I work as an architect and can very much relate to this content. Through the years, I have learned to come to a meeting "empty" and really listen to the client. I trust my skill and instinct. This is how the designer and client can understand each other and provide solutions. Great job articulating this essential skill.
Gosh. That speech is really lifechanging. I adore the way Ben explains the feelings of small business owners, cause i have been there myself before starting a design. I found out a lot about mentality of "only physical work matters" in which i believed myself, because my parents worked sooooo hard physically and emothionally to give me the oportunity of having what i have. It would be meaningless without my hard work too. But still, sometimes i even feel guilty thinking that i work not as hard as them. Even though they did this because they wished a better life for me. (Sorry about the typos if a have some, english is not my native language)

Such good advice. I do want to say, for me, during the money section. I read something once that said money is not emotional/has no emotion. Just like Chris said it is a tool. I honestly never grew up with that mentality, & being able to separate the emotion & view it as a tool is a huge eye-opener & takes time. I think that maybe for some, that is something that is from how we grew up? Or maybe that's just my experience. These videos are amazing & I love Ben's humble nature. I feel like I get where he's coming from on a lot of these videos. Thank you guys for your time & knowledge!
I realize this was done two, nearly going on three years ago and I'm late to the party, but what a raw and powerful conversation that I just watched. I am so glad you guys did this on camera while Ben was little over 6 months into being here, and seeing him grow and gain wisdom about the differences between clients who disconnect between large sums of money and who value taking big risks versus those who are so deeply connected to their money being its far more personal and most likely literally their money out of their pocket and what they are and are not willing to embark on. Thank you, guys. Great episode.

Honestly, I have learnt so much with this channel and with you Chris. I know I learnt more on here than the 3 years of my design degree. So thank you. Now specifically relating to this video, I have a question although I'm not entirely sure how to word it. Basically, I've grown up with a lot of limiting beliefs around money, self-worth and confidence in my work. With that attached a lot of "hate" towards big companies, millionaires, thinking all rich people are evil sort of jam. This really prevents me from pushing myself to work with bigger clients because I don't ever want to be an enabler of some ill-intentioned marketing scheme or work with someone that's contributing to things that I believe are harming the people and the planet. So I find myself in this situation that I feel stuck because working with smaller businesses is a nightmare but at least I feel like I'm not screwing anyone over. Is this all in my head? No need to reply, I know it's a bit long-winded and complicated I just needed to vent.
Thank you Chris and Ben! I have to say in the short amount of time since I discovered your channel, I have flipped my life. I had many doubts pursuing this career and one day, I found your videos and I've tried to watch at least one video a day, keep up with live streams. People around me took notice, and I hadn't realised how much more confident in myself I had become. I'm definitely looking to become a sustaining member this month! Your contents are truly a bargain! Chris Do is almost the “Ghandi” of running a design business. It’s not really about the products or services with him, but the people. Just watching him makes me feel at ease. Reassurance and understanding people goes a long way. Chris Do does it best.

Asking one question at the time, validating one's words, being patient and addressing thoughtfully that client's concerns gave a lot of satisfaction to him and solved the problems and his fear almost immediately. I'm a graphic designer students and I feel like you learn better from outside of the university degree (watching YT, reading on your own, trying weird things, testing, failing, starting over....) than from the actual degree. Just complementing enormously my education in a way I can't even explain. Also a little note, I love your spiritual approach mixing it up with design.

Zak, why not purchase a block of time with one of them. I bought an hour of Ben's time and it was some of the best money I've invested. I still have a long way to go, so take it for what it's worth. There is so much information given on this channel, so much so that I saw a mountain in front of me, or perhaps a thick haze. After talking to Ben, I was given a crystal clear path up that mountain, through the thick haze. Nearly everything Ben told me I recalled from this channel's videos. But after our conversation, I now have a plan written down, and I feel very good about my chances. I recommend you buy a block of their time, because you can talk to them, and I'm here to say, it's worth it.
"Small business owners who think small aren't real business people" - This resonated with me in a big way. "Calculated Risk for a Calculated Gain". Historically, I've been very resistant to take risk in my own business to move forward and grow. It's a difficult mindset to break.
Just re-watching these videos. Chris talking about not stressing about being the best at what your clients / colleagues do, it reminded me of something a fellow alumni at my college once said at an alumni-lecture we both were speaking at. This guy was running a small film production company at the time. He said that micromanaging everything will only slow down the production and cause stress for both you and the ones around you. Sometimes you need to trust that the cameraman knows how to use the camera. After all, that is what you pay him for.

Another great video with helpful tips leaving the viewer with plenty to think about. Honestly, you guys provide a great service to the creative industries. I was a bit confused at first as to who you were talking about in terms of the client (small business) vs. the person providing the service (designer) at the 33min mark and the definition of what constitutes a real business.
I watched it a third time and think I had my wires crossed. I realize now that when you're talking (around 33min in) small business owners who think to small and are risk adverse not being real businesses that you're talking about the clients/potential clients not the person providing the service (like a designer). Still not totally keen on the use of hobbyist to describe these people, but can even more see the point now. PS- edited my first response so it's less jerky as I don't want to distract from the good work you guys are doing on account of my misunderstanding.

I realize now that when you're talking (around 33min in) small business owners who think to small and are risk adverse not being real businesses that you're talking about the clients/potential clients not the person providing the service (like a designer). Still not totally keen on the use of hobbyist to describe these people, but can even more see the point now. PS- edited my first response so it's less jerky as I don't want to distract from the good work you guys are doing on account of my misunderstanding.
