    Guys!! So glad you're all enjoying these videos - just a friendly reminder - CHord = a grouping of notes played simultaneously, COrd = anatomy like vocal cords, false cords. Just FYI in case you wanted to know the difference.

    All the time I thought I had a wrong technique because I sounded like a chain smoker after I've done False Chord Screaming. But I just put soooo much energy in my screams. I've done it the way - you told me/us not to do it. I screamed with all my Air and pulled my shoulders up. Of course I had not much air left for a whole sentence! Thank you! I thought I need to growl like a Beast but never thought about that all the singers have a Mic on stage and the "LOOK I SCREAM LIKE A BEAST" is show for the Fans/people. A nother TH-camr told in a vocal Video only use 30% of your power. You dont need to be super loud and so damage your chords. This and your Video really opend my eyes and now I hope I will get it! Cheerz!THX for the great Video (:

      You have to do it with relaxed chest and neck, also try louder (but not too loud, just a bit harder until "hurrrr" sound, take care). Or try to mimic how dogs bark - it's a good start. You bark not with words, but rather chest and relaxed neck, but start from a stomach (like you're a karate-man and do a ABS squeeze before they punch you in the stomach), but the sound goes FIRST (don't think to squeeze before the bark, I just explain the mechanical process, better just mimic the sound in relaxed condition). Or imagine that you're a zombie, relax like a half-dead meat and do this deep sound.

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks  7 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      Actually, you will feel a "scratchy" sensation in your throat which is necessary if it's being done correctly. This is because correct "false cord screaming" is done with air friction vibrating the false cords. This friction we should feel as a "Scratchy" sensation inside our wind pipe. However, it should NOT make you hoarse afterward, it should not feel like pain, aching or sharp or strain or gripping. Those types of sensations or anything that makes you hoarse afterwards should be stopped.

Still, I want to become a vocal coach just like you so I can understand the science of this and the anatomy of our voices because I wasn't taught such things, my teachers would only make me learn how to sing but not the mechanism behind the singing. Thanks a lot for this, Mary. This is so helpful, it has the been the first time I am able to produce such noise without grinding the tissues, which is a result of locating (or at least feeling) the false cords and air stream vibrating through them without engaging vocals folds much.
    I have a question, as of now, the noise is loud enough, though it is too airy, hence I am able to enunciate 3-4 words max with a single gulp of air. And, I am actually feeling light-headed after doing some bits (which ofcourse is due to excessive air expulsion). How should I control it without affecting the noise level? I repeat, it is not painful at all, just a slight scratchy sensation which I think is okay. Also, I am pretty comfortable with the diaphragm breathing, just that when I am trying to cut back air, I unintentionally engage my vocal folds, resulting in grinding.
    Does anybody else felt the same and how did you rectify?
    Lots of love from India❣️

    Okay so I tried it and I actually did better than i expected after half an hour or so. One thing I've got to ask though. I have this natural vibrato in my voice (when I sing) and it seems that the simple "noise" I make with the false chords also has a vibrato. Is this logical or am I doing something wrong, I have no pain whatsoever and I can actually make the sound in combination with naming the alphabet, also without pain.

    • @voicehacks
      @voicehacks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really don't know what phenomenon that is! I'd have to hear it! But in singing to get "rid" of vibrato you just squeeze the abs harder to push more air through and it straightens the tone out. Perhaps this would work with the screams? That is if you don't like it...

I notice that after maybe 15-20 minutes, I start to feel a scratchy sensation at the top of my throat, like just below my mouth. It's not really painful per say, it just feels odd and worries me. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

    Not a singer, but my son is. Due to the lockdown, we’ve decided to start a band. He’s more into Radiohead type music, while I’m into the heavy. He can sing pretty well, but at some point, the vocals will have to be more metal. Since he IS an exasperated teen he should pick up on this quick. This is a fantastic way to get the point across.

