Coming up on Lad TV, is this German WWII tank haunted? Matt will try to restore it, while adding a nitrous system, while eating the UK's hottest chilli sauce on London's biggest kebab. But first.....
Love the V50, i’ve got one myself with the D5. Common problem with the sunroof on these would be the drain tubes going down the A and B pillars. there’s like 3 or 4 different connections on each corner when the tubing can become perished and expand over time which separates the connections, which leads to rain water leaking into the cabin
V50 with the legendary 2.4 D5 is a rare thing. Most V50s are either 2.0d or the eco 1.6d . 150K+ miles... that's only just run in for a D5. Looks like a SE LUX speck with decent colour combo. Get the windscreen checked though Matt. They are well known for de-bonding along the top edge and letting water inside. It'll explain the excessive condensation & mould found inside this V50. Volvo UK know all about this issue and if you speak to them nicely they will get it re bonded FOC, it that still has the original windscreen in place. Also being the D5 (185 PS) engine get the Aux belt & tensioner changed ASAP as they are known to snap prematurely. Volvo had a recall few years back on these and halved their service life down to 54K miles intervals. Currently there's a Volvo re call on both front seat belt anchor points... worth getting that done as well.

Thanks Matt great video. Some of these cars have problems with poor bonding of the windscreen at the factory. This is a source of water ingress. Also suspect sunroof drain holes and tubing in the A pillars. Water sloshing side to side in front of the driver is water that has leaked into a horizontal crossmember on the bulkhead beneath the screen. Volvo has a simple diy fix listed in their service manual (drill holes under the wheel arches basically). Sorry that’s long....

Looks like most of the cars we used to go and pick up- usually HP snatch backs!! I saw a Merc 280 Pillarless coupe (1972) in a similar state which came in to my friends car lot. Back in 1980. Now thats how to buy cars-get 40 years of motoring out of it and then have a car thats worth 15-20 X what you paid for it! Great vid, more please and the BATS!
The smell is the stagnant water in the floorboards. You need to leave it open on sunny day and wet vac the floors. The water is coming from the sunroof drains. You need to pull the a and c pillars and remove the old drain hoses and replace. They dry rot and clog and separate, so instead of water going into sunroof gutter then draining out the wheel wells, it only makes it part way and winds up under the carpets. I did mine in a day. There are four drain lines, one at each corner of sunroof. You don't have to remove the headliner, but it does make the job a bit easier. Don't let water via rain or car wash on the roof of the car until that is fixed or it will just keep getting worse. Vibration is cv axles, and engine mounts.
I think it's fantastic that you're doing this sort of video now. Just goes to show there's a car out there for everyone if you're prepared to look hard enough. Brilliant 👏🏽

Fascinating video. I really enjoy watching these cars brought back with a bit of care and attention. And, more importantly, many many congrats on100k subscribers. Thoroughly well deserved.
Hi. Nice find. :) Sunroof- check A pillars on both sides. Pipes are getting shorter and damps all water inside car. That explains moisture Vibration. Chech driveshafts. Can be carier bearing on the right side shaft or most likely inner tripod on driveshafts gone. You need to buy complete shaft to replace. Very nice car. Bullet proof D5, automatic, beige leather, Dynaudio audio system. Well done Sir.
From one V50 driver to another- well done. A hint: the water is likely coming from the sunroof area. These cars have drain lines in the front pillars that invariably shrink and separate. If the sunroof motor has problems (also likely), just put a small bead of silicone caulk around the top edge of the sunroof. A good cheap and removable fix. Otherwise, the water will keep coming and wreak havoc with all that leather. (Been there, done that with the mold!) Best of luck with your great wagon!
I've driven Volvos before, great cars ( TANKS ) to drive and very reliable. I'm surprised this one was left undriven for 12 months though. Keep us informed, I'll like to know how much it costs to refurbish it.
I'll never forget the episode of Top Gear where they drove 3 cars into a wall at 30mph. The first was (I think) an Audi, which sustained quite a bit of damage. The second was (again I think, a Rover), which was totally Donald Ducked. Clarkson was the last with the Volvo. He hit the wall at 30mph, took a few seconds to compose himself, then fired up the Volvo, backed away from the wall, and drove off.......
Had one of those, a D5 auto on an ‘08’ plate - it was 2-3 years old at the time, nice car but not in the same league as a V70 - as it was based on a Ford Focus - had an appetite for bulbs - xenons were about £140 a time! That vibration will most likely be a drive shaft at 150k + miles but I reckon it’s also just as likely to be flat spotted tyres after 13 months standing idle outdoors
Also worth checking the driveshaft carrier bearing, if it's awd. I had one let go on an XC90 and it made horrible thumping sounds and unbearable vibration.
