  • Welcome to Proficiency #4 in my Flight Assist Off Beginner Series. This training mirrors my regiment for Newton's Gambit (forums.frontier.co.uk/showthr.... I tend to divide beginner FAOFF skill into 5 proficiency levels. The exercises shown here in this video comprise all of the exercises for Proficiency Level #4.
    Check out the previous videos in this training series here:
    Training #1: [ • Elite: Dangerous - "Fl... ]
    Training #2: [ • Elite: Dangerous - "Fl... ]
    Training #3: [ • Elite: Dangerous - "Fl... ]
    A last note: As with anything that requires the development of skill, it is best to just do it. Most full FAOFF Commanders, and those who aren't full FAOFF but use it regularly, didn't have guided training exercises. Rather, they created their own exercises to develop their skills. They just stuck to it, and eventually became proficient.

    I can imagine the office workers and residents looking out their windows in these trenches like "wtf is that FDL doing in here?"

    This would be awesome as an actual in-game training exercise. FD could have entire stations dedicated to training where we could test fly ships with FA off like in the video and try out weapons for a few minutes. Or they could just integrate CQC into the main game.

      The beauty if ED is that is is available in game. I tried the first exercise from the first video today. I manged several minutes before I got a "speeding" warning", did not manage to follow the station around but:
      1 - it was fun
      2 - I did not crash into anything despite doing my best to spy on the inhabitants.
      I switched FA back on but will definitely try again one day.

    Man, these videos are invaluable. Started training last night, forgot my SRV on a mission this morning, turns out I can scoop surface salvage with a stock Sidewinder. Thanks very much, cmdr.

    You have the sort of calm and clear speaking proficiency that reminds me of one of those tour guides on a Disney theme park ride. Like a seasoned veteran at communication. "Ladies and gentlemen, if you'll have a look to starboard you'll notice a wanted Type-7. Not to worry as our little Sidewinder comes fully armed. We'd like to remind you to remain fully seated, observe all safety protocols and enjoy the ride. Just a reminder ladies and gentlemen, there is no flash photography permitted while in combat."

      Did you seriously take on passengers in a sidewinder for these maneuvers? :-) It would be hilarious.

    Once again, super good information. This video has me inspired to work some more on my FA off. Can't wait for your video on quieting your ship.
    I love FA off if for no other reason than it gets really quiet in your ship because it isn't fighting itself constantly.
    Very inspired and heading off to practice. Thanks again for the video series. I'm lovin' it. :)

    Good set of videos CMDR, as a fixed wing pilot, as a job IRL, the concept of fa off flying is difficult to get despite trying on a number of occasions. This guide has been quite easy to follow and I agree with another commenter here that techniques outlined are a lot like learning to fly. The 2 concepts you reiterate remind me of the Airbus golden rules. Nice job CMDR! o7

    I came to this series because I was interested in seeing an overview of the benefits of FAOFF and what it would take to git gud at it. Now I watch them as I eat meals because they're so relaxing and fascinating. Watching you perform these maneuvers is like seeing a totally complete video game all by itself, and an exciting one at that.
    Once I get a stick I'll come back and go through this training in hopes of developing a fun skill. Maybe it will help me to play the combat game, but what I'm saying is you make flying for flying sake seem noble.

    The concept you discuss from 24:44 to 25:30 are the basis for everything we do from simply standing erect to reaching out to grab an object off the counter to graceful dancing.
    It's the thing that drew me to hockey. These are some of the best skaters in the world they do all kinds of intricate maneuvers but the actual act of skating is the last thing on their minds. Why? Because skating for a hockey player is as second nature (if not moreso) than walking. Think of all of the input required to walk in a straight line while spinning in a circle. We all can do it but we don't actually think about doing it. We just do it. Same with hockey players. (I'm not a hockey player, I just admire that level of skill.
    My goal is to be the same with FA/Off.

