I still think Ken's redesign impacted and surprised me more comparing to cammy's or Ryu's since their story is pretty much over and their redesigns were kinda obvious where as for Ken's,we've all got used to see him all confident and smiling while his designs always compliments his blazing personality really well and we've all expected him to look all the same and happy on this entry. and yet to see him all depressed, moody, angry while wearing a rather rugged messy clothes is just really felt out of character of him because this is the first time seeing a character like him gotten such a redesign excluding violent ken of course and later you soon understood why because of the mess he's thrown upon and it's heart warming to know that as WE the player get to interact with him in world tour soon realize the fire is still there and he's still the ken we all know and love and he's just in a tough spot and needs help and as a HUGE Ken fan,It feels really nice knowing it's US doing the help and not ryu.
Cammy’s redesign’s actually all coincide with her story. Also I love that the new cammy design uses things like the jacket tassels to keep her original silhouette
Sonic is always the first character I think of when it comes to character redesigns. But I'm actually glad that you talked about these characters here because they're not ones I really think about when it comes to character redesigns.
Really? Sonic has looked near identicl since his debut. Sure there is Modern Snic, changing his eyes and his shoes, and making him taller overall, but.... That's it. Someone who's only seen Modern Sonic can look at Classic and confidently say that's Sonic.
@@pacomatic9833unfortunately Sega doesn’t see it that way and did some weird retcon that doesn’t make sense. They made it out to be classic Sonic is a different character from another dimension and that is just wrong and retarded. They need to understand the current Sonic with green eyes is not a different character, it is a redesign. There is no classic Sonic and there is no modern Sonic, it’s just only Sonic. Sega just doesn’t understand that a different design doesn’t make Sonic a different character. All of that just because they are pandering to brain dead fans that still complain about green eyes.
My most favorite redesign situations are in the Guilty Gear games, as they have a pretty nice way to obviously show a character"s growth or change like Ky getting his hair short or May putting on a hoodie Except Sol, it seems like he barely ever changes despite years passing
Fighting game franchises are very common when it comes to redesigning their characters over the years. It shows that the game and their characters have been evolved.
My favorite Cammy design is the Alpha Design and because it was used in the Marvel Vs Capcom, however I don’t mind the original Green Leotard, her SF6 is even better I would argue, I love the blue jacket with the UK Flag, the Midriff and I’m a big fan of Yoga Pants too🇬🇧
I still find the turtleneck leotard with sewed-in necktie or ribbon to be one of the most unusual costume designs i've ever seen. Cammy pulls it off, though. And i've never considered the school uniform angle either, so that's cool to learn. Dee Jay probably got the most significant redesign of all characters, though. Or perhaps some would say most significant design, period-- considering how minimal his original look is. (which i honestly do like).
Yeah, I really like Dee Jay's new design. He looks like he's just chilling and enjoying life! I never really cared for his old design honestly, like you said it was a bit too minimal for my liking.
I honestly like how, for the first time since SFIII, SF6 is actually deciding to visually age up its characters and make them feel like more of a part of the modern world.
Yeah, as much as I understand these new designs not being as "iconic" as the old ones it does breathe new life into the fighters and make them look more like people and less like cartoons. And yes I know a lot of them are still weird plus Blanca exists, but it's still by far the most grounded a roster has looked in my opinion.
Crash Bandicoot is the first character I think of when it comes to REDESIGNS. If we put aside his in-game look in the PS1 Trilogy (that differs with 1st to his 2nd & 3rd game look), there was a clear design that continued to Crash Team Racing and Crash Bash to Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex and Crash Nitro Kart. In all these games Crash Bandicoot was in his "original" design on all boxarts and adds. Same goes for his Game Boy Advance adventure titles. But with Crash Twinsanity, here is what we see some slight changes to him and the other characters. And with Crash Tag-Team Racing, we saw him getting further changed. Not so much that it is "way-off", but it is clear with the other characters more that they have walked away from there original designs. BUT as we all know, with the sift-reboot Crash of the Titans here we saw the absolute major changes. There was near only by name it was Crash Bandicoot we saw. Now he have wild hairstyle, a flattened face, wider eyes that gives impression of that he is on some illegal substances, is covererd in gang-like tattoes and to add he is now stupid and talking gibberish. His enemies like Tony Tiger is completely at evrey point re-made so he is no longer a hulking aggresive tiger mutant, but instead is a calm human-tiger like character wearing a green overalls with a matching green cap and speaks like boxer Mike Tyson (WT¤). Aku-Aku is now wider, looks like he have no clue all the time and of some reason have an modern-african dialect thrown in there (!). Same goes for the sequel. The games where not bad, but they felt nothing like Crash Bandicoot..... And not until Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy we get back after all these years the ORIGINAL design, but with updated colors and lightning textures. Here is what Crash & Co should always look like. Loved it and it is continued to be used in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled = all perfect looking. But here we are now. "Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time" and its party follow up "Crash Team Rumble" and they gave them a soft remade design (again) and why I wonder? Why can't they leave Crash Bandicoot alone and let him have his original design? I mean after barely 1,5 year they took away his comeback original look and re-made it. Why? There is no official reason behind it all.
