    Thank you for answering a question that we've been wrestling with in our comms team for ages - how to set the gain level when we're using the iPhone's native video settings. Previously we have had to use Filmic Pro to set mic gain but now I can use iPhone cinematic mode and take control of my audio too with our Rode Videomic Me and our Rode SmartLav+ mics!

    • @Kai-vk5vb
      @Kai-vk5vb 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Curtis Judd Nowadays smartphone are built with slippery metal frame, giant glass panel on both sides, I don’t see most average users who make home videos (chasing kids and dogs?) are willing to risk their phone just for better audio quality. Rode could’ve addressed this by introducing an interchangeable lightning connector mechanism, offering one standard length connector and another longer one (2 mm is probably more than enough), let customers unscrew that red bracket and switch to a longer connector whenever they want. For a 79 bucks mini mic, unfortunately Rode didn’t make that happen. There’ll be a USB-C version in the future, as you can imagine, same problem will still be there for Android users, Rode need to improve their product design concept.

    It looks very close to the Videomicro, but the interference isn’t good news. For me, that was the dealbreaker with the Videomic Go, but that one has a plastic body. I always thought that the Videomicro was better in this respect due to the metal body but it doesn’t look like it from this video. Thanks Curtis.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ian, I don't want to overstate this, as it only happened in that one clip so it seems some other things are at play. The fact that I was able to livestream for 7 minutes with no RF interference was interesting. Most mics without heavy brass bodies will fall prey to RF interference at some point.

    Hi Curtis, thanks for this very accurate review, perhaps the most accurate on TH-cam concerns the microphone in question. I have a specific question though. I record videos in disco and night clubs, do you think this microphone could handle loud music, with powerful bass and ringing highs? Unfortunately the camera audio sucks and I can't attach a microphone anymore big and serious because I already have the flash on the hot shoe and I have nowhere else to mount it. Consequently this would be my only option. I need and answer 😅😂. Anyway, thank you!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good question. Sadly, no, the max SPL this microphone can handle is 115dB SPL which is not loud enough for very loud concerts, unfortunately. (but please be sure to wear ear protection while at those concerts so you don't lose your hearing).

    Another informative video Curtis, very well presented as always! I can say we’ve used both this Rode as well as the Comica version on both iPhones and dslrs and the Comica sounds even smoother and saves you some money! Coming from a professional music production/ engineering background I’ve found that Rodes across the board have a more boomy mid range (sometimes desired) compared to many of its competitors. Just my 5 cents!

    Hi there thank you so much for this honest review! I am looking to use for recording for my podcast and video recording for my podcast as well. Based on your review it sounds like this would work well in both situations I described without having to buy the rode podcaster, boom arm and shock mount. Are my assumptions correct? (I have an iPhone SE) Thanks in advance for your response!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll just need to keep it as close as reasonably possible. It won't sound exactly like a dynamic microphone like the PodMic, but if you're close, it'll sound pretty good.

  • @AWriterWandering
    @AWriterWandering 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m debating between this and this VideoMicro. I like the compactness that the me-l offers, not needing any special rig to attach it to the camera, as well as the real-time audio monitoring, though the obvious downside is that it will only work with devices that have a lightning port. Hmm...

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have an iPhone and you felt that the audio quality was ok, I'd opt for this. Convenience plays a bigger part that most of us are willing to admit when it comes to actually recording content while away from home or studio.

  • @OzDrew70

    Hey Curtis, Great Channel for all things light & sound. Just wondering if you can, or know of a channel that can actually explain the settings (Effects) in the Rode Rec App. There's one particular that gives a VERY brief explanation, but nothing very detailed. You're the first the I have seen give a concise explanation on the HighPass Filter which I think will definitely help me out recording using the iPhoneX, Mic Me-L & a GoPro Hero 4. Thanks for that!!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Drew, I generally avoid using the effects in RODERec and prefer to apply effects in post where I can back out of them if they don't improve the audio - that is to say, in post editing, you can work non-destructively.
      That being said, RODERec has the following effects:
      - Remove DC - this centers the audio waveform around the minus infinity center line. Not sure why they put this in here as you generally should not get much DC offset with the RODE microphones.
      - Dynamics - This allows you to compress the highest amplitude peaks and reduce the sound in between phrases. The general goal with this is to make the overall recording louder in most cases.
      - EQ - Allows you to boost or cut different frequencies. The High Pass is useful for reducing low frequency rumble or mild wind when it hits the microphone capsule. Band Cut/Boost allows you to choose a frequency you want to cut or boost. Often I find that a mild cut at around 900 Hz can mellow out harsh sounding dialogue recordings. The Low Pass is useful for cutting high frequency sound you do not want.
      I hope that helps a bit. Good luck!

