Ok then, here ya go. 4x Kird Ape 4x Serendib Efreet 3x Erhnam Djinn 3x Juggernaut 4x Unstable Mutation 4x Berserk 4x Lightning Bolt 2x Nevinyrrals Disk 1x Chaos Orb 1x Wheel of Fortune 1x Timetwister 1x Time Walk 1x Ancestral Recall 1x Braingeyser 4x Tiaga 4x Volcanic Island 4x Tropical Island 3x City of Brass 3x Mishra's Factory 1x Library of Alexandria 1x Sol Ring 1x Black Lotus 1x Mox Emerald 1x Mox Ruby 1x Mox Sapphire 1x Mox Jet 1x Mox Pearl SB 3x Counterspell 2x Red Elemental Blast 2x Blue Elemental Blast 2x Nevinyrrals Disk 1x Mana Drain 1x Strip Mine 1x Mirror Universe 3x Energy Flux Regrowth is a possible trade for a main deck card. Strip mine could be a Trade for another mana source main deck, possibly the Mox Jet or Pearl. Good luck!
That's a really good question... I don't know. Because the mana base of this list is pretty tight and switching to 4x strips would make a big impact on the early game consistency. On the other hand... keeping the opponent 1-2 lands down for a bit longer keeps them in the early game longer... which this deck wins at. So... it's worth looking at. Best I can say... I would need to do some serious testing with 4 strips to see what can come out for those slots and how the deck works without the cards that came out.
This looks like a really fun deck to play! Man, it allways reminds me of my old magic days with my friends. We also started around 1996 but somehow we stoped playing in like 1999 or 2000. But it's allways great to see those oldschool stuff.
Hi Stefan, Absolutely YES this was a VERY fun deck to play. I had a really good time at GP Vegas playing this deck. I normally play control decks and matches have often gone to time. Control decks can be stressful sometimes but super aggressive decks like this are just not... drop creature swing for a lot finish with a Berserk or a Bolt. This deck can still benefit from a skilled player, definitely yes! But it's much easier to be a skilled player with this compared to something like The Deck or my Turbo Stasis 2.3 build. I almost went undefeated with this deck both days!
Hi Bob. Thanks for the comment. I had so many requests for 93/94 content that I expected this video to be more popular, but so far it's not getting a lot of views. But the people who want this content are really passionate about it. Sure, I'll keep making this content. I just hope others give OldSchool format a shot!
Yeah this kind of deck was definitely popular back in the day. I played a version somewhere around 1997 as well at Type 1.5 tournaments (so of course, no P9). I love this deck because it does very consistently well.
Why no counter spells? Force of Will or even Mana leak and if you need to bump up the blue count for force theres Psionic Blast blue burn. What about Mana Crypt?
Michael Knight This format is "1993-1994 Old School" and FoW and Mana Leak are not in the allowed sets. There is lots of counter magic in the sideboard, just not main board. Because the goal is to have game 1 be an overwhelming amount of aggression.
Michael Knight sorry I forgot to answer your question about Mana Crypt. I don't believe it's legal in Old School with the two main rule sets, Eternal Central www.eternalcentral.com/9394rules/ Or the Channel Fireball rule set. www.channelfireball.com/old-school-9394-magic-rules/
Cool deck Edwin. I played against Daniel Chang piloting this deck at a meetup at GP Portland. I was the first to beat it :). I was playing white weenie that ran 3 black vise and 3 winter orb that curved out to 1 preacher. Total cost of the deck is about $250. Old School being a rich mans format isn’t entirely true :)
You are EXACTLY correct that Budget decks CAN compete in Old School. I'm 95% sure that Daniel plays the deck wrong. He plays his Berserks and Unstables too early and aggressive tempo is not his forte yet. He's learning though.
I made the comment before I saw the whole video :D and the I saw your sideboard, indead the straight up counters are better. I play a UG beserk deck (flying men and scryb sprites) and I play both giant growth and unstable mutations, so I wanted a cheaper counter in my deck agains removal, that's how I ended up with avoid fate.
You can't even find the white bordered Chronicles ones? I have an extra set of those for sure... but some others must still... did you try Starcity games, TCG Player etc?
Because they kept moving around the start location of the Old School tournament and GP Vegas is a huge event area. I saw where they were going to meet up, went to the restroom and came back with like 3 min to spare before the start. But it had moved location and after 15 more min I finally found where it had started but at that point I was over 10 min late. I was actually pretty irritated that they moved the event location at the last minute and I felt it was not valid to disqualify me for being late but the rules are the rules. But Randy was still cool with playing me.
Concordant crossroads is pretty aggressive and it handles The Abyss. Diamond Valley could work with this deck. I'm not a fan of off color Moxen. Mid and late game off color moxen are dead cards in my experience I would much rather draw a spell or a land. I would like to see the deck in action a few times.
It should be noted this deck took 2nd place (almost won) The GP Vegas 2018 Old School Championship. It only lost to The Deck in game 3 when it just happened to not find an answer to Library of Alexandria until after The Deck drew like 12 cards off it. So a topdeck would have decided it. That tournament was a few hundred people playing and it had some of the top names in Old School there.
I sure wish I knew about Magic in 93/94. Even when I started in 1996 it was already really really hard to find anything from Alpha-Legends. If I remember right Berserk was always allowed, but it was always restricted. It was definitely a highly desired card. Yeah Fork was too.
Hi Captain Stash, I was curious myself, so I just went to Star City Games and checked out this entire deck. If purchased in the cheapest version allowed in Old School (original art, but white border and latest set) and nearly ALL the cards purchased in LP condition... the total came out to just under $22,000.00! Crazy I know! I was honestly surprised too. SCG didn't even have 12 of the cards in stock to actually complete this one deck! BEFORE YOU FREAK OUT! Go see my video about proxies!
Edwin the Magic Engineer that’s around what I though my friend sold me a deck couple years back for maybe 200 dollars which is now worth over 5000 with all the dual lands that used to under 20... Thank you for looking into it
garyExposMtl that’s a myth. Old School can be built pretty easily on a budget and be competitive (especially EC rules). The reason this is so expensive is solely the duals, and mirror universe. Collectors edition is legal in EC so CE Berserks are $30 and unlimited are $70. I stomped this deck with white weenie prison that costs about $225 total (w/ the board). To be fair it was Edwins deck but he wasn’t piloting it at the time.
And THAT is why proxies are ok in the long run. They will let new people into the format but given enough time... people just want the REAL original cards. Proxies initially drop local prices because people proxy up and stop buying for a bit... but then as the attendence at local proxy tournaments goes up 400% suddenly you notice players stepping into purchases of the small cards... A demonic tutor here, a fork there, etc. Eventually... one of the new guys shows up with their first mox. Their pure joy and excitement is infectious and next thing you know... others are doing it too. I've experienced this exact scenario more times than I can count over the years. It's why I'm such a supporter of proxies.
Well I was going nearly undefeated on both Saturday/Sunday at GP Vegas with this deck. Also, it's not classic... 4 Berserks was nearly never allowed, pretty sure not when all the other old school sets were made.
I played 4 ALPHA BERSERK in a deck with 4 Juzam etc A Serendib and my deck wasn't strong in competition even with 4 Berserek , cause Berserk is not a spoiler ... I think you win cause you good play and your opponents no!
Abovezecloud Ben thats not the same deck. Just because you had Serendib and Berserk as well did not mean you tried it. And you keep missing the fact that I did get top results two times at a major event with this deck. You keep saying it won't win... it DID win!
No , excuse me , i don't speak very well english ...what i want to say is : It's not Berserk that give you victory in tournaments but the equilibrium of your build-deck and your mind-game !
Ah ok I see what you meant. Thanks for clarifying. Yeah I fully agree that good deck equilibrium and thoughtful play were huge factors. But I must stress... I have had MANY games where my opponent tapped out thinking they were safe at 20 life, and then a Kird Ape or Mishra's Factory gets an unstable + 2 berserks and Swings for 20! I even caught Randy Beuhler off guard at GP Vegas! He was so shocked he took a picture and posted it on HIS Twitter account! His post on Twitter: twitter.com/rbuehler/status/876261430185545728/photo/1 Same thing happened to Daniel Chang of Vintage Magic in several games. Just ask him about it! So what I'm telling you is YES the Berserk DID shock people and crush them. It was absolutely the game winner.
I tested with that and although the extra strip was sorely needed it was easy to need a color and not have it without that 3rd city. Not a bad suggestion though.
I seem to be missing the interesting part in the "Oldschool" format. For me this is all way too unbalanced with too many way too powerful cards. I wonder why it is allowed to have a Mox Jet or Mox Pearl when not playing any white or black cards... makes even less sense in my opinion. I like your logic though!
@@EdwintheMagicEngineer you are right. Maybe i was being a bit subjective here. It's kind of a motivation to think of ways to counter those cards instead of lamenting that they a more or less unobtainable. Is there a good oldschool deckbuilder app/site you can recommend? Since i have to start fresh i need to make a plan on what cards i have to go hunting for ;) Keep up the energy, your videos are always a pleasure to watch.

