You can get a Citrus Berry before Misty, it gives you 30HP when you are below 50%, and for in the 20-30 level range, it can be 30% of its health. It found on route 6, after you beat Nugget Bridge and the Rocket, but it can help a lot. I hope you see this comment if you don't know about this already (upvotes might help the visibility :) )
impact of being done in post could probably also have the overlay dynamically adjusted so that it adjusts when blaze/overgrow/torrent is active, but *maybe* too much for these early videos
@@pommyadam I think you're right on both counts. I haven't a clue how complicated the change is to make on Scott's end, but I think the starters are usually the first pokemon to get playthroughs and except for them I can think of only... Scyther? A small tip for Fire Red: There's a Dragon Claw TM in Victory road, in the same place as the rare candy. I feel it might be useful for the Elite 4 against Lance and just as neutral coverage.
I know this was recorded a while ago. But this bugged me sooo much I just have to say. Using Rock Slide over Flamethrower while sun is active and in Blaze range... that hurt 😅anyway keep up the good content!
If he knew he would have realized that Flamethrower against Alakazam at 23:18 would have been a one hit, as he was wearing Charcoal AND had his ability up, and his attack was at -1... but I imagine he still thought of Alakazam as the same Special Wall as in Gen 1 (it's "only" 95 now) =D
I guess we can name this video "The importance of Blaze" It just really shows just how important the Starter Abilities (Overgrow, Blaze and Torrent) are, and it is a good reminder for myself to not forget about them. But yeah, Kanto is very rough on Charizard, which was pretty much always the case. I still think it can achieve a respectable result once the playthrough is optimizied though. Oh and I am also expecting Blastoise to crush the time of Venusaur and Charizard.
As an idea for future Charizard runs, you should really consider learning Substitute from the Move Tutor in Fuscia City. Substitute lets you do some pretty big things: For one, it lets you live another hit from a problem mon, like being able to Sub up before facing Blastoise gives you extra time to hit it. Two, it lets you much more easily and safely manipulate your HP into Blaze Range for extra firepower. Blastoise probably doesn't live two Blaze Charcoal Flamethrowers, and a sub would both give you an extra turn in on Blastoise to use two Flamethrowers, and give you extra damage on both Flamethrowers, and not just the second after being put into Blaze from an attack. Three, it also blocks Intimidate and moves like Sand Attack/Featherdance, so you won't have to struggle as hard against pokemon like Arcanine. Substitute was kind of a nothing move in Gen I, but by Gen III it is a proper staple move for solo runs, and the fact FRLG gives you a free tutor for it means it should be something to consider for most pokemon that can learn the move.
I totally agree. Substitute gives immensely good strategic options, the AI is pretty bad at playing around it, and together with weather and Blaze/Torrent you can set yourself up really quickly.
Just some friendly advice: Dragon Claw TM is great Vs Lance and gives great neutral SPECIAL damage Blaze blaze blaze. Gauging the damage you receive to proc plaze is crucial in some battles, especially if you're running Sunny Day. A 100% damage boost to STAB flamethrower is huge if you can get multiple hits with it
Great video! And as funny and completely understandable as the Blaze forgetfulness was, I think it would be seriously helpful in the follow-up for Bruno, specifically. If you plan the Lorelei fight similarly and end up in Blaze range again, you could just not heal before Bruno and it looks like you'd have five one-hits in a row. You could even stay there afterwards for the extra damage on that last beefy Agatha Gengar.
Scott! Great video as always. If you catch a spearow and trade it for the farfetch'd in vermillion city, you won't have to catch two pokemon for cut and fly, as it can learn both! Thought you should know for future fire red runs ❤
Emerald and Leaf Green are my favorite pokemon games -- and Charizard is my favorite starter (yeah, I'm basic) ---- so happy these videos are publicly available now -- and loving the content ramp up
If it's possible, it would be a cool addition to your overlay software if it would include the damage boost from abilities like Blaze when it's active 🙂 From some of your plays it looks like you might just have forgotten it, though - which is understandable as you're mostly playing gen 1. Otherwise great content as always! 😊
Has anyone noticed that the Elite Four have a secondary type as part of their theme? Lorelei is Ice, but her but her Lapras, Dewgong, Cloyster, and Slowbro are all Water, with the Slowbro being the only one on her team without an Ice typing. Bruno is obviously fighting, but, in true Hiker fashion, also has rock/ground types in both Onix. Agatha is a Ghost trainer, but her all of her Pokémon are also Poison. Her Golbat and Arbok give a haunting vibe. And Lance is a dragon/flying trainer. Sure, all his Pokémon look like dragons, but Gyrados, Dragonite, and Aerodactyl are all flying types.
