one pentatonix rule that i’ve always loved is that they never record an arrangement that they can’t preform live. they have never broken that rule in my eyes, but you don’t have to take my word for it. check out literally any of their live performances and you won’t be disappointed.

Case in point, mind blowing? Live at Singapore, Aha. This is the later incarnation. Matt and Scott (and sometimes beat boxer perhaps- tenor Kevin) are interchangeable as bases. Kirstin is mezzo soprano and Mitch is counter tenor and they have at least a five octave range, and some like Mitch, wider. I watch the reaction videos randomly, so it's hard to know what they know or don't know (and I'm a Pentaholic from WAY. BACK and still learning stuffs). So comment or don't it's all good (though if you comment, you help their subscriptions, so as I say, IT'S ALL GOOD).

This is 100% their voices. the only videos of them that isn't purely their voices, will feature the beatboxer playing cello - and you'll see it in the video.
So if you don't see an instrument in the video it''s just their voices :)
As for their tour: they manged to do the US, Asia and Australia dates. They had to postpone the Europe ones though - they're happening in 2021.
There are many songs to recommend - they have about 9 years of material for you to catch up on. But I'm going to recommend you their newest release: "Happy Now". It was just released last week, and it's an original track. (and before you ask - yes, that one is also just their voices) :)

A great song to really see just how good they are with just their voices is their cover of "Gold"... it's recorded in a live setting, not a video synced to a studio audio, and I recommend that you first listen to the original version by Kiiara, which does use heavy electronic manipulation, sampling, and looping, and you will much better appreciate just how much they can do with just their own voices.

You should check out some of their evolution videos. They are done as single takes so when they mess up, they start it all over again. There’s no cut and paste in those.
Kevin (KO) is the beatboxer. He is a musical genius, he plays the cello, saxophone, piano, beatboxes, sings tenor, and works with drum pads and a looper on is individual stuff. You should check out his individual work, particularly Down. He was also Yale pre-med and speaks fluent Mandarin.
Scott is a baritone but also has a nice bass voice. He will take over bass notes when the bassist is singing. He is usually the lead in most of their music. Kirstie is a mezzo soprano and can sing up to the whistle register. She performed on broadway in Kinky Boots. Mitch is a tenor/counter tenor and can hit crazy high notes. He is also a chameleon and changes his looks a lot over the years. Matt is the bass with a beautiful range. Their former bass is Avi (Ah-Vee) who is a classically trained bass. He was an original member but left the group for personal reasons back in 2017. He is still close with the group and helped choose Matt as his replacement.
Also, when people say they have some music that isn’t all voice, they are referring to Kevin’s cello, their collaborations with Lindsey Sterling and her violin, or a couple live performances they did (like the Star Wars tribute or the Wicked special) where they were accompanied by a band. Kevin uses a drum pad and looper when he does his solo covers but otherwise, it’s all vocal. They don’t use sound effects or anything like that. Just crazy talent and creativity.

    PTX are crazy talented.
Mitch - mullet is a counter tenor very rare
Scott - tall guy- is baritone but he has an amazing range. He sings bass when Matt (in this video) or Avi (left in 2017) sing lead.
    Kirstie - mezzo soprano
Matt - bass. He has a very rich sounding voice.
Old videos Avi is a true basso profundo. He blows speakers with his bass.
Mitch changes his appearance a LOT.
Mitch, Kirstie and Scott have been friends since they were kids.

