- I show how I go about getting an MTD chipper shredder (model 242A645) with a 5hp Briggs and Stratton 30212 engine running and tuned up. This is part 2 where I show highlights from the reassembly process and do a first start up (cold start) and test of the machine.
I will add this comment to detail order to remove the carb and tank:
1. remove air cleaner and cover - there are 4 bolts under there, remove these
2. Looking at top of carb - there are two bolts that hold both the carb to the tank and the bracket that holds the choke and throttle level assemble - remove these bolts -- note there are 5 bolts that screw into tank -- this is only two of them.
3. Lift up the choke/throttle bracket - disconnect the grounding wire for the off and then twist the bracket to get the choke linkage off the choke level - keep bracket up.
4. With bracket up you can disconnect two bolts that hold carb to engine block.
5. there's a bolt on the bottom of bracket -- you can remove wheel to replace or use a flexible ratchet.
6. pull tank/carb assembly off - disconnect the spring first, then bend down the tank/carb assembly to un do the linkage
7. you can then on the bench remove the rest of the bolts holding carb to the tank - note heat shield on the muffler side. All bolts are same length except the one that goes thru the carb.
8. I swapped out carb with a new $29 one from EBAY -- you will need to transfer over linkage and note that many of these ebay replacement cards have metric threaded holes and not SAE like the original so have an assortment of bolts that you can adapt.
9. Note that when I took this apart I took a lot of pictures of the linkages etc because that's always the challenge to get it back right.
10. Assemble reverse order --- remember to reinstall heat shield and when putting the throttle assembly back there is a pin that goes thru the wire throttle linkage - make sure that its back in ...I missed that first time. And remember the off wire has to attache to the switch too.
Note on my new carb after about a 1hr it stopped working -- I tool it apart and found that the brass feed tube can come loose -- I installed it again and penned it in. I did find the old carb has issue with the pump - so i will order the diaphragm pump kit too just to rebuilt the old one. The old carb has a low speed throttle adjust - on the new one its fixed but it seems to work.
Seems to work well now -- thanks seven forty one for posting this video .. it was very handy.
Thanks for filling in the details Harold!
I strongly recommend that you sharpen the blades if the machine is not sucking sticks in automatically it means that the blade are not Sharp. Also freshly cut sticks are a lot easier to chip. great video by the way
Thanks for the tips!
I had this same model. It was losing power, and the reason was the cylinder was ok at the top but very much too wide
at the bottom. As the piston would travel up, the rings would compress, down and they would loosen. So the bore was
shot and the piston was shot because the ring grooves were worn out. Normally Briggs Engines have been pretty good, but
this 5 horse was a real stinker.
I'll be posting videos soon on my mtd shredder Briggs and Stratton engine rebuild. The thing Sat for 15 years untouched. So it was quite the overhaul.
I would have liked to see the linkage and spring attachments at lower part of tank. I did carb and tank replace and now have all fast or nothing on speed I can see the spring at the bottom has come loose at one end and it looks slightly stretched, so maybe I had it mounted wrong. I expect I'll have to loosen or remove carb from engine and loosen the mounting nut at tank bottom to figure out how to reattach the spring. Also it seems I've seen two spring configurations down there in different videos. I saw a horizontal spring on the movable mechanism on tank bottom, but your spring seems to be vertical.
I took mine apart too replace the carburetor. New carb arrived with no instructions about how too install linkage that was modified. None of it makes sense. Is there an instruction sheet showing how too set it up? I also need some of the linkage that was lost.
Sorry, I don't have any info beyond what's shown in this video
Where does the stop wire plug into. Mine isn’t plugged into anything and my wood chipper won’t start
There is usually a little tab on the carburetor someplace.
Can you put branches on the other side? I recently had my machine serviced, and blades replaced. Now I can’t put branches in there. The service technician said that is where only leaves and twigs go, and that’s probably why the original blade got damaged in the first place.
🤷♂️
Absolutely not! Branches can only go in the smaller chute. I urge you to find an owners manual and read up on how to use these machines. If used incorrectly, these machines can kill you.
Mine has no spark, would this be a bad coil ?
Maybe...hard to say
How do you check and change the oil in this modle
Very helpful video. I borrowed someone's chipper/shredder of the same model and found the same thing you did: it didn't want to start and appeared to be struggling to get fuel.
What did you use to get the two bolts off that hold the carburetor to engine (the torx ones)? I cannot get any of my torx or socket wrenches in there.
I'm glad the video was helpful for you. Unfortunatley, even after watching this again, I don't remeber how I got those bolts off. I may have used an extension on the top engine bolt, and may have loosened the carb to tank bolts so the tank would slide down and provide some clearance for the bottom engine bolt. It looks like a regular box wrench would fit in there too.
