he just had a sick release, i can't think of another QB who threw the ball with such velocity and ease. Even compared to other greats, he was just a tick above in that sense. Also, what a great match for an Al Davis system with James Jett/Tim Brown, or with the Vikings and Randy Moss.

Jeff George had all the natural ability athletes pray for, just imagine if he could have combined that with a strong work ethic or similar to Kobe Bryant’s Mentality and approach to playing sports.
I would like to add Jeff George def. worked hard because he made it all the way to NFL and lasted well above the average career in the NFL. The difference From simply working hard and going above and beyond what is expected and reaching the next level. He got that far of his natural ability and doing the minimum.

I met Jeff G in Washington, he told me it’s all about putting a tight spiral on thr ball. He also said he could thow faster but couldn’t be as accurate or as easy to catch

Whether he won or not, he was fun to watch simply because of the throws he made. Nobody in league history could put that kind of velocity on the ball with so little effort. When ESPN or the NFL Network did their 'Top 100 throws of all time', they didn't have one of George's passes. They easily could have had 20 and it still wouldn't have been enough. Amazing passer....great fun to watch.
To begin, you are correct, he was fun to watch because of the throws he made. But really, not one of George's throws made that top 100 list. WOW. I was very young during jeff George's career.. but I have herd many older nfl guys say that Jeff george was the most accurate q.b they have ever seen..

I played against Jeff George in high school in Indianapolis he played at Warren Central after the game he spit in my face I was a kicker that just beat them by two points
Underrated is an interesting work but perhaps that's correct because George is more known for the negative items but he was so good at throwing the ball. George's ability to play QB is not really mentioned a lot as it's all about his negative items. Thanks for the comment.
Loved to watch George play. Always felt like he preferred the excitement of putting on a show, completing beautiful deep & intermediate passes, to winning. He wanted to throw for 400 yards like everyone was assembled there for his stats competition rather than winning the game. But it was so much fun to watch. No NFL fan ever turned the channel to another game when Jeff George was playing. If every QB was like that instead of being cautious the games would be much more fun to watch today. Today’s dink & dunk, checkdown football is boring compared to how Jeff George played. He had an arm like Aaron Rodgers.
He was one of my favorite players growing up and didn't find out about the attitude/intangibles until later. Man, if he had 1/4th of Brady's mentality, there's no doubt that he would've won a Superbowl, maybe a couple.

Great call back. Jeff had a top 3 arm ever displayed probably, and probably the best I'd ever seen. It's ridiculous how the ball just shot out of his arm like that with seemingly little effort. I agree with the throw he made to Metcalf in the 1995 playoffs as his most memorable throw. That type of talent is basically a myth. Too bad George just had a bad attitude as a pro.

Great video! The primary reason that I remember the 1995 Atlanta Falcons is because that victory of theirs over San Francisco helped to keep my bears out of the playoffs that year.
I remember that. That Falcons game shocked the Bears fans and all of the Bears postgame shows as Chicago needed ATL to lose for CHI to get into the postseason. Then the Bears would begin to decline during the Wannstedt era, I think mainly due to the poor drafting and player personnel decisions. Thanks for the comment. What would JG's numbers be if he had Andre Rison, and Hinton. The O-line was trash, and he didnt have an elite receiver to throw to until he played for the Raiders, ATL, and the Vikings.
Great production. George has been one of my favorites ever since he revived Minnesota and was balling out to Moss. I thought he had the greatest long-distance cannon in the league, even more zip than Elway.

And Farve was upset George didn't get another chance, saying he was one of the most talented QBs ever and had at least four more good years to offer as a solid backup.
@@vesubioromo9425 I think the Vikes should have drafted The Freak (Jevon Kearse) in 1999 in Round 1 instead of Culpepper. Then, George could have been their QB for the next 4-7 years or so.
Supremely under appreciated. Minnesota truly could have won a Super Bowl if they had just sat Culpepper for one more season, but Denny Green and his racist attitude of wanting to be the first black head coach to win the SB and he wanted to do it with a black qb, he said as much in his book that off season. Another George story is that he was out of the league for a year or two, but when Moss was traded to the Raiders, he convinced them to bring him in for a tryout because he loved playing with George. He had a rocket arm and the leadership skills, unfortunately he seemed immature or unmotivated at times. June Jones said if the Falcons had drafted him, he would be in the Hall of Fame. Randy Moss said he was the best qb he ever worked with. That says a lot.

