Jian Beckford Yep. Marcus is seriously competitive player...he often lures his bandmates into duels of musical prowess. You gotta be tough to keep up with this guy.
The riff in itself isn't that complicated. What blows my mind about Miller's bass playing is the way he can hold something that simple and make it groove THAT much and for THAT long. His endurance is so god damn impressive and how his groove is constantly rock solid for the whole damn song. Mind=Funked
For all you people will the negative comments, how many concerts have you been booked for? How many CD's have you sold? Do you have a band? The bass guitar is the highlight here. How can you over look the energy Marcus is playing with? This band's talent is amazing. Don't hate. Sounds like jealousy to me.
I love how the alto sax player makes his instrument sing, scream and sound so liquid. And Marcus, well, not much that hasn't been said about this kind of bass brilliance and mastery. Like, WOW.
What can I say, Marcus Miller is an inspiration to all who meet him both as a person and a truly great Muso. Peace! From Paul and Sue down under in Perth WA.
Not so much Hard Slappng but rather, just super controlled and super percussive and beautifully melodic in areas. Does anyone else have problems breathing and want to cry when they hear this kind of brilliant playing?
I've heard the name loads of times but I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've ever actually watched and listened to Marcus Miller. Absolutely incredible slap bass. I've been missing out!
Right. All musicality aside, it takes years to develop this level of endurance. Most people who can do this at all can do it for about 30 seconds before cramping up. This is pure athleticism.
Double thumbing technique is awesome and the groove is spot on. Technical and funky at the same time.. This is seriously amazing playing by one of the best in the business
maverick7376 Well, considering I'm 18, i don't have many friends older than 20. But I mean, these big name bands. Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Meshuggah, Suffocation. These are all bands whose members are well over the age of 30 and 40 and still continue to make metal music. Maybe metal wasn't your thing, and maybe in the near future i'll grow out of it too, but I'm just saying that your sweeping generalization isn't necessarily correct.
maverick7376 I'm 26 going on 27 and while my musical tastes have certainly broadened and evolved, I still listen to heavy metal and love it; I just have more bands to enjoy. My guess is you were never a metal head and only did it to be cool. You don't just "grow out of it", fuck that assumption. You're an asshole, sorry. Baran Yildiz Don't listen to anyone when they tell you "it's just a phase". It's a trap.
There is funk bass and then there is Marcus Miller. There's many outstanding bassists out there but Mr. Miller, in my humble opinion, is funkier than Larry Graham, Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Verdine White, and anyone else I can think of. DAMN! This is HOT!
Rennard Henry yeah, he isn't the best slap bassist in the world when it comes to technique, but his ability to write music is much better than all other solo bassists I've heard so far. He's by far my favourite musician
Tower Of Power..."What is Hip" being played slapped style in an amazing way. And, no he is not playing Roccos's original line but applying and implying it.Brilliant Marcus!!
Another I would add is that some people just aren't ready for genius. Mr. Miller is clearly so, so full of music creating songs within songs. Organist/keyboardist, Great! But he was not as ready for Mr. Miller, who clearly, to my ears (as a musician listening) was rather directing the flow. Phenom, Mr. Miller. You know it. Mr. Miller takes things much further than just the song idea. He will bring it higher, further. You have to HEAR where he is going, what he's doing and not stay on your own planet if when playing with Marcus Miller. Go where he goes, and the music further flows. Trust!
It was 1981 when I heard Marcus playing for the first time at the Montreux Jazz Festival CH. He was playing with Michael Brecker, David Sanborn and Mike Manieri for 3 hours. Who wondered when he play such things today.
This song is called "what is hip" by Tower of power. If you love a solid funk out and have not heard of them, check it out. Great band and the the bass player does some fine work on the origianl version too.
This is awesome!!! Well... I use to play the drums but that love faded and now I'm into the Bass Guitar... This is inspiration for me right here... Had a guitar sitting for nearly a year now so from the starting of this week I've been practicing and I see results already.
If you like your bass slapped fast in a major key, go Level 42. To go to the ultimate end of the spectrum, I would recommend the tracks "43", "Heathrow", "Sandstorm" and "Almost There". Not saucy enough? Try "Brass Licks" by Uzeb. You'll never turn back!
I used to play this song in a band back in the day, and it always had to be the last song of a set because I would be spent after playing it... I wish I had adopted the in and out thumb style he's using here, might have saved me some energy. Marcus is the man..
That sax player played that solo like his life depended on it!! that was so dope!!
If you've ever seen the way Miller looks at his musicians on stage sometimes, Han in particular, his life may very well have depended on it.
Sax player was really cooking.
Brilliant!
Jian Beckford Yep. Marcus is seriously competitive player...he often lures his bandmates into duels of musical prowess. You gotta be tough to keep up with this guy.
I thought he struggled a bit, just my opinion ... btw i am a bassist & love Miller, he revolutionized electric playing
Matt Chase listen to a song called TANK by the Seatbelts, this is dope and they play like life depends on it!! very passionate song
For those that do not play the bass...his fingers are made of titanium and carbon fiber. That is not easy to play, I love it!
i have shaken his right hand, it is fat like bears paw!!!!
My hands were tired 1 minute in. Lmao.
🤣🤣🤣
Omg double thumb at crazy speed 😲
Exactly! You can’t really appreciate what you’re listening to until you’ve tried to play this!
This whole band together is ridiculous! Everyone sounds amazing!!!
The riff in itself isn't that complicated. What blows my mind about Miller's bass playing is the way he can hold something that simple and make it groove THAT much and for THAT long. His endurance is so god damn impressive and how his groove is constantly rock solid for the whole damn song. Mind=Funked