If you use the detector at the spots where the snorlaxes lay (you have to stand on the spots) you can find leftovers. I don’t think that this is useful for a speedrun but perhaps this information may come useful in the future :D
Using the versus seeker also increses enemy levels, going through the top row of bikers on cycling road and then use the vs seeker among all of them gives insane exp. Afterwards you biking down the lane defeating the ones you want, you can fly back up and use the seeker again at the top. Also if you use the bike before entering cycling road you don't get stopped at the gate
I know you already did this runs, but for gen 3 onwards, you can abuse habilities like Blaze and Torrent to sweep some battles. Charizard in special with Sunny Day, a charcoal and a Fire stab can be a destroyer of teams
Hey great video but a tip for you going forward is when you are in the safari zone you can retire after you pick up surf. The retire will teleport you out of the safari zone.
Left Green was my introduction to the Pokemon games and Charmander was my first Pokemon. Assuming I got this the year it came out 8 or 9 year old 4th grader me enjoyed the challenge of dealing with the worse Pokemon for the first 2 gyms.. and that was also my first lvl 100 pokemon... That Charizard holds a special place in my childish heart. Same with my very first shiny (Zubat) that I caught in Emerald
I know this is an old video and i really enjoyed it , and by knowing you I’m you’ll improve much much more .. forgetting blaze again and again was hurting but you can’t be blamed.. you mainly play gen 1 and 2 .. all the best
To those mentioning dragon claw; while it helps vs lance it doesnt really fix the champion battle. He still needed to level up. Also, Scott, it might have been better to lock Charmander into blaze range at the start of many of his tough battles and just smash through with blaze boosted fire atks
Scott: Damge ranges are great! Nothing beats a high percentage damage range! I: Yeah, Blaze carried like a Pro Gamer. :p I wonder if that would be a good (and risky) strategie to use. (in Gen 3 and after) STAB and ability boost could be enough sometimes..
The funny thing with Charizard and Dig Is that despite being underground Magnitude/EQ, still won’t hit it due to the flying typing if I remember correctly
Gen 3 AI, explaining Bruno: if the AI doesn't see a kill with any move then it has a chance to go for a setup move. Amazing that Machamp x4 SE rock slide did not find a range that killed, you must have a lot of defense EVs. Level 56 0 attack Machamp vs 143/206 HP Lv 65
Interesting to see your first approaches of these remakes. Handling the newly added abilities might take some time though, but I guess you will work into it like with everything else. Quick note here: It was good that you didn't hit the Ponyta with Flamethrower, you would have boosted it's fire attacks because of it's Flash Fire ability and it would have taken no damage. In the end, abilities are just an additional thing to look out in future challenges when considering move choices. 🙂
@@Thebald22 Bulbapedia is wrong. You definitely can hit that Ponyta (and Rapidash) with fire moves. th-cam.com/video/lKdO8Ehu-HE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=hx9RZrH_tzb6FZc7&t=6249 I'm honestly surprised that Bulbapedia says it does, since they've been pretty accurate in my experience.

Hi Scott, I know this was a long time ago but nevertheless. Don’t forget once you’re at red health blaze kicks in and boosts fire moves a bunch. Probably better against blastoise than any physical move at that point (unless it’s raining maybe) Edit: ok I see this comes up a few times. I don’t know why the games don’t ever tell you when blaze/torrent/overgrowth is active, but they don’t. Maybe your overlay could help out here? By modifying the move power, at a minimum, but maybe also getting a little more excited in other ways? (Fire around the ability text, Iunno)
Hey Scott! Thanks again for another great video. I'm so excited about the new series! I was thinking about you recently commenting on your vocal strain issues, and I noticed you frequently talk about the same or similar parts in the games because you want to be thorough.. could you not just record a section either once or a few different ways and just drop in the correct chunk of audio depending on what you want to explain? You could just add a small disclaimer if there is something specific for a particular playthrough.. or you could have it part of patreon that people can submit a recording to use in a playthrough? Anyways hope all is well, cant wait for the next one!
Love all your stuff! You were sleeping on Flamethrower in quite a few situations. You'd use Rock Slide or Dig because they had type advantages over the opponent, when Flamethrower still had higher raw damage with STAB. Or it might have slightly less raw damage, but Charizard's Special Attack was ~30 points higher than Physical. And at the end you kept using Earthquake after 1+ Intimidates, making Earthquake way weaker than a raw Flamethrower. Honestly, for the vast majority of situations, raw Flamethrower is all Charizard needs to mow through the game. And you really need to check all your stats before you select something else.
