To be fair the pointlessness of stealing cars didn't start in this game. It started in saints 4 when you just become a super hero/neo figure and ALL forms of transport just became pointless....
pointless, but i still found enjoyment in driving around town with a souped-up sportscar i stole from an npc that i upgraded with a quick trip to rimjobs.
just because it's pointless doesnt mean it isnt fun. the cars are fun to drive in saints row 4, just overshadowed by the superpowers.
Cars aren't completely useless in SRIV, you can use Telekinesis to throw them at the enemies.
tbh. cars are still fun to drive, even when they are made obsolete with superpowers.
Being able to turn off the superpowers made it fun to play again

It is an alternate universe, Yahatzee. At the end of Saints Row Gat Out of Hell, Johnny Gat is presented with one of 6 wishes by God. If he chooses to remake Earth (after it was blown up in SR4), God will fix it, but have to change things around as he couldn't remake the "exact" world. So Gat became a cop and ending up catching the notorious Persephone Brimstone, who we now know is a former L.E.G.I.O.N. member turned M.A.Y.H.E.M. leader.
The Silhouette of Persephone in that ending is Satan's daughter Persephone if "The Boss" was male, but the silhouette matches "The Boss" if you played as a female character in SR4.
This is the obvious occurrence that people seem to ignore because they aren't fans of the saint's row series or are just too lazy to do their research dood.
Yeah I find the way that saints row and this tripe are connected to be kind of pointless well i suppose they needed a cool pre order bonus and they used pierce to try and prove that connecting the games wasn't just a ploy to make a cool pre order bonus

Trump wanted to build a wall, the leader of the saint's just want's to blow all the fucking walls down and that shit is legit dood.
It's technically false, since the Saints Row Boss also turned the White House into an absolute madhouse and ran the country into the dirt, but while Trump's WH is just lost in chaos and corruption, the Boss's WH featured strippers, pet tigers, and punching lawmakers in the crotch. So, still a corrupted mockery of the office, but the difference is that the Saints Row Boss has competent people doing all the actual work for them, while Trump employs only the worst scum of humanity and personally demands that everything Obama accomplished be torn down.
Well of course. Trump is living proof that any US Presidential candidate that promises to make the Establishment his bitch (i.e. punching lawmakers in the crotch) will win regardless of any other factors. The Saints Row Boss would be President 4 Lyfe.
The only reason you don't see more President Trumps is that the Establishment can't get their money's worth out of real populists (i.e. lawmakers getting punched in the crotch instead of trickling down the bribes).
If you think about it most legit gangsters and people who commit crimes (who aren't totally tapped in the head and just want to kill people) do so because they never fit in with societies norms, had bad educations and were poor, they were forced into those situations but if put into power would it work? they understand people way better than rich bureaucrats, the famous and with their life experiences they would understand what the real problems in their country is, now I'm not saying there wouldn't be some issues but honestly speaking I see a lot of people in power over the years, all well off and always making life better for themselves and worse for the poor, where I am the cops don't even do their jobs outside of television show's -_- so frankly why not? it honestly couldn't get any worse, at worst it would just get as bad as it's gonna get faster dood.

Just wanted to tell you that I appreciate the heightened intensity on the phrase "suicidal level of boredom" with regards to the Overwatch Wiki. You alright, Yahtz.
It is actually based in an alternate dimension. Remember "Gat Out Of Hell"? It had several endings, one of which remade Earth in an alternate timeline. This game follows the alternate timeline, hence why Pierce is the leader of the Vice Kings, Gat is a police officer (before being put in a coma), and Oleg (the big Russian guy from SR3) is alive and turned into a super soldier for Russia.
Basically, the developers went "Fuck, we can't make a sequel... Wait a minute, didn't we make an open ended DLC? That'll do! Let's pretend Saints Row one to four didn't exist, we'll run off of that idea!". So yeah, Julius never betrayed you, "The Boss" doesn't exist, aliens never invaded, Earth never blew up, and nothing of any of the four previous games happened.
However, one highlight of the game: I'm pretty sure one of the bad guys is based on Justin Bieber. So there's a boss fight we'll all win with a good portion of vigor and psychotic glee.
I'd watch "Capey and The Llama".

