Yes, testing this ability is mostly to cross the Spirit out instead of confirming it, exactly for the reason you mentioned at the end. RNG. You can smudge any ghost other than Spirit and it still might not hunt for 180 seconds too because of RNG, even though it could have hunted after 90. An advice to new players is, don't usually assume just because it only hunted after 180 seconds after smudge that it is a Spirit. If it does it twice or 3x times, then the chances it is a Spirit is extremely high, so you're free to guess. It's useful because, if it hunts after less than 180 seconds after smudging it, then you can freely cross Spirit out.
Same thing with the Demon. The Demon can hunt after 60 seconds after smudging it, instead of the regular 90. If the ghost hunts after less than 90 seconds, you can freely guess the ghost is a Demon.
Just a final warning, beware of The Mimic. Always do a test at least 2 times since it can copy any ghost's abilities, and it will change which ghost it's copying after 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

All good tips! Mimic will also always give an orb as evidence, even on no evidence custom difficulty.

Ah Tanglewood. That is where we all start. You will get it eventually. Maybe try Willow and see if it is easier for you. It is also a small map.

Dont worry, you will get it! You just have to get a consistent flow of
1) finding the room
2) setting up equipment
3) testing it out
Bring a friend if possible, I find the game more fun online

It works on any difficulty, including custom.
