Yep, I feel your pain. Same for a used E-class I was very tempted by recently. No space in the boot for a space-saver spare so I told the salesman 'no thanks' and walked away to look at Volvos.
It had been years since I had a flat, but this summer I got a cut in a tire which was not repairable. It was a Friday evening and I was basically in the middle of nowhere on a rural highway, 200 miles from home. Fortunately I had checked the air in my donut spare recently so I drove slowly (under 50 mph) home. If I had not had that spare tire then a tow truck or any other option would have been extremely expensive and time-consuming given where I was and the fact that it was Friday after business hours.
Car manufacturers ARE'NT stopping giving spare wheels because they're heavy and they want to make the car more efficient. Simple truth is that they save money by not providing one whilst still charging the prices of when they did. It's just profit chasing, simple as that. 🤷♂️🤦♂️
I’m a disabled driver, I came back to my Nissan in the pouring rain I discovered a flat: I simply got out the tyre sealant, blew it up and went home. Believe me, far less trouble than attempting to change a tyre in the piddling rain, especially being disabled.
Its not practical for everyone but i always keep an air pump in my car and plug kit so i can pump the tire back up till i can get somewhere safe to fix it
My daughter bought a Kia Soul and then she realized it didn't have a jack or spare. I ordered a doughnut tire on amazon and bought her a jack and wrench at a U-pull junk yard. Thank goodness a month later she had a flat in the middle of nowhere and I had showed her how to change it.
My biggest issue is that they also took away the space for the spare without increasing trunk space at all. I would happily buy my own donut spare of full size spare, but it won't fit.
I completely agree. A few weeks ago I was about to buy a used car then found out that even if I bought a space-saver spare myself, it wouldn't fit in the boot recess provided! Had to walk away from that sale purely because of that issue - thanks Mercedes!
If you're on your automotive game, just pick up a spare that fits at a local junkyard. Try it for fit to make sure. If you have space, a full-size spare is best. Then when you have a flat you can run it however long you have to until you can fix/ replace the tire.
So car manufacturers might give you an air pump instead. How does THAT make sense? If a tire going flat and doesn't hold air, how's an air pump supposed to help?
Mine was losing it slowly. Every few days I had to pump it. I'd taken it in 3x before they finally found the issue. Kind of crazy. But yeah, now I have a pump in my emergency kit. I have had a large puncture, and in that case 100% useless. Needs repair or replace. I have an older SUV so I still have a spare full size tire, thankfully. Also, got CAA. My friend had a similar slow leak issue amd we had to pump every hour to get home 3 hours away. But we did.
To be fair, I had a thick needle like object puncture my tire and after inflating it, I was able to drive a little further to the closest tire repair shop. Obviously not a substitute for a spare tire, but it could help in some situations.
Was going to buy a mustang a few years ago. I always check out the spare. It had no spare. I even told the sales person that it was a stupid idea and walked away from it. I replaced the space saver tyre in my wife’s car with a full grown one, best thing I ever done
Here in the UK, it’s the same story, and if you’ve had to use one of these aerosol cans, the tyre has to be replaced. You also get three penalty points for a worn tyre, and lose your licence if you reach twelve - you get them for other things, too.
I just bring a full size wheel with me, spare tires cannot go very far or very fast. if you are driving just slightly out side the city in the prairies you'd be hard pressed to find a tire shop, or, one that's open.
I just keep driving my 23 year old Nissan Sunny with it's full size spare hidden in the trunk, underneath the mat. I also carry a 12 volt inflator pump, just in case the spare is low on air. Gives so much more peace of mind 😅
Worst idea especially in the beginning of winter when most Flats occur. you get towed to the tire shop and you have to wait a day or 2 just for them to get to your car close the tire shop so backed up
They're NOT trying to make them lighter so they're more efficient, they're just charging the same for the car and charging you extra for stuff that was always standard. It's just greedy car manufacturers ripping off their customers even more than before.
If you use a can of sealant on your tire, it will damage the sensor for the Tire Pressure Monitor. It will put a sealant coating inside of the wheel which will have to be cleaned out with solvents. Expensive! Best to have a tire pump and a flat tire repair kit in your car. Pull out the nail or tack that went in to the tire, and insert the patch-string with the provided tools in the repair kit. Then re-inflate the tire with the pump. If you had nitrogen filled tires, you can go back to the garage that has the nitrogen machine and they can let out the air and fill the tire back with nitrogen.
