonists that evolved to survive on their planet. Almost certainly the ancient Rakata Force manipulated human genetics to make us more adaptable then we already were - it was why humans were their favorite species of slaves and a big part of why there are so many worlds with humans living on them.
Sorry for this long post, I always seem to get these ideas when listening to your show. I deleted a longer one for another pod-cast just yesterday.

If the child is healthy and thriving with the parents, then, yes, it's morally questionable to take the child from those parents, even if in someone else's opinion the child would thrive "better" under someone else's care.

0:05 ... Yeah, I think it's very telling that you have to open like that. I don't hate it. I just don't understand who they're trying to tell this story for. I thought they were supposed to have learned some kind of lesson about who their demographic is and who they need to be selling Star Wars to. If you want to kill a franchise, then tell your largest demographic that the franchise is no longer going to cater to you. It's not for you anymore. 😂

Andor had the aliens just right. There are two points to consider: One is that Emperor Palpatine is essentially a "human cultist" (as Saw Guerra put it) and is anti-alien. The anti-alien bigotry in the Empire was evident even in A New Hope. That would inevitably mean the closer one gets to Palpatine's presence the fewer aliens one would see, and the more humanoid those aliens would have to be. And that's exactly what we see in Andor.
Second, _most_ planets would have only few aliens and those would be in specific areas. We see that in reverse in many cases and don't even notice: How many humans and "other" aliens do we see walking around "alien" planets? There are going to be crossroads and trade planets that will have more aliens, and we'd see more aliens at spaceport cities or trade cities. But there would also be planets and cities on planets that would have few or no aliens...just like there are cities on our planet that have few or no non-citizens.

Weren’t there races who basically abandoned force-sensitive children - kicked them out of their society? Being cast out and and rescued by either a Jedi seeker or someone who brought her to a (relatively) local temple would explain a zygerrian padawan

I get it when GL wanted the OG species and race lore a little more boxy. the Wookie cannot be a Jedi as Mandalorians cannot be Jedi and others. he wanted Wookies primary roles as the strong primal race.
it's like marvel comics as The Hulk is strong, unstoppable force while Venom as symbiote nemesis to spiderman with wicked powers. Marvel have often combines these two elements as the Hulk Venom fusion is better than their counterparts.
now turn Wookie into a Jedi and you get a Hulk/Venom thing going on on star wars and looses the value of what Chewbacca brings since you create a hands down more powerful Chewbacca and if that becomes common, then the beloved Chewie just becomes a Wookie grunt. but race wise it's not all bad since Wookies are probably natural affinity to light side of the forces. they are primal in a savage world, live almost as long Yoda species and a natural knack for justice and honor.
But leave Mandalorians alone. they are too proud to be members of the Jedi cult in their own words.

The behind the scenes crew really should take note on how to make alien characters look real from the LOTR crew

I have read a fic that had a Zygerrian Jedi in it - the fic did that specifically because it was a "Tatooine Slave Culture" fic, in fact I think it is the tentpole fic of the fanon that is cited next to Fialleril's own work (FYI for people who don't know the fanon, Fialleril is the one who invented it). The plot point was that Shmi (who was characterised as being Force Sensitive in the fic)meets the Zygerrian and he has a very repentant for his species attitude.
I think the thing having a Zygerrian Jedi loses out on is bringing up that issue in their racial background. Maybe this show is not looking in that direction, so the slaver issue is never going to be brought up.

It's sad that Jecki had to die and Tasi had to live.
But since Jecki is part of the Party World race and Tasi was from the Slaver race--it would be nice to see her put with Vernestra in season 2. It could be nice to see a Zygerian with a light whip light saber. It would also be nice to see in live action what it's like for a Padawan when a Master dies.
It would have been crazy to have Tasi on that mission. I could see her murdering Qimir and then making a statement like... "you got my uniform dirty"

The first two Star Wars films are more human centred. Yoda being the only really alien character is fleshed out more as a consequence. It's only with Jedi and probably with developments in puppetry and later CGI that aliens become less of an exotic bit of flavour like the Cantina scene and appear everywhere. I think to the detriment of the story. The Hoth Battle feels like a real battle because real Norwegian soldiers are in real snowy trenches. The Gungans vs the Battledroids is a cartoon and doesn't feel like real characters facing a real threat. Not just because of the CGI but also because we are human. We aren't robots or rabbit frogs.
