Well. They are born to be herding so needs lots of things to do . but also highly intelligent so needs to work with her head too. To be an indoor dog in a flat wouldn't work. Not saying this it's the case. Just seen them work. They are so smart

We were living on a really busy highway and she did not have the freedom she needed. Luckily we were able to move far away and give her a new fresh lifestyle. Thanks for your thoughtful comment.
Yes, we tend to agree with you. As the weather changes here and the days get short, we're not able to get outside and play frisbee several times a day to keep her running so we had to invest in some Kong toys and treat balls, we also play indoor frisbee and other games. Luckily we have a long hallway and it serves as her runway when we're stuck in the house.
Had a sheltie that chased everything for 17 years. Little Andy wore out. Walked down the patio stairs and said “nuff” He worked hard trying to catch EVERYTHING😇

We had a border collie working dog who was an exceptional paddock dog, always a clean muster, no matter how big or rough the paddocks were. As she got older she developed cataracts and lost her confidence. We retired her to a life of lying on the couch in front of the fire. She also started chewing her feet. We solved the problem by changing her diet to one with less protein. They chew because their skin gets itchy. If they aren't getting the exercise they don't need as much protein

Incidentally, her life is so different now ~ we had been living on a busy highway and she did not have a fenced in yard. In her new house Zoey has her own fenced-in yard that she lets us use sometimes. We live in a very quiet low traffic neighborhood now. She has a little boyfriend dog in the yard behind us, and enjoys chasing birds and squirrels around the yard even though they always outrun/outfly her. I still play frisbee with her every day that weather permits, and she hasn't chewed on her paws for a long time. It's so uplifting to see her running free, something she couldn't do before.
Border Collies are one of the most smartest dogs. Zoey knows exactly what you’re saying but acting like she doesn’t. She’s intentionally distracting you and using her cuteness too! She’s thinking, “Okay Mom, you win” by laying on her back. 😂❤

It was my husband who insisted on the border collie - I had two pugs and he said he wanted a "real" dog. He has since passed away, and Zoey is the glue that still exists between us. At the time I did not want the dog, but now I can't imagine life without her. Thanks for your comment @ezzystarr

I had a half border coolie/half german shepard and he was awesome and very protective. Saved me from walking into black bears in my backyard twice by putting the bounce on them. But deer could walk by his dog run and he wouldn't bat an eye at them. He was smart enough to know what was a threat and what was not. Cheers.

I had a bearded collie and Alfie used to herd people. If people visited my house he wouldnt let them out😅 he was brilliant on long walks mountain and hill walking. Beautiful dog these dogs are working dogs they get bored easily.
Zoe is a gorgeous little tart!!xx but yes, my dear "Sandwich" used to run in front of my van, the full 6km home from the bakers every morning and then we'd go to work He never stopped!! Borders have to be busy,busy, busy!!!
She may have picked up a grass seed, or a tiny spec of grit. Investigate that thoroughly. There's bound to be something there. If it is boredom the best investment you can give her is a Frisbee Ring, not the disk, it has to be a ring. It will fly for 50 yards and she will go non stop for 30 throws... which means she will run a mile in about 10-15mins before collapsing in a heap.

I'm on my 3rd border collie and have taken care of 2 others. Saying they need "exersize" is not the whole truth. They simply need structure, companionship & input. Take your dog with you everywhere you go. Show them everything around you & teach them constantly. A simple thing like getting my slippers makes Ruby so happy. Talk to them like a person, not that stupid dog trainer lingo. Etc....Worlds smartest dog, treat it with respect and you'll get it back ten fold.

