My second WILD CAMP || Almost fell off Aber Falls! - Part 2

  • Hi everyone, welcome back to PART TWO of my amazing solo camp!
    Two weeks ago I set off to the Carneddau mountain range of Snowdonia, a magical and peaceful place full of mystical wild ponies and colourful heather and bilberry bushes, waterfalls, rock formations, babbling brooks and the mighty Aber Falls!
    This is definitely a massive challenge for me after only venturing into Snowdonia for hikes a small handful of times. With a full backpack and side bag for my drone(for easy access) I set off on a self plotted, pathless route up the Afon Anafon to the reservoir before climbing towards the summit of Llwytmor at 849 m.
    I hope you enjoy this one, I had the most amazing experience, it is such a magical place.
    Thank you for watching... xx

      Hi Lilu, loving your videos of your adventures, really entertaining 👍.
      A little tip that I do to save water on cleaning cook ware is to take wet wipes with me. They are very good at removing residue, and then I put them in my waste zippy bag to take home after. They ate good for freshening up after a long day too!.

    I have been Wild Camping for years, but after losing my Dad and now looking after my 84 year old Mother I don't get out so often. Good on you Girl, enjoy the great outside because it's good for your Soul. Barefoot from time to time is good for Grounding yourself with our Mother Earth too, but then that's probably the old Hippie in me, living so close to Stonehenge and many other Structures our Ancestors built along the Leylines ❤🙏

    I'm an ex soldier. In the army we had 1 litre of water to last for 24 hrs and with that we had to cook, drink, wash, shave and wash up. It can be done. Always put a drop of water into your cooking pan straight away to stop the residue from drying and going crusty. Use grass or leaves to get the worst off and always take anti bacterial wipes as they're a god-send. Use a blunt knife/spoon/finger nails for loosening anything that's stuck on to your plates and pots. The last thing you want is food poisoning or something when you're alone in the mountains. I really enjoyed your video and am a new subscriber, looking forward to watching more.

    Great video. The stone walls are sheep folds. It's where the hill farmers used to put the sheep when they bought them down from the hills, ready for tupping(mating) shearing and sorting the lambs ready for the market.

    Great to see you getting out there and enjoying yourself, congratulations on challenging yourself and succeeding, it's a great feeling! Some answers/ tips you for you. - Wash up? - Use umscented wet-wipes 👍Save weight? Get a lighter tent, I'd recommend a Lanshan 2 (make sure you do 'the mods'). Always take earplugs (especially in windy conditions). Spend time looking for a flat piece of ground to pitch on (sliding is awful!). Always take a paper os map (just in case your phone gets damaged/ decides not to work). Look at your map and follow paths (or if you are bushwhacking, use the map to look at the contours)

    Hi Lilu, like others already mentioned, use moss/grass to clean pots. Instead of dropping weight, you could re-distribute it by using a chest rig and a bottle holder you can attach to a belt. Might help with stability too.

    Hi, when you are in remote area’s think what you would have done had you broke your ankle, leg or worse, then if your phone had not worked or you hadn’t got a signal and you didn’t say whether or not you had a paper OS map and compass with you, small problems can quickly turn in to larger ones, I was watching a video the other day about a Garmin intouch Satellite transponder, not sure how the system works or if there are any running costs involved, they cost around £329, and they could give you peace of mind when wild camping and remember they don’t rely on phone masts etc, good video by the way, very enjoyable, tfs, Mike

    • @AdventuresWithLilu
      @AdventuresWithLilu  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I gave my sister regular updates on os maps where I was, and always have paper map and compass back up. But yes has good phone signal unlike in the peak district this weekend. Iv looked at the garmin but the subscription is quite high for how much I'd use. But yes I'm looking into better ways to keep safe. Thank you for ur advice 😊

