I would recommend tricky brains, love on delivery and fight back to school. I think these are easier for Western viewers to understand. Some movies might need a basic understanding of the culture, mythology etc. Ps. Hong Kong's English subtitles in the 80/90 were famous for its accuracy 😂.
Please react to KGF chapter 2 teaser which is most viewed teaser in the whole world, KGF chapter 1 is fully action-packed, emotional movie which u can react to it, also there is no copyright strike to the teaser reaction,it is my humble request to u react. Tq
My Top 15 Stephen Chow films, based on humour, story and how many times I've rewatched them: 1. A Chinese Odyssey Part One & Two 2. From Beijing with Love 3. The God of Cookery 4. Shaolin Soccer 5. Forbidden City Cop 6. King of Comedy 7. Kung Fu Hustle 8. Justice, My Foot! 9. All for the Winner 10. Hail the Judge 11. Love on Delivery 12. Flirting Scholar 13. All's Well, Ends Well 14. Fist of Fury 1991 15. Out of the Dark
John 14:6 "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.' " Jesus does love yall, and he'll get you through dark places. God bless yall in Jesus's name, amen ✝️🙏🏻🫶
Happy to see you guys did this reaction video! Just some explanations for the movies (I'm from Hong Kong) The wife looks totally different when she heard Leo will offer her money if she doesn't kill herself, that's a sense of humor, with a message like " Ya, you killed my husband, but I love money more than my husband" Why did the wife wear red shirt before jumping? Because in Chinese culture, most of the time "Red" represents good things, BUT when it comes to things about ghost, people believe red clothes represents the great hatred which will make the ghost very powerful. That's why Leo tried his best to prevent the wife from dying.
Glad that you guys like it. One of my favorite Steven Chow’s movies. A few fun random fun facts. 1) It is a low budget movie as no major film maker then thinks Steven can pull of off Comedy with ghosty theme in 1995 (note: Scary Movie is from 2000) 2) It was shot at a new Public housing block expecting residence to move in. This type of high density high raising public housing is extremely common in HK. They even comes in standard layout exactly like that in groups called “Estates” Long corridor, back staircases that no one uses except for smoking (or other dodgy business), shutter door of each units are still very relevant today. 3) These “guards” would be real estate mangers. There are usually 2 working real estate managers anytime in each building to gate keep the main building entrance. Patrolling each floor to make sure no non residence hanging around the area (like the dope) is part of their job too. 4) the introduction of this movie set at a pace as if it were a stage play. All main characters were introduced in the first couple minutes 5) it is not unreal for people to throw thing down like this. There were real life cases where people actually throw down a tv due to anger/ mental illness in these estates 6) At the closing scene, Steven character's self sacrifice is referred to an well known Buddist motto : “If I don't go to hell (to save life), who else will?” 7) Not surprising, this movie didn't do well in box office at 1995 compare to other Steven’s Comedies due to its randomness and ghosty theme. But it continues to become popular and becomes a cult HK movie of that era
Still living in one of these estates myself. Yup there are quite a lot of security guards, and they are rightfully needed. The estates are like the ghetto of the city, designated for low income families. But also thanks to the amount of security guards, these shitholes are very livable.
From Beijing With Love (Chinese: 國產凌凌漆) is a 1994 Hong Kong spy comedy film directed by Stephen Chow and Lee Lik-chi. The film is a very direct spoof of the James Bond films.
Thank you guys for reacting to this!!! I recommended this in the comment section of god of cookery and didn't know you actually did this lol. It's definitely in the top 5 of my favorite Stephen Chow films. Mostly because it is so different from what he usually makes. The perfect balance between horrorness and comedy is truly unique. Great reaction!
YEESSSS! Thanks so much for being the first on TH-cam to react to this!! This is one of my favourite Stephen Chow movies growing up! Out of the Dark was considered to be what the Cable guy was to Jim Carrey. This movie almost ruined Chow’s career because it did so poorly at the box office but developed a cult fallowing. Great job guys, keep it up! Ps. You should do squid game before the hype dies down Other Stephen Chow recommendations: The mermaid A Chinese odyssey
Its a mix, its an Apartment complex. with the lower floors as Shopping Malls and small Businesses. Leon the professional, Highlander, there are quite a few western movie parodies in this.