I wouldn't, it's just 3 seasons of dilluted main character tropes disowning the source material by bumming around at home and trying to go for a "relatable" feal.
The Spin-off with Cowboy Tim and Bearcrotch however is probably the most entertaining and faithfull substitute for a saturday morning cartoon, complete with a noticeably low animation budget.
Still waiting for Saints Row 5: Saints in Time. You can't say the franchise has nowhere to go when they slapped us with that massive time travel cocktease at the end of SR4.
that could be fun... the saints mess around in time so much they actually break it... you could have a big open world where each section of the map is a differnt time zone. your trying to fix it in your own saints way while fighting/taking over factions in each time zone while trying to get away from interdimensional time police. Stealling a stagecoach in the wild west to out run the evil black knights and lead them into an ambush by a trex in the prehistoric jungle stuff like that would be awsome

Thats the thing it could be as fun as it might be to play a sly cooper thieves in time type delio thats not what i remember from saints row the same saints row that taught you a moral lesson at the beginning that if there is a big guy bulling you you need to do something about it, and at the second game taught you to stop harassing the bully because you became the bully yourself. how would such great lessons be incorporated in the next game where you jump to random timelines? do they even care? idk and idc

Yeah, it had it's issues but overall it was still fun to play and there were other comment's as you drive and walk around the world so it does have some more to it but it was definitely done on a budget and could have been much better overall dood.

it has a lot of problems that should've been fixed before release but it definitely isn't "meh", it's incredibly fun
It could have used more character mission's, the environments could have looked a bit better, the world sidequest's could have actually been something rather than an infinite set of occurrences that mostly had no real purpose other than some item's and cash and other than gat's and hollywoods mayhem mode everyone else's mayhem was underwhelming both in damage and use, usually being overshadowed by the characters special attack which could be used faster and not leave you totally vulnerable in activation dood
Other than that anyone who complains about glitches in sandbox games don't realise how hard it is to make a game in a big world and find every single problem and even then they had a contingency for it with checkpoint so it worked out (I had issues but it was never a problem) and the gameplay is basic but in the fun way, each character is also different enough that you don't feel like you are playing the same character with a different skin and talking of skins they had some re-colours and actual alternate costumes and the humour was fine, not quite saint's row but well...this isn't really meant to be, so yeah it's a real fun game just with some not that bad problems dood.

3:01 actually when I first played Prototype (and the sequel) it was kind of off-putting that I couldnt steal cars, even though you can sprint over buildings and shit its it still felt weird. In prototype 2 sometimes I'd get bored and disguise myself as a soldier just to stand in the back of troop transport trucks that go near the red-zone to play pretend soldier when zombies inevitably attack and everyone piles out :P

The way agents of mayhem explained its story when it was announced. made me think it'd be a game with more than one city and that maybe 2 or 3 mission chains of the game would be there. Kinda like destroy all humans.

Agents of Mayhem is derived from the retcon ending of Gat out of Hell. So yeah they are trying to set up a new IP without abandoning anything from the SR universe.

This game sounds like a really big "meh". The entire premise sounds and looks overdone already. Sounds like SR3 with a smaller sandbox and potentially more boring characters.
I wish they made a Nyteblade spinoff instead. They already have a general aesthetic of what the game could look like seeing the Nyteblade costumes in SR3; not to mention a general plot and some characters heard from in game radio commercials.
Going the Nyteblade route just seems to have more life and potential to it than this.
I actually had that toy car map when I was younger. Never remembered it until now.

the only thing i prefer sr2 to sr4 is the city itself.
stillwater is bloody fantastic, even after all this time. steelport.... well. it doesnt have nearly the interiors or variety that stillwater has. it isnt a bad city, but it isnt the best the series ever had.
i love sr2, don't misunderstand me. but....
while i love sr2, city aside, it hasnt aged... well. i mean, the city looks fine, but the character models (particularly your own, whenever they have any expression other than blank or when they open their mouths) they look... wrong.
i prefer sr4 visually... at least for the models.
that, and.... i think the super powers are fun to use. like... REALLY fun. way more fun than driving even the fastest car or having the best guns in sr2.
and...... i think the story of sr2 and sr4 are BOTH as good as the other. the only difference is the tone. sr2s tone is different... very different from the rest of the game. sr4... while yes, it is silly... fits with what the game is trying to be. and unlike 3, the sex jokes are fewer and farther between.
personally, i prefer 4. but 2 is still a very good game. think we can both agree. agents of mayhem isnt nearly as good as either of them.

