The Nintendo M82 is cleaned up but it's still broken. This Trash to Treasure restoration very nearly ended up as nothing but trash. Discovered in a disgusting state by GingerHippyGaming it's a miracle that we rescued it and today I hope to finish the restoration.

Randomly stumbled on this channel last night watching a video about the Super Grafx. Then watched Part 1 of this Trash to Treasure this morning. What a surprise I got when Part 2 dropped as soon as I finished Part 1. What a wild ride this was! Congratulations on your new inclusion to the museum!

If your museum runs on ad revenue and patrons, you sure seem to be working on a wobbly financial base. The internet is a fickle thing.
I would advise investigating some more stable income. Just to ensure all your effort isn't lost at the mercy of TH-cam or something.

@@the.real.a-volpeagreed. Would you want a glorified NES with a game riser card switcher, or an arcade or pinball game at the same price point. For myself the NES is way way lower in value.
Very fair. That 7 - 10k is only applicable to an auction setting. 5k for a pistine working machine in a private sale makes more sense.
I was more Sega than Nintendo, but this feels very much like a museum worthy addition to the cave. Great to see rare items get the care they deserve.

I still think it's ridiculous that the owner wanted 3 thousand pounds for a unit covered in bird feces that was in the bin and about to be thrown out. It had no value to him until he found out what it was, then he wanted a small fortune for it, despite is being a mess and you doing all the work to make it worth anything. I still think that's greedy and slimy, but I'm also happy that you were able to make an arrangement that was satisfying to you (which is what matters) and get this amazing artifact somewhere it can be appreciated. For you to raise half of the funds required to play for that M82 is truly amazing. Such a heart warming story of a machine that, from your context, truly is indeed a trash to treasure definition of itself. Well done securing it for the cave.
Not going into specifics of your situation, but where I live, when something is “binned” it means you no longer have legal ownership to whatever is thrown away. I love that things panned out in your favour, with a mighty restoration. It was a win for us all, regardless of circumstances!
I will probably never see the cave in person, but I support the show all the way from America. I let all the commercials play all the way through. The system is finally in it's correct home

As someone who restores 8 and 16 bit consoles on the side I would say you got a pretty good deal. The market for anything of this era of gaming has gone crazy in the last handful of years. Even machines for parts have gotten way more expensive. Great video as always. I hope to visit the cave someday but at least I get to see the awesome job you are doing via youtube.

It's great, I went over to the UK from Australia, suggested a tour around Wales to the missus, which she thought was a great idea and ended that tour at The Cave. Win!
I love it when the problem can be narrowed down to a bad logic IC. Easy to troubleshoot, easy to replace. Once things start going to ASIC and FPGA, it's much harder to diagnose and repair. Also, the pins on the cartridge slots are long enough you probably could propagate the IRQ fix to each of the cartridge slots using a wire-wrap tool.
The 12-socket board for cartridges is the wildest part of this thing.
All vintage consoles should have a peripheral like that!

I'm so very happy that the M82 ended up joining the collecting in the museum where it can be maintained and enjoyed by a lot of people.
The M82 feels like the compact cousin of the Play Choice 10 and seeing it restored and fully working AND part of the cave makes me so happy.
It was less compact in the big gray wedge of a display cabinet I saw them in back in the day when my parents went through Sears(apparently one inside the big gray wedge sold for fifty grand a little while back).
Also arguably less profitable than a PlayChoice-10. No quarter slot, after all, but there WAS a rack of cartridges to buy and take home near it.
As someone who watched part one of the "Poop Nintendo" saga.... I'm glad to have helped you put that now-lovely machine in the museum. That front panel takes me back to walking through Sears with my parents as a kid. I don't remember what games they had in the demo unit, other than Kid Icarus, Metroid, and Super Mario 1.

I'm not in the least surprised your last video went gangbusters, but I don't think it's the video itself. I think the hard work you've put into this channel is finally paying dividends, and such viewing figures from now on will be a regular occurrence.
I'm an 80's kid so I still remember playing games like Battle Chess, Metroid, and Mega Man on the original NES.
If you find a Porsche and have no interest in restoring it, but want half of the full restored price, then you’re crazy. He should’ve gotten 500 and been happy for it. The fact he was willing to let history die for money just blows my mind.
I think this is one of the most beautiful gaming units of all time. Absolutely gorgeous setup.

Great second part, delighted the Museum was able to make it a part of its continual history for rarities like this. Not being a huge NES fan myself, I can appreciate its existence. And sure it will bring many great memories back to those who remember being 8-10 again. Great work Neil and the amazing Holly
Just got suggested this video but now have to see part 1. So glad to see something like this restored and in a museum ratherthan sitting in a collector’s storage room to be tossed in the trash when the die or resorting the cycle by another collector.

I am so happy that the owner wasn't asking an insane amount. Considering what similar systems go for and depending on the state they are in. But to hear that a large chunk was paid by TH-cam views and the ads is even better. It's just so important to have such a system in good working order and accessible to the public. Obviously we should not forget about the systems restoration by you guys and indeed it's future upkeep. I think every ones a winner on this wonderful project. Happy Christmas.

