    Is it really that simple? My back wheel has a "Formula DC-142" 12x142 (thru axle). When I went to my local bike shop they told me that it is not possible to fit an 11s cassette on it... very sad, 'cause I already had purchase everything...

    Are there 9 speed free hubs without spacers? When I took off my 9 speed cassette I didn’t manage to see any spacers, so does that mean I have to change my freehub if I want to upgrade to 11 speed?

  • @totallynotraging
    @totallynotraging 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Strangely my Shimano manual for my 11s cassette said that you should use the spacer on the freehub body. I don't use it so that the lockring has more threads to engage with

    • @EditioCastigata
      @EditioCastigata 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      11s Shimano road cassettes exists that are meant for a 8/9/10 freehub body, ex. CS-HG700-11. You'd spacer those. And MTB 11s cassettes fit on 10s freehub bodies as well.

    But what are the implications of upgrading to an 11 speed? Do i need to also get an 11 clicks shifter as well? I use a 7 speed cassette at the moment and want to upgrade to either 10 or 11 cassette. My biggest worry is will I need to also change the shifter. In Botswana, changing these two is not very far from buying a new equivalent bike in terms of costs.

      You will need to. You'll also need a new derailer

    • @WimukthiBandara
      @WimukthiBandara 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Of course you do. You'll need a new chain, chainrings and the derailiurs and shifters.

    Hey mate, I just did exactly what you did with 8 speed to 11 speed cassette (upgrading to Ultegra R8000) but for some reason my gear will not go up to the largest cog. I have adjusted the barrel adjuster and just not working. Any thoughts?

    • @Dismal232
      @Dismal232 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Your cassette and derailleur may not be compatible. Derailleur cages (The thing holding the pulleys) typically come in SS or GS sizing which accommodate different max and min sizes for cogs on the rear cassette.
      Other troubleshooting ideas could include your limit and b tension screws not being adjusted properly.

    Does it work for MTB too? I have an old MTB with Shimano 3x8 and I'd like to upgrade to 1x11, will the 11-speed cassette fit in the freehub of the old wheel which now has an 8-speed cassette? Is it just a matter of removing the spacer too?

    • @FreeToCycle
      @FreeToCycle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a spacer behind the 8 speed cassette then you can remove it to fit the 11 speed cassette!

  • @duncantemple1

    Do you need to then fit a larger chain and adjust gear cabling to make the gearing all run correctly?

    • @krazed0451
      @krazed0451 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll need at least a different shifter up top to allow for the 11 speed indexing, as well as appropriate front chain rings and chain.

  • @rafizak5989
    @rafizak5989 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Agreed with previous comment. In no way you can fit road group set cassette like 105 on old 8/9 speed free hub. There’s simply not enough thread on the lock nut. I was recently converting to grx group set and had a choice to go with 10sp 2x system or 1x with 11sp cassette SLX or XT. You can fit them as they have recess on the back allowing largest sprocket to move closer to the spokes..
    Just to say, I really enjoy watching your videos as they’re really helpful. So thank you for great content.

      The free hub is designed for 8 speed cassette so you can't fit a 11 speed cassette inside. You will have to either get a new wheel or get a 11 speed freehub

    • @esenel92

      Because the spacer is not the only thing that's done to allow more gears. The gears are closer together (and the chain will be thinner) to save some space for the extra gears.