It won’t be long before such things as; _steering wheel, seatbelts and windows_ … will be extra “options” that you’ll have to buy when you’re shopping for a new car.
2016 mustang, no spare. Came with a 12 volt compressor with a cartridge of fix a flat built into the pump. Had to clean all that crap out of the tire when I got it fixed.
I remember when I rented a 2024 Toyota Prius 2 months ago. I had a flat tire in Los Angeles. The car came with a fix a flat kit along with an air compressor.
My car came with no spare at all so I've just spent around £140 for another wheel, a new tyre for it and of course a jack and wrench as those aren't supplied either. Now my car boot is full before I consider luggage, that has to go on the back seat.
Breakers yard for the wheel, a universal scissor jack and a 4 way wheel brace, mine I carry a length of pipe to put over the arm of the brace for leverage,( it's undefeated with tight wheel nut removal) 😊 the brace, ext bar and jack you can keep and take car to car.
Before purchasing our 7 passenger SUV that was one thing I opened the trunck for. Wife was surprised that, that was very important to me. Yes it should be a standard across all manufacturers.
that's been happening for decades. they don't lower the price of a car without a spare. I remember when all new cars came with a big spare. always keep a can of flat fix with you, and an air pump. I had a flat on my 93 caddy this summer. the spare had never been used. I had to pump it up with my electric air pump and got home. my daddy always said. Always have a backup.
If your spare is that old, it's likely to fall apart after a few miles. The molecular structure breaks down and it becomes weak. I learned that from experience. And mine was only 17 years old.
It’s just cost cutting. It was a dealer option when I bought my car. Had to pay extra for them to swap out the tire inflator kit under the trunk floor for a real spare.
Yeah I don't think it has anything to do with gas. I was surprised it didn't have one. There's an air pump. Somebody didn't think that through and now there's no spot for a spare if I buy one either.
My daughter bought a Kia Soul that came without a spare tire. I was able to purchase her one from the Kia dealership, and there was a spot in a well to store it.
Recently bought a 2014 prius plug-in. It doesn't have room to fit a spare 'cause of the bigger battery it has compared to the standard prius non plug-in (which does come with a spare). Instead it comes with a tire inflator and tire sealant that's since expired. Since I work from home, I ended up buying a spare that I leave in the garage in case my wife gets a flat tire to/from work or wherever.
This summer while driving from High Level to Edmonton, an 8 hour drive, had a flat south of Slave Lake. Luckily my wife's 2021 Buick Enclave had a spare donut and got me to Edmonton, still at highway speed.
My work bought dodge promaster citys that didnt come with spare tire or equipment. When we tried to get the spare tire holders that go under the back end they were on back order for months. Then the jacks were three months to get. Unbelivable!!!
I've got a 2016 vehicle. It did not come with a spare tire. If I do install one, it'll be a donut. Where do you put the full size flat tire? Ridiculous!
To save the company a ton of money. I once had a tire going flat on my 2014 Hyundai Elantra. I got out the inflater kit and correctly connected it and the damn thing would not run. I had just removed it from its bubble wrap packaging. So fortunately, it was on a weekday during business hours, so I quickly made it to a tire store. When I got home, I went online and ordered a spare tire kit. Included was a donut spare tire, jack and tire tool and the bolt to secure it to the floor in the tire well.
I have a 2014 Acura ILX. I replaced the doughnut spare with a full size steel wheel and it doesn't affect my gas millage. I still average 30mpg. I actually did get a flat earlier this year and use said spare tire for over a week and had zero issues.
I'll be the contrarian. Tires are MUCH more robust today than they were 50 years ago. Most tires can take a nail and still hold air - the TPMS will let the driver know that the pressure is low giving them time to drive to a garage or tire shop to have the tire fixed or replaced. The reality is that 98% of car drivers today would not even know how to remove the flat tire and replace it with a spare so they would be calling for help anyway. Although this used to be a BIG DEAL (100 years ago, cars used to carry 2 spare wheels/tires!), it has now become more of an edge case, something that most drivers will encounter only once every 5 or 10 years. Not worth it to provide a full-size spare tire, or even a mini-spare anymore.
I disagree. Without at least a donut spare, this summer I would have been stranded 200 miles from home on a remote rural highway where I was probably 100 miles from the nearest tire shop. And it was Friday evening when a tire shop might not be open until Monday. Of course, the donut spare is not designed to drive 200 miles but I didn't have a choice. Pissed me off that the dead real tire would not fit in the compartment where the donut is stored. If I had had a bunch of luggage I don't know where they think I could have put the real tire that was flat. If a car at least has a spare that fits, then any tow truck driver or halfway mechanical person can swap on the spare. Without a spare, but with a bad flat, you have no choice but to get towed somewhere and wait for business hours.