I still have my Illusions of grandeur / donate deck sleeved from back in the "old days" just for fun. Keep up the good work!
I just discovered these old school videos. Good stuff, needs more views

Great deck. Put up lots of 93/94 deck techs.

I played a deck a lot like this back in the day, except without the control tools like nev's disk, I played Elvish archers and strip mines instead.
Yeah this kind of deck was definitely popular back in the day. I played a version somewhere around 1997 as well at Type 1.5 tournaments (so of course, no P9). I love this deck because it does very consistently well.
Really nice video, great walk through this awesome deck! :)
Thanks for that, I appreciate that.
I had a UG Djinn and Tonic deck with birds, elves, Giant growths as well as most cards in your deck. I like yours too.
Gravelbone that was what I started with but it eventually evolved to this
interesting format, it reminds me of Shandalar game, too bad there weren't all Legends cards and no Fallen empires.
Where can I buy this lamp?
I got that mana potion lamp at Think Geek :)
Sorry for the late reply. TH-cam didn't notify me about your comment.

Excellent analysis, thank you.

You can play Avoid Fate in the sideboard
If I didn't have blue in this deck for straight up counters... that would be a good thought :)

Unstable Mutation is SO underrated.
You are using my wife's favorite playmat. Two thumbs up.
Eveniswrong i have the same playmat. :-)
Hey Edwin, where can I find some good old ernham djinns nowadays and how much are they? Lol eBay currently literally has none atm
You can't even find the white bordered Chronicles ones? I have an extra set of those for sure... but some others must still... did you try Starcity games, TCG Player etc?
Nice vid, but how does one end up late for a game against RB?
Because they kept moving around the start location of the Old School tournament and GP Vegas is a huge event area. I saw where they were going to meet up, went to the restroom and came back with like 3 min to spare before the start. Why not Ball Lightning? Ball + Beserk = can of whoop ass
I started in 95. Beserk used to be just a wanted card back then.
I sure wish I knew about Magic in 93/94. Even when I started in 1996 it was already really really hard to find anything from Alpha-Legends.

how expensive is it?