George didn't most the time didn't step into his throws ,so in one way he released the ball a fraction quicker then one who does , & as a Viking I enjoyed watching him play & he never threw rainbows, 50yrds max but threw bullets 45yrds away
The Colts quarterback I remember who was unbeatable when healthy was Bert Jones. But injuries cut short what I always thought was one of the best slingers who ever played the game. When he was on the field nothing could stop the Colts. But injuries brought his career to a swift end.

The first time I heard about Bert Jones was in a free video my family got after buying 4 quarts of oil or something, but it was when I was really young, and in that video Boomer Esiason said Jones was his favorite QB.
I know this is about George but Terance Mathis is one of my favorite career arcs. Basically a 300 yard receiver with the Jets over his first four years and then exploded with George and the Falcons in '94. They really should've been a better team with those weapons.

George would have won many Grey Cup's in Canada (if he would have played up there in the North). Rice's throw looked to be around a 49 yard (49ers haha) strike to WR Street I believe... heck of a throw and under pressure. Glad you took time to reply, and you made a wonderful video on Jeff George, I really enjoyed watching it.
Your comparison to Marino is not wrong at all. Ive watched some games of his rookie season and that's who people were comparing him to! I think George just didn't fit well with Indy's scheme and that's why he struggled there. He flourished far better in Atlanta, Oakland and Minnesota and he became a great West Coast Offense QB. But his inconsistency, attitude problems and lack of success are what everyone remembers about him sadly. Correction: He adapted to the West Coast Offense in Minnesota but you were right, he hated it when he was in Oakland. Funny enough, Randle Cunningham also struggled with the West Coast when Gruden became OC of Philly......however, when he went to Minnesota, they ran a West Coast Offense that saw Cunningham have his best season.

Jeff George was the highest rated QB at the NFL combine ever. I was a big Dan Marino fan and your comparison in throwing the ball was accurate. George's arm & release was up there with Marino & Namath. His attitude & mindset was up there with Ryan Leaf.

Based on pure arm talent, I'll say that nobody was better than Jeff George. His arm was just freakish, and he could sling it with ease. However, there is indeed always a "but" with Jeff George. George wasn't someone who was gonna put in the extra work that was needed to no only be successful, but sustain that success. He did things his way, and his way was just letting his arm do the work. His arm was good enough to get him by for a little while, but it was not sustainable. Plus he wasn't someone who was gonna get his teammates to rally around him. During his time in Washington, he said that leadership was overrated. Nobody in Washington wanted him except the owner. And everyone knows about Dan Snyder and his hands-on style. If he really wanted something, 9.9/10 times he was gonna get it.

Marty while he was working for ESPN said that he couldn't work for someone like Snyder, but Snyder convinced him to take the HC job. At the time, Snyder really knew how to sell a product. Everyone knew that George was not a good fit for Marty Schottenheimer's offense, but Marty when he took the job had no choice but to go with him to start the season. And as you pointed out, it didn't last long. George was cut by Marty after the first two games of 2001. Washington was outscored 67-3 in those two games. People forget that Marty wasn't able to do much in free agency because the team was so hurt by the cap thanks to all the big moves that were made the year prior. Marty walked into a mess.
Jeff George was hit more than any other QB in history in his first three seasons. A number that still stands to this day. The guy was great. Just horrible teams.

All you "Noodle Arm" haters of Tua need to watch this clip. Jeff George is proof you don't need a cannon arm to win a championship or a passing title. The QB position requires Accuracy, Awareness, Ball placement, Anticipatory skills, pocket presence, footwork. Absolutely doesn't require you to have a cannon for an arm. Noodle arm was the #1 rated QB in the league when healthy. Is it nice to have? Sure it is, it receives attention just like it is right now. Jeff George, Brett Favre, Dan Marino had some of the best arms I have ever seen. But it doesn't solely make you a champion.