As a HongKonger, Stephen Chow movie is a part of our culture. We kept on watching his movie (but his production after Kung Fu Hustle is not good, since he shifted his production to China. Thus, after that the movies are not so Hong Kong Style). I think the most funny movie are Hail the Judge (九品芝麻官), Flirting Scholar (唐伯虎點秋香), and The God of Cookery (食神). Don't know there are English subtitle version or not. And I want to know how foreigners react to them.
Please do Stephen Chow's FROM BEIJING WITH LOVE next. His James Bond spoof (and also since the new Bond film is out). This is one of his best, and way better than OUT OF THE DARK, IMO. The jokes are a lot more accessible to an international audience, and there is a nice balance of humour and heartfelt moments in this film. Stephen Chow is the King of Nonsensical Comedy! (Oh, and 1 pound = 10 Hong Kong Dollars FYI, so just divide by 10).
Absolutely agree! The laughs in this film are presented more naturally and are closely tied to Chinese politics of the time. This film has certainly made Stephen Chow a master of political satire.
FYI there are a few Stephen Chow films that are more accessible than this one for western audiences. Forbidden City Cop (1996). Just released on Blu-Ray in the UK. From Beijing with Love (1994). Flirting Scholar (1993) with Gong Li. Love on delivery (1994). With Out of the Dark, you guys went deep.
Just a quick share from me: This film’s focus was more about the folktales, such as why that lady on the roof wear the red dress before jumping. I felt that this movie was also a tribute to HK gore/ horror films such as the HK Zombies, which also a very unique genre. Personally I would prefer his version of “journey of the west” as it is more like a adult version fairytales. This is first film he directed without without him playing any roles. Also the 2nd “King of comedy”. But the 1st one was also a hidden gem to the western world. A small hint was that it was largely based on his career or events he encountered in his career. And a lot of Easter eggs as always in his films. Finally love see more westerners appreciate his works. P.S. a martial arts movie to recommend is Dragon or Wu Xia, different name for the same Donnie Yen movie.
Thanks for reacting to this! A childhood classic, still so good this day. The film is made in 1995, right before HK's hand over in 1997. It might echoed some public sentiment at that time. Can be totally subjective view though.
At 3:10, you asked what this style of comedy is comparable to in the western world. Any of those movies with Leslie Nielsen such as Airplane and the Naked Gun series comes to mind haha.
It’s interesting to see how the world has opened up . Growing up in Australia however having parents influence with Hk cinema - and growing up with chow films . Goddamn classic
Out of the Dark is one of the underrated Stephen Chow movies. They actually did a lot of Hollywood parodies in Stephen Chow movies. For example in this movie he is wearing sunglasses wearing trench coat carrying a flower pot with a short haired girl, just like Jean Reno and Natalie Portman's Leon 1994 movie. Another one I can think of is Sixty Million Dollar Man's Pulp Fiction parody where they did the Twist dancing.
I’m a Chinese (from Hong Kong), this movie was from my childhood, and my family and I really enjoyed it! But it’s surprising (and amazing) to see that Caucasian fans such as your yourself also enjoying it and finding different pop references within the movie! If I knew you guys, I’d definitely want to watch, review and enjoy Stephen Chow movies with you guys! Keep up the good work! Love your reviews/commentaries! 👍👍👍
hello, i'm a HongKonger and i'ld recommend "The Imp" (1980's), which is a significant movie of Hong Kong New Wave, and somebody would say this movie is the most thriller ever.
Noticing that you mentioned the parallel to British humour and well it is a Hong Kong movie that was during a time when the UK was still control of it. Also, there are some of the local folklore that may have been lost on anyone not familiar with Chinese superstition. The Ox Tears being able give you ability see the dead is because the Chinese version of grim reapers said to ferry the dead to the afterlife has a ox head. Hence any kind of product from cows such as tears or milk (hence the milk chocolate in Maltesers) are used to fight off the ghosts. Lily’s are also flowers given at funerals so
this movie is one of my favorites from stephen, a lot does get lost in translation but you guys were still able to give it a 7/10 which is I find pretty crazy still
I've watched this movie like a hundred times, but now reading the subtitles really can't express the excellent humour, which is very subtle, in their dialogues
