    Lyrics
    Lyrics
    Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain still remains
    Within the sound of, silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of the streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
    When my eyes were stabbed
By the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
    And touched the sound
    Of silence
And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
    People writing songs
    That voices never share
    And no one dared
    Disturb the sound
    Of silence
    (Of silence)
"Fools, " said I, "you do not know
    Silence, like a cancer, grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
    And echoed in the wells
    Of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "the words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls"
    And whispered in the sound
    Of silence

'Mitch-slapped' refers to the look of shock that many reactors have when they first hear Mitch sing. It's so unexpected and amazing that people are taken aback...as if slapped. Don't take it the wrong way, we've all been Mitch-slapped and we love it.

    • @heidifruchtl354

Yup, was coming here to say this. And yes, Mitch has the voice of an angel. A great idea for you is to go their beginning. That would be the sing off season 3, and include the judges comments.
They don't have a true lead singer, but Scott was thrust in the role, as he did put the group together, and has the most confidence. Plus, if you do the PTX sing off journey, you will see the original Mitch slap. That is truly baby PTX. Enjoy

Mr. Fade, Kevin Olusola, is arguably the best musician in this group of amazing musicians. As a teen he played Carnegie Hall...twice. Once on Sax and then on Cello. He was pre-med at Yale while also playing cello in their orchestra. He then spent a year in China studying and learned Mandarin. He placed runner-up in a Yo-Yo Ma competition. I believe it was during this time that he invented Cello-boxing (playing cello while beatboxing). He also sings and produces. An excellent example of what this man can do, musically, can be seen in his KOver of 'Down' or 'Sign of the Times'. Highly recommend checking those out.

The gentleman in the white jacket is Matt, he is the new bass singer who replaced Avi Kaplin. That is the only change the group has had. The term "Mitch slapped" is a play on words for "Bitch Slapped" You can not go wrong with any song by them. I would suggest their cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" "Daft Punk Medley" and their original song called "Sing"

First, this is a protest song in poetic form from the 1960's, warning people about propaganda, shallow living, and intolerance, the evil of not speaking up, and the evil of suppressing free speech. It's a good song to listen to several times, paying attention to the lyrics. Second, I suggest listening to the original by the singers Simon and Garfunkel, then listen to the other modern reinterpretation by the group Disturbed. For Disturbed, listen to the live version on Conan, not their studio version. And, yeah, they are all lead singers, they're so d@mn good.

    • @ian_bradley
      @ian_bradley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

No, No, No, not the Conan live version first but the official audio video first! It is full of David's emotions where as in the live version, although good, lacks the emotional aspects I believe he was trying to impress on the listeners and viewers as the video enhances the experience!

The rendition by Disturbed is definitely a must listen! It brought me to tears my first time hearing it. RT is spot-on with the history of the original song, but if you really pay attention to the lyrics, it is still relevant with respect to the proliferation of digital media in our lives, separating us by substituting for interpersonal communication.

Only thing I would add is that it's a warning/protest song but still upbeat as fitting the mood of that era; there was still hope for positive change. Fast forward ~50-60 years, and we have Disturbed's cover - darker, grittier, angrier.

Kevin, the beatboxer, just learned to sing since he joined the group 11 years ago. He signed on as a beat boxer. He is very musically inclined and plays world class cello, sax, and piano. In 2017, the bass singer, Avi, left the band for various reasons, and Matt (the guy in the white jacket) was signed on as the new bass. Otherwise, the members are the same. Not only have they been around a long time, so their looks have changed over the years as they have matured, but Kirstie and Mitch (the high voiced male) change their looks up a lot. 1964...is when this song was written by Paul Simon and growing up in the early 70's, their voices singing it has the perfect feel of that time. I feel truly blessed that I grew up in that era.

They are so locked in their harmonies they produced what is called "overtones". Makes notes that aren't being sung but producing overtones. And undertones.

I know it was done in the 1960s, but it never ceases to amaze me how old I must be to be surprised at how many young artists don't know the song or Simon and Garfunkel. Welcome! Scott (tall guy, lead singer) does the intro and Mitch is the singer you were thinking of. They are the originals, and started out singing in high school choir in Texas (how would you like to be directing that group?) This, brother, is the music we came of age on. Again, welcome! Give a listen to "Mary Did You Know?" and "Hallelujah".

You must listen to the song to find out what it means!
This is a Simon and Garfunkel song, from the 1960s. We had a lot of social turbulence: an unpopular war killing our sons and brothers plus race riots.
The name (Pentatonix) contains the prefix “penta” which means “five.” The Pentagon is a five-sided building. Pentatonix has five members.
This duo (Simon & Garfunkel) made MANY hit songs. Listen to the original of this song, you will like it. (Also, Disturbed does a great version. Compare all three versions.)
More S&G: Bridge Over Troubled Water, The Boxer, El Condor Pasa, America. Just find their albums and listen to every song. It is well worth it.

This classic Simon and Garfunkel song, is still relevant today, a can be applied to remaining silent to injustice and the evils of our society. Two more covers to check out is Disturbed's powerful and angry cover which comments on the idea that people ignored the gentle warning of the original song. David Draiman's powerful voice is perfect for the song. Then, there is adorable, (12y/o) Jadyn Rylee who covers the Disturbed version, which also went viral.

You should definitely read the lyrics to "The Sound of Silence" and listen to the same song by Disturbed, another group that does a great job of it. The song was written by Simon and Garfunkel in 1964 and is still being done by many different groups.

You are just the sweetest, young man. Your honest critique while listening to the mastery of vocals is both crystal clear and with the amazement of sheer joy! And, I will also tell you, it takes a keen sense of hearing and talent to make such accurate statements. I don’t know what you do for a living, but if you’re can sing, then I’d like to hear you. So my suggestion is, let me and the world hear you sing. Please.

As mentioned by others, the only member change is the bass. When the original basso profundo Avi Kaplan left the band in October 2017 the guy in the white jacket, Matt Salle, was brought on board as the bass. The members change up their looks often and some reactors get confused by that and think they are new members. The two who change their looks most often are Mitch Grassi and Kirstie Maldonado. Though Scott Hoying (tall blonde) generally opens most songs, there is really no need for a lead singer in this band. They are insanely talented individuals and are individually show cased often as was the case in this video. You have a clever mind, and I enjoyed your analogies. Hope to see you do more PTX. They are 3-time Grammy winners.