I am a Vikings fan since the 80's and we'll remember the late 90's teams. Jeff George had the greatest arm I've ever seen. My buddy and I to this day still talk about the greatness of "King George" and joke about him returning to bring the Vikings that elusive first Superbowl!

George didn't get traded in 1996 because he wanted to be a FA the next year. He was going to get traded to Seattle for Rick Mirer, but he refused. In hindsight, he would have been better off going to Seattle than going to Oakland in FA.

I know june jones was a bad head coach, but he's a great qb coach. His run and shoot offense proved to be effective. He helped develop Hall of famer warren Moon and helped develop another pro bowl qb in chris Miller. In 1995, the Falcons had 3 receievers go over 1,000 yards, including a special teams returner

George had one of the strongest arms I'd say top 5 we're Marino,Elway,George,Favre,Cutler.. 3 of those guys were great, 2 we're good but I think they underachieved I think bad attitude is what separated Cutler and George from the others.. If I'm missing a guy with great arm strength I'd like to hear it, I feel like I'm missing a guy or 2...Vick actually threw darts too, probably stronger arm than Cutler and maybe the others, he's such a great runner I think his arm strength got overlooked..but yeah I'd like to hear some other that threw lasers on the field if I'm missing some

I honestly think Jeff George would have been an all-time great if he had more support, never in his entire career did he have support from a talented coaching staff. The only times he had good coaches they wanted to get rid of him from day 1. He was immature, but a lot of great qbs started out that way.

@@90sSportsNostalgia Turtle Marino is the most overrated QB, those numbers were made because he threw 40 times or more per game, they always justify the turtle for not having a ground attack, but if they didn't it was because of the turtle, poor Jimmy Johnson without the turtle would have done a great job in Miami, but the turtle deprived him of being able to work properly, in the turtle's last season the substitute QB had a 5-0 mark, it was the turtle arriving vs Jacksonville and embarrassing all people of Florida , and yes the turtle had some movements that made nervous even someone highly drugged. One of my all time faves . Gem to watch his highlights still. But George was a way better athlete than Marino for comparison. Marinos footwork was more disciplined because he had to be but George was way better athlete and he did have great footwork just improvised a lot behind bad lines

I understand the argument but Jeff George wasn't a good passer. Dude had no touch. His whole M.O. was to throw the ball as hard as possible and sometimes change the trajectory. When you watch Marino, he could make all types of throws at different velocities. Every George throw in this video is basically him throwing as hard as possible to a WR running a streak route 20+ yards downfield. Maybe that's an exaggeration, but not by much. Jeff George was awesome to watch but mostly due to his flawed talent. He was capable of anything both good and bad.

I do slightly disagree with George throwing the ball as hard as possible on every pass as I thought he could put touch on the ball, as changing the trajectory on the pass is part of putting touch on the ball (perhaps I should have used better highlights). I thought Kurt Warner was the best at putting touch on his passes when he needed to and George was nowhere as good as Warner at doing that. But with that said, I thought George could somewhat throw with touch, but maybe I'm wrong and you're right as I got deceived as the ball just comes out of George's hand with such ease but explodes to the receivers. Whether he won or not, he was fun to watch simply because of the throws he made. Nobody in league history could put that kind of velocity on the ball with so little effort. When ESPN or the NFL Network did their 'Top 100 throws of all time', they didn't have one of George's passes. They easily could have had 20 and it still wouldn't have been enough. Amazing passer....great fun to watch.
To begin, you are correct, he was fun to watch because of the throws he made. But really, not one of George's throws made that top 100 list. WOW. Underrated is an interesting work but perhaps that's correct because George is more known for the negative items but he was so good at throwing the ball. George's ability to play QB is not really mentioned a lot as it's all about his negative items. Thanks for the comment.

Loved to watch George play. Always felt like he preferred the excitement of putting on a show, completing beautiful deep & intermediate passes, to winning. He wanted to throw for 400 yards like everyone was assembled there for his stats competition rather than winning the game. But it was so much fun to watch. No NFL fan ever turned the channel to another game when Jeff George was playing. If every QB was like that instead of being cautious the games would be much more fun to watch today. Today’s dink & dunk, checkdown football is boring compared to how Jeff George played. He had an arm like Aaron Rodgers.

