Is Any Of This Practical? $6 vs $70 Mini Brass Planes for Sharpening Pencils

  • Really I just wanted to do another pencil drawing, and it seemed like another good opportunity to dig a little deeper into the weird, wacky world of mini brass planes.
I made another video recently about the Høvel plane by Makers Cabinet which is $70 ( • How to Waste $70 on a ... ) and after that someone pointed out to me that I can get small brass planes from Harbor Freight for way cheaper, and so I thought they deserved a look after I railed on the Hovel for being so expensive. Also I wanted to go back to the expensive one since it became apparent to me that I had misused it slightly in the previous video and it needed another look.

Hey Peter, brass is used in tools like planes and set squares because it's cheap and easily machined. It also doesn't rust, and is not magnetic.
Other steels and iron is harder machined and can rust or degrade over time... Stainless Steel is expensive and hard cut and machined...
Nice video as always, thanks for sharing 👍

Often with planes (especially cheaper planes) they will need a bit of work to get them into working shape.
For sharpening pencils, the thing you really need to worry about is that the iron (the blade) is perfectly flat on its back side (the side without the bevel), and that it is, of course, razor sharp. Flattening the iron is really simple, all you do is glue a piece of sandpaper to flat pane of glass with some spray adhesive, and then sand.
I’m pretty confident that if you flatten and sharpen the iron (and I mean really sharpen it), those $6 planes will work just as well as the høvel.
Moreover, the høvel is intended to have blades replaced as they dull, like an x-acto. According to their website, a set of 10 replacement blades is $4 plus shipping. While this isn’t a ton of money-especially for a set of 10-it means that with the høvel, eventually you are going to have to pay more money to continue using it. With the Harbor Freight plane, you can just keep sharpening it. Sure, ~eventually~ you will have to replace the blade, but that will take years of constant use, and at that point you could just buy a whole new plane, at $2 more than the cost of a replacement blade set for the høvel.
This is all to say that I think, with the proper care, the cheap planes could do just as well with the høvel, for significantly less money, both up front, and in the long term.
ALSO, if you want to learn more about caring for planes, and woodworking in general (especially for beginners), Rex Krueger’s channel is a fantastic resource. Here is the link to one of his videos, where he walks you through the process of setting up a cheap plane: th-cam.com/video/OrMQrKn61kA/w-d-xo.html

N D do you think a regular wood plane from the hardware store would work? I’ve never tried.

  • @JtsTheDaneAndCrab
    @JtsTheDaneAndCrab 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I say this from a novice woodworker.
With planes, and apparently also "pencil planes" you get what you pay for. You mentioned that the wood of the cheap planes seemed roughly cut and you are right. As someone who enjoys using completely wooden planes, I cringe at the condition of the wood, and the holes the blades are supposed to fit on. Especially the plane in which the blade is all the way to the front. I cannot see a possible use for that kind of plane, as the "block of material" in front of the blade helps create a level surface.
In terms of the question, "why is it all made of brass? For the weight? To look nice?" Brass is often referred to as the "poor man's gold", hence brass is more attractive than stainless steel.
Thank you for the video and have a nice day!

Almost any blade can be kept sharp by honing it. The secret is a piece of Vegetable Tanned Leather glued to a board (a Strop). Using the flesh side, you can pull the blade over the leather to maintain almost any steel cutting edge. Using compound can make it work a bit better. The other secret is to find a way to hold these tiny blades so you can strop them 30 or 40 times in a consistent angle. Those tiny little brass planes probably need the blades sharpened. (look where you got them). As an example, I have an Olfa knife for cutting leather. I strop the edge before every use. I have not had to break the blade off in 2 months. A leather strop for any cutting edge is terrific.

I use these planes for fine detail work. The one with the blade at the front is a 'bullnose', gets right into corners. The one angled at 90 degrees is a 'scraping plane for fine scraping of surfaces. The last one is a standard angle plane for regular wood planing. They are indeed functional, with tweaking. They're for crafts work. Sometimes they are called violinmaker's planes.

The mini brass planes is for wood work I believe, and it's to crave off on a flat surface so I'm not sure if they are really a sharping tool for pencil

Hey Peter! I agree streaming is so different! I hope you consider doing streams on TH-cam, I believe you should try doing a critic of art work in a live situation. You could ask viewers to submit pictures or just do more reviews of museum art work! There is so much public domain artwork that you can just chat about, maybe you can visit a local studio and just enjoy yourself! I hope you enjoy your time with your viewers. I know we enjoy our times with you!

