I think that mining acolytes with a biophagus (and maybe a primus as well) are probably the best damage dealers we have in both xenocreed and biosantic. Their melee at base is good against chaff, the biophagus lethals and once per game ability makes them decent against elites like t5 termis, and their anti vehicle stacked with a Achilles is pretty good at killing tanks without invulns. The only problem is, once you're facing an avatar of khaine or a wraithknight or any high toughness monster, there are almost no answers in the entire book....
I think the magus could be useful personally. Not attached to a unit, deep strike in turn two out of line of sight and use its ability in safety to give -1 to hit to something big like a tank/knight. Target doesn’t have to be visible m, just within 18”
I look at 9th edition rules for psychic abilities and the riptide nova reactor, compared to what we have now, and I just die a little inside. Shit was so flavorful.
As a tsons player i understand why everyone is upset that psychic is "gone" in 10th edition i had two whole pages of psychic powers in my book that are gone now. Having said that, i had a whole phase of the game to kill a chunk of your army while you just stood there watched and did nothing. What they did might've been harsh but it makes sense to get rid of it from a what makes people feel good point of view.
Welcome to the GSC codex, where we now rely intensely on synergy between character and ridgerunner buffs to hit decently, so some Precision or Anti-tank genuinely cripples and counters our entire gameplan since our units in a void are now incapable of being threats to anything above basic infantry and the lightest of vehicles.
@@Dannyboiii000 GW decided that my 30 Acolytes with hand flamers and mining weapons are no longer legal together so I've got 12 basically unusable mining weapon Acolytes. Jokes on them, I'm buying a printer for all my future modelling needs.
40 neophytes, 25 Purestrain Genestealers, 10 Aberrants, 10 Roughriders, a Rockgrinder, a handful of acolytes, and like 10 characters. I don't know how I would play if I wasn't running Twisted Helix/whatever its called now. I had to paint a lot of Abominants and Purestrains but at least they were all skin and natural armor. Cloth, metal plating, and the sheer color variety on Neophytes, and some lists wanting like 50-60+ would have been the end of me. Comes back to the fact that warhammer points across the board should be doubled.
2x2 Achilles with Heavy Mining Lasers helps you with: - Dealing with enemy Armour. Both due to the potential damage but also by making other units having an easier time dealing damage. - Dealing with Elites. Heavy Mining Lasers have a lot of potential attacks between the D3 and the Blast keyword. And again, helps other units with the AP. - Dealing with Hordes. Outside of the Heavy Mining Laser, with its D3+Blast shots(which against 20 models would be 2D3+8 shots from a unit of 2 Ridgerunners), they also come equipped with a Twin-linked Heavy Stubber. Not what it is best at, but it does a surprising good job all things considered. - Moving around the board. Scout 9" and Movement 12" makes for a very aggressive push on the first turn, and allows for a lot of mobility on subsequent ones. - Scoring. OC3 per model(doubles in Outlander Claw detachment) means that they can push in and remove enough models to score an objective.
Funniest part: if you want to play on achilleses-brood brothers detach are better for that. Just take few am cyclops(25 points each), jackal alphus and you have 6 heavy mining lasers, hitting on 2+ with reroll 1 to hit. For me its simplier and stronger than double oc
I worry about the Ridge Runner. It's my favourite model, but if its our only good one my list will seem like meta spam and will probably see nerfs in the future.
So basically the ridgerunner costs less than th benefictus and is more usable as well? Sounds like there's no logic behind the design team of the rules
The thing I hate most about this edition is how prevalent nerfing a uinit, only to lower its points it. Every codex that comes out this edition will nerf the shit out of some mid tier unit, then reduce the points next balance update. So not only are they worse, you now need to buy an extra box of this worse unit because your army is no longer 2k pts after all the point drops. Its literally the worst of both worlds.
the cheapest russ is good anti-tank + a 'distraction carnifex' kasrkin in a chimera is good fire support, and will be the target of your reinforcements strategem catachans in a taurox are cheap skirmishers and decent at applying the detatchment bonus (and you'll feel no qualms about using the strategem to shoot into melees they're in) scout/armored sentinels w/ lascannons are good anti-tank, and the scout is decent at supporting the rest of your guardsmen indirects can be fun, but it's hard to justify taking them over an achilles ridgerunner. 20 kriegsmen + marshal is surprisingly frustrating to remove from an objective, but it's a bit expensive for what it does.
I've had a few games already with the new GSC. Sorry for the negativity but it's depressing. To do something we might need to spam MSU battleline. AdMech took 1 year to get fixed. I was expecting great codex and all we got was poor quality from GW. Sad.
Is the male magos being removed? noticed you can only get him through the box that includes the patriarch etc. He is one of the best models in their range.
The biophagus has some very silly melee rules. In biosurge he can activate his super mode and have 5 attacks anti infantry 2+ ap 0 (1 with ridge runner) and damage 1d3+3. Biological warfare indeed. Give him +1 to wound vehicles and your opponent may start to sweat a bit.
random question, but as someone who is interested in starting 40k with genestealer cults, are there any reccomendations for how to start? im thinking about getting the kill team, painting that, then seeing if i can get the combat patrol? (also, are there any good 3rd party models that can work for genestealer cults?)
If there are any of the old combat patrols left, buy them. The kill team is also good, but that combat control had an hq, your base line troop, an elite troop, and a transport that could be built as a tank. It was basically buy as many of these until you're sick of infantry, kitbash the extra magus into something else or throw them away, then buy whatever you think looks cool. It was the best value of ninth edition
People recommending the old combat patrol are correct but I'm going to chime in and say if you can get the battleforce its also a great deal. Also the new combat patrol while not as good as the old one is still a great pickup if you are brand new and dont have those models yet.

Next data slate: Ridgerunners go up to 150 pts each, no further changes seen as necessary.
Seriously, they change points like they have never heard of survivorship bias
What are you talking about ... Everything else will get a 10% points increase because fuck you gsc fans
The Magus to me proves getting rid of psychic was a stupid move. I want my powers back GW. Psykers are boring now

The more I look at GSC the more I believe that it would take 3 years to paint a 2,000 point army.
I did it. Then GW decided my army was actually only worth about 1500. Jokes on me

Can we finally admit that the GSC codex is not a great codex?
It's going to take until 11th edition for me to afford, build, and paint a full force so I'm not terribly vexed.

Best and toughest aren't really the same thing. Arguably what makes a unit good in GSC is being cheap, and having utility.