    I can't tell if I'm doing this right, I get lightheaded and can't really say "we will rise" smoothly, as in you can tell I'm running out of air quickly. I can sing clean with my diaphragm but when I try to do this false chors technique (which I really need to learn, that and fry) I just feel I'm not getting it. What am I doing wrong??

    I need your help if you will...
    I've been trying to learn to scream for give or take 8 months. I first got the false chord technique right, however I took a break from screaming for about a month or two. When I came back, my screams were much more distorted and powerful, however I get hoarse afterwards. Because of this, I've tried to learn fry screams since they are much easier for me to do without hurting myself. BUT, when I try to ease back into them, nothing works, and I really want to keep my vocal chords! (I have been using my diafram)

      Thanks for the comment! In this situation, I'd have to hear you in a more personal setting like a lesson to help you figure out if what you're doing is correct/safe. If you're getting hoarse, something is off a little bit because proper false cord screaming shouldn't make your regular voice hoarse. If you need help, feel free to email me for lessons on Skype at voicehacks@gmail.com

    Hey Mary, I don’t know if you covered this somewhere already, but if so point me there-I want to know how to false chord “yell,” I’ve tried to imitate the sound and had a bad time of it, lol. An example of what I’m talking about is in Conan - Vexxagon right around 4:00. Thanks!

    I just got the really distorted sound that actually sounds like a real scream but after about 5 minutes of enjoying that success I left and came back about 30 minutes later and now I can't do it anymore because the back of my throat burns and I feel pain back there when even just letting out that "exasperated teenage sigh".
    Am I doing something wrong or will I slowly build up tolerance/stamina?
    I feel like I'm doing it right because I've never gotten that sound before but damn does my throat hurt when I try now.

    It's strange because I learned fry screaming first. Fry screaming just makes more sense to me I'm slowly understanding false chord which is making it easier for me to learn this scream

    After long periods of growling I sometimes suddenly lose all the power in my growls and then the growls don't have any sound. Then my throat sort of feels dry , I do drink straight after though, but the same problem will happen seconds later. It's hard to explain it but that's the best summary.

    I actually learned how to do this by an accident. One day I was getting up from my bed and I made a very gravely noise (Mind you, before this I had been trying and trying to get it and do it) and then when I made that.noise I immediately jumped up and ran to my computer to try and do it and I finally got it. For anyone having trouble reply to my comment and I'll do my own tutorial on how I learned

    Hey Mary. I don't know if you still read these comments, but I have a question. I have been practicing false chord screams and I think my technique is right, and I have a sound I like, but I can only hold it for barely 3 seconds before I run out of breath. I learned to fry scream as well and I can do that for about 15 seconds when I use my diaphragm properly. But no matter how much I focus on breath control, pushing from the diaphragm, etc., I just can't break 3 seconds on my false chord scream. I've been practicing for a little while now and nothing has changed. Am I doing something wrong? Is it just a matter of practicing *a lot*? Thanks in advance.

    hey! I've been screaming some months (I don't practice everyday). It doesn't hurt at all, but after and hour of rehearsal (trivium, gojira etc) my voice is kinda hoarse and I can't get highs anymore. Like we have to train on "Hail to the king" first because I can't get high enough after half an hour of screaming.. What am I doing wrong, and how can I work it out?

      Yanis Rios you have to build up your tollarance I used to only be able to do one deathcore but now I can do like 8 or 9 before my voice starts to give out

    • @XxEvilghostxX1
      @XxEvilghostxX1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      absolutely! it's incredible how far regular training can get you in only a couple of months. Now I don't really need to drink that much and I can have Singing (and screaming) lesson for an hour an then screaming non stop for two hours.

    • @voicehacks

      Then it seems like you're doing the work from the throat too much or inadvertently trying to use the vocal cords instead of the other tissues. Watch my breathing for screamers videos and try with more air support. Take it easy if pain persists, stop attempting to scream. Do not continue with techniques that are painful. I also give Skype lessons email: voicehacks@gmail.com for rates & scheduling.