Sonic had a major glow-up with his redesign, and i really prefer Yuji Uekawa's sleek exaggerated graffiti-esque designs over the classic designs... Though Naoto Oshima did a great job too.
I grew up with Uekawa Sonic, so I definitely have an attachment to that one, but there's something so iconic and timeless about the original Ohshima look!
Exactly what im saying, both are absolute classics, i personally just prefer the Uekawa look more, since thats what i also grew up with. Great video, too!
No mention that cammy's jacket recreates her classic silhouette by having the loose straps dangling in the wind mimicking her old hair from a silhouette perspective.
I always liked how Terry Bogard look changed in Mark of the Wolves with that green bomber jacket, shorter hair and shoes instead of sneakers. Though technically he already had some design changes between his debut game, Fatal Fury 2 and 3, though his FF2 look is his more iconic one and the one that was kept in his all his KoF appearances until 2003 when SNK switched to his MoW look, only to come back to his FF2 design in KOF XII
My favorite redesign was Samus in Metroid Prime 2&3 to me that's her definitive look, imo they perfected the iconic Varia Suit in those games, it even got several figurines and statues, I always look forward to how they redesign her suits in new games.
I think Amy Rose and Dr. Eggman would be interesting to talk about. Technically, every main Sonic character got a redesign at some point, but those two are the most drastic.
I thought for sure Sonic was gonna be brought up in this video, seems like he had one of the bigger impacting redesigns in terms of video game characters
4:59 Yeah I always choose that outfit in Smash Bros for cloud. Also right after you said that when the ad showed up It was actually for final fantasy 7. Such perfect timing
Do you think Ryu's hair got darker and shorter over the course of the SF timeline because it got dirtier and he lost hair over time? After all, SFI Ryu just got out of training and basically just wandered the world looking for fights, and SFII Ryu entered a worldwide tournament. It ultimately culminated in his SFVI design where his facial hair significantly grew since SFIII.
I just love that the tassels are there in cammy's jacket which basically are the long braids she had before just subtly kept in here to still make her seem familiar and you still recognize her as "cammy" even though her entire outfit is basically the opposite of what she had before
Virtua Fighter is a weird case as they’ve remained the same mostly except for minor details in character design. Kage Maru looks the same. This is in contrast to Tekken where the characters have had newer designs[while their retro designs sometimes are retained as extra outfits]. And even Dead or Alive have changed or altered some characters’ designs[for better or worse in some cases].
Really, most of the Links are completely different characters. They are just all named Link. It's like if Final Fantasy decided to start calling all their protagonists Cloud from now on.
As someone soon to finishing a Bachelor's in Animation (and who specializes in character design), it is genuinely one of my favorite character designs of all time. It's just unfortunate how sexualized she often was (which wasn't necessarily the fault of the design itself, just how she was framed in media and the reasoning behind it - aka male gaze).
Mario , Ryu , Cammy and Cloud have amazing designs. I also love the redesigns but for Street Fighter Ryu and Cammy I love the classic designs more. Cool video. ^_^
I'd love to see something on some of the guilty gear characters, Ky, May and Bridget all come to mind as characters who have had some pretty great redesigns
I grew up with that design so it's my fave too. The show is horrible, but it's a great design, AND one that actually won over 3 other proposed redesigns in a poll. So, really, it's the fans fault for wanting it so much. I think its first appearance wasnt even Ghostly Adventures - iirc it was Pac-Man Party for 3DS
I’m pretty sure the FAMICOM port of Mario Bros has Mario without gloves because of technical limitations-not being able to display enough colors-so his hands had to be the same color as his skin
Cammy is now more bri'ish and streety and less military. She's become a roadman (I don't play streetfighter i just like to analyze designs) Cloud's original design is my favorite because graphical "realism" ruined his hair but I do like the coat-ish part of the other smash bros outfit from that movie. (I haven't played final fantasy, Cloud's design is the only thing I really know anything about) Mario's outfit color doesn't even really matter because the shape is recognizable enough
My favorite is his Smash Ultimate look. He's so expressive and has the same cute but tough energy as Tinkaton. Fitting for someone who went from a goofy comedic villain to more anti-hero. Plus, it solves the blue stomach vs yellow stomach inconsistency from the Kirby games by having him wear a yellow kimono-like top over a blue stomach.
I think redesigns can be great if done well, otherwise the character’s look will end up being like the fifa games, with each iteration the same, apart from better graphics.
The Vincent rumor is untrue, Cloud was always intended to be in Kingdom Hearts. He uses Vincent's design to represent that he is on the side of darkness. This was explained in the Ultimania.
