    Floor doing Floor things: 3 times in a row she blows you out of the chair with these amazing endings of her lines and then she finishes you with that haunting scream.

    Several times over the years, I have heard Floor acknowledge that she has the lung capacity of a deep sea diver, and she certainly demonstrates that here! Tuomas's ability to write emotion into his music, and Floor's ability to interpret it for the audience is just unparalleled....this 58 yr old outdoors man feels it deeply, and often with them! I'm just so grateful to know their music!!🤘

    This is perhaps my favorite song of theirs. Interestingly, the original version did not have the effect of this performance. Floor takes this song to a new level.

    Floor's operatic "stabs" (really short horn notes) are called Operatic Onsets, and they are extremely challenging as she has to "stop on a dime". These are actually more impressive (to a vocalist) than the high notes. While the decrescendo in this song was very impressive, my favorite vocal moment was when Floor & Marco did the harmonic Glissando in Romanticide (slide up and then back down full octave). That blew me away!

    • @massivemetalreactions
      @massivemetalreactions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes that blew me away as well. Thanks 🤘

    • @mariodriessen9740

      They're quite easy to count actually. It's 4/4, 4/4, 2/4 (x4). And the 'stabs' are on the 2nd of the 2/4.
      So.... one two three four, one two three four, one TWO!!!
      one two three four, one two three four, one TWO!!!
      one two three four, one two three four, one TWO!!!
      one two three four, one two three four, one TWO!!!
      And then immediately the long flowing melody line. That's what impresses me most. Where does she find the time to breathe between the last 'stab' and the long melody line right after?
      Amazing, that's what it is. Amazing. 😁

    Floor and Marco are storytellers - I think you'll like "Slaying the Dreamer" from the same show. Most of the songs on the decades tour were written before Floor became the lead singer. She interprets all of them and as usual make them her own. Tuomas and Kai are doing suck a great job supporting the lyrics and the other band members, Hell, like always NW is being the unit they are.

    I've been listening to night wish for a while and I've come to one unavoidable conclusion your favorite Nightwish song is the Nightwish song you're listening to at the given time.
    It's like picking your favorite child, they are all precious, and they are all different.
    Be grateful for each one.

    Great thing about Empu and Nightwish in general is that they are all madly skilled, over the top artist. But, they practice amazing control and never really take it over the top. This creates a balanced harmonic and extremely dynamic sound. It is never just about one of them, it is all of them in perfect balance all the time! No one in this band shows off. Ever! They are metal, but they play together like an orchestra.

    For me this is the best performance I've heard from Kai

  • @BrendonChase_2015
    @BrendonChase_2015 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I believe with the time signatures that was Kai messing with you, throwing in a heady dose of Wintersun on & off beat variety. He often manages to fly under the radar bcz he's just so well immersed in the sound, but to me he really stands out here.
    But then Floor.. There's a lovely reportage on her from 2015 with a "classroom" interview where she talks abt the extra studies she did in opera and music theatre after having finished the Rock Academy. I'll provide a link to that mini-documentary. You'll absolutely love it.
    In this song, which is rapidly becoming one of my favourites too, you can clearly see these extra hours put into musical theatre paying off. The one of a kind on stage chemistry between her and Marko also helps. From the get go, Floor shines in her role and acts the part with everything she has, vocal acrobatics, movement, posture, facial expressions, hand gestures.. the works. She really is storytelling incarnate. So the music becomes much, much more than a great metal song and that is why live is always better with Nightwish. You want to see the whole, masterfully crafted performance.
    Such a pity that songs like this one have become near impossible with Marko's departure. So hope that Tuomas will put Jukka's vocals on display in the new songs, perhaps even with some Wintersun-like vocal countermelodies. That would be most welcome! Cheers from Amsterdam! 🤘
    Oh and don't miss this one: "Floor Jansen in Dutch show Reunion (Tampere 2015)" - th-cam.com/video/zRqqma4kWIg/w-d-xo.html Floor doesn't even need to sing to hit you in the feels, big time!