SevenFortyOne I borrowed a thin box wrench and the bolts came right off.
Once I got the housing off that covered the diaphragm, I found the same thing you did: the diaphragm was torn. In my case, it was one of the fingers that covered the valves. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos; they were very helpful.
Luke Murphey use a wrench or vicsrips and lock them on real tight and see if you can get them loosend
Both videos were good! Thanks!
Could you please tell me what Briggs and Stratton engine model you used to find parts and info on that engine? I typed in the model, type and code from the engine data plate (model 135212 type 1195E1 code 980227YA) but can’t get info from that? Thanks again for the video!
I don't recall what I showed in the vid or what I did to get parts for this. If I didn't use the numbers on the engine, I may have gone to Sears parts direct and looked up the model of the chipper there. Parts direct has exploded diagrams and part numbers listed an I either bought direct from them or copied their part numbers and searched another site or Amazon.
SevenFortyOne Thanks for the quick reply.
Did you end up sharpening those blades after all, or are you still running that chipper the way it came?
Ok bud got a question for you. I've done a lot to this engine. But it's still not starting. It turns over, has a new plug. Rebuilt the carburetor, redid the intake valve and exhaust valve. New fuel tank. New valve cover/header gasket. It turns over. But it seems like it's not getting a spark. Do you think maybe a new armature?
I don't remember the exact configuration of the ignition on this engine ... but if this has a coil mounted close to the flywheel it could be out of alignment or simply bad. There may be an electronic module and/or capacitor to check as well. Also, don't forget to check the "kill switch" wire that shunts the ignition to ground when you close the throttle. If that's out of adjustment and shorting when the throttle is open, you'll lose spark. Pull the plug, ground the body of the plug to the engine someplace (you may need to scrape some paint off or use an alligator clip lead to achieve a good connection) then use the pull cord to spin the engine and see if you are getting spark.
SevenFortyOne sounds good. Dang man great response to. Thanks. I'll let you know how it goes.
U.S. SURVIVAL AND HOMESTEADING it also could be the magnets on the flywheel I had the same problem a while ago with a different engine if you by a magneto and set the armature air gap so if those don't work get a new flywheel and then see if you have spark if you need anything else just ask me I very good at this kind of stuff I go school for it and now I'm off to small engine diesels
I have the same exact chipper. But I have rust in the tank. Any suggestions? Without buy a new 108.00 tank.
First take the tank off and flush out as much rust as you can. Use Kerosene, Gasoline, or some other solvent. Make sure it is fully dry then coat the inside with something like POR-15. DO a search for "Gas Tank Sealant" and you'll find lots of products to chose from.
SevenFortyOne thank you. I'll definitely try it.
+SevenFortyOne I use nuts and bolts and soapy water
Bought this same unit at a swap meet, would run as long as I put gas in it, just like in this video. Now it locked up and I'm probably going to have to rebuild it , since a replacement engine is about $600-650. UGH
Hey ik this is a old video and all but do you know where I could find torque specs I had to replace the head gasket on mine and I can't find the repair manual anywhere
Sorry I don't have torque specs nor do I know where to get the factory recommendations. Generic specs from a Google search may be close enough.,
SevenFortyOne ok thank you I looked on Google but couldn't find them but thanks for the feed back I subbed by the way
TJ'ZZ WORLD thanks! BTW, did you try the Sears parts direct website? You may be able to find some info there for your machine.
SevenFortyOne yea but they only have parts and diagrams I need a repair manual so I can torque the head back down
Did you search for specs under MTD or Briggs & Stratton? It might make a difference for the engine parts.
I know it's been a while since you did this.... but do you remember a fuel filter by any chance? .... mine was running within the week.... now it won't run... using starting fluid starts right up... so fuel is not getting to it..
I don't have this machine anymore but I'm fairly certain there was no separate fuel filter. However, there may be a simple screen someplace either where the fule line goes into the tank or into the carburetor that acts as a fuel filter. Also, there is almost always a screen on the fuel pickup tube inside the carburetor. Chances are you will need to pull the carb and clean it. Good Luck!
What oil does this chipper take? sae30??
M T 10w30
needs new spring for governor
That's not the original motor. They had a Tecumseh 8 HP engine
Yes, it's the original engine
Sorry Drew, I have the same chipper, same condition and it also has same 5hp. Briggs. Use it as intended and it's great. Love it.
the background noise..ugh..
I know...I was a rookie when I recorded this and dint pay attention to those things back then
These MTD chippers are a very poor design. You should not have to push on sticks.
Complete garbage just buy a hanser
Bought mine used 15 yrs. ago and still runs fantastic. Never had to do anything to it.