Pour love on her by giving her tasks she so very much needs for stimulation and satisfaction.❤ Dear Zoey is one of God's perfect, beautiful creatures needing Love. She NEEDS to feel USEFUL,like all living beings. I'm more into larger intellegent breeds but I've always had a soft spot for collies and other working dogs. My first dog was a kelpie, a farmer friend sold her to us as she was deemed useless as a working dog ... the runt so to speak and not smart but she was stupid fast. I'd ride downhill bmx and she'd be slowing down for me.
sounds like you are on the right track, dietary issues are the root of many problems with dogs. They get allergies and sensitivity to the dry kibble formulations. I have gone back and forth for 40 years on how to feed, trying to utilize kibble to some degree because of cost and convenience. It just never works out, I have once again settled on a total cook from scratch diet, brown rice, boiled chicken, cooked ground beef, boiled and fried eggs, canned carrots, canned green beans, baked winter squash, cottage cheese, turkey, ham, fish, roast beef on occasion. The dogs are thriving, fed twice daily with an evening snack.They stay trim with this, full robust coats, normal bowels, no signs of itching, stomach upset, no bad symptoms.
We do our best - take her out 2-4x a day and play frisbee for running when weather permits. During winter it's a little bit trickier. We play "indoor frisbee" (I think we posted a video of this) and have a long hallway in the house she uses as a runway. But your question is well-founded ~ this breed of dog needs a lot of stimulation and exercise, which often helps keep her human servant more fit as well.
Hi, my mum's dog started chewing on her paws suddenly and they were real sore. It was odd and got my mum thinking - turns out the polish/cleaner she'd been using on her laminate wood floor was the culprit. Stopped using the polish and the dog's feet got better.
Sometimes dogs chew on paws due to allergies or very dry/irritated paw pads. With winter here it's important to clean dog paws of most ice-melting salts.
Some dogs have allergic reactions to grass seeds which causes irritation on their feet and causes them to chew. But she's not chewing the front paws??? I would take her to a vet to see if it is allergies......
Luckily that is an older video, and since that time we have visited the vet, changed her diet, and moved to a new place where she has her own fenced yard and her paws have been perfect ever since. Christine, I know you from a TH-cam site, Remembering ____. I don't use my real name on TH-cam. I live in SW PA. I had a Jack Russell who would chew on her feet every September/October. I could never figure out what the problem was, but I wondered if it was something in the grass at that time of year. She didn't chew her paws at any other time.
Does her [hopefully competent] vet have any prognosis on why she persists in doing that? My God!...isn't she the most precious lady?!...such pleading, expressive eyes!
I will preface by saying we love our vet, they take great care of Zoey. But with paw-chewing there is no textbook solution. The first trip to the vet resulted in a scented oil plug-in that did not work. The second vet solution was an anti-anxiety medicine, which didn't help. The third was a different medication and that didn't help either. So we ended up adding green vegetables to her diet, and invested in some way cool Kong treat balls that both challenge her and reward her efforts. Every day that weather permits I take her outside and we play frisbee to keep her active and running, sometimes three or four times a day in summer. Helps the human stay fit too. She hasn't chewed her paws in a couple months, thank goodness. Not sure how much this matters in the scheme of things, but she is very sensitive and doesn't like to be scolded.

I agree with you @dogfartski. At the time this video was made my husband was dying of cancer and I couldn't leave the house or do much, and it was winter and I talked to the dog a lot. Luckily I did get Zoey to stop chewing on her paws as explained in the video. Also, we moved to a new town six months ago and Zoey lives in a whole new world now. @@ChristineLorraine We make our dog's food at home and feed very little commercial - only a little bit of canned as a supplement. He gets raw chicken wings, roasted chicken breast, a little bit of canned salmon, ground seeds, then he gets a veggie mash consisting of raw and cooked vegetables, cooked whole grain, and beans. He's just about 12 years old and doing great. Loves the cold weather. Never had skin problems, hot spots, etc.
Great that you make your dog food at home, it's much healthier when it's made with ingredients you know are good for your beloved pet. Actually, your dog's food choices look kind of delicious for humans too :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts @sbarr10
@pjtrant Yes, agree about the vet. We did make four trips to the vet for 1. oil scent plugin that didn't work 2. allergy pills that didn't work 3. probiotic didn't work 4. nerve pill to calm didn't work. What we ended up doing was 1. give her more challenges like treat ball, hide and seek, etc. 2. add some green vegetables to her diet, and 3. MOVE we had been living on a busy highway and she couldn't run around so we got a new house on a quiet street where she can run freely on the property without any lines or leashes. We had a Lab that chewed her back paws. This was due food allergies. We changed her diet and no more chewing. The Vet was spot on…

A raw meaty bone provides plenty of chewing goodness and cleans our puppy teeth as well! Much better than chewing paws....

Have you looked at k9 zinc deficiency. We have a Sheltie/Border mix that has the same issue.

I agree with you @dogfartski. At the time this video was made my husband was dying of cancer and I couldn't leave the house or do much, and it was winter and I talked to the dog a lot. Luckily I did get Zoey to stop chewing on her paws as explained in the video. Also, we moved to a new town six months ago and Zoey lives in a whole new world now. We still can't believe that just a little more playtime and a dash of vegetables could make such a huge difference in our dog's well-being.
@@ChristineLorraine We make our dog's food at home and feed very little commercial - only a little bit of canned as a supplement. He gets raw chicken wings, roasted chicken breast, a little bit of canned salmon, ground seeds, then he gets a veggie mash consisting of raw and cooked vegetables, cooked whole grain, and beans.
He's just about 12 years old and doing great. Loves the cold weather. Never had skin problems, hot spots, etc.
Great that you make your dog food at home, it's much healthier when it's made with ingredients you know are good for your beloved pet. Actually, your dog's food choices look kind of delicious for humans too :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts @sbarr10

Maybe her paws are itchy or she is bored. Either way you shouldn’t scold her. Take her to the vet and ask about allergies.
@pjtrant Yes, agree about the vet. We did make four trips to the vet for 1. oil scent plugin that didn't work 2. allergy pills that didn't work 3. probiotic didn't work 4. nerve pill to calm didn't work. What we ended up doing was 1. give her more challenges like treat ball, hide and seek, etc. 2. add some green vegetables to her diet, and 3. MOVE we had been living on a busy highway and she couldn't run around so we got a new house on a quiet street where she can run freely on the property without any lines or leashes. She hasn't had a bloody paw since. Thanks for your thoughtful comment. It's amazing the lengths we go to for our dogs sometimes but entirely worth every bit of effort.

If she is chewing her feet, it's not funny. There is a reason for that and needs to be looked into. Could be an allergic reaction to something.