    Evidently this was one of their poorest received songs until Floor came along and raised it to be one of their best. A Nightwish fan from the 90's said that she didn't really like this song until she heard this version. Now she thinks that this is how Tuomas meant it to be and she loves it.
    A previous reactor said that the dissonance you were hearing was because Kai was first hitting on the downbeat and then on the upbeat. Tuomas timing on this one is remarkable bearing in mind the delay inherent between pressing the keys on the keyboard and the sound appearing.

    • @michaelfreeman4218
      @michaelfreeman4218 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The studio version had an ordinary male vocal part without any menace to it (I don't think it was Marco) and didnt the live Tarja era performance rely on it via a backing tape? That wouldn't have helped.

    • @don-o-seven1437
      @don-o-seven1437 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was going to say that this being 1998 and oceanborn, I wonder how Tarja handled all the changes. Seem not so much. Take one on emotional change of a song is Floor’s unbelievable talent. Unmatched by anyone. I will listen to the studio version and look for Tarja live. thanks you for this reaction. Not a song I know much about, but the lyrics are awesome and you detailed breakdown was very much appreciated.

    Every song in this "Decades - Buenos Aires 2018" show is amazing, pure gems. You should do more reactions from this gig. You already did "Slaying the dreamer", you can continue with "Dead boy's poem" (bit slowy paced masterpiece) or maybe "Kinslayer" (more rockish with beautiful Emppu riffs). Cheers from Buenos Aires!!!

    Geek away, we're here for your reaction. LOL
    I love the back and forth vocals, and Kai's drumming, especially the kick.
    Marko's Devil character is amorously pursuing Floor's Mermaid character. She is having none of it, and manages to get away.
    The Buenos Aires show on the Decades tour had a lot of older songs. This is one of them, from the 2nd album, Oceanborn(1998). The original has Tarja singing with guest male vocalist Tapio Wilska ,and had Sami Vanska on bass. Marko didn't join the band until 2001.
    The 4th album , Century Child(2002), is the first to feature orchestra.
    Yes, Troy is playing guitar. He uses PRS, afaik.

    I love how different reactors pick out things I never noticed in the songs. I have listened to this at least 100+ times, and never noticed what Emppu was doing there. Cool!
    LoL so funny you got the feeling of fighting back from just the music. Her character the Mermaid has been fighting the Devil who has taken her and wants to possess her, and they are fighting back to be free. :)

So glad to see a reaction giving it justice - Thank you !!!!!❤‍🔥🤘

  • @TimoArula

    This song is an absolute banger 🤘😎🤘.
    Kai's drumming on this is just crazy ( Kai Hahto "The Human Metronome", or in my book Kai "The Machine Gun" Hahto )!!!
    In one interview Tuomas/Marko said that Floor has a lungs of a dolphin (That long note is 💥)!!!
    And, not many reactors will notice Troy with his guitar and little E-Bow action at the very end. 👍👍👍👍. Well Done!!!
    Plus, she holds the last note (A4) of Nightwish - Ad Astra for 17 seconds (10/6/2022 Sweden Festival).
    If this wasn't impressive enough, I can also add than now she's just one, I mean ONE, second short from equaling Pavarotti's longest belt ever recorded.
    So,....
    Nuff Said !!!!

    I agree with you 100% on this composition and performance. Every member of the band performs like Paganini on violin, as their skills are likened to his being known as a gift from the devil to pull off music at such a high level of technical difficulty. They all do this effortlessly too. I'm left in Awe every single time I watch this performance. It's one of my top 3 by Nightwish. Awesome reaction, thank you for sharing.

    Hello sir, this is one of my favo's too, although ALL songs are special to me. This is not the highest note she sung. IN romanticide she slides up (harmony with marko) up to a F6, which is insanely high. She hits the F6 more often, with a clear pure head sound. In the opera's she sung she often hits the E6 and F6

    I love this song, but only sung by Floor. She brought this song to a whole new level together with Marko, who is the perfect devil in this. You feel the chase in this, they are both such fantastic story tellers. Jukka used to sing in Wintersun, so I hope he'll take lessons at the Floor-academy and we will get to enjoy another strong male voice. Troy improved a lot also. Let's see where this ride takes us. This is one of their best live performances. There are some highs and not so highs in Gabriels list, which is probably is intended. And at some point I agree with that. Because music escalates at some point.

