This is an quick and easy guide how to enable native 4K all the time on your Sony Xperia XZ Premium

Change Resolution and DPI (back to default)
- Type "adb shell"
- Type "wm size 1080×1920"
- Type "wm density 403"
Why use a computer? Why not just use a terminal program on the phone?

Haven't read all comments, so this could already have been said, but for the adb driver for the phone to install you may have to turn on tethering the first time. Also, full 4K has issues with the in call dialer crashing (and not being able to answer or hang up calls). Running at 1890x3360, 706dpi is completely stable. Several other apps are more stable with this setting as well. And, it still jumps to full 4K in the designated apps, though the change is far more subtle than when it is running the standard 1080.
At this setting of 3360, the screen still jumps to 4k when prompted?
daniel ramirez Yes. The apps that Sony has designated will still switch to full 4k mode, but everything else will be running at the set resolution. I have run at this res for 2 weeks now and only a few apps have some minor issues, often not big enough to be worth lowering the res. Games are mixed with some not loading and others running fine (Gameloft and Madfinger games have been excellent so far). Gonna test 1440p to see if compatibility increases with certain games/applications. Software really hasn't been made with greater than 1440p in mind so it could just be that.

Are reviews really saying it's defaulted to run at 4k all the time?! Sad. Great tutorial, professional enough for me. Do you get the 4k option in TH-cam for 4k videos?
Damir Franc That's awesome! I had to use command line to enable 3rd party launchers on the Chinese version of the OPPO R9s. Sucks these basic options aren't enabled by the manufacturer.
Grant S you get TH-cam 4k, Netflix 4k out of the box, even without this trick
The XZ Premium has the 4k option on youtube even without forcing the 4k output, but not the Z5 Premium.
I did this trick with z5 premium, I am only getting 1440p video's on youtube though
Since a couple of software updates the screen is now always at 4K.
Damir thanks! I have did it on my phone and seriously man, it is absurdly super good. I don't think I can return to a phone with resolution lower than 4K anymore.

Usman Tariq actually not at all. This time Sony really nails the battery life. People assumed that higher resolution will drain the battery much more quickly but an assumption is just an assumption and they're wrong.
Naim Noor I gotta say man, it's a great device and with this it looks amazing. Unfortunately it would crash my phone dialer regardless if I replaced it with another 1 or not. I factory reset. Tried it again and same issue. So, I must pass but if it doesn't effect yours.. Man go for it!
Edwin Torres that's a recurring issue everybody is experiencing. you can install 3rd party dialer app or find previous version of google phone apk from xda dev
Naim Noor is that what you did? Cause I installed a 3rd party app and still.. When I called out, once it rang i got an error message. I didn't try installing the older Xperia phone app. Which did you do?
Did it. Text is sharper, however thats the only advantage, and you have to really lean in to see the difference. Other than that there are a few scaling bugs and gaming performance issues. Battery has taken a 15% hit and there are some frame drops while scrolling fast. Considering that the display is adaptive and it switches to 4K resolution whenever an image/video of that resolution is detected (such as photos or videos in youtube/amazon/etc) AND the fact that like the Z5 premium, it upscales sub 4K videos to 4K in youtube (not sure about netflix, amazon, hbo go, etc), i find very little justification to get marginally clearer text at the expense of battery, performance (especially 3d) and some annoying scaling bugs throughout the UI.

I've tried it on my Z5 Premium, and yeah it was noticeable sharper than before and it looked just awesome. Social apps, mail apps and browsing on chrome looked great, however some native sony apps did not support 4k resolution so I had to switch back to 1080p. btw youtube was giving me the 1440p option.

Yes it works. Phone dialer app crashes, but you can still make and receive phone calls. I noticed minor performance issues, and the battery life is not as good as on full hd resolution. Try it for your self. If you don't like it just go back to native 1080p resolution.
Well the last Sony update forced 4K at all times and yes the text is clearer, but I reverted back to 1080p as my battery life has been terrible since and this is something I need more than the quality of the text. But either way just update your phone and you don't have to go through all the hassle which is in this video. Oh by the way his DPI are still for the FULL HD, with the official update it shows 803 DPI -) Which in my opinion is an overkill for such a small screen, but nice to have for pics and videos.