i am not saying sr2 is a bad game at all, far from it. i just think people are being too unfair to sr4. it's like zelda 2 in how many people unfairly bash it. it's different, but it isn't a BAD game at all. but everyone whines how it "is too silly" or, "story just isnt as good." it annoys me greatly.
personally, my dream sr5 city would be sr2s level of detail and sr4s superpowered-inspired hijinx.
i'd like a city that is a historical mishmash of different time periods... including... yes... stillwater.

Yahtzee mentions how a single player hero shooter doesn't work in practice. If you wanted to make a hero shooter that can be played by one player, the best way to do that is to have individual stories for characters.
Oh, yeah...I forgot about that. Sad that it no longer exists.
For a single-player hero shooter, I envisioned the individual stories to be more like Dead or Alive 2, where each individual character has their own story mode. I think it could work for a hero shooter. This generally means sacrificing the amount of characters, but it's a case of "quality over quantity".
Since we're never going to get the Saints Row 5 that was specifically teased during one of the Gat out of HeII endings because of the reboot this year, this basically means that as far as the original Saints Row series is concerned, the ending that split the SR universe and lead to Agents of Mayhem is...arguably the canon one? That's kind of a weird thought.
I believe the level of snark and political commentary has reached a new level. I was laughing so hard my cats decided to find somewhere else to sleep for a bit. No intention of playing the game but I will watch this video whenever I'm feeling down for sure. Thank You for that.
Gat out of Hell had multiple possible endings: resetting the Earth and the Saint's Row crew being police/special government team; humanity finding a planet to colonize, then aliens show up to fight them; the other two I forget. Agents of Mayhem, especially with Johnny Gat DLC, seems to be the Earth reset as canon; since the team used the Saint's symbol in that ending and now these guys do.
My theory: Agents of Mayhem (the game itself) exists in-universe. It's one of those media spinoffs about the Saints from their sellout phase.

The reason for Johnnys different backstory is in gat out of hell one of the endings was to RESET the world and in that timeline he's a cop with a few other people with the gang
This universe exists because of the "Gat out of hell" ending in which he ask God to reconstruct the earth and change the destiny of the saints, making them cop, heroes and vigilantes.

Am I the only one who feels like 2017 is one of the best games in gaming (or at least in the recent memory). Just think about it.
Persona 5, Nioh, LOZ, RE7, Injustice, Tekken, Gravity Rush 2, Prey, Yakuza 0 (and Kiwami), Sonic Mania and many more. Plus there are a lot of games like Mario Oddessey that are yet to come out.
oh, and don´t forget KNACK 2 BAYBEEEEEEEE, GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME, EVEN BETTER THAN SUPER MARIO BROTHERS 2
btw, I really hope Yahtzee does a review of knack 2, just to see him mention Dunkey. Since they are my 2 favorite video game channels, it would be like a Watch the Throne of the youtube gaming community.

incase anyone thinks the Johnny gat and Peirce in different roles thing feels random, its a call back to one of the Endintron 5000 endings in Saints Row Gat out of Hell, where Johnny got a wish from God to restart everything and ends up with a reality where he, Peirce, and Shandi are cops instead of criminals.

Even fricking GI Joe characters can get decent stories that make them more human with the right writers (see "GI Joe: Renegades").
As for the underground villain bases, you missed an opportunity to just say they're using North Korea's failed attempts to drill into South Korea to deploy troops. (it was done, yes.)

To be honest, as a person who never played Saints Row until, well, I think this year, I liked 3 more than 4, and I got 2 for free but I haven't played it, but they say 2 or 3 is the best, I'm not sure.
Leveling up to get better at the game. The game being leveling up characters. Yahtzee would quite 'like' Progress Quest.

Mr.yahtzee, It's a little off topic but, South Korea Government actually dig the undergrounds and made bunkers, Underground Bases in Seoul Back 20th Century. So, this game is kinda logical :D