Great call back. Jeff had a top 3 arm ever displayed probably, and probably the best I'd ever seen. It's ridiculous how the ball just shot out of his arm like that with seemingly little effort. I agree with the throw he made to Metcalf in the 1995 playoffs as his most memorable throw. That type of talent is basically a myth. Too bad George just had a bad attitude as a pro.

I remember that. That Falcons game shocked the Bears fans and all of the Bears postgame shows as Chicago needed ATL to lose for CHI to get into the postseason. Great production. George has been one of my favorites ever since he revived Minnesota and was balling out to Moss. I thought he had the greatest long-distance cannon in the league, even more zip than Elway.

And Farve was upset George didn't get another chance, saying he was one of the most talented QBs ever and had at least four more good years to offer as a solid backup.

Supremely under appreciated. Minnesota truly could have won a Super Bowl if they had just sat Culpepper for one more season, but Denny Green and his racist attitude of wanting to be the first black head coach to win the SB and he wanted to do it with a black qb, he said as much in his book that off season. Another George story is that he was out of the league for a year or two, but when Moss was traded to the Raiders, he convinced them to bring him in for a tryout because he loved playing with George. He had a rocket arm and the leadership skills, unfortunately he seemed immature or unmotivated at times. June Jones said if the Falcons had drafted him, he would be in the Hall of Fame. Randy Moss said he was the best qb he ever worked with. That says a lot.

The Colts quarterback I remember who was unbeatable when healthy was Bert Jones. But injuries cut short what I always thought was one of the best slingers who ever played the game. When he was on the field nothing could stop the Colts. But injuries brought his career to a swift end.

I know this is about George but Terance Mathis is one of my favorite career arcs. Basically a 300 yard receiver with the Jets over his first four years and then exploded with George and the Falcons in '94. They really should've been a better team with those weapons.

Comment: Jeff George was the greatest Quarterback passer ever! He was up there tied with Brett Favre! It's sad that he never won a Superbowl, but this guy had an arm. George would have won many Grey Cup's in Canada (if he would have played up there in the North). Many people right now who are young in 2024, and those who 34 years of age right now in 2024 will dismiss this guy as being some type of simp but he was better than Brady, Aikman, Marino, Flutie, Moon, Brees along with the new crop of talent that the league has right now (referring to the NFL/USFL) as you are reading this. Your comparison to Marino is not wrong at all. Ive watched some games of his rookie season and that's who people were comparing him to!
I think George just didn't fit well with Indy's scheme and that's why he struggled there. He flourished far better in Atlanta, Oakland and Minnesota and he became a great West Coast Offense QB. But his inconsistency, attitude problems and lack of success are what everyone remembers about him sadly.
Correction: He adapted to the West Coast Offense in Minnesota but you were right, he hated it when he was in Oakland. Funny enough, Randle Cunningham also struggled with the West Coast when Gruden became OC of Philly......however, when he went to Minnesota, they ran a West Coast Offense that saw Cunningham have his best season.

Jeff George was the highest rated QB at the NFL combine ever. I was a big Dan Marino fan and your comparison in throwing the ball was accurate. George's arm & release was up there with Marino & Namath. His attitude & mindset was up there with Ryan Leaf.

Based on pure arm talent, I'll say that nobody was better than Jeff George. His arm was just freakish, and he could sling it with ease. However, there is indeed always a "but" with Jeff George.
George wasn't someone who was gonna put in the extra work that was needed to no only be successful, but sustain that success. He did things his way, and his way was just letting his arm do the work. His arm was good enough to get him by for a little while, but it was not sustainable. Plus he wasn't someone who was gonna get his teammates to rally around him. During his time in Washington, he said that leadership was overrated. Nobody in Washington wanted him except the owner. And everyone knows about Dan Snyder and his hands-on style. If he really wanted something, 9.9/10 times he was gonna get it.