Well said!
I've played a long time and let me tell you something...these guys are great! If one does not like it fine, RESPECT IT!
who is on organs?
mmt mmt Federico González Peña
mmt mmt F. Pena on keyboards.
I love how the alto sax player makes his instrument sing, scream and sound so liquid. And Marcus, well, not much that hasn't been said about this kind of bass brilliance and mastery. Like, WOW.
The Marcus Miller and Drummer brain is conected. They're speaking the same language. Very impressive!!!
True music and true art. Marcus, you are a true musician and deserve to be commended.
This is why I play Bass. Love it..
Absolutely my fellow player. This is my love of music; playing awesome bass.
What can I say, Marcus Miller is an inspiration to all who meet him both as a person and a truly great Muso. Peace! From Paul and Sue down under in Perth WA.
So clean, you can hear every note that Marcus is playing. Amazing.
So tight! This band plays so tight!
Everytime, i'm bored of practicing, i'm looking this video, and directly pick up the bass again. Pure Inspiration
Isn`t that "What is hip?" by tower of power? Sounds like it is.
Yep
+Dmz248 HEll yes!!!... Marcus slapping one of the worlds greatest finger lines........ amazing!
absolutley
at twice the bpm
Rocco prestias great line getting the hell slapped out of it.
My bass hero!!! He's the reason why i play bass... Particularly a 70'ish Jazzbass :)
Marcus Miller...you got a luv this bass playing machine incredible!!!!
Not so much Hard Slappng but rather, just super controlled and super percussive and beautifully melodic in areas. Does anyone else have problems breathing and want to cry when they hear this kind of brilliant playing?
I have problems thinking that Marcus has his hands so busy, what if his face iches haha I think he is amazing, has good technique and rythm
Good musicianship gives me the chills when I hear it.
Ana Banana You don't notice your face itching when you do this. You're too busy.
He's double thumbing and muting a bit. It's like playing with a pick almost and then you have the other fingers to add more notes with.
The hardest hitting song by Mr. Miller I have ever heard. Can't get enough of this. played it maybe 40 times over the years. STILL my favorite.
That chromatic minor thirds descending with 6ths thing Alex Han does at the end of his solo is cool!
here here dude!
What Ceri said..............
Double thumbing technique is awesome and the groove is spot on. Technical and funky at the same time.. This is seriously amazing playing by one of the best in the business
Im a metal head and will always love metal... But this...... This right here is amazing.... \m/
+maverick7376 Why not enjoy both?
+maverick7376 That's a very bold assumption...
maverick7376 Well that's a gross generalization.... Metal is just a genre of music dude. You don't need to be an angsty teen to listen to it.
maverick7376 Well, considering I'm 18, i don't have many friends older than 20. But I mean, these big name bands. Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Meshuggah, Suffocation. Great version of 'What Is Hip'. Go Marcus!!! Thanks for uploading!