Great reaction guys. Try one of my favorite Stephen Chow movie, Love on Delivery. It's inspired by a Japanese manga and is more digestible for non-Chinese.
There was a movie by Stephen Chow which has a part where the characters operated based on this theory. Since “ghosts” are previously human, they should be scared of the same things when they were alive. The movie 回魂夜 was about ghost-busting Stephen chow style 😂 I think the movie name in English is Out of the Dark.
So great to see you guys dig into Steven Chow's movie!! I've been watching his movie since child, his movie is so special! Please watch Love on delivery, you won't regret it!
Many Hong Kong culture references in this film and probably will make foreigners felt very random when watching it. The scene that Leo asked if there’s any horse racing today, and the guy took out a newspaper for Leo, it’s because when there’s a horse racing in Hong Kong, the mid-aged men who interested in racing gambling mostly will buy the newspaper of horse racing (for the racing program & some tips for gambling). Quite a few jokes are lost in translation (felt sad about it). Anyway, Out of the Dark is one of my favorite of Chow’s movies, a classic one.
From Beijing with Love - funniest Stephen Chow movie. Only concern is whether the comedic translation can do this movie justice as the subtle jokes and reactions are what makes this a masterpiece.!
In terms of comedy, maybe out of top 10 but this is still funnier than most chinese comedy movies. Yet it's definitely one of my top Chinese horror movies, it's got everything in it. Scary, creativity, comedy, etc... Many classic quotes I remember from this movie,ie, attack the ghost with chocolate and catch it with wrapping paper.. etc etc It's also in this movie he talked about facing fear such as touching poo etc.. 😅
One of Stephen Chow's funniest works before he moved his production base to China. Ironically, this film was not so well received back then, but is now regarded as one of the best cult film classics locally.
I think this belief may have 2 origins. People tend to think that someone may become a vicious ghost after death if they has a very tragic death and their body is totally covered in blood, or if a bride or groom dies on their wedding day as Chinese wedding outfits are mostly red. Such tragic deaths were gradually generalized that anyone dies in a red outfit is gonna become a vicious ghost.
My favorites are Flirting Scholar, The Mad Monk, Love on Delivery, All for the Winner. Flirting Scholar is full of Cantonese wordplays I'm not sure how much you can get from it. Come to think of it, I think you might love A Chinese Odyssey Part One - Pandora's Box, and A Chinese Odyssey Part Two - Two Cinderella. They are parodies of Journey to the West. Very relatable to all cultures I believe, and lots of martial arts actions mixed with comedies. In fact as far as I can remember I think A Chinese Odyssey was the first of its kind to depict Son Wu Kong as rebellious defiant hero which the Heaven is the stuck up asshole, rather than savage ruffian brat from its original novel.
Stephen Chow is really a greatest Comedian in Hong Kong or Asia, I think there is no one can replace his unique expression of comedy. Just like the classic character that made by Rowan Atkinson, no one can replace them.
I would recommend watching Tricky Brains, Forbidden City Cop, God of Gamblers 2, Fight Back to School, and Love on Delivery. This one's a bit harder for western viewers to understand because of the culture gap.
That guy who always Dressed like a guy is a actual crew member, I remembered him to be the vice director. Also the guy who got sh•t on his face is the director.
As a Hong Konger, I would suggest you guys watch Journey to the West, both 1 and 2. They are the saddest and most heartbreaking Stephen Chow movies. I highly recommended them. As for funniest, that should be Hail the Judge, but most of the jokes require certain level of Cantonese background. From Beijing with Love is a parody of James Bond movies and it kind of sarcasm to the Communist Party, thus it was censored in China. Yet it is a good movie!
I believe HK comedy was strongly influenced by Monty Python Which was very apparent with the Hui Brothers comedy trio in the 70-80s This non-sequitur style was later perfected by Stephen Chow in the 90s
I really hope you guys can teact to Tricky brain, definitely one of my favourite This is a suggestion from a Hong Kong viewer who grow up eith Stephen chow's movie
Where does this rank amongst your favourite Stephen Chow movies?
It's not even in my top 20 I think
I would recommend tricky brains, love on delivery and fight back to school. I think these are easier for Western viewers to understand. Some movies might need a basic understanding of the culture, mythology etc.
Ps. Hong Kong's English subtitles in the 80/90 were famous for its accuracy 😂.

