    I was wondering how these are made after seeing some for sale at an art show. Now I know why they cost $500 and more. Lots of hard work and fine tuning. You played it beautifully.

    • @DIYwithUncleCy
      @DIYwithUncleCy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Size and length is determined by the note itself. Draw out the pattern and start by cutting the highest note first. Meaning, cut the slots till you achieve the note you want. From there cut each note a little deeper until you get your octave. There is no set measurements for notes.

    Hi Uncle Cy. Somebody bought me a tongue drum as a present, but I do not like the color. I am quite an artistic person and wondered if I could paint it myself. I would love to spray it and have some metallic element to the paint graduating into different colors. I thought about maybe spraying it with paint, but I wondered what one you might recommend and whether I need to mask up all the vents on the drum so that the paint does not get inside. Can you give me any advise on this and how to avoid it changing the sound. Many thanks, Elaine.

  • @thomasmartinscott

    AWESOME! It sounds as good as some of the expensive ones I've heard. Looks Great, too! Now, I have to go buy a propane tank... see what you've done... Lol. ( I can't wait to get started. You're an inspiration!)

    • @gorillaau
      @gorillaau 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How did you go? I take it that you have tracked down propane tank.

    • @thomasmartinscott
      @thomasmartinscott 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gorillaau Actually, I bought 4 tanks, but living at 7,600ft up in the mountains, I've been using them
      as propane tanks. I do walk by them and tap on them, and the pitch tells me how full they are.

    • @gorillaau
      @gorillaau 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thomasmartinscott I have used that trick myself for larger tanks, those that you can't easily rock. The smaller BBQ size one trick is to pour hot water down a side. The hot water will evaporate off the section that has no liquid gas, leaving a clear line of the liquid gas inside.
      Caveat: I think LPG as we have is the same.

    Awesome...
    Questions
    The more you cut a tongue, the lower the pitch?
    The more you Sand a tongue, the higher you can raise a pitch?
    Tuning the tongues in a star pattern rather than clockwise or counter clockwise is important because every time you tune a tongue it effects the other tongues?
    Did I get this right?

    • @DIYwithUncleCy
      @DIYwithUncleCy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pattern of tuning has little to no effect. I settled on the pattern I used because it is intuitive to use (the notes switch between hands consecutively). But yes longer slots = lower notes and thinner tongues = higher notes.

    • @kittywampusdrums4963
      @kittywampusdrums4963 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed the kids playing hard with them and the note unannealed tangs are softer/might bend easier than if they are annealed then the structure of the metal gets harder. Some peopel say they notice the differenc ein tone but I dont lol. Mostly for metallurgy purposes although if kids aren't banging on them it shouldn't matter :p
