    Well this is a fun one. What interesting things we can do with 20 pound Propane tanks. I used a different editing technique so do let me know if you like it.

    I was wondering how these are made after seeing some for sale at an art show. Now I know why they cost $500 and more. Lots of hard work and fine tuning. You played it beautifully.

      How did you go? I take it that you have tracked down propane tank.

    • @thomasmartinscott
      @thomasmartinscott 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gorillaau Actually, I bought 4 tanks, but living at 7,600ft up in the mountains, I've been using them
      as propane tanks. I do walk by them and tap on them, and the pitch tells me how full they are.

    • @gorillaau
      @gorillaau 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thomasmartinscott I have used that trick myself for larger tanks, those that you can't easily rock. The smaller BBQ size one trick is to pour hot water down a side. The hot water will evaporate off the section that has no liquid gas, leaving a clear line of the liquid gas inside.
      Caveat: I think LPG as we have is the same.

    Awesome video. I have a couple old tanks in my scrap pile. I need to make one of these. Question tho'. I'd need some way of carrying it and preferably being able to play it while doing so. Would it damage the sound quality to weld a few loops around the equator for a leather carry strap?

    • @DIYwithUncleCy
      @DIYwithUncleCy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because of the way this instrument works anything that puts tension on the shell will dampen the sound (or at least in my experimenting it has). So I can only assume that hanging it from loops on the shell would dampen the resonating chamber. However I have not tried that so do not know for sure. It is pretty much a sit and play instrument. They do strange things compared to a regular drum too, If you set it on a hard surface it dampens and doesn't sound good ,I thought this was due to the opening in the bottom being covered, but when I set one on a carpeted floor or the couch (still covering the opening) they sound fine, weird huh.
      Still even not being able to carry and play I recommend making one to play they are extremely fun.

    • @kittywampusdrums4963
      @kittywampusdrums4963 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed the kids playing hard with them and the note unannealed tangs are softer/might bend easier than if they are annealed then the structure of the metal gets harder. Some peopel say they notice the differenc ein tone but I dont lol. Mostly for metallurgy purposes although if kids aren't banging on them it shouldn't matter :p

    Great work man!! Im looking forward to make one for myself. I want to make one on the scale of C major but i dont know the diameter of the notes or the order they should go and im kind of lost there. Can you give me some advice please???

    • @DIYwithUncleCy
      @DIYwithUncleCy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Jose Antonio Casas
      The diameter is unimportant. Make 8 same size figures. Cut the top 1\3 of each. Then pick one and begin cutting the slots down and checking it till you have a C (you want this to be a high octave to start from) the longer the slots the lower the note will be. I use an app on my phone to tune with. Once you get the first note pick one next to it and tune the next lower note. I alternate across the first note making playing it very easy. With that bit of an explanation and the video you should be able to do it. Just be careful when cutting the tank.