Not having a spare tyre only increases the risk of accidents happening. Especially, if you have broken down on the side of a motorway. It should be a law to make manufacturers provide spare tyres. Unless car manufacturers can invent James Bond technology where the tyre automatically re- inflates after a puncture. Any one remembers Tomorrow Never Dies?
If they only knew how many times I've had a flat tire, including blowouts on the highway. I will NEVER buy a car that doesn't come with a spare tire. Yes, I'm looking at you, 2023-2025 Honda CRV Hybrid!
If my car doesn't come with a spare....I'm buying my own. I got a flat at midnight in a parking garage. It was put on my spare while wearing a suit, or wait 2 hours for CAA. Thank you spare tire. It was on before the CAA truck hit the road.
It's a cost saving move. My brother in law and I bought our Acura MDX around the same time. I got the top of the line and I have a spare in my trunk and he got the lower trim and his didn't come with a spare (and only came with a tire fixing kit). When he got a flat, he called me for my spare because the tire fixing kit was useless. I had my car for about 10 years and actually used my spare tire a few times already. It's a necessity.
It's been 20 years since my last flat tire. I used to get flats every few years. Tires are better quality and safety inspectors are strict. My last 2 flats were on low profile rims. Avoid low profile rims and cheap tires. Look for imperfections and take them back before the warranty ends.
They did away with safety inspections in my state, which I think was stupid! I just replaced a paper-thin brake rotor on my friend's truck. I wouldn't let him drive it home before I checked his brakes.
Punctures generally come in clusters I've found,,I've had 3 within a month previously, and I can't remember the last time I had a flat, decades ,rather than years I'd say.
@@ianhill4585 exactly happened to me, further more, patched once and I got punctured twice at the edge so I had to replace a new tire twice! It was a costly couple months and I was afraid to drive anywhere after LOL
Strange that no one commented that the Space Saver tyre should never be fitted to the front wheels, requiring that a front wheel puncture should be should be swapped with a real wheel and and the "doughnut" then fitted to the rear. And this is progress!
How would someone not know if they have a spare tire and if it's full size, a compact size, or one you fill with a compressed air can? What kind of drivers do we have out there? And if they don't know this, I would guess when they are checking tire pressures they totally forget the spare. Wait! Maybe they never check their air pressure too!

Try make the sealant work on a torn or shredded tyre which happens in 99.9 % of cases.
My daughter also purchased a Kia Soul. I also purchased a spare tire for her.
The Kia Soul will accomodate a full size spare as well. Just remove the foam organizer.
Fuel economy rating should be rated with max passenger weight.
No it shouldn't what a dumb statement 😂
Weight only affects fuel economy in city driving too. Highway doesn’t matter. It’s all aero then
Never going to happened ,not even with the ac on
@@adelaferreira4575 the epa does test cars with the ac on. Google how the tests are done
A Full size spare went a few years ago in the uk,the donut went recently and you don’t always get an inflator.
It gonna continue to happen until it reaches the point where they’ll ship out the entire car to you and assemble it yourself like IKEA. 😂
A Johnny Cash car.😅
She was rushing to a spa appointment😆
Perhaps they'll offer a spare tire subscription, where if you cancel, it wont hold air.
If you're on your automotive game, just pick up a spare that fits at a local junkyard. Try it for fit to make sure. If you have space, a full-size spare is best. Then when you have a flat you can run it however long you have to until you can fix/ replace the tire.
Backup cameras are required but not spares? Makes sense
Keep inflating it until you get to a tyre repairer. Ive done that in the past, no problem.
I had owned a 1996 Pontiac Bonneville ssei. This car came with a spare tire and air pump.
As a teenager I had to use my doughnut tire. I was doing a burnout and it blew apart on me. I was stranded at a friends house.
Was going to buy a mustang a few years ago.
I always check out the spare.
It had no spare.
I even told the sales person that it was a stupid idea and walked away from it.
I replaced the space saver tyre in my wife’s car with a full grown one, best thing I ever done
They call that corporate greed
Worst idea especially in the beginning of winter when most Flats occur. you get towed to the tire shop and you have to wait a day or 2 just for them to get to your car close the tire shop so backed up
Soon restaurants won’t give out utensils and you have to bring your own 😂😂😂
And even there are cars, You have to bring Your own rear wiper*, stocks** or driver-display**...
