The Königssee is a mountain lake in the municipality of Schönau am Königssee in the Berchtesgadener Land district. Embedded between the parts of the mountain slopes of Watzmann and Hagengebirge, the elongated lake has a fjord-like character together with the smaller Obersee to the south-east annekentengen - around which the Steinernes Meer forms the end of the valley. It is one of the cleanest lakes in Germany.
Most of the Königssee is in the Berchtesgaden National Park. The owner is the Free State of Bavaria. With the shipping operated by the Bavarian Lake Shipping Company, the lake is one of the Big Five tourist attractions in the district of Berchtesgadener Land.
With effect from June 30, 2021, the Berchtesgadener Land district office blocked the pools at the Königsbach waterfall above the Königssee for a period of five years. The reason is the damage to the animal and plant world due to the sharp increase in the number of visitors due to the popularity of this location in social media.
The name probably does not derive from "King", since the Berchtesgadener Land was never part of a kingdom until 1810 - on the other hand, until 1406, i.e. before it was raised to the rank of prince provost, five of the provosts of the Berchtesgaden monastery bore the name Konrad, for the short form "Kuno" was common at the time (but it is also questionable whether the spelling for the lake derives from this: before 1454 it was "Kchunigsee" and afterwards "Kunigsee").
The spelling Chunigesee is much older: On August 24, 1134, the Basilica Chunigesee, first mentioned the previous year, was consecrated to Saint Bartholomew, the patron saint of alpine farmers - the first predecessor church building on the site of today's pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomew. In response to this, the lake was also temporarily called Bartholomew's Lake.
Since around the end of the 19th century, the lake has been consistently referred to as "Königssee" in the spelling with two "s" (the first s is a fugue s).
The lake flows through the Königsseer Ache, Berchtesgadener Ache and Königsseeache to the Salzach. In the west, the deeply incised ice valley opens up, behind which the highest face of the Eastern Alps, the Watzmann-Ostwand, rises - from the lake level to the southern and central peak there is more than 2100 meters in altitude, the pure wall height is almost 1800 meters. At the foot of the wall is the so-called ice chapel, a huge remnant of avalanche snow, from which the Eisbach (ice ditch) regularly melts out an ice grotto that is in danger of collapsing. Over the millennia, this creek has formed a peninsula in Königssee from the debris it has carried along, the 85-hectare Hirschau, on which stand the old pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä and a small hunting lodge with inn.
At the northern end of the lake, to the east of the outflow into the Königsseer Ache, lies the district (Gnotschaft) Königssee in the district of the same name, Königssee, in the municipality of Schönau am Königssee. West of the Königsseer Ache lies the district of Schönau, with the Gnotschaft Unterschönau on the north-western shore of the lake.