2. From Beijing with Love
3. The God of Cookery
4. Shaolin Soccer
5. Forbidden City Cop

13. All's Well, Ends Well
14. Fist of Fury 1991
15. Out of the Dark
From beijing with love
This is one of his best. If you could understand Cantonese, his jokes are definitely in another level.
Agree, it’s my top one.
John 14:6 "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.' " Jesus does love yall, and he'll get you through dark places. God bless yall in Jesus's name, amen ✝️🙏🏻🫶
Please do Stephen Chow's Fight back to school, you're gonna love it
nah I doubt they would understand the joke.
The costumes of Steven Chow and Karen Mok are actually giving tribute to the movie "Leon The Professional", so as the flower he carried.
Happy to see you guys did this reaction video!
Just some explanations for the movies (I'm from Hong Kong)
The wife looks totally different when she heard Leo will offer her money if she doesn't kill herself, that's a sense of humor, with a message like " Ya, you killed my husband, but I love money more than my husband"

I like how Stephen Chow can turn something so dark such as murder, death, revenge into a good comedy.
Support from Hong Kong!! This really a classic, please do more Stephen Chow’s Movie Reactions !!
Still remember the first time I watch this film, as a kid, it scares the shit out of me!!!!

Other Stephen Chow recommendations:
The mermaid
A Chinese odyssey
As a fan, The mermaid is not that great, I think movies after Kung Fu Hustle are not as good as his old works any more
Its a mix, its an Apartment complex. with the lower floors as Shopping Malls and small Businesses.
Leon the professional, Highlander, there are quite a few western movie parodies in this.

I freaken love this comedy horror he did. Especially the test your fear scene. Haha every dynamite explosion was like cartoon network comedy haha 😂😂😂
The junkie was the assistant director of the movie and the security guard who got slapped the most was the main director.
At 3:10, you asked what this style of comedy is comparable to in the western world. Any of those movies with Leslie Nielsen such as Airplane and the Naked Gun series comes to mind haha.
Growing up this was one of my fav HK horror comedy, even now is still pretty funny.
It’s interesting to see how the world has opened up . Growing up in Australia however having parents influence with Hk cinema - and growing up with chow films .
Goddamn classic
Did you guys recognize Ah Qun's actress Karen Mok is Turkey from God of Cookery?

Please watch Love on delivery, you won't regret it!
It's a spoof on: Leon the Professional
also, notice the Highlander reference when he was electrocuted lol
So many pop reference in Stephen Chow films
Stephen chow is like doing a Chinese rendition of Peter sellers. More specifically sellers on the pink panthers series.
@19:03 you are right. People call him "Yu Fah' meaning "flower like".
Many Hong Kong culture references in this film and probably will make foreigners felt very random when watching it.

Woo hoo! Another Stephen Chow’s movie reaction!
looking forward to see the first ever From Beijing with Love reaction video on TH-cam
One of Stephen Chow's funniest works before he moved his production base to China. Ironically, this film was not so well received back then, but is now regarded as one of the best cult film classics locally.
Stephen Chow should have made more horror/ mystical movies I really love his style
Chinese folklore believed that if a person suicide wearing red clothes, will become a spirit or vengeance 😬
That Leon the Professional shot was soooo funny
I think you guys are the only channel to react to this movie, please react to more Stephen's movies
My favorites are Flirting Scholar, The Mad Monk, Love on Delivery, All for the Winner. Flirting Scholar is full of Cantonese wordplays I'm not sure how much you can get from it. That shaw brothers intro always puts chills

Omg this is my favourite, thank you for doing Hong Kong movie :)
Stephen Chow is really a greatest Comedian in Hong Kong or Asia, I think there is no one can replace his unique expression of comedy.
Just like the classic character that made by Rowan Atkinson, no one can replace them.
this really scared me in my childhood but also funny when i watched it Again 10years later
The reaction of Stephen chow"s movie is best
Finally!! You guys picked this film to watch!!
This was one of his hidden gems in my opinion...I highly recommend "Flirting Scholar, Love On Delivery, and A Chinese Odyssey Parts I & II."
I would recommend watching Tricky Brains, Forbidden City Cop, God of Gamblers 2, Fight Back to School, and Love on Delivery. This one's a bit harder for western viewers to understand because of the culture gap.
next Stephen chow's movie recommendation: All for the Winner (Highly), From Beijing with Love, The Tricky Master, Sixty Million Dollar Man,
all funny🤣🤣🤣🤣👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Don’t forget legend movie, a god of gambler “back to shanghai”

很少有人会把恐怖片和喜剧做结合,而且结合的非常好。
《惊声尖笑》算一个,而这部电影是另外一种尝试
I mean I very enjoy the king of comedy. It's really really a good moive. absolutly.
I wanna watch Leon the Professional

As a Hong Konger, I would suggest you guys watch Journey to the West, both 1 and 2. They are the saddest and most heartbreaking Stephen Chow movies. I highly recommended them. As for funniest, that should be Hail the Judge, but most of the jokes require certain level of Cantonese background. From Beijing with Love is a parody of James Bond movies and it kind of sarcasm to the Communist Party, thus it was censored in China. Yet it is a good movie!
it actually haven't be censored in China, at least I watched the full cantonese version when I was a child
I believe HK comedy was strongly influenced by Monty Python
Which was very apparent with the Hui Brothers comedy trio in the 70-80s
This non-sequitur style was later perfected by Stephen Chow in the 90s
When I see the thumbnail, I said. WTF, Chinese Leon the professional ripoff? Then it I saw Stephen chow, now I know he did a parody of it
This is my all time top 1 Stephen Chow's movie!
To enjoy Stephen Chow's films to their fullest, remember: get the 100% uncut version
I really hope you guys can teact to Tricky brain, definitely one of my favourite
This is a suggestion from a Hong Kong viewer who grow up eith Stephen chow's movie
from Beijing with love is not quite random joke. hope you can try watching it.
