How to Rescue a Bad Paint Day: Transforming Watercolor Mistakes

- In this video, I set out to create a minimalist watercolor piece featuring simple shapes, lines, asemic writing with ink, and some stencil work. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out as planned. Instead of discarding the failed piece, I decided to salvage it by cutting out beautiful hearts from the watercolor paper. These vibrant hearts can now be used as art prompts, thoughtful gifts, included in cards, or even framed as unique art pieces. Thank you for not ditching this video - I have such a giant pile of "heart paintings", not fails but heart paintings....like they just "wanted" to become hearts from the get-go 😝😍. I'm so thankful your lunch wasn't ruined, and that your heart jar got new friends even though I was not seeing it as a fail. 🧡💛❤ Oh I just saw someone's comment about writing words of encouragement or scriptures on the hearts....made me think of randomly placing one in a mailing, not that we mail much these days but when we do, someone's day might become a little bit brighter!

These hearts would look awesome on a greeting card (perhaps 3 of them lined up in a row with black stitching through them.) Just an idea for all of us who have failed watercolours in our stash. 😊
So happy that you posted this one, Denise. It's very encouraging for us to see that others have stinkers sometimes too, and that those stinkers can be turned into winners if you persevere and stay creative.

I was watching and thinking, “yeah, that’s good. Love the colors” and “yeah, love the lines”. I kept waiting for the fail then I heard you say, “Well that is interesting…” and I thought, “Well, here it comes.” All of a sudden you said it was a fail and we had hearts. As a card maker, I knew those lovely hearts could be used front and center on a card so it’s, as you said, not a fail after all. I’m glad you didn’t delete this as there were great elements in it. beautiful... I have that heart punch too!!! I would make a clay base, glue the heart on, cover with resin... and now you have a charm!!! for luggage, necklace, backback, etc!!! They are lovely...

If the video title didn't include "bad painting day," I would have assumed you didn't like the painting. Your normal exuberance was missing as you created. But it's nice to see that even seasoned artists create things they don't like and then how to save the piece. I just started painting in January and have a large stack of "fails" that I can now repurpose. Thank you.

I like your complete fails. They always look good to me. As you say no paint day is a complete fail. I can hear you saying that as I have paint days that really don’t quite match my expectations. Every painting day is a learning curve for me. Love watching your videos.

i love your little punch idea! i made a tiny frame matte that i use to cut up my fails. takes me from discouraged to thrilled in 5 minutes. every fail has beautiful sections. so much fun to find them

you got me thinking of getting my gel plate out and off loading my stencils onto it for mono- & ghost prints for collage bits.... even crappy paint days leave room for awesome painty papers... and you now have a heart stencil too...

Denise, if you compare the painting in this video to your paintings in your other videos, then yes, this one seems bad. However, if you compare your "bad" painting with my "bad" paintings, then yours looks like fine art. 🙂 🙂I use my crappy paintings to create heart stencils/masks, circle stencils / masks or masks of various shapes and sizes. If art goes bad, have fun making a craft project out of it. 🙂.

I actually did not find it that terrible but I know what you mean when you are not happy with the end result. Right now my problem is a hubby who keeps telling me what colors to paint in (his preference) which are quite different than mine. (*sigh)
