This is why the 1st Transcontinental Railroad completed in 1869 (the Same one in the videos) for their earliest 50 Years + - built wooden snowheds over the entire line between Truckee and Emigrant Gap. As snowplow technology progressed the sheds were almost totally removed. Some concrete ones still exist at Important points... Even nowdays the Railroad starts clearing snow - like in the video - from the very beginning of storms. You don't mess around with the Sierra in Winter! Remember. In 1869 The Railroad was the 'Freeway' of the times. An Incredible improvement in Commerce and Personal Travel. :)

We lived in Reno in the '60's. I LOVED all the snow, and loved driving in the snow. I don't remember people having snow tires back then. You just had to learn how to drive in the stuff. My father and I got stuck up on the pass coming down from Lake Tahoe. Spent most of the night waiting for the snowplows to open the road. About 5:00 a.m., we got going. We were in a VW bus with bias tires, no chains. The snow was coming down in big flakes but were swirling in all directions - very hypnotic. Had to guess where the road was using the snow sticks as guides - these were little poles sticking up about 6 feet.

Trust me, it can still be an adventure there if you're caught in an early season snow. Working in South Lake one day they said it would snow by 4pm. Finished at 330 thinking I'd beat it. They didn't say it was coming from the east. Fun ride down 50 back to Carson City in an Aveo. NHP stopping people without chains on the way up so they didn't bother me on the way down but even sticking to 35mph, some of the ride wasn't under my own power. Luckily not a lot of traffic mid week.

    • @WxChasing

Too many vehicles to list. I have a couple of Subarus and a Rav4 Hyrbid, all lifted with all terrain heavy snow rated tires. I also have studded ice tires for the rare ice storms but I am located in the deep south and snow more than a foot is just extremely rare here but it only takes a few inches to cause huge problems. When I fly into these big snow events in NY and CA then I'm left renting. I focus on ground clearance more than anything else because getting stuck on the frame is very difficult to dig out. Every other situation is easier to manage. I carry water and snacks for a few days, dress warm with layers and keep my suitcase in the vehicle with extra clothes. Carry a tow rope, shovel and good snow brush. I've been stuck before but nothing I couldn't get out of pretty quick. I pull a ton of people out every event to try and keep fate on my side. The most important thing is knowing the limitation of the vehicle and experience driving in snow. I also turn all the baby sitter aids like traction control, vehicle stability and everything else off. Knowing how to drift and use power to steer comes in handy to keep momentum in deep snow. One day I'll do a video on my personal cars. They really are quite unique. I buy a new snow shovel every time I fly in to a storm. I buy about 15 snow shovels a year and donate them to stranded motorists too deep to pull on the way out of town.