I swear i used one of these before, back around 1990 - 1992 about, and it was a one time thing ever seeing anything like it. I was just in the doorway section at a department store, waiting for my mother to finish up, and there was this gaming setup not like a usual arcade cabinet or anything I'd seen before. This being around 30 years ago it's hard to say for certain but i believe this is what i saw. I thought it was so odd seeing NES games instead of the typical arcade, so i played Mario 3 until it was time to go.
If this really is what i played on then i consider myself sort of lucky, i didn't know then that it would be my only opportunity to use something this rare.
What a delight! I'm so pleased this could be restored and preserved for future generations!
As someone who works every day restoring, modding and customising retro consoles I absolutely loved watching you restore this treasure (albeit through envious eyes 😊).

What a satisfying repair on that controller board, nice work Neil. Glad you managed to reach an agreement in the end. I would have felt bad asking for a couple of hundred, but it takes all sorts I guess.

Just stumbled across part 1 and now this part 2 of this video, was blown away by all the hard work and love to restore this! I've been a NES fan since the mid 80's, so this really warmed my heart and the fact it was almost paid for by just the viewers watching such an amazing edited and well narrated video! Then the icing on the cake was on clicked on your website and found that your museum is in Stroud, where my one daughter lives, i'm so going to book a visit and bring her along.

As much as I like keeping everything original, you made the right call with replacing the power supply.
Thanks for being so open about how you managed to acquire the M82 :) As for the price, your comparison with automotive barn finds was perfect; it's worth what someone will pay for it. Also, there's basically no competitive market for these so the seller can pick and choose - they don't have anything to lose (or invested) so it's no skin off their nose if you walk away.

What a great cabinet. I remember playing on something very similar to this when i was a kid. There was an electronics store that had one setup. It would actually go on my own, just to play the games, and i would stay until they kicked me out :)...But i would be back once or twice a week. Great memories.

I haven’t done a console since Intellivision - I went from that straight to my C64 and never went back to consoles. That said, I’m *so happy* that viewers and Patreon supporters allowed this to happen Neil! What a great find, save, and overall story. It’s stories like this that keep visiting The Cave on my bucket list! Keep up the great work!
I am so happy this happened. I see myself as an archivist of old stuff, none as amazing as what you got there, but still, one day someone else will cherish it and i like to think, that if it wasnt me, it would have been destroyed, because quite a lot of the stuff i have does come from "destined for the bin".

Please keep, up the good work, I use to work at "TOY'S R US" In the united states had this system to advertise the games we had, and hard as it is to say this we use throw lot this stuff away when wasn't used any mores. that being said thank you this brings back my child hood seeing this machine again.

Congratulations on securing this for the museum. I think that the price was very fair, and the way in which you raised the funds was perfect.
Seeing those NES boxes sitting in the front window, getting destroyed by the sun, made my eye twitch uncontrollably for some odd reason. 😆 Additionally, an excellent trick to remove some of the oxidation on the game cartridge contacts is to just use some IPA or deoxit.

Exactly. My Dad used to buy electronics from the dump that appeared to be broken. He'd fix them up and sell them for a nice profit.

Great couple of videos. Glad to see that beat up old machine ended up in the perfect set of hands to keep it entertaining the masses for years to come.
As a museum piece, the wire fix to the single cartridge slot is arguably better because it preserves the fact that it predates the design that allowed for the MMC3, but you can still use one slot to allow for “modernized functionality”.

It always makes me sad to think how much cool retro stuff has been thrown away. Over here most Australians don't cherish their stuff that much. 😞One of my friends, friends owned a Video store, and they threw away 1200+ ex-rental games (Master System, Megadrive, SNES and NES), adding "It felt good to get rid of that junk". 😞
I had no idea those M82s were worth that much. I was expecting a few hundred dollars American. I remember every store that sold Nintendo games in the 1980s had one.

I'm one of the people where a random video about restoring something I remember seeing as a kid turned up in my recommended videos and had to watch it. So glad I did as well.
Regarding the price, it's worth what someone will pay for it..... that's all there is to it. If you feel the price was worth it after the work you put into it, and the other party was also happy then thats all there is to it.
When you say the amount you paid, was that considering the cost of the restore on your part?
I have to admit, much as I was never really an NES person, that does bring back memories and the results are a credit to your dedication.
Thanks! The cost of restoring was mostly my time, which I dedicate to making these videos anyway as I’m lucky enough to do this full time in the week and run the museum at weekends. That’s not to negate my own time, but if it wasn’t this it would have been a different video. Overall though I’m delighted with the outcome

I'm glad it all worked out, I still have good memories of getting chased out of toy stores as a kid after skipping school to play the latest games on the M82. If only my parents had bought me a NES!
I think you paid exactly what it was worth to you . When we buy these nostalgic items it really strikes a chord deep within us . Depending on how deep the cord will dictate what something might be worth to you . Well done on saving that piece of history!

I had a Love/Hate relationship with the M82. Sears had one that had the most up to date games in it but it always felt like you could only play for a few seconds and get nowhere on any game. That's obviously what it was built for!🙂
