    NEVER melt candle wax over direct heat!!! Use a double boiler. Direct heat may result in the wax bursting into flames!!

      @@gregengel1616 You are missing something . A candle remains largely solid. The solid wax and small pool of liquid wax conducts the heat away from the wick and prevent runaway combustion.
      Only the vapourising wax in the wick can support combustion.
      A pan full of liquid wax is only slightly different from a pan full of Jet A1 fuel (Kerosene) - they are both paraffins .
      If a drop of that liquid wax splashes on the hot stove top ,you have a major problem!

  • @catherinekeehn9736
    @catherinekeehn9736 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    First, use a can from soup or veggies. Oil the can before adding wax and ingredients. Use a metal washer to hold wick to bottom. Fill with wax. After it set, cut bottom lid off and push candle out of can. You have a free standing pillar candle.

      So what happens when the Cinnamon stick catches fire, or the rind of the fruits?

  • @aabsc
    @aabsc ปีที่แล้ว +1030

    I see 2 major problems: The fresh orange is going to start rotting in no time, you need to use dried orange slices. Most importantly, once the wick goes down to were it crosses the cinnamon stick, the cinnamon stick will catch fire and likely cause the glass to break resulting in leaking wax and a potential fire.

      I was burning a homemade candle that I had gotten at a baby shower. The glass busted. Thank goodness I was in the room when it busted. If I ever make my own, I’ll be making sure it’s rated for candles.

    Used to work in a candle factory for 10 yrs. People, save yourself the risk. BUY the candle don't try to make it yourself.
    1. You've no idea the flashpoint of the wax (both melting on stove & it melting in the glass)
    2. You have to make certain the glass you're putting it in is able to handle the heat produced.
    3. Objects like the cinnamon stick & even the fruit slices can burn because the wick is NOT stable within the wax.
    It's just too easy to buy inexpensive candles. Don't risk the fire. smh

ALSO BEST NOT TO USE EATING PANS TO MELT WAX IN.... SOME RESIDUE MAY REMAIN AFTER TRYING TO CLEAN IT OUT. THE WICK DESIGNED TO BURN A 1/2 INCH DIAMETER CANDLE MAY NOT BE Adequate for a 2 - 3 inch diameter candle. better to use bulk wax / parafin and wicks designed for the size you use. rather tahn melting already made candles, save them for burning.

It is almost always cheaper to buy the bulk wax for a small project at the grocery store or better, at the hobby shop, where you can get all of the supplies you might need.
    I do want to join in and continue the caution to only melt wax in a double boiler, safety is a must.

    In addition to the possible additional hazards of cracked glass and the contents esp the cinnamon stick catching fire, when melting wax, one should always use a double boiler to reduce the risk of the wax fumes catching fire. Always have some baking soda and, or an ABC extinguisher nearby to smother flames

      Do you still need to use a double boiler if you have induction cooktop?

    • @larryclemens1850
      @larryclemens1850 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Magnus_Magnusson_702 Good question. What a double boiler does is limits the temp to the boiling point of water so the parafin doesn't reach its flash point ( it also limits the amount of vapour produced). So, I would say a double boiler is a pretty smart safety precaution. You don't need to buy a customized double boiler; a smaller pot fit inside a larger pot of water will produce the same effect.

    I was eager to make this wax dish. I am from Colorado, no one eats wax here. I was pleasantly surprised, although the dish was a bit bland. You have to swallow somewhat quickly, or your mouth stays coated for 96 hours. I came back into the room after pausing the video with the wax melting, and noticed that the chef put fruit in it and served it up in glass cups. Quite thoughtful. Anyway, add some salt, pepper, and a bit of onion powder to the wax just as it's finished melting. This creates a good flavor, but again, eat it quickly. BTW, cleaning the pan is simple, just soak it in drano and antifreeze overnight. No more wax in the pan.

    It’s a nice idea, thanks for sharing but the problem that I see is the big piece of cinnamon in the way of the wick, which could catch fire, making the glass break from the intense heat. One of the major causes for home fires are candles. Folks, be mindful and careful when you mmake and or buy candles.

    Or you could just buy a scented candle for a lot less money!
    4 candles = $12
    Cinnamon sticks = $5
    Orange = $1.50
    Lemon = $1.00
    Total cost $19.50
    Or you buy a scented candle for $7
    You do the math! Plus, the cost of a glass, a messed up skillet, your time and so forth!

      Cheaper to use dollar tree candles. They come in the glass pillars. One of those melted in a pot filled with water would suffice. The other stuff is pretty cheap here in NYC. I can usually get a good lemon for a buck or better yet a low quality one for a quarter in some of the bodegas near me. Limes are even cheaper. Cinnamon sticks can be bought by weight or in bulk-type bags at many shops. I could make something like this for less than seven bucks. Much less.

      Better is buy a thrift store pan and reserve it for crafts. Then you don't need to clean the pan at all. Do bag it if storing it. In hot temps the wax can drip and ruin things. Paper bag then a plastic bag and it should be good to store in a cool dry cabinet, etc.

    • @AFineLineA
      @AFineLineA ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's rubbing alcohol which if lightly rubbed around the outside of a tapered candle will bring back a bit of sheen to it, acetone nail polish remover, vinegar and soap, heat the pan till just melted then submerge or pour cold water into the pan and it solidifies the wax that can then most times be broken up and removed. Do be careful of any spatters should they occur to avoid burns. Clean with hot soapy vinegar & water when done and check for left over wax bits. Repeat if needed. There are others, but one should work for you or look online. :)

      I lived in a home lit by candles and Aladdin lamps as a child. My mother would put candlesticks into a pan of boiling water to get melted and hardened stubs out of the holder. She let the pan go cold and the waste wax could be lifted free of the surface and was good for lighting the fire in twists of newspaper.
