Toyota Tundra Gen 1 - WORST Truck | I ever bought ????

  • While up in NH attempting to rescue the forgotten VW BUS SO23, my Gen 1 had a drivetrain failure. I found and bought the cheapest Generation 1 Toyota Tundra I could find to keep the rescue mission going. How Bad is it? Can it be fixed? I thought the first drive was eye opening until I crawled underneath the truck and checked the entire frame. IT'S BAD!!!!

WOW that's got some dangerous rust issues. The person who sold it to you must be feeling pretty pleased with himself .
I think the only hope you have is Mustie 1 , his welding skills and his famous chain lube.

A Friend of mine had the same issue with a Tundra, The Service Manager took pictures of the inside and outside, showed it had been well cared for. Then Pictures of the frame which was a bad as yours, sent them to the powers that be, they put a new frame under it, and did a few other non warranty repairs, got it back and it cost him right around a Thousand Bucks.

amazing trucks, I did that a few years back when i could not clime under the vehicle due to health issues, later to find it has some serious rust. thankfully my brother was able to weld it up and my father helped with a sticker. drove it for 5 years, still runs and drives amazing. But frame is to the point i can not get it inspected anymore. Looking at another one that an 04 double cab with a supposedly clean frame, well see. Would love to have another that runs and shifts as well as my current one does, but can bomb down some dirt roads without worrying about the frame breaking completely lol, amazing vehicle though! so much so I can't see myself buying anything else.

I have a 1st gen Tundra access cab. I bought it brand new and still own it. I live in Manitoba Canada and this is a daily driver and see’s it’s share of winter road salt. The first thing I had done before I even took possession of it was to get it undercoated. The frame and undercarriage is still solid as a rock with minimal rust. Another thing is when a lot of people wash their vehicles they spend all their time on the shiny topside of the truck but none on the undercarriage. I thoroughly wash the frame, suspension, etc. as best that I can and this goes a long way to keeping things solid for years to come. Unfortunately when you buy a used Tundra as the one in the video you have no control over how the previous owner/s have maintained it, can’t blame the truck for that.

The generation of Tundra that you bought is infamous for major frame rot in your neck of the woods. Toyota should have been held more accountable for the rust problem, but some folks did get SOME repair work performed by Toyota (not enough). As for repairing "Salsa", yes, Mustie1 knows how to do it (you've probably already resolved this issue by now). It sucks, but the New England winters with mass amounts of road salt destroys all vehicle chassis unless they've been heavily treated pre-winter with an oil solution.. It's a shame - I liked "Salsa"! ☝☝☝☝☝☝☝

Well Jason when you get ready I'm doing a total rebuild on a 5.7 Vortec 2000 K 2500 the motor only had 85,000 original miles was parked 8 years and guess what the whole top end of the motor on the inside was rusted from all the hot and cold Cycles I got her up and running and snap a valve spring luckily it didn't suck the valve a 4 bolt main motor I'm doing a real rebuild on you can still see the cross hatch in the cylinders but I'm putting new rings as well bearings everything and the truck originally was built in Texas only two little rust holes in the cab corners and that's it interior is in great condition I bought the truck to do a cabover camper build to go up in the mountains before I get too old and die so when I finish the motor I'll let you know you may be interested it be great to own a Chevy believe that my 96 Silverado is my daily driver. Dear 5150mxVV
👍👌👏 Maaaan, I still think that the clean red metallic Tundra is worth saving. It "simply" needs a frame off restoration. If you weld this one's frame sturdy/solid again and put some special Mustie1 sauce on the undercarriage and in/on the frame, it could last a really long time. 2) I don't know if the workshop of Watch Wes Work is far away from you. But I guess that he would definitely be the right guy to diagnose and fix the luxurious Infinity. Although, because of all the electronic bugs, you maybe better get rid of it and fix your 3 other Tundras well. At least 2 of them.
    3) By the way: The great guy from channel No Nonsense Know How is also a Tundra fan. Maybe he would like to buy or fix your Tundras (or even the Infinity)? Maybe he likes to make a different road trip (instead to Las Vegas and the desert to the the rust belt)? Asking him does not cost anything. And I bet that his gem Jen likes VW bugs and busses. I also bet that you would like their cute little dachshund Gus. 💚
Thanks a lot for making explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.

My last 2 vehicle purchases Jason were one from Florida the other from Tennessee And thankfully they were brought to the notorious rust bucket state of Vermont where the salt has replaced the plow. I honestly looked at 75 cars for sale in Vermont every one was a rot box with the exception of a couple with bad drive lines (mechanics specials ) have come to the conclusion a northeast used car is more than likely going to have three tires in the grave and the other on a banana peel. You can try AUTOMOTIX they sell good used frames for a little over grand might be worth a try.

The rest of the truck seems quite good, engine and so on. Get rid of the black one, too many electrical issues to deal with. Someone will buy it for parts. I hope you made it to your destination and back home without many issues. I am not wanting to sound negative BTW but life is to short to be messing around with junk when you could be working on a restoration. 👍👍

Why not put the white Tundras chassis (aka Frame), assuming its good, under the red Tundra?

I think the best thing to do: is to turn off Facebook market place !. Here in the UK, the rotten jeeps would be worth a lot in parts. Might be worth selling them for spares & repair and cut your losses. They are complicated vehicles, so best to pool your cash into one very good one…

Just don't hit any big pot holes in the Gen 1 Tundra. You'd probably find yourself sitting on the road with a steering wheel in your hands and the truck in pieces. 🤔

Do you still have the camper shell? I need one for my 1st gen 2002 same exact truck. They're super hard to find. I will purchase from you.

Sad when you could trust the qx56 more than a yota. I have an 04 qx56 which must have a dash light fetish itself.

That's a truck driven in the salt!
You need a truck that was rolled, partially burned, or something where the frame survived but the rest is junk...