I believe larry graham is alot funkier
Even Larry will tell you Marcus is funkier .
rusher98 not really, marcus is more jazzy, whereas larry is pure funk. Both of them are great bassists tho.
Marcus is undoubtedly one of the best bass players on earth!
Tower Of Power..."What is Hip" being played slapped style in an amazing way. And, no he is not playing Roccos's original line but applying and implying it.Brilliant Marcus!!
This is what happens when genius and hardwork intersect/get married. Bless u Marcus!!!
So much energy in this performance, sick!!
A tremendously hard bass part to play in fingerstyle and Marcus is slappin the hell out of it.
This band is awesome. Miss Seeing and Experiencing Concerts
Sax man earns his paycheck!!! Excellent!!!
Another I would add is that some people just aren't ready for genius. Mr. Miller is clearly so, so full of music creating songs within songs. Organist/keyboardist, Great! kkk
Awesome playing all around. Loved Marcus's quote of "On the Serious Side" at ~2:05. Consummate musician!
R.I.P. right hand. B-) Cool as hell!
It was 1981 when I heard Marcus playing for the first time at the Montreux Jazz Festival CH. He was playing with Michael Brecker, David Sanborn and Mike Manieri for 3 hours. Who wondered when he play such things today.
The groove and chord progression is definitely the one from "What is Hip" by Tower of Power. Gotta love that chocolate bass!
... the sax is also playing the melody..
Duh? They are playing "What is hip", is that so hard to hear?
Amazing technique and groove, Marcus is a true master.
The sax player is Alex Han
i've been playing bass for 20 yrs and i still have to say wow!
This is the Music that my uncle tells me to listen to .. hhh Awesome :D
thankyou very much for uploading this; the mechanism of kindness may be the thing that allows us to survive as a species..may not will !
There was just this one part when the dude playing Saxophone sounded like a dying duck
4:31 - 4:38
Thunderous and phenomenal. Marcus Miller, I'm convinced you truly have true genius. I hear it. :)
聞いててWhat is HIP?!?!!!!!????!!!!と叫ばずにはいられない曲

You are correct Sir....
Do you think you know?
I love it Marcus, I'm from the old days of the really funky funk; you got it going on.
Wicked!!
This song is called "what is hip" by Tower of power.
If you love a solid funk out and have not heard of them, check it out.
Great band and the the bass player does some fine work on the origianl version too.
So this is what happens when a band has no guitarist.
Fred Walsh dont be rude :D
xD
+Fred Walsh It gets better? Never knew it was THAT easy, huh.
+Fred Walsh quit being silly a bassist is just a guitarist but playing on the bass side of notes
+Fred Walsh I know, it's awesome hearing every other instrument for once.
Such an influential song. Makes me wanna play all day.
That's how you play the saxophone!
This guy is the world champion of slap bass, straight up.
What is Hip! Marcus Miller the Jaco Pastorius of today!!!!
Have been on a couple of Jazz Cruises where Marcus Miller was playing all 7 days of the week. That's a lot of music and a lot of fun.....k.
Totally loving this. Great Bassist! And that sax...wow
What is hip!?
That drummer completely is on point ROCKS! Mr. Miller, you're genius and you know it. :).

Such precision and timing !!! Marcus my idol !!!
Who is the drummer?
POOGIE BELL
Bravo! Spectacular! How Beautiful...!
I could watch this all day.
Marcus, Notes percolating notes like coffee when the flame is on high and never missing a beat. That is precision bass playing at it's best.
la classe, il est toujours au top depuis des dizaines d'annèes
Great group. They were excellent. Classic tradesman road funk band.
This is awesome!!! Well... I use to play the drums but that love faded and now I'm into the Bass Guitar... This is inspiration for me right here... Had a guitar sitting for nearly a year now so from the starting of this week I've been practicing and I see results already.

this is just amazing, doesn't really matter which music you like
I used to play this song in a band back in the day, and it always had to be the last song of a set because I would be spent after playing it... I wish I had adopted the in and out thumb style he's using here, might have saved me some energy. Marcus is the man..
Marcus rocked the house last night in Rochester!
What a GREAT sax player!!!!!!!!!
One of my all time favorite musicians
This is amazing!!!!!! Great playing by all.
Excelente maestro del bajo, :-) saludos Marcus desde México :-)
My favorite bass player. Dude kills it.
hi dad
I just love how well this man plays with the ashtray on :')
To every young player out there...this is what professional musicianship looks like. Amazing skill from all the players here.
Mike Lord I've been playing for about a year and a half. And I've been studying nothing but this guy, Victor Wooten, and some others.
hell yea, you are on the right path...always keep your mind and ears open to great music.
thanks for pointing this out.. now that you mention it is even more impressive and mind blowing! what a master on the bass!
The drummer does a good job keeping in the groove with Marcus
class and timing to the fullest.
The bass is so funky i can smell it through the computer
This should inspire you to get better instead of discouraging you, it's not a competition it's about having fun and getting into the music.
Compression is right on the line.
Ahhhh damn I love that tone.
so much talent in this video
Classic musicians priceless
Quel regal! !!!!!!! J'adooooorrrrre! !!!!!!!

Marcus covering "What is Hip" by Tower Of Power.
Nice slapping interpretation of Rocco's 16th note stutter groove!!
Great share.
