Video of Classic Schooner Statia Sailing Again after Being Refloated off Vancouver Island Goes Viral

The vessel had grounded on the southeast coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada in a southeasterly gale on April 20, 2023. At the time of the incident she was under the care of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, which is located nearby in Cadboro Bay. She was refloated the following day by the tug Denza Tugger on April 21, 2023 at approximately 7:40 PM. Fortunately, no one was on board the vessel during the entire time she was in distress.

There are two reasons why incidents like the schooner grounding have to be avoided at all costs in Cadboro Bay: It is part of the Victoria Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary, and it is also within the critical habitat of endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. Thus, a marine oil spill emanating from one of these totally preventable incidents could wreak havoc on marine birds, whales, and other local species.
Lastly, the prevalence of whales in general in this area, which is part of the Salish Sea, is evidenced by the fact that over the years I have posted a total of 234 videos of various types of whales, many of them off of Cadboro Bay itself, at the southeastern tip of Van Isle.
