I remember when I first started working as an ASL interpreter I was working in educational interpreting at a college.. and I was in an art class where the teacher went around asking the students to show their homework.. my Deaf client was very gifted in art and when it was his turn to show his work he said “ I didn’t do it.” The teacher asked “ you didn’t do the work?” And then I couldn’t believe what came next but my team was like “ yup you’re seeing what you’re seeing; voice it!” He said “ no I didn’t do the work because it was a waste of my time. I keep telling you I want something more challenging and you don’t listen to me so I’m not going to waste my time with this bullshit!” Lol .. back then it was intimidating having to voice those situations… but now I jump at the chance!!
There's the perfect protocol statement to either derail it or keep it coming and relay the message. We should notify our client about the foul language and ask how to proceed.