I don't know if you're familiar with the channel eggsecptional (sp?) But they're a fire red specialists that I've learned a lot from, just by watching. They might also help you out, probably way more than they would me since I don't actually do any solo challenges.
I sometimes don’t understand his thinking like at the rival at the rocket hideout he uses rockslide against the pidgeot even though flamethrower has a higher effective power and charizard has higher special attack than attack and pidgeot has lower special defense then defense so flamethrower is better. Then in the same fight he uses wing attack against the alakazam while he just got intimidated while again flamethrower would (probably) kill.
Scott sucks at battling. It’s very frustrating for a guy who literally plays these games for a living to be as bad as he is. I find myself yelling at him through the screen seemingly at least once a video. Oh well. I still watch all his content
Not beating the Elite 4 Round 2 here is like finishing Pokémon GSC without beating Red, hope you will challenge it next time 😢 Furthermore, Sword Dance may have helped a lot in this playthrough. If you can boost once at the start of a fight, it's almost always gg.
I can't wait for the optimised run of charizard, sunny day boosted blaze boosted charcoal stab boosted flamethrower is gonna go so well if you actually use it in the right situations :)
Challenge idea Scott. Charizard vs Gyarados race but they both get dragon type instead of flying 🐉. And, of course, that change affects other Gyarados or Charizard in the game. You pick the generation. You get to face either a gen 1 Gyarados with no weaknesses or a gen 3 special defense beast with intimidate. Sounds fun 😁
I'm not sure if anyone said this already but you could have taught brick break after you come off SS Anne for ease against rock and steel types with the eventual ice/water types
I think Neutral Natures are a Good/Fair choice for Natures in Gen III, Since Most Pokemon have a mixed movepool and Stats. Gen 4 its easier to pick Natures based on the pokemons Move pool and Stats.
I would go +SpA -Def, or -SpDef usually. On Blastoise I'd maybe go +Speed -Def. I think neutral natures are never optimal, as there is always one stat more important than another.
You got the one Hits on Lapras and Slobro due to ITs ability blaze. So you have the sun plus Blaze = I think times 2 on the flamethrower and I think STAB stacks so “in a Pinch” Flamethrower does 2.5 times and if it holds a Charcoal it’s 2.7 time. Feel free to correct me if you see that I’m wrong.
Pick up is banned? In leaf green and fire red it focuses on berries, I think you should choose the nature's that don't boost any stats, that way it's more even across the board when it comes to ranking
Charizard was having an interesting journey in this run.😊 Fire types in kanto are usually having a hard time, but at least some abilities can help or break the run. Using blaze is really risky, but it is worth it alongside sunny day. 😊 By the way you can catch a Meowth south of Cerulean,as your cut user ,and it has pick up ,so you can obtain this way a lot of items. 😊 One thing is for sure.Blastoise is going to dominate kanto for sure.
I understand that this is one of your first playthrough in this game but Charizard easily has the potential to be much better than Venusaur and Mew. Using Blaze + Sunny day effectively would have improved the results by leaps and bounds! So many times a resisted flamethrower is the better option compared to a neutral rock slide/EQ even without the blaze boost and with the boost it's not even a question
From this playthrough, it doesn't seem like you are trained enough yet to take Blaze / Torrent into account in your damage estimations. It made a difference in many situations but you didnt name it I think (against the Lapras it made the difference every time, and it may also have against rival 5's Alakazam or Lances Aerodactyl). Honestly, in general it seems you are still learning to recognize and play around abilities. also poison point (Nidoking) and thick fat (Dewgong) for example.
Hey Scott. Loving the videos as always. You always manage to calm me down with your smood voice and methodical play. I know this video is old but I had a thought for your future run of Charizard. @25:55 could you have tried using slash on the arcanine since the crit would bypass the attack drops? Not sure what the effective damage/damage calc looks like on the back end. I know it’s not as consistent but wanted to throw that out there
Blaze saved you in the Elite Four a lot without you even knowing it a lot of the times lol. Also you should’ve picked up Dragon Claw in victory road. You would’ve swept Lance with it as it uses your Special Attack.
Let's go! Thank you for releasing these amazing FireRed Runs. I'm a dad of 2 girls who love Pokémon. Kat playing SoulSilver Dinah playing Shild. 7 and 10 respectively. We watch your videos together. Thank you

Can I just say how interesting I find it that a Japanese game has a grass (plants) leader named Erkia. Lest we forget what side they were on in the '40's. [Auf der Heide blüht ein kleines Blümelein]
Zard should def use a S.ATK boosting ability, the question is what to Sacrifice for it? Either defense, or maybe phy.atk. Actually does Zard have excess speed? at 10% lower does it lose any relevant speed checks with the speed EVs? Phys.Atk is juuust relevant enough to not want to drop it but it might be fine, Misty might be annoying though. Dragon claw is necessary...