Really nice find this, I had a T5 V50 for a bit and this has a lot of options on - has the optional Dynaudio sound system which sounds great. The sunroof is a weak point though - be sure to check the sunroof drains though they're probably blocked and you'll end up with leaks in the footwells as there's badly designed drains that go down the B pillars. And you just proved one of the reasons why the Volvo 5-port is such a legendary engine. For the vibration hard to say without driving it but check the front suspension links and ball joins as they're really weak on these cars. Luckily they're cheap to fix, it's basically a ford focus underneath (simultaneously a blessing and a curse). Check the driveshafts too they are also a common weak point - the 5 pots love to snap them especially when remapped. To anyone interested in a V50 - they are good cars but the space inside is mediocre at best, thats why I got rid of mine, boot just wasn't big enough. Best to think of this as a family hatch e.g. golf than a real proper estate car.
@@Eagle030595 No it doesn't, but do you really think a car dealer needs to be told to check the seals of a leaking car? Isn't that the first thing he'll be doing? Maybe suggest that the Pope becomes Catholic or advise bears to shit in the woods next time eh?
I agree with MM here, leaks around sunroof may cause water to flow down under the rear seats, hence the sloshing sound Matt mentioned. Saw another Volvo where the screen leaked down the A post and ruined the computers behind the accelerator pedal, and caused rust issue.
Nic one Matt, my last company car, before I moved onto a new career back in 2008, was a D5, she was a beaut, put up 160, 000 miles in her, bullet proof, super comfy, winter pack, well able to shovel when needed, cheers pal....good luck with the sale 👌
That was a great video Matt. I have been a Volvo owner now for 30 years and didn't doubt for one minute it wouldn't start. I love your knowledge of cars and it's nice to hear your passion in every video. Better than 'Top Gear' Matt. Keep them coming.
Hello there!! This is Ahmed from Morocco. I'm a fervent admirer and follower of all your amazing videos. Thanks a million for all the car reviews!! I also must say that I have a penchant for Volvo estate cars....they are simply sublime. Thanks for saving that poor V50 from its miserable state. Keep up the good work 😁
I'd put my money on the vibration being an engine mount. They normally need swapping out on the larger V70s and Xc90s at that mileage - the D5 is a sizable unit for a V50. 👍
Vibration under load is very likely driveshafts, just had to have this done on my 2009 V50. You could watch the headlight beams bouncing on the road surface as you accelerated, since then it's been good - after ~230k miles, it probably deserved them!
I love red Volvos. They look so good. A weekend for detailing the cabin will help. Just let a bowl with vinegar stay in the car for a night or two. Or put a cloth with 4711 on the heater matrix. All mechanical faults sorted out, and you'll have a trusty car for many years to come. Love your videos.
Topic, yep good idea. Music? I'd remove it myself, your videos are good enough without it. Those trade plates must come in handy. As to what to do with the car? Perhaps use it is the start of a barn find trade up series, see how quick you can get to the Aston.
Great looking cars the old V50 and V70. Who would have thought that such a good looking car had cost so little. Unless there is a big bill looming for service and repair! Enjoyed the video. Thank you.
Yup. Mine's 2006 (V40), 'only' 123k miles. But everything still works fine. No funny messages, no non-working electronics. Just had MOT and fuel filter changed. Another 12 months - here we come!
@@notroll1279 Sure there are some ford parts but it's refined by volvo. No electronics issues like a ford of similar vintage for example. Much safer. More comfortable. Better engine. Better materials. A focus in a frock? No. Maybe a very distant cousin of a focus would be more apt.
We bought a 2006 version of this car in 2016 on 60k, it was a 1.6 petrol Expression model so fairly basic. Gradually it developed all your usual foibles - windows that didn’t work or if they did they went up and down on their own in the rain, heater blower only worked on 4 etc. Mechanically though it was great, in the following 6 years and 80k it never missed a beat and required only routine servicing.
I’ve been looking at v50’s or v70’s. Maybe after a series of videos I could come and have a look with my clipboard. Btw I’ll be double checking the colour of that brake fluid
For slightly older Volvos Joe, it's a good idea to go to a Used Volvo specialist. There are a few about. I don't know where you are, but there is guy not too far away from me who has sold used Volvos for 25 odd years - Paul Nutbrown. A search will find his site....
Having owned both, I’d always pick the V70 over the V50. The V50 is a big step up from the Focus/Mazda3 that it shared the chassis/Engines from - they don’t rust away like it’s siblings and the metalwork/body structure especially up front is much more substantial and much better steel. But the V70 of the same era was the last true Volvo before Ford stepped in. If space is a concern then the V70 is so much roomier - I struggled a lot with interior space (being 6’4”) which meant the drivers seat was very close to the rear and travelling with 3 other adults was nit comfortable
@@Brian-om2hh Agreed. Fella near me does the same - look for Seb @ SLR Motors, older single owner models that have been thoroughly maintained and are presented to a very high standard. I picked up a 2006 XC90 couple of years ago and it was immaculate.