*Hyundai Ioniq 5
** Tesla Mod.3
They're NOT trying to make them lighter so they're more efficient, they're just charging the same for the car and charging you extra for stuff that was always standard. It's just greedy car manufacturers ripping off their customers even more than before.
I will not buy a car without a spare.
many MANY years ago - the car i wanted didn't have a spare - i just went to the "auto junkyard" and got one - problem solved
not always a choice.
You must ride a bike then….
I don’t envy you trying to find a car with a spare nowadays….
The worst part of this is the dealers not telling the customer this when they buy the car.
You should check if there is one when you buy the car !
Last year when I was doing this I asked, also got them to show me as well.
Customer must be thick if they need telling.
If you have a mini spare, you should periodically check the air pressure. You don’t want to change your tire and find out your spare is flat as well.
It won’t be long before such things as; _steering wheel, seatbelts and windows_ … will be extra “options” that you’ll have to buy when you’re shopping for a new car.
Stop being so sensational lol 2:37
not only as options, more like monthly subscriptions, ask BMW :)
It’s like companies charging $2.00 if you elect paper billing.
That's because it cost $2 to print and post vs email for nothing.
@@johnsullivan6709 I’m sure they still claim the postage and cost to print write off on their income tax
You pay a fortune for a new car and the spare looks like it came off a wheelbarrow.
2016 mustang, no spare. Came with a 12 volt compressor with a cartridge of fix a flat built into the pump. Had to clean all that crap out of the tire when I got it fixed.
Greed. Simple. No need to over think it.
Spare wheel is the item of discussion, not spare tyre.
It’s a cost cutting measure nothing more Next on consumer reports why your not getting a remote for your new tv you know that’s coming
Its a regulation passed by obama that caused it
Before purchasing our 7 passenger SUV that was one thing I opened the trunck for.
Even those car app subscriptions fees are ridiculous as well
"You're charging me for keys?"
"How ya gonna start it?"
Jerry Seinfeld to David Puddy _The Seinfeld Show_ circa era 1997
It’s just cost cutting. It was a dealer option when I bought my car. Had to pay extra for them to swap out the tire inflator kit under the trunk floor for a real spare.
Yeah I don't think it has anything to do with gas. I was surprised it didn't have one. There's an air pump. Somebody didn't think that through and now there's no spot for a spare if I buy one either.
My daughter bought a Kia Soul that came without a spare tire. I was able to purchase her one from the Kia dealership, and there was a spot in a well to store it.
Cost cutting pretending to be fuel savings. Do we have the actual fuel savings?
An on/off road vehicle, like most 4 wheel drive vehicles, MUST have a full sized spare tire, space savers are only for 2 wheel drives.
Ridiculous!
It's called CORPORATE GREED!
Make the dealer to provide one or else don't buy from it. Money is in our hand
Next - reducing weight by removing the Engine...
(checks for engine... yes mine has one!)
Negotiate it with your sale. They’ll give it to you
To save the company a ton of money.
"fuel efficiency" yeah ok
Well if you have a flat tyre that would definitely save fuel 😊
Possibly true. I go many years between flats, and most even then are only very slow to lose air.
Criminal! Class action lawsuit
Wife got a used 16 Rav 4 and I got a used 18 Camry. Both have full spares and kits. Shout out Toyota.
Nails have a strange way of evading even quality tires. I always put on higher end tires on my cars and still end up with flats occasionally.
I have not had a flat tire in probably 25 years. I know that I will have one now after writing this though and my car does not have a spare.
If you use the tyre sealant it ruins the tyre. You will then need to purchase a new tyre, and that can be very expensive.
Welcome to 20 years ago 🎉 new news please
yes … must have been a slow news day or someone was very lazy
Strange that no one commented that the Space Saver tyre should never be fitted to the front wheels, requiring that a front wheel puncture should be should be swapped with a real wheel and and the "doughnut" then fitted to the rear. And this is progress!
I would not drive a care without a spare tire, let alone buy one.
Exactly
Check the air pressure in your spare tire at least once a year.
And she was really surprised when she looked and she didn’t have an engine also 🤣🤣🤣
How would someone not know if they have a spare tire and if it's full size, a compact size, or one you fill with a compressed air can? What kind of drivers do we have out there? And if they don't know this, I would guess when they are checking tire pressures they totally forget the spare. Wait! Maybe they never check their air pressure too!
Expensive and heavy 😂