Marty while he was working for ESPN said that he couldn't work for someone like Snyder, but Snyder convinced him to take the HC job. At the time, Snyder really knew how to sell a product. Everyone knew that George was not a good fit for Marty Schottenheimer's offense, but Marty when he took the job had no choice but to go with him to start the season. And as you pointed out, it didn't last long. George was cut by Marty after the first two games of 2001. Washington was outscored 67-3 in those two games.
People forget that Marty wasn't able to do much in free agency because the team was so hurt by the cap thanks to all the big moves that were made the year prior. Marty walked into a mess.
Jeff George was hit more than any other QB in history in his first three seasons. A number that still stands to this day. The guy was great. Just horrible teams.

All you "Noodle Arm" haters of Tua need to watch this clip. Jeff George is proof you don't need a cannon arm to win a championship or a passing title. The QB position requires Accuracy, Awareness, Ball placement, Anticipatory skills, pocket presence, footwork. Absolutely doesn't require you to have a cannon for an arm. Noodle arm was the #1 rated QB in the league when healthy. Is it nice to have? Sure it is, it receives attention just like it is right now. Jeff George, Brett Favre, Dan Marino had some of the best arms I have ever seen. But it doesn't solely make you a champion.

George didn't get traded in 1996 because he wanted to be a FA the next year. He was going to get traded to Seattle for Rick Mirer, but he refused. In hindsight, he would have been better off going to Seattle than going to Oakland in FA.

I know june jones was a bad head coach, but he's a great qb coach. His run and shoot offense proved to be effective. He helped develop Hall of famer warren Moon and helped develop another pro bowl qb in chris Miller. In 1995, the Falcons had 3 receievers go over 1,000 yards, including a special teams returner

George had one of the strongest arms I'd say top 5 we're Marino,Elway,George,Favre,Cutler.. 3 of those guys were great, 2 we're good but I think they underachieved I think bad attitude is what separated Cutler and George from the others.. If I'm missing a guy with great arm strength I'd like to hear it, I feel like I'm missing a guy or 2...Vick actually threw darts too, probably stronger arm than Cutler and maybe the others, he's such a great runner I think his arm strength got overlooked..but yeah I'd like to hear some other that threw lasers on the field if I'm missing some

I honestly think Jeff George would have been an all-time great if he had more support, never in his entire career did he have support from a talented coaching staff. The only times he had good coaches they wanted to get rid of him from day 1. He was immature, but a lot of great qbs started out that way.

@@90sSportsNostalgia Turtle Marino is the most overrated QB, those numbers were made because he threw 40 times or more per game, they always justify the turtle for not having a ground attack, but if they didn't it was because of the turtle, poor Jimmy Johnson without the turtle would have done a great job in Miami, but the turtle deprived him of being able to work properly, in the turtle's last season the substitute QB had a 5-0 mark, it was the turtle arriving vs Jacksonville and embarrassing all people of Florida , and yes the turtle had some movements that made nervous even someone highly drugged.

One of my all time faves . Gem to watch his highlights still. But George was a way better athlete than Marino for comparison. Marinos footwork was more disciplined because he had to be but George was way better athlete and he did have great footwork just improvised a lot behind bad lines

I understand the argument but Jeff George wasn't a good passer. Dude had no touch. His whole M.O. was to throw the ball as hard as possible and sometimes change the trajectory. When you watch Marino, he could make all types of throws at different velocities. Every George throw in this video is basically him throwing as hard as possible to a WR running a streak route 20+ yards downfield. Maybe that's an exaggeration, but not by much.
Jeff George was awesome to watch but mostly due to his flawed talent. He was capable of anything both good and bad.

I do slightly disagree with George throwing the ball as hard as possible on every pass as I thought he could put touch on the ball, as changing the trajectory on the pass is part of putting touch on the ball (perhaps I should have used better highlights). I thought Kurt Warner was the best at putting touch on his passes when he needed to and George was nowhere as good as Warner at doing that. But with that said, I thought George could somewhat throw with touch, but maybe I'm wrong and you're right as I got deceived as the ball just comes out of George's hand with such ease but explodes to the receivers. Nonetheless, great comment and thanks a lot.

Johnson was a very good QB, even with WSH despite owner Dan Snyder who apparently didn't like him. While with TB, Johnson wasn't asked to do much like during his days with WSH and MIN.