Always was a sucker for the V50 design but the missus convinced me into getting the V60 (2012), so here i am now, driving a V60(not that there's anything wrong with it) and ogling at V50s in traffic.. simply gorgeous cars. As for what to do with it.. pretty much every clip you put out, i watch, so you can't go wrong in my eyes, but you could restore it to working condition, try to sell it(for some kind of profit) and give the story behind that and maybe keep in touch with the people you sell it to in order to get some feedback in a couple of months/maybe a year after the purchase and see how the car is doing.
Back in 2015 I did exactly the same thing. I bought a 2002 VW Golf from a client of mine. The car been sitting on their driveway for 2 years and that beautiful, almost perfect silver paint had turned grass green, interior was just like your Volvo....it was all mouldy and there was a rotting smell. I paid £400 for it, jump started it and took it to my local garage just like you did. Service, new MOT and a new set of Tyres later it was absolutely great. I also had it washed and cleaned nicely, but the smell just stayed with it..not for me..I got used to it, but for everyone else that got in the car, they could smell it. But hey, it was a difficult time in my life back then and that car did great 👍
I know! To be honest I'd never use one of them anyway they destroy paintwork but especially when covered in that much crap it needs to be lifted off or it's just going to be scoured into the paintwork. Dude should maybe have worn a mask too because that mould can be dangerous
I wouldn't have touched it until a proper valet service. I don't know how was described in the sale ad, but running with flat tire (without knowing anything else), bad engine noise, maybe the auto was broken, or anything else lol it was a real jump in the dark night. Lucky you got most of it working and taking you to petrol station! But, just for the tip, before doing an automatic wash, it was way better to have a manual wash and removing all leaves and stuff. Keep us updated!

Great new format 👍 Looking forward to following along with the progress videos on this one!
The vibration could be a engine mounting
Probably. 12 months of sitting in a humid environment = rotting rubbers. Good chance all of the hoses and pipe work are on their way out.
Thanks good info just brought a rare manual v50 t5
Production values have gone up significantly Matt! 😮👍🏻👏🏻
Best video yet. What a difference a wash and valet makes. Keep us updated
Fannnnncy new intro!! Music and all!
Interesting video too, I like this kind of stuff.
Thanks!
Glad you like it!
@@HighPeakAutos Wow Matt you look younger, the music is exciting and so many facial closeups suggest you are auctioning for the next Bond movie.
@Ross Bourne From Romiley With Love 😂
Brill mate ,made my day and it was going great already.
What a transformation! I’m looking forward to the outcome of the service/ vibration under acceleration.
That might be mass fly wheel
Check all the door seals and sunroof, all that mold came from it anyway. Such a nice car when you washed it up a bit. :)
He's a car dealer, I think that might have occurred to him don't you? Besides he already said the sunroof was dripping.
@@sandersson2813 Doesn't hurt anyone to comment on it, does it?
@@Eagle030595 No it doesn't, but do you really think a car dealer needs to be told to check the seals of a leaking car? Isn't that the first thing he'll be doing?
Maybe suggest that the Pope becomes Catholic or advise bears to shit in the woods next time eh?
@@sandersson2813 🤣
I agree with MM here, leaks around sunroof may cause water to flow down under the rear seats, hence the sloshing sound Matt mentioned. Saw another Volvo where the screen leaked down the A post and ruined the computers behind the accelerator pedal, and caused rust issue.
Legendary engine indeed. I had that same one in a 2008 C70. They even sound good for a diesel & have a fair amount of go.
Really enjoy these kinds of videos. The only thing I would mention is the music. Kinda makes it feel a little cheesy. Other than that tho, good stuff.
Fair enough
A little bit loud, also the wobbly camera bit, not sure I'm up for that either
Brilliant format, music doesn't do it for me either, well not all the way through anyway. Looking forward to the next installment!
Nic one Matt, my last company car, before I moved onto a new career back in 2008, was a D5, she was a beaut, put up 160, 000 miles in her, bullet proof, super comfy, winter pack, well able to shovel when needed, cheers pal....good luck with the sale 👌
Excellent content with none of the inflated ego you find on other channels.
I appreciate that!
@@HighPeakAutos Sorely tempted to start looking at SL55's after your reviews.
Agree entirely
That was a great video Matt. I have been a Volvo owner now for 30 years and didn't doubt for one minute it wouldn't start. I love your knowledge of cars and it's nice to hear your passion in every video. Better than 'Top Gear' Matt. Keep them coming.
Thanks!
3:44 someone else who incorporates film and TV quotes into their daily life! I'm not the only weird one, cheers Matt 😂
Haha I cannot get through the day without it
I have a friend with whom I communicate with almost entirely through Wayne's World quotes.
