  • Fixing a Ryobi 18 volt battery that is no longer charging properly. I have on had it a few months and only used a few times. In other words it should be working perfectly. It is blinking red whenever I plug it into my charger. It should be blinking green to show that it is charging correctly. I was hoping that it just needed a little bit of a kick start so I repeatedly put the battery into the charger and took it out. After about 15-20 times of this it started charging correctly and has been working perfect ever since.

Freaking brilliant, was in the process of taking it apart and tried your trick and it WORKED! Battery wasn't used for a year. Took me about 15-16 times of popping it IN and OUT before it finally started charging.

Yepp, these batteries are infamous for this issue. There are a bunch of other videos that dive deep inside the pack and explain the nitty gritty details. In a nutshell, the BMS (Battery Management System) thinks there is a problem, so it won't let you charge the battery for safety reasons. Mostly it just creates additional battery sales for Ryobi though.
There are a few reasons the BMS goes into "shutdown" mode:
    1) Overall battery Voltage is too low. (The threshold is approximately 15.0 Volts.)
    2) The BMS detects "unbalanced" cells in the series string. (I don't have any reliable info on the threshold for this. Perhaps 0.25 Volts?)
    3) Over temperature. (This should AUTOMATICALLY reset itself, but I don't have info on the BMS software programming.)
It's fairly easy to remedy this issue though. A quick youtube search will result in dozens of videos that show how to boost the voltage up high enough such that your Ryobi charger will now go ahead and charge your battery. In extreme cases, you need to reset the BMS with a jumper from the "RST" pin to ground for about 10 seconds. Then quickly put it on the charger before the BMS shuts the battery pack down again.

I think you need the green light before you put it in the first time.
    No means no. 😁😁

My ryobit charger is identical, when I put the battery in the red ligh is solid on and the green light on the bottom is slid (not blinking). When I ut in the chainsaw it doesn't work. Not sure what problem is.