    You managed to negotiate the 'Bad Step' then came a cropper leaving the path in the wrong place, we all make mistakes and learn from them, I've had one or two near-death incidents, it certainly makes you more aware and careful in the future, one thing I would say is always have a printed OS Explorer map to refer to and a compass, you learn wild camping that navigation is vitally important, gps is great but will never replace a map. I said I thought I recognised Afon Goch in the last video, it is a wonderful area, but as you found out, the terrain is tough! When you were pointing out Snowdon I think you were looking towards Elidir Fawr and surrounding summits. Getting the weight down makes camping so much more comfortable, most peoples first target is 3kg for the big 3 i.e. Tent, Backpack and Sleep System (bag and mat), I'm at 2.85kg at the moment and it just feels easier being lighter! Always make sure your sleeping bag is sufficiently warm though, you should be comfortable with just merino base layers, too many layers can actually be less efficient and cause issues with moisture which can actually make you cooler, I do also get cold feet though and have Rab fleece and down booties, plus some of those toe warmers you can get. For sitting around I have down insulated trousers which are a godsend, with a suitably warm down jacket you should always be warm enough, I have an Airhole ski mask too which is brilliant, and as you found out, be very careful making sure your pitch is as flat as possible! I don't cook in pots anymore, just have one pot for boiling water, day one I pack burritos, onion bhaji's, pasties etc. to snack on, then have the dehydrated camping meals, they might be pricey but they're packed full of calories which you need, and you never have washing up, one last thing, I gave up on pack covers and use drybags inside my packs for everything, helps keep everything bone dry at all times and it's easier for access, I have several drybags of differing sizes in different colours to organise stuff, which I find makes life easier, you can also empty your pack in heavy rain or on boggy ground without everything getting soaked, but well done, this was a great adventure, I'm local so really enjoyed watching you enjoy what I consider my back garden.... and I have to commend you for picking a tough route, that's a proper adventure!

    • @AdventuresWithLilu
      @AdventuresWithLilu  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh yes, I did always have a map and compass with me as a backup but didn't show it. I use dry bags too to separate stuff, and I think I got myself cold from sitting out in the draft too long, maybe. Thank you for all the advice, very useful and thank you for watching!

    Good video. Good story telling. Regarding water, I usually aim to camp near a water source. Regarding a camp spot, always aim to find a flat spot although I'm sure you know that. Regarding weight, I think the most effective thing you could do is replace your tent; cheap options would be a Lanshan 1 or 2, or a Decathlon Forclaz 1 Man Trekking Dome Tent - MT900 or a Forclaz 1 or 2 Man Trekking Tarp Tent - MT900, or if you are prepared to spend a bit more, a Durston Xmid 1P or 2P Solid, all these tents are around 1kg or less. If possible, only carry 1ltr of water. Regarding keeping warm, put your waterproofs over your thermal jacket/leggings. Look forward to the next video.

    Like Jason already said to clean pots boil a small amount if water and use a clean brillo sponge. Keep making hot drinks to stay warm , do zips and buttons all the way up, to stop the cold from creeping in your outer layers.... boil up a bottles worth of water ( if you have that much left , if not use less) pour it back into your water bottle and put it in your sleeping bag 10 to 20 mins before you go to bed ,, keeps your feet toastie.. then use the water for breakfast.. you will have put things in your bag that you didn't use.. ditch them next time.. if it's not going to save your life it's going to make it harder.. strip your kit down... play safe and shine on xxx

    Another excellent video. Not too far from my home. As you say, far too many people at the falls. It's a bizarre feeling after seeing no one for a few days to suddenly see people again. It makes you feel slightly down altho it soon wears off.
    I use toilet roll to remove the most of the mess on the dishes then antibacterial wipes. Also if you know that you will be near a river later that day simply put the dirty dishes in a plastic bag until you get to the river and then wash them.
    On keeping warm the secret is don't get cold. As soon as you start to feel yourself cooling down get in the tent and put some layers on. Getting warm again is much harder than staying warm. A woolly hat even in the summer will keep you warm in the evenings. Get some waterproof socks. I know boots are waterproof but waterproof socks are a second way to avoid cold feet. Small one size fits all gloves can keep hands warm in the summer evenings especially if you have been walking in sunshine and got a bit of sunburn. Cold hands and feet can make for a cold body. You can start to shiver after getting sun in the day and chills in the evening. Also you looked exhausted when you got in your tent. As I'm sure you know when you're tired you start to feel cold. Have a knap for an hour just to charge yourself up before making your tea. It really helps. Any snooze always helps. 😄😄💤💤💤. Take care . Charlie X .

    A great day for your 2nd day of adventure, and not a bad place to wake up. So hard going when not on a path, hats off to you, plus with all the recording and setting up for walk by's AND drone👏. The way you came down was the way I went up, didn't see a soul from Aber till the end of the day.
    The 'moment' you had near the end went ok, thankfully, although I bet it didn't seem OK at the time! It's a rite of passage to experience a near Death situation, but make that the only one, ok, cheers👍😉.