      Curtis Judd Thank You so much. Very Helpful! I have played with the settings, getting the results I have wanted however not fully understanding why.

    Incredible review (of course, you are the best) and timely for my upcoming gear purchase. Quick questions:
    1. Is the smooth 4 balance issue with the windscreen only or any time the mic is attached (as is it toast after the minute mark either way like you reference)?
    2. Is there a extender cable extender, or a wireless nub for the lightening jack, that can extend the mic’s distance from the phone? (I’m not sure if this was what gary stockton in the comments section was talking about)???
    3. Have you done a comparison video of several micro iPhone mics and is this your top recommendation in that category?
    4. I am traveling to extreme temps (cold and then hot / humid) - any thoughts on this mic’s vs other durability?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bruce: 1) it did not seem to make a difference, the Smooth 4 wouldn’t hold the iPhone 7+ and the mic either way. 2) I believe that is what Gary referred to. I have not tested this myself. 3) I reviewed the Shure MV88 separately. Of the two, I prefer the VideoMic me-L for the types of things I usually shoot. The MV88 is better for recording stereo sound effects. 4) I did not have an opportunity to test this in extreme weather so not sure how it will hold up in the extremes. It is a consumer level device.

  • @colfinnie3510
    @colfinnie3510 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cheers for excellent review. Have ordered this mic. A question though on the wind shield. To my ear the shield did a good job, given the very handy inclusion of the tree in the background to get and idea of strength of wind. Loud wind rumble gone, as far as I could tell, and the amount of wind noise seems to have matched what you would hear normally. Do you think I'm being too forgiving or do you agree some wind noise makes the vid sound more natural?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, you still want it to sound like you were actually in that location, you just don't want the distortion of the wind blowing on the microphone capsule. This strikes that balance nicely.

    Awesome review as always, Curtis! By the way, can you please recommend some cheap or middle priced lavalier mic for iPhone (for lightning connection)? I was using GORA mics that you did recommend several years ago, and they was awesome. But two of four of them are dead (which is okat, given time and the amount of recording) and now we are moving to post-mini-jack era, so...

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mikhail, Thanks! I wish I could recommend some but the only lavalier with a lightning connector I have used and like was the Sennheiser MKE2 Digital and unfortunately, that is quite expensive. They also make a Clip Mic digital which is around $200 USD and doesn't sound good on voices with a lot of sibilance: bhpho.to/2yOdLr4
      Aputure has their A.Lyra mic but I didn't have good luck with it. Your mileage may vary: amzn.to/2CGDRDo

    With the problems fitting the mic on when you are using a phone case...I wonder if you could file down the part of the case around the lightning port in order to make it fit. You would compromise your case slightly but if you would be using this mic often it would probably be worth it.

      The MV88 is more versatile, but this is a simpler, easier approach. It should work for 2 people if you're at arm's length from the phone.

    Thank you for putting this together. Have you compared this microphone to the motiv audio mic for iphone 8?
    My other question is have you found a way to successfully use an external microphone such as a zoom f1 with the iphone video and match then up in post production? I have experienced a lot of frustration with this because of the iphone filming at variable frame rates and when I try to match up sound from an external recorder, after about a minute the sound runs away/becomes unsynched. Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

    I have read about rf interference and it is cellular/data high rf frequencies. WiFi carries both cellular/data and another non data mode so turn off cellular and keep WiFi on.
    The problem is when there is no WiFi to livestream with and only cellular/data such as lte.
    I want to know if this interference is only with iPhones because my friend has this microphone and a Samsung phone and only live-streams with data and gets no rf interference.
    I have an iPhone and am waiting for rf chokes to arrive to put on my microphone cord to try and filter out the rf interference.

    I recently go the Electro Voice Re20 and it doesn't seem to sound much better than my $70 mic when connected to Tascam dr60 mkii… does a higher quality preamp on a Zoom F8n make a huge difference in sound quality of a mic like the RE20? At $400 was somewhat disappointed in quality compared to my cheap microphone. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, that depends on the other mic. Inexpensive microphones can sound good.
      But yes, the preamp can make a difference as well. My experience is that dynamic mics require a lot of gain and it is usually only higher quality preamps that can do that well.
      That being said, I can’t say how much improvement you’ll find since there are several factors at play here and several unknowns.

