German Flecktarn Effectiveness

  • In this video we test the effectiveness of German Flecktarn camouflage in a heavily vegetated woodland environment. Like the American woodland and British DPM patterns German Flecktarn has had a long service length with the German military. This video includes scenes that show the patterns use when both concealed with and without the use of vegetation in the environment, as well as what the pattern looks like moving and stationary.

This pattern is more effective in mid-europe (specially germany) because there is more brown in vegetation...

Exactly, the m84 or m96 pattern is working really well here in northern Europe.
And maybe it would work in this environment too.
I like the flecktarn, but unless you stay in the shades it seems a little too dark.
      Just my personal opinion.

Yes, Flecktarn is effective in Central and Northern Europe, because the forests are dark, so the dark green, black and brown blend in well. But there is another reason; the mostly cloudy, overcast daylight conditions, so no direct sunlight in the Central European forests. Therefor no need for the color tan on Flecktarn. There is light green in Flecktarn, 11 % of the pattern, to mimic young leafs.

+John Vejvoda I think its still decently effective here. There is a lot of surplus German Flecktarn here in the U.S. so there's a lot of people that like to see how it looks in the woods on our side of the world.

+Brent0331 I think a lot of people overestimate how dark German forests actually are too. Some patches of it, with Fur and Pine are very dark indeed, but a lot of the deciduous are pretty much the same as they are in the US. The only thing that really makes German forests any darker than American ones is the weather. Even then give me a picture of a forest in the hills Washington State and one in Hesse or Franken and I think I'd be hard put to tell the difference.

The pattern is highly effective in areas where there are pine tree forests, evergreen tree forests, mixed with oak and other leaf trees - the leaves and needles fall to the ground - all these aspects come together here in the South where the pattern lives up to its design.

A few years ago, I served in the German Federal Forces for two years. With my fellow soldiers, I had some discussions about the effectiveness of the German Flecktarn too. The bottom line of these discussions? German Camouflage is way too dark for most environements, especially for forrests in spring time. Just take a look at the scene at 03:17 and you will agree.
But believe it or not, even in many German dark evergreen forrests, the German Flecktarn is too dark. Flecktarn camouflaged Soldiers seen from the distance appear as dark little spots in almost e very location.
However, the camouflage pattern of German flecktarn is pretty good. In order to improve Flecktarn, the composition of colours should be changed sightly to that effect that the black elements are replaced by lighter green ones. Then flecktarn would be an excellent uniform for multiple environments.

Nice video, I knew that German Flecktarn works very good from my 12 year in the German army. And of cause I know the pros and cons about it... As everybody is able to see, in brighter areas it is a bit to dark, but as longe as your are using the shadow areas even when your're walking than it's just perfect. So within the training in German army you will learn how to walk in the forest when the sun provides to much light. The only camo in the world which able to challenge Flecktarn is Multicam! in my opinion...

CADPAT is still my favorite. However a buddy of mine who happens to be German, has this pattern and he literally disappeared in a mixed deciduous/pine environment here in WV. So it is effective. Like everyone else commenting on Brent’s videos, I agree that there is an under-abundance of varying shades of green, in too many military camouflage patters. Only the Canadian Military CADPAT and A-TACS people seemed to have grasped this concept.

Was happy to find this video. I like the pattern and even purchased some surplus clothing to copy it onto some equipment. Based on this research I learned that I need to lighten up the colors some to be more effective in my neck of the world. As you watch the subject is hiding in the darkest part of the areas under observation. Once he emerges it is very easy to see him moving in the lighter areas. If he had stopped there would have still been too much contrast. Lighter it is for me, darker for Germany. Thanks for the effort to produce this video.

Flecktarn is great in darker or shaded woodland, works well during autumn and damp/wet weather conditions. As a summer and open Forrest camouflage it isn't great. But what people need to bare in mind is that the main thing that give you away is movement, as long as you can identify what paths and movement to take to optimise your camouflage any woodland style camouflage would be effective.