    Great adventure, my tip for bed time is don’t go to bed cold, a sleeping bag won’t warm you it only traps your warmth so make sure you warm up before getting into the bag, a hot chocolate and a couple of jumping jacks . If you can and if you’re near a stream washing your feet before putting on your sleeping socks will warm your feet a treat. Lightning the load…go through your packs after each trip and apart from the essentials take out what you didn’t use..have a great next trip looking forward to seeing more of your adventures

The downs are quite a lot harder than the ups ( I found this myself) I'd suggest lengthening your load straps on the downhills to push the weight back a little and help with your balance. Thanks for a really great video, happy to Subscribe and look forward to more adventures. David

    On washing up: Wool base layers & socks stink far less, not sure if yours are wool or synthetic. For your face/quick swipe of bits that need a wash, bring a long a couple of wipes designed for babies ( travel size or a few in a plastic bag/other container--loads of ideas online to make your own if you prefer not to buy this kind of product too), and just pack the used ones back out. Minimal weight in your pack, but a good psychological boost when you've been sweating and water is in short supply. Thanks for sharing your adventures!

    Hi, the reason you may be getting a little cold when you’re sleeping is that after looking at the sleep mat that you are using it only has an R value of 1.6. That’s okay in the summer, but I think you would need to be looking at something with an R value of three or over for when it gets a little colder.
    A great video, and what a fantastic place to go camping, very inspirational.

    When it comes to having to clench your butcheeks to grip the hillside to prevent you sliding down, that's certainly something!
    And then to have a near death experience only to be saved by some other walkers - what an adventure :)
    Go you!
    In answer to your questions at the start:
    - cleaning cooking gear whwn you're not near water: personally if I'm not out for more than one or two nights' wild camping, I literally lick my spork clean and with a tiny bit of my carried-water, wipe my cup 'clean' with a lightweight cloth I bring. I only carry a titanium cup which I use to boil water to add to trekking food bags (dehydrated ones) which I eat the food directly out of. Although I'm now thinking about useing cous-cous and something tasty to add to it in future which will mean the cup gets some actual food in it! If you're out for longer, you'll invariably come across a water source you can use to wash your kit with (avoiding harmful chemicals and all that of course).
    - sitting inside/outside the tent: obviously depends on the weather but if possible I tend to sit on a rock or tree stump to take in the views or I use a spare length of ground sheet which I can also use under my tent or bivvy if the ground's rough. Sometimes you have to grin and bear the cold for the views which you'll remember more in a few weeks' time. Alternatively, I more often tend to use a bivvy set-up rather than a tent which means you can get cosy in your sleeping bag and bivvy bag under a tarp if you want to, and still take in the views. And at night if you happen to wake, you get to look at the stars in the night sky (unless it's pissing it down)...which is stunning.

  • @life-outdoors
    @life-outdoors ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Cleaning pots depends on what it is and how much water I have. I will often swill it with water and drink it. Not the most appetising but it's ok. I sometimes use biodegradable baby wipes and bag them with the rest of my waste. I use the wipes on me too at the end of the day if I can't bathe. Baby wipes will remove most stuff.
    If you find it cool, it often can be if you are tired. Warm up and then spend small amounts of time outside. I'm lucky that I don't feel the cold.
    For your backpack, have a look at how it should be fitted and adjusted, there's probably videos out there. The weight should be on your hips and just balanced by your shoulders. It will make it more stable once correctly packed evenly and fitted to your back.
    Great filming and editing, you have improved a lot since your earliest videos. I look forward to seeing your next.

    Fair play for getting stuck in and having a go. My advice to you is when at stop and assess your gear, look at what you need not want and start from there. The more camps you do the more experience you gain. Buying expensive gear is not always the answer but sometimes is essential especially when it comes to weight. From your videos it always looks to me you are carrying far too much weight which can be a struggle especially when you are not used to it.
    Keep going, your doing great 👍

    I use a bivi bag to put everything in but I don't do them up too tight to avoid the condensation issues, it stops everything sliding about and yes I had that for a while too before my fix. Oh yeah, waterproof cases for phones - for water sports usually but hey if it works.
