    The set of planes I bought aprox 8 years ago for $8 are still working great. YES, the planes need some work, but that is to be expected for the price. I use them for (obviously) small needs but they are PERFECT!

    I've had a set of those plames for years and even built a set of new blades for them from better steel. The ones that come with them, like any blade, will take a great edge but not hold it and then need to be resharpened. other than that they have been ideal. The little bullnosed plane is great on cleaning up rabbets and things where you need to get up into a corner. The srcaper is handy on piees of inlay whee a card scraper won't wok and I like the little block plane to chamfer small part edges that a block plane might damage.

    I have had those exact Harbor freight mini plans for some years (7+?) once i flattened the bottoms and sharpened them up they work great.
    I must admit i have purchased multiple sets and radius-ed the bottoms for different things basically created a mini set of rounds. hey for 4 bucks a plane, it was easier than making my own

    I've had that set of planes for a few years and really like them. The main issue was putting in the work to get the bottoms flat, rounding the sharp edges, and sharpening the blade.

    On the planes - I bought mine to specifically sharpen my carpenters pencils. Many use knives of some sort - or chisels.
    Other use - as needed.

    The shutter speed for moving car problem is kinda interesting from a mathematical perspective. You know how far away the road is, what angle it is relative to the camera, how big a license plate and its letters are, and a general good idea of the upper limit of how fast you expect the car to be going. Then you have camera specs like the resolution and focal angle. From that you could hypothetically figure out in a given amount of time how many pixels of smear you could have in the image if the car is going a certain speed. Geometrically you can approximate how many pixels worth of smear would be acceptable so that each letter is still readable.
    Completely impractical to figure it out this way when it is really easy to experimentally test and I'm definitely not going to do the math right now, but a fun thought experiment nonetheless.

    Hi Lynne, It looks as if you live in a country setting with a single lane road, the speed limit might be about 30 MPH but knowing drivers, they will be speeding unless you have a sharp bend in the road through so your camera speed will have to be quicker to catch the cars. The birdhouse idea is a good one unless a bird takes a fancy to it.

    I would think that since it is black, you are absorbing max heat from the sun. If it were white, I would think it would absorb less and not get so hot. Not sure how much though - that would be a fun experiment! Point is mute though if it's going to be in a birdhouse. :) Also, bought those planes a while ago and they do work well as long as you sharpen the blades.

    I'm unclear on the goal to read license plates - is that something you were using just for testing as a benchmark of quality, or an actual goal of yours? If that's the goal, what's the reasoning?

    • @HyperactiveNeuron
      @HyperactiveNeuron 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I assume so but from a security standpoint it makes perfect sense. How many has station camera shots have you seem that were absolutely useless? It's like the only reason the police released it is because the person was a blurry blob that had clothing on and hoped the public would eat someone out. When I lived in Nashville a house was broken into and the owner happened to be a security specialist who had their property outfitted high speed HD cameras. The cops had the their before they released the video because his face was caught clearly by like 6 different cameras.

    • @DoubleD72
      @DoubleD72 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HyperactiveNeuron None of what you just said had anything to do with her question. The person in this video or ANYONE who gets a surveillance camera is not only looking to get faces but the make and model AND License Plate numbers. lot's of times when a home is broken into someone, You or a Neighbor has footage of the Robbers driving away. or driving past while scoping the house out. that is why she is interested in being able to see the License Plate.

      I'd be curious if the camera, with enough range to see the car coming, could both estimate speed (by change of position from frame to frame) and read a license plate. Imagine having a display on a sign like this that said, "License Plate XYZ1234 Recorded Speed 38mph." Have a slow children and 25mph sign conspicuously placed near this. Even if the information was never sent on to police, it might make people think extra hard about speeding in a residential area.

      Hi Robert, I had a similar situation with a neighbor. A friend built my post out of a Chevrolet 454 engine crank and 2” pipe. We set the post 2ft deep into the ground with 2 80lb bags of cement. That post never moved but his bumper did.
      Also had kids that liked playing baseball tag with my mailbox. I bought two mailboxes - one very large and one regular sized. One fit into the other. I used cement as a fill between the two boxes and let it dry. A few days later I found the flag bent on the outer box but never had another issue with my mailbox post or my mailbox afterwards.

    • @davidshearer567
      @davidshearer567 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to be a mailman. I had many customers who had this (and similar) problem(s) over the years.
      Build a brick mail box structure and fill it with cement. A car could crash into it and the mailman would still be able to deliver your mail.
      I had one customer who had issues with kids driving by smashing the box with a baseball bat. After the 5-6 time he got tired of that and set up a box filled with concrete. A few days later a kid showed up at his door with a broken arm and his parents wanting him to pay for it. He repeated the incident to them - "1. you were hanging out of a moving vehicle 2. you were swinging a baseball bat (a deadly weapon) while hanging out of the moving vehicle . 3. you were striking things from a moving vehicle. 4. you destroyed a mailbox (a felony). Then asked, "are you sure you really want to pursue this?" they walked away and he pulled the concrete filled box down and never had a problem with that again...