Up here in western mass during the fall and right after winter when the snow is gone but it's not green yet this camo really shines. Haven't tested it in the summer yet but I'm sure it'll be good. I'm starting to like it more than m81 woodland.
In fact a couple friends and me were playing airsoft in the local woods. They had to find me and they had one guy on a drone looking for me. I wore my flecktarn uniform and I hid by some fallen pine and hid under some dying brown pine branches. They couldn't find me and one of them got upset bugged out. They hovered above me with a drone a few times and still couldn't see me. The other one found my tracks and he couldn't see me at all until I moved.
The camo uniform is one part of the equation the other is using terrain and vegetation to blend in.

Flecktarn was also tested during the 80´s by the Dutch national research institue TNO and TNO concluded that Flecktarn worked well on the Northern German Plain of Lower Saxony. Which was the operation area of the Dutch Army. The Dutch Army did NOT adopt Flecktarn for 2 reasons:
      1. The enlisted men did not like Flecktarn, because it looked like flower pattern wallpaper.
      2. The generals did not like Flecktarn, because they witnessed WW2 and Flecktarn reminded them of the camo patterns worn by the Waffen SS.

Hi, in this forest we were trained to use natural materials for cover and only walk and act in the shadow. the woods are much darker. You know "blackwood forest" ATB Hans from Germany

I feel like you should do this in the fall or winter to show everybody what our forests look like during hunting season. Overall good showcase, i would prob opt for a lighter pattern with conditions like these. Kryptek mandrake or multicam would be better for this. Winter is when woodland and Flecktarn come out lol.

Nice outfit , I have a shirt they wear like Iron and they blend well in all woodlands types even here in the highland desert it blends pretty good with the dry sage brush and rock the problem with digital filming is the light over shadows everything dark, good video

in germany it's sometimes called Schattentarn, meaning shadow camo. it works best when you stand in the shadow of a tree or structure. it's just as dark as a shadow but has enough color to not stand out as a black hole. at night or dusk and dawn it works like a charm too.

  • @tehOGRE

It does decent, it works better in germany our woods tend to be mixed needle & leaf, theres pretty much always more brown areas.

Hi Brent. Excellent vid again, many state that the flecktarn is for northern european woodland but this camo does not completely match that either and we do have the same woods here (in Holland) too. On excercise I could figure out the german ambush (too far off the natural colours and too dark) while our own dutch was often harder to see. The flecktarn like the brittish DPM is often too dark unless it's washed a lot and has faded.
The comment that says the SS camo is way better is as shown in your other vid absolutely right, only walking around as an army in that pattern in Europe? Not a good idea. The SS left too big a scar in our collective history to ever forget that.

There's a Japanese spinoff of Flecktarn that's a little bit greener that I think would be interesting for you to test out. I had a set back home in Tennessee and I had people nearly step on me when I played around with it.

It's not great in TX but where I live, northern GA, it works very well from Spring through Fall. It's got too much green for winter unless you're near a lot of pine and even then the greens aren't quite right.

I still remember how we loved it when I started in 95 as we were on of the few formations having it. Today it is still effective but not fancy anymore- more than 30 years old. Replacements are planned but the Commandos already use Multicam or phantomleaf

  • @Yoyosten99

I've always described it as woodland camo with more diverse colors and without the massive blotches. On a bright day like this you're kinda noticeable if someone was actively looking for you. I'd love to have this design in a slightly brighter shade.

Through my experience in the service i can say its great for Spring, autumn and wet winter days and Of course its working perfectly in summer.
We usualy wear our helmets with a flecktarn cloth coating, in my company we used leo köhler combat shirts and removed all patches and the
national badge im combination with boonie hats or just the regular hat and a lot of field make up. Then we added some gras bushes and that stuff to ur helmet, gear, weapon etc etc u know.
fun fact we made our helmets that good that a lot of people almost stumble over their or other helmets haha. And yes some dudes lost their helmets for a few minutes.

The Flecktarn worked better than I thought. But it did seem a little darker compared to the lighter green spring foliage. Especially when you hit shadowy areas. Still a pretty cool camo design. I almost wish the United States didn't phase out the old M81 Woodland, as it is such a classic and sexy looking camouflage pattern. I love it!

I feel like you would be more effective with cadpat? The flecktarn seems too dark for your environment, funny enough I live in Canada and feel in the early spring and fall seasons that flecktarn is a more effective camo up here. Camouflage is a funny thing to work with thinking one camo can work all year round is a bad way of thinking and I personally believe every region except a very few require multiple camo patterns to be effective depending on season. Anyways great video brother thanks for the upload.