was thinking as he mentioned the E4 that Charizard doesn't have it as bad as he's making it sound, early game is still pretty rough though.
That and a Modest Nature would definitely make the league better. Swap out Rock Slide and keep Rest / Sunny Day
Modest may be gd for E4 round 1 but neutral may be the best overall just due to the nature Charizard learns SD and that will be needed for R2 sweep

Good ol Churrozard
I may be wrong, but I think the tm for dragon claw is I'm victory road. Would probably help with Lance
in some battles you could have started with Charizard pre-damaged in order to activate Blaze boost
So realizing... the speedrun gets a spearow/pidgey and sandshrew instead of oddish. Wonder if that would be more consistent for timing
@@tiemen9095not optimal but safe
You got the one Hits on Lapras and Slobro due to ITs ability blaze. So you have the sun plus Blaze = I think times 2 on the flamethrower and I think STAB stacks so “in a Pinch” Flamethrower does 2.5 times and if it holds a Charcoal it’s 2.7 time. Feel free to correct me if you see that I’m wrong.
You can get berries from those berry spots in the ground, and they refill every x steps.
You forgot blaze and dragon claw!! Noooo 😢 Good video either way!
By the way you can catch a Meowth south of Cerulean,as your cut user ,and it has pick up ,so you can obtain this way a lot of items. 😊
One thing is for sure.Blastoise is going to dominate kanto for sure.
It's funny, I always thought the Gen 1 Charizard back sprite always had a creepy smile.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I understand that this is one of your first playthrough in this game but Charizard easily has the potential to be much better than Venusaur and Mew. Using Blaze + Sunny day effectively would have improved the results by leaps and bounds! So many times a resisted flamethrower is the better option compared to a neutral rock slide/EQ even without the blaze boost and with the boost it's not even a question
Hey hey! Time for my ace and Mega evolution of choice!
I look forward to this video.
"So unless rock slide causes a lot of flinches..." - Proceeds to only use the move once.
Why does it show the tutor moves for Charizard but not for Charmander and Charmeleon?
Hi Scott- curious if you considered using brick break in the rock tunnel on those geodudes/graveler?
I’m surprised we didn’t see Solarbeam, since you were using Sunny Day. It’s great for dealing with rocks and waters…
Probably already on but I would like an effective power update for ability ranges. Didn't see it for blaze.
it is odd in the movepool you dont have megapunch or megakick listed. i guess it is because the are not tms, or the normal later move tutors
These starter pokemon keep getting crazy rolls at low hp!
Hey, how did I miss that your significant other made the final evolution to wife. Congrats my dude!
I guess Venomoth was feeling a little Fergalicious today
"Itz a Flammenwerfer. It werfs Flammen" -I have no idea where it originated
Let's go! Thank you for releasing these amazing FireRed Runs.
I'm a dad of 2 girls who love Pokémon. Kat playing SoulSilver Dinah playing Shild. 7 and 10 respectively. We watch your videos together. Thank you
"I'm sure so many people wandered around not knowing what to do." Really? I talked to Mr. Fuji to get the Poké Flute because if I'm still nearby him after teleporting, it must be because he has something important to say.
Deine Katze ist wunderschön. Ich hoffe, dass dein Kraut deinen Kuchen endlich rasieren wird.
"Doesn't pack the same *punch* as my current normal type move" I see what you did there
Where are the tutor moves in that movepool?
Can I just say how interesting I find it that a Japanese game has a grass (plants) leader named Erkia. Lest we forget what side they were on in the '40's. [Auf der Heide blüht ein kleines Blümelein]
Erika isn't her name in Japanese; most names were translated by NOA
Would Dragon Claw have helped vs Lance?
Gotta wonder how this run would of gone if Charizard got access to Solar Beam in this generation instead of having to wait until Gen 4.
Yeah, now that cat is the owner of your keyboard, you'll only be able to use it if he lets you XD
i like how erica became the new lt surge for this run ^.^
Zard should def use a S.ATK boosting ability, the question is what to Sacrifice for it? Either defense, or maybe phy.atk. Actually does Zard have excess speed? at 10% lower does it lose any relevant speed checks with the speed EVs? Phys.Atk is juuust relevant enough to not want to drop it but it might be fine, Misty might be annoying though.
Dragon claw is necessary...