    Yeah, it's been a year... but finally putting some work into FA off and it's incredible you took the time to share your insights to this. I started with part 1, but it's incredibly enlightening. I spent maybe 15 minutes trying to orbit a coriolis, fitting inside one of the crevices, even, and practiced landing on an orbital platform about 3 times. The first time took me 4 minutes, the second and third drastically shorter (less than a minute by the end of it). It's still ugly and sloppy, but I can definitely feel more control even with FA on in combat. It's incredible, really. thank you.

    These videos are awesome, keep them up. Convinced me to try to play FA off as much as I can. Only problem is with kb+m, toggling on relative mouse messes up supercruise. Thanks for everything!

      Dilbravishlah mouse is the biggest downside of the faoff. Its really hard to not spin like crazy. And im using low sens. Countering movements of the ship with mouse is really hard.

    First off amazing videos. I started watching these last night and going to start practicing today. I just started playing and I am going to avoid Flight assist so I shouldn't have bad habits. I know you use trackIR. I have an occulus rift and have been trying to fly with the controllers. I have some issues some i think stem from not having enough buttons and controls with the rift controllers. I am getting a HOTAS even went so far as to get pedals. I like flight sims in general so they will get plenty of use.
    A few questions:
    Do you know of a way to turn off activating the chat tab when you look at it? That lockout of my controls messes with me a ton.
    I am going to be joining Newton's Gambit as well FAOFF to me it seems to be the only way to play. I hope the skills carry over to star citizen as well.

    Okay, listen up space marines! It is the year of 3,000 in the good year of our Lord and we have come here to introduce you to a video series to teach you country bumkins how to become the best damned space pilots the world has ever seen.
    Student raises his hand: "Isn't this for a video game made over a thousand years ago"
    Shut up, this is standard learning material for the Space Marine Corps. It worked then for a fictional game, it works now numb nuts!
    (Moxen Wolf's tutorial for FAOFF will one day be real life used for teaching people how to fly in space one day)

    Question - what is your joystick configuration Roll/Yaw ?

    • @moxenwolf1020
      @moxenwolf1020  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On my X52 I just have the default mappings for movement. So on the main stick, roll is moving the stick left and right, and yaw is twisting the stick left and right.

    Question for you: I have a HOTAS, and I struggle with the throttle. I'm used to pressing forward and it going forward at a controlled pace etc., but with FA off in exponentially accelerates. Advice on how to control this so I don't spin out of control?

    • @quantum5661
      @quantum5661 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      uhh... dont push it forward all the way? i dont have a hotas.

    • @moxenwolf1020
      @moxenwolf1020  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's basically about doing micro corrections. I think a really good exercise is just practicing doing a 180 by just giving two thrust adjustments, one at the beginning of the maneuver and one at the end. So that would look like a quick upthrust then back to center, wait for your ship to come around, then a slow gentle down thrust to come back to a balanced level plane.

    • @Beer_Dad1975
      @Beer_Dad1975 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sounds like you aren't setting throttle back to zero once you have reached the speed/vector you want?

    • @57thorns
      @57thorns 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      An orbit is a constant acceleration. To maintain circular orbit you need a constant force towards the center of the circle.
      If you had initial orbital speed from the up thruster and keep pointing you nose toward the tether by a constant putch speed it should work (in theory).

    • @tomekl3476

      Jonny Ray Raygun well. On pc you spin like crazy because of how hard it is to be stable with mouse. Countering movement on mouse is a nightmare. Most of the time you just spin and loose control. Only bad thing on controller i found it lack of precision while aiming and not being able to turn right/left and using right/left thrusters at the same time. Still hotas is the king in this game.

    • @wackyduck3
      @wackyduck3 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tomek L oh good that sounds even worse, i have been having a better and better time with it now after 900 and some change hours of gameplay!

    • @tomekl3476
      @tomekl3476 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonny Ray Raygun I love fighting overall. But without engineers i cant get into pvp. Also i need to use faoff a lot which is not the easiest thing to use on M&KB. I need to spend at least 100h more playtime to even start thinking about pvp. I played a bit with the controller. Its much better for faoff. But sadly its not accurate enough for me (you can have really good aim on controller but im really accurate on pc (most in fps games.) and i want to have that accuracy with me.) Still im thinking about buying hotas. I heard its much better for flying in elite.