    Floor and Marko, Good and Evil. ☯. Hard to tell Floor's highest note considering she's a Siren.

    The highest note I heard was I think in Viljalied Beste Zangers 2019 or the last note of Phantom of The Opera, also Beste Zangers 2019.

      True, but the money note of the Tampere 2015 Ghost Love Score performance was equally high...😊

    • @athlonen
      @athlonen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lieven2292 The note in Ghost Love Score is a G#5, and that's what she comes down to. In Phantom of the Opera, she's hitting a D6. Now it is argumentative if that is a D6 or an E6, because it depends on what you are going off of. For Phantom of the Opera, the sheet music says that it is an E6. However, Nightwish tunes down either a half step (in the case of Tarja's performance at end of an Era, where the note is, again, according to sheet music, an E6), making the note to the ear to be an Eb6, or a whole step (in the case of Floor's performance), a D6. So you also have to take tuning down into account, but the sheet music still is the final authority.

    Yup, Troy was playing a guitar, using an eBow, which gives an almost violin-like vibe. Astonishing performance, and great analysis. If you want to hear more of Troy using an eBow, check out this beautiful, heartfelt performance from Marko, of 'Kiss, while your lips are still red'. Troy fades in and out on the ebow, giving a lovely, haunting colour to the song. And Marko's vocals....wow!

    I wonder if this Tuomas quote fits for you Mr. MMR: "Music is feelings with sound."
    (Edit) I think I can hear Troy playing his PRS with an Ebow at the end.
    Incidentally, might be YT but the bass and drums, along with the louder passages seem to be hitting a compressor and modulating the rest of the music, might be me though but I haven't heard this before in your reactions.

    Can’t wait till you’ll react to the other two big ones ‘The poet and the pendulum’ and ‘The greatest show on Earth’.. I would however recommend to do a little bit of background research on these two before you get there.

    In my top 4 joint with Dead Boy's Poem from the same show and I have said so many times and suggested this. Floor soaring legato over Marco gritty staccato; Floor's glissando... (yes a decrescendo in the gliss).
    Try Slaying the Dreamer from the same concert, and Dead Boy's Poem if you haven't seen it.
    Edit: a symphony is a musical form. An orchestra is a team of instrumentalists.
    Because some orchestras use the word "symphony" in their name they are sometimes abbreviated (for example the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) may be shortened to The London Symphony). But that's just an abbreviation - symphony is still a musical form not a bunch of players.

    I'm with you, this has long been my favorite Floor performance. As an overall song and performance, it's also up there. The only thing that holds it back from being one of the epics is the short length.

    I think her highest is the very final note of her performance of Vilja Lied on Beste Zangers. You think she's high and then she just ... goes higher?

    This is a pretty big song, much loved! I feel like it's reserved for when you've heard just enough Nightwish to need a reminder that they also go hard...regularly!
    Another song you'll be into is an older one, with Tarja singing (really interesting vocal), and Emppu shredding...from End Of An Era 2005, The Siren.

    Floor really shows her pipes in this song. I love it. That long hold followed by the death scream is so powerful. Floor made something epic out of this song. It is much better that the original studio version. After this version I cannot listen to the studio version. By far the highest note from Floor. I think that was an F6 descending to an A5. The timing is 10/8 or maybe 5/8 I think? Definitely a 10 count. kai's feet are going like an M60 machine gun on full auto.

  • @Secret_Agent_Mark
    @Secret_Agent_Mark ปีที่แล้ว

    After 16:05 (start of the fast piece), they continously play in 8/8 measure.
    But Kai is probably the one missing with your timing perception.
    In the first measure, Kai hits the snare on the beat. In the second one, he hits the snare between the beats. In the third measure hits the snare on the beat again, but he throws in some rhythmic patterns. And finally, in the fourth measure, he again hits the snare between the beat, adding rhythmic patterns and finishing with a fill.
    This is roughly how I see it. I'm in no way an expert, so if anyone feels the need to correct me, please do so.

    The 10/8 time signature is pretty strange, but I guess that's part of what makes it so cool.

      If you refer to the back and forth part of the song, I've always imagined it as the mermaid of the story trying to free herself from the Devil's grip. Melodically struggle and pulling back and forth.