I think the only reason for it being so expensive is that it's all a solid piece, meaning you can't just assemble it you have to fully machine the whole thing in consecutive steps one at a time, where as the harbour freight ones are of a much simpler design, with flat pieces of brass attached to wood that can be mass made and then quickly assembled.
Also thanks for the idea I'm gonna get some if those planes!

Hi Peter I'm a joiner/carpenter so I use many types of plane in my job and it takes a bit of time to hone your technique. If you don't mind me saying you seem to be focusing on the lead sharping rather than just smooth strokes. 70 dollars compared to a plastic Chinese sharpener or scalpel seems dear but, persevere and I'm sure you will be happy with your choice.

Kudos for giving it a fair shake. Something based on a razor blade that is cheaply and easily available would seem more practical to me or maybe a pocket plane although it's hard to find one that's not the cheese grater style (surform). Although to be brutally honest that seems like adding another layer of complexity to my life without much return on investment.

I'm currently trying to work on better sleep habits. So far i'm 4 days into a regulated sleep schedule. It's hard to keep to but i think it's a good thing.

I imagine the factory edge on those little plane irons leaves something to be desired too. I've found that even cheapo edged tools can suddenly become really useful when you know how to sharpen. That said, I'm still not sure plane-type pencil sharpeners warrant the high prices when one can opt for a small, sharp knife instead.
There's a Kiwami Japan video where he actually goes through the trouble of not only sharpening the little blades on an ol' fashioned pencil sharpener, but he actually re-does the heat treat in his kitchen. Quite impressive.

I used to work in a city maintenance shop that had a whole tool magicksing department. I still think most of the repairs was done with alchemy but it does show that if there's a will there's a way to sharpen a razor blade.

I agree with you, that the expensive brass planes are not the best way to sharpen pencils, if you restrict yourself to pencils that have to be sharpened. On the other hand, I discovered that I don't particularly care for sharpening pencils at all. To that end, mechanical lead holders are FAR superior to any wood-cased pencils. I've been writing Blick Art supplies and Prismacolor trying to convince them to offer their colored leads in a size that fits a standard mechanical lead holder (preferably 2 mm), to both save on trees and make it so that you don't spend all your time breaking soft color leads in something like the Prismacolor Premier line. I seriously don't plan on ever buying another wood-cased pencil in my life.

$70 buys a real block plane! That can also be used for making wooden things. Needs to be sharpened often though. Knives with disposable blades are usually quite hard/brittle compared to blades meant to be abused and resharpened (e.g. pocket knife, chisel, plane). The disposable blades stay sharp longer when cutting abrasive things like pencil graphite (clay) and recycled paper. Doesn't take much to sharpen all these things, but if you'd rather be drawing the utility knife is perfect.

“I don’t wan’t to be just a pencil hipster” while holding a $70 solid brass pencil plane he bought for his asmr drawing channel. Glad he instantly recognised the ridiculousness of the statement. And peter what you want is a toymakers plane, I think it’s a number 101* ? I will dig one out and send a photo.

Hi Peter.. I found the Veritas Miniature Low angle Block Plane way better than the little cheap brass ones, I got it for half price on ebay (in UK). I love it. It stops me breaking the pencil point with my pen knife and I can shape the lead with it too. I have hundreds of pencils, I'm a total pencil freak. THe angle of the blade on the cheap brass ones was too large, and kept digging into the wood of the pencil without shaving it.

Oi! I love that dwaring Peter. I like that you seem to be using a lot of black fill ins\bgs in the art you do lately. I think it givrs the piece so much interesting depth. Hope your bike ride was joyous. Proud you are developing good habits Peter.
BTW Happy Belated Birthday wishes to you! Don't worry - the 30s decade is a very learned decade in that I believe it is when you make a lot of self discoveries and put away many useless things that hinder your life. In my 30s I had the guts to make some very positive changes to myself and my family. Just saying. Mk - Sandman summons me. Seeya soon. Oh! Yep, chatting once in awhile on TH-cam would be so cool. 😎 Sweet offering of yourself to those of us who have grown to love your channel here. ❤

i saw a video covering this plane by adam savage before watching your first video... and if u havent checked out their channel yet I'm sure u would find it satisfying btw. While there is a brand premium, it is more so the metalwork itself that makes the object expensive. it takes a lot of skill to make something like that

I used to draw a lot when I was a kid. Pencils were my favorite, however there was a long period in the 90s when you could not get a decent pencil sharpener to save your life. Even pencils had flakey wood and brittle lead. It contributed in no small way to me becoming more of a musician instead.