Ok, I am sure this has already been explained ad nauseum but all of their sounds are 100% produced by them. Yes, studio produced work will always be tweaked but they never do anything they can't reproduce when performing live. The stomping that Kevin was doing, he uses a stomp pad on occasion which amplifies the sound of the stomp but is not a canned beat. Good recovery gentleman...Pentaholics like myself are amongst the most passionate, loyal and kind community you will ever come across on the interwebs. I look forward to seeing more of your Pentatonix reactions! 😁

    • @heidi_d
      @heidi_d 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Well said! Yes, there’s minimal effects - no more than any singers would use (reverb, etc) and it’s EXTREMELY well mixed. And yes, Kevin uses a stomp pad when they perform live so it will be picked up. But no auto tune, and nothing they can’t reproduce live! (Pretty much everything you just said I just realized, haha!) but it’s TRUE!!!
Edit: the point I initially wanted to make is that YES, you can’t hear them all sing in a room together and get the exact same mixing and sound, but that’s true of all recorded music, and it’s still incredible man!

Nope, no electronics just Kevin (the beatboxer) - he has a full drumset in his mouth...
Matt (Far left) is the bass
Scott (center) is the Baritone, usually sings lead and covers bass when Matt sings lead
Mitch (center right) is a counter-tenor and has the highest range.
Kirsti is the alto and fills the rest of the middle and is a powerhouse in her own right.

I believe that Kevin (the beatboxer) uses a stomp pad within the studio for max effect and obviously the sounds are amplified with reverb. But I've seen live performances of this and it sounds exactly the same. And Scott's range is amazing and he does bass when Matt (or in the past Avi) are doing solos. You should check out his cover of I Should Tell Your Momma on You. He does bass and sings and a little percussion for the beat too.

Watch the official video of Daft Punk Medoly, then immediately watch the Private Performance of the same song. You will be amazed at just how the two are identical. You will probably have to watch the private more than once, to really believe what your eyes and ears are telling you. The video for the private, was recorded on a cell phone in front of a restroom. So the quality is not the best, but good enough that you can tell everything you hear in the official, you hear in the private performance.

Matt (white jacket) is the Bass, Kirsten is a Mezzo Soprano, Scott (tall blonde) is a Baritone who switches around from singing lead to harmony and will cover the bass line when Matt sings solo, Mitch (mullet haircut) is a tenor with a crazy range that veers into counter-tenor land and shares harmonies with Kirsten and Scott, Kevin is the beatboxer who is crazy talented and also a tenor voice. He does most of the beats with his mouth but will sometimes add foot stomps, claps, or body slaps. The others will also clap or stomp sometimes as well. No instruments or backing tracks used, just very complex coordination and layering of parts. For example layering the bass part with the beat boxing to create special effects or crossing the voices/trading who’s singing what as they trade the lead solo around.

Everything you hear is vocalization from them. At most they will add some echo or delay to the beatboxer to give it the slightly extra oomph!! But besides those two effects nothing is put through a electronic device. The beatboxer does play cello in a few of their songs, but no other instruments are used with the exception of when special guest Lindsey Stirling with her violin joins them. Avi Kaplan their former bass who was in the Daft Punk video, was able to do Mongolian throat singing which allowed him to produce two notes at the same time which gave them a very electronic sound, but no effect added, just his voice.
Scott is the lead baritone who will take over the bass part when Matt(far left) their bass takes lead, Mitch is the high tenor, Kirstie is the mezzo soprano, and the beatboxer/vocal percussionist/tenor/cello player is Kevin, better known as K.O. .
Hope this helps you both out a little bit more. Also they did win a television signing contest called The Sing Off which was a all a'capella show where it is purely vocals no instrument and no electronic effects were allowed.

I was a teenager when Simon and Garfunkel released this song and I have heard soooo many covers of it since then and this one is by far the best I've ever heard! Pentatonix music is so addicting when you really listen to everything they do with a song. So many music reactors now days are so focused on trying to pick out if a singer used autotune or whatever that they forget to listen to the music itself. Usually the artist that relies on "aides" in their singing will be exposed if they ever do live concerts. Pentatonix live sounds just about as good as they do in their videos taking into account of course the venue they perform in. Football stadiums will always sound a lot different than a concert hall. Thank you for your reaction and hopefully you will enjoy this groups music if you choose to continue reacting to them. New sub here.