What’s the quote from?
@@NH00531 Home Alone 2 that buddy!
@@jonathonwilliams93 many thanks. Only seen the first one. 👍
Keep up the good work 😁
Hello! Thanks for watching
I'd put my money on the vibration being an engine mount. They normally need swapping out on the larger V70s and Xc90s at that mileage - the D5 is a sizable unit for a V50. 👍
Agree with other comments, can’t wait to see more of this kind of thing. Just love it! keep it up!
Vibration under load is very likely driveshafts, just had to have this done on my 2009 V50. You could watch the headlight beams bouncing on the road surface as you accelerated, since then it's been good - after ~230k miles, it probably deserved them!
It's the oc axle on my v50 t5. Vibration when accelerating
More of this style of vlog please Matt, looking forward to part two.
Love the new intro
I love red Volvos. They look so good. A weekend for detailing the cabin will help. Just let a bowl with vinegar stay in the car for a night or two. Or put a cloth with 4711 on the heater matrix. All mechanical faults sorted out, and you'll have a trusty car for many years to come. Love your videos.
Topic, yep good idea. Music? I'd remove it myself, your videos are good enough without it. Those trade plates must come in handy. As to what to do with the car? Perhaps use it is the start of a barn find trade up series, see how quick you can get to the Aston.
Good idea. I've been thinking of doing a 'working my way up to a...' series. I havent decided on the format yet
Great idea!!!! Trade up to an Aston!!! Would love to see that!!! 💯 💯 💯 💯 💯
@@HighPeakAutos please please please do this idea!!!! Trade up to an Aston!!!!!!!!!! 💯
Great looking cars the old V50 and V70. Who would have thought that such a good looking car had cost so little. Unless there is a big bill looming for service and repair! Enjoyed the video. Thank you.
That wooden console/door trim is quite sought-after!
2.4D with manual would be extra special. It's a diesel that actually sounds quite good, a bit like low revving Audi Ur-Quattro or TTRS.
Cleaned and fixed up worth 1 ½ to 2 grand of anyones money, it will do another 150K miles, 2007 is not old for a Volvo.
Yup. Mine's 2006 (V40), 'only' 123k miles. But everything still works fine. No funny messages, no non-working electronics. Just had MOT and fuel filter changed. Another 12 months - here we come!
Well, is this a Volvo or is it just an old Focus in a frock? The engine is a Volvo D5, I understand, but what about all the rest?
@@notroll1279
Sure there are some ford parts but it's refined by volvo. No electronics issues like a ford of similar vintage for example. Much safer. More comfortable. Better engine. Better materials. A focus in a frock? No. Maybe a very distant cousin of a focus would be more apt.
@@geraldhornsby a 2006 v40? I don't think they exist? Do you mean s40?
@@Cloud007. D'oh! Yes, of course I do. That'll teach me to post replies after a glass of wine or three.
Thats a sweet find! I love your honesty, and your voice is soothing.
13 month old fuel, and it still started, legendary Volvo.
Those bats when you lowered the visor proper made me jump 😂😂
Check under the carpets of the front seats for water. Usually the sunroof drains fail and you get loads of water under there.
One of those videos you like when you're only 40 seconds in. I like Volvo's, but I've never owned one.
Thanks!
A good volvo is a driven volvo. The older, the better. Just like Port wine.
Ambassador Matthew with this new video format you are really spoiling us, love it!
thats a volvo mate, it will never let you down
Always loved the look of the v50 still look good even today
Interesting transformation a bit short though, I’d rather see more of the valet
6:12,
Scared the knackers out of me 😂😂
Great vid as always. Prefer the previous lower key style tho! 👍
Fair enough!
Yeah but nice change, suited the barn find.
But hey, it was a difficult time in my life back then and that car did great 👍
Oh god why didn't you do a brushless wash?!
I know! To be honest I'd never use one of them anyway they destroy paintwork but especially when covered in that much crap it needs to be lifted off or it's just going to be scoured into the paintwork. Dude should maybe have worn a mask too because that mould can be dangerous
I have one of these.. At 260 000 km, been very reliable.. Still tight and and comfy to drive.
Can we get an update on this one? Can’t stop thinking about what happened to it. Yeah, sad little man I am.
Haha sorry, I sold it to my mechanic
@@HighPeakAutos for how much?
Car rescue missions are always interesting to watch. I wish this video were longer. For example the detailing would have been satisfying to see.
give it away to a viewer :) i could do with a motor once its sorted hahaha
PanZ3r69 ....brilliant idea
I bought and a sold quite a lot of those V50's when i dealt in older cars. really nice cars to drive!
That's too good a car to have been left sitting for years, some people are so spoilt! 😮