Great great video. Thanks for clearing that up. One of the main reasons i skiped the Z5 premium. The XZ premium however, will be my next smartphone.
For those who cant find your device, you have to download your phone´s driver first, then install it with the adb installer and then it will work.

Usman Tariq Yea it did... And yes it does look great. But.... Now I have bugs. If I power down and start it back up it gets small and yes it goes back to normal. Than if I get a phone call, I gotta swipe like 3 times and than upon hanging up in my notifications it shows I'm still on the phone. Its happened twice so far. I can easily just clear it but still. I am willing to deal with the little buggy stuff cause man, watching movies and stuff it looks great. The best. So it's up to you if you want a smooth running phone but not 4k all the time. Or a 4k permanent display with a hick up here and there. #honest/critic

My XZP showed me in AIDA64 that it had 2160×3840 Display without that any modification .!

I didn't try this yet but when I go to Aida64 it says that my resolution is 4k, I don't understand...
It shows max supported screen resolution in Aida. And the most recent Sony upgrades force 4K at all times which ruins the battery. I came here to put it back to 1080p, see the top comment.

I just changed my Z5 premium to 4k and the text is really nice and sharp now.
Only problem is that it makes the CPU quite warm and probably ruins the battery life
You should include a tutorial to return the resolution back to the original 1920x1080, just in case someone wants to send it in for warranty. Kinda neat but not really worth it unless your using it for VR, text is sharper but only every so slighty but hey I guess if you buy a 4K smartphone then why not use it right?

hey how to install the thing on computer which we need to use to enable 4k? i mean the thing where u write adb devices etc?
can you find a way to make the super slow motion video record longer than 0.2 seconds.

Tried a third party phone app didn't work. Went to QHD (1440p), phone works fine although seems to be some sizing issues with launcher. Using 545 density which seems best from what I've tried.

If understand this correctly: if my dialer crashes I don´t have to change the dialer, but the launcher from Xperia Home to some other launcher (Nova Launcher, Nougat Launcher...) and I should be set?
i tested for a week, i noticed that the dialer crashes every time, so it becomes hard to make a call. Battery drain is not that much evident.
The worst thing i noticed is the warming of the phone, it becomes very hot, i think due the gpu load
Tried on XZ2 Premium on factory updated Android-10 unfortunately while it bumps the resolution up exactly how I want it, the digitiser only functions for a ¼ of the screen
Anyway to resolve this? Or maybe load older version of Android to make it not do that? ideally if there are commands to scale the digitiser up that would be swell, also worth noting is AIDA64 reports 4K for the XZ2 Premium regardless of if you're using commands or checking as is on A-10

Nice experiment but with Oreo 8.0.0 the Xperia Dialer crashes everytime. I also tried 3rd party dialers and they crash everytime also. So as soon as someone calls you, you can't take a call, same when I try to call, as soon as connection is established the dialer crashes and I can still hear person talking but I am unable to do anything else including ending the call is also impossible.

I just purchased xz premium from amazon and watching HDR amazon prime.Unfortunately it all displays as 1080p on my phone.Any ideas how I change this to 4k display, I presumed wrongly it was automatic.
@@talkandplay You need to find 4K channel on the Amazon, it won't show 4K if you're in full HD section, it's not automatic on AMAZON. I have the same issue on my 4K TV -)

you should reboot first after doing wm command. there are some element that might not get refreshed on the display. Plus what happened when you do screenshot? does the file have 3840x2160 resolution?

rhe latest update , including V8.0 Oreo sets the screen resolution to 4k, so no need for this procedure
There is no way it doesn't have impact on battery life.... The GPU utilization is always above 50% check it out yourself... the hiccups happen when you touch the 100% GPU utilization.
I had the Z5P and now the XZP... for me changing the dpi to 300 or 280 is much cleaner and gives you same result. One big bonus is that you get some apps to render in desktop version like chrome and viber etc...

no, here the dpi is done additional, the resolution change is the main thing, just chaning the dpi won't affect the resolution at all