The tall blond guy is Scott (baritone), smaller guy with the mullet (this time.. he always looks different) is Mitch, the 3rd guy is Matt (bass) and is the only member change from Avi in 2017, the girl is Kirstin, and the beatboxer is Kevin who also is multi-talented.

Left to right on your screen: 1. Matt (Bass, the only member not an "original"), 2. Kirstin (mezzo-soprano), Scott (Baritone), Mitch (Tenor), Kevin (Beatboxer, and Tenor). If Matt (or in the earlier years the Bass was Avi Kaplan) is singing and you hear bass notes at the same time then it is Scott taking that roll. All of them have wicked ranges. Yes, Kevin is making all those percussive noises and such, it is not a machine. If you find yourself asking, "Is that Mitch?" the answer is always, "Yes, it is." Mitch lost some weight over the years and seems to never look the same (and we love him for this). What stays the same with Mitch is that clear tenor voice of his. Just for your f.y.i., have fun being amazed when you see what all these five wonderful humans can do.

I think their Bohemian Rhapsody will blow your mind - and Say Something is a good example of one of their tracks with an instrument (Kevin plays cello while he beatboxes because, Kevin things). And I was SO lucky to see them live this year here in Australia, *just* pre Rona. 2020’s last gift, lol

Matt on the far left is the bass, ( he replaced Avi the original Bass almost two years ago.
    Kirsten is the mezzo soprano
    Scott is the baritone
Kevin on the far right is the beatboxer, he's also an award-winning cellist. He also sings tenor. You might want to check him out. He has his own videos on his own TH-cam channel KO. He is a genius who can play multiple instruments.
They are a multi Platinum and Grammy award-winning acapella group. While they do use Electronics to amplify their voices they do not use them as a part of the music that they produce. Every sound they produce is voice and human body generated.

Matt, the one in the white jacket is their bass, while the lead in this song the tall blond, Scott, that started the song, can drop down and cover the bass, while Matt is singing lead. They all can sing over many octaves, and one second they may be singing lead, and a second later they are singing bell notes. Kevin the guy all the way to the right is the Beat Boxer (vocal percussionist) is a renowned beat boxer, he has played his cello in carnagie hall, and his performance got a rave rebiew from Yoyo Ma. All of them have released their own solo stuff. Check out Kevin's "Down (Marian Hill KOver) - Kevin Olusola. You will see what a talent he is. Up until 1017, there was a different bass, Avi. who left the group on a friendly bases, his mother was sick and he wanted to be near her, and not travel so much. I think you two need to check out Avi's Change on the Rise, on of his solo pieces. It will fit your style and you will be amazed...

First time watching and I've subscribed, purely because of your intro and the realness of your reaction. Thanks, guys. I'm an Aussie and I took my two kids to the PTX concert just gone, and I can tell you they sound the same on stage. I've followed PTX from their 'Sing-off' days. They have grown up & developed as artists. As a bonus, at their meet and greets, they're pretty cool. I hope you enjoy any other PTX songs you listen to. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. Cheers guys. PS: Kevin Olusola (K.O) really is that incredible, and in-studio I believe he uses something called a 'stomp board'. If you check out some of their live performances, you will really get to see how incredibly talented these guys are.

To answer one of your questions! :)
In this video you have Matt (white jacket) as bass. Scott (long trench) baritone. Kirstin mezzo soprano. Mitch (black button down) high tenor. Kevin beatboxer/cellist/tenor.
The only songs they use things that aren't vocal you will see an instrument in. Typically Kevin's cello beyoncé. Great examples are Shallow and Say Something.
If you want an awesome live example of they can do anything from Popspring 2016 or their cover of Kiara's Gold are great places to start.
I am sure someone will eventually mention that all members have solo acts outside of Pentatonix that are more mainstream pop music save for Avi who is no longer in the group who does folk type solo music now.
All members are amazing in their own right!
    Hope you guys enjoy!
