- A short film, produced by Ronnie Hadar Productions in 1996, representing a day in the life of the Los Angeles Police Department, Air Support Division.
The Los Angeles Police Department's airborne law enforcement program began with one helicopter in 1956. Today, the Air Support Division (ASD) is the largest municipal airborne law enforcement operation in the world, and boasts the nation's largest rooftop heliport.
This is definitely super historical and rare footage! N216LA if I am not mistaken, responded to the 1997 North Hollywood Shootout too!

Interesting to see the old "Thomas Guide" being used in the cockpit. I think it's been replaced by moving map technology in the panels, now.

Did y'all know the movie blue thunder was filmed at this heliport
The Hooper Heliport is actually in construction during the filming of Blue Thunder, while this video is filmed at least circa 1995. Also during the Blue Thunder filming, ASD primary patrol helicopter is Bell 206 JetRanger, while the first operational AS350 is in 1989.

LAPD Air Support Division, absolutely fantastic. Can't tell you how many times they went above and beyond to help ground units. The night we terminated a vehicle pursuit on the 405 in WLA Division and a "shots fired" call went out an Air Ship quickly located the bad guy in the brush off the freeway through the use of FLIR. A K-9 unit responded and the bad guy went to jail with only a few dog bites. Too bad since the asshole opened fire on the cops and we, unfortunatly missed. Retired for a little over 20 years now, still have really great memories.

My uncle retired from the lapd swat team he passed away from heart failure on December 28 2022 in clovis , ca he retired from 1985 -2013 also my cousin is a lapd detective his name is detective Josh Cole me I love lapd me I am very good friends with lapd swat and detectives I have a good friend he is a Fresno county sheriff and Fresno police department Fresno fire department here Fresno.

its not southeast of downtown, its north of downtown by one way to look at it but east, or north east, opposite of south of downtown, around the same time Life On The Beat filmed with LAPD for a few years most episodes included atleast a shot or two if not a full segment of Air Support Division. That directional error really got to me, sorry! Piper Tech, aka Hooper Heliport, an incredible place, I was just the other day looking at it from satellite, counted 10 LAPD air units ready to go on the flight line!