    • @michaelsvlog
      @michaelsvlog 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So basically my cheap mic is an excellent mic at this point. However the RE20 is built like a tank so I know it won't break anytime soon for years to come unlike my last expensive mic. If I am correct part of the reason the $70 mic may sound just as good is because it is a condenser mic vs dynamic.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That can be a factor, but keep in mind that there are tradeoffs. Dynamic mics like the RE20 are much better at rejecting ambient sound and reflections off of walls in small rooms so there's a time and a place for each.

    • @michaelsvlog
      @michaelsvlog 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I understand that.... I bought the mic for a project because room is untreated and client needs me to do voice overs. However in the future I want a mic for clarity and quality when I have a studio space. I know you mention the SCX one mic in one of your videos is that going to be in another league of its own in terms of clarity and richness of audio compared to re20? Basically need help with picking my next mic upgrade for high demand clients that only want the best. Or how about the schoeps mic as well although that one is insanely more expensive is it much better than scx one?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, I’m not sure what the $70 mic is, so I can’t make a recommendation in relation to that, but the Audix is decent. I find that what sounds best on one voice may not be great on another voice. The Schoeps, for example, sounds great with many voices, but not those with a lot of sibilance. I’d probably try some mics first if you can. Or listen to as many samples if you cannot. Voiceover is often recorded with large diaphragm condenser microphones so that’s worth considering as well.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Summer2015, it depends on what you listened with. On my Focal monitors, I could hear a difference between the phone's mic and the VideoMic Me-L for sure. The phone sounded quite a bit tinnier and especially in the restaurant sample, you could barely hear my friend talking due to all the other noise on the phone mic. The biggest difference is the focus that this mic delivers over the phone mic, but it does capture a tiny bit more bass as well.

    • @spritual_enlightenment
      @spritual_enlightenment 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Curtis Judd, Maybe I am losing hearing of some frequency. At restaurant scene, I heard men's voice was difficult to hear, but I thought he was far away than previous shot because his shot was changed. If not, this mic makes a big difference. But about low pitches, with headphones I used to hear, I didn't notice much difference. Only I found iphone is quite good. So I am losing... pity. Now I can't comment about sound any more...

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the second shot without the mic was the same distance, right after he sat down. A big factor is what headphones/speakers you listen with. It'd be really hard to hear any difference with earbuds or phone speakers. The difference is detectable for me with high quality headphones or on my reference monitors. I wouldn't assume it is your ears. :)

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Counter weights might work. The problem is that the phone's horizontal axis center of gravity is moved beyond what the Smooth 4 was designed to handle when the mic is mounted on there. Adding weight to the other side might help.

    • @LuckyDogProductionsHawaii
      @LuckyDogProductionsHawaii 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Chris, I 'm thinking more of a double clamp to hold the mic and to attach to the Smooth4, with a short male/female lightning cable. That way we avoid the interference issues with the button on the iphone and the balance issue of the extra weight on the gimbal. Anyone know of a double clamp that would fit the diameter of the Smooth4 and the mic? I'm sure it's out there somewhere :))

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure about a clamp, but somebody else just recommended this counterweight: amzn.to/2wZtJjd
      Note that with a clamp, you will still need to move the phone out enough to get the lightning connector into the phone which means you'll still likely need a counterweight (unless you can find a right-angle lighting connector and maybe then it won't move the phone center of gravity out too much...)
      Good luck!

      Is that the only difference? Does the original ME have A/D & preamp (as I understand the ME-L has) or does the ME rely on the phone for this (and does it even matter?). When I listen to your examples using only the iPhone mic, it is impossible for me to hear if the difference is caused by the quality of the build in microphone or the iPhone signal processing.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A few notes: The original did NOT have an A/D converter, just fed analogue signal to the phone and the phone took care of the A/D conversion. This doesn't appear to make a big difference and no, I wouldn't consider this a major factor in audio quality results. What makes a bigger difference is the fact that both versions of the Me have cardioid polar patterns so are more directional than the iPhone mic. You can hear the difference on high quality headphones. If you listen back with phone speakers, you may not hear a difference.
