  • In today’s ‘Move Smartly Ideas’ episode, my colleague and co-host John Pasalis takes us on a tour of sunny Athens and tells us about the history of its housing and what we can learn from it as many make the case for more lower-rise high-density buildings in Toronto and other Canadian cities.

Good video. Another thing to consider is that apartments are built differently due to building materials used. Because we build with mostly wood we need 2 fire escapes in each building. Build with stone or concrete, and we only need one fire escape. THis means we dont need a connecting corridoor and can have front to back units with windows on BOTH sides of the condo, making them much more liveable.

Moreover a brick-or-concrete structure is much quieter.

A housing commentator is a great idea!
A key problem is land cost here. Have you guys read the work of Patrick Condon? I recommend highly

Great show guys!! So familiar of how home ownership/building in Greece is similar in Italy. My grandfather was a builder in his home town in a small Italian town in southern Italy.
Beautiful shots of Greece. Always a dream of mine to spend months there at some point of my life. All because of the message in the famous Italian movie - Mediterraneo. I think you’ll love it.

Taxing home equity in Canada could potentially lead to a significant increase in properties coming onto the market, with estimates suggesting up to 4 million homes could be listed for sale over the next seven years. There are currently rumors circulating within the real estate industry regarding this possibility.

Very informative. I wonder how much it would cost to build like that simple concrete block in Canada?
Would it be possible to get permit even?

I'm not sure what difference changing the building costs by 10-15% makes if governments just jack up DCC fees 50%

Not to mention the complete disrespect of indigenous peoples being on the land first and conquering it.

This is a very segregated mindset of still colonialism thinking about what Canada can learn from Europe. Dig deeper and the answers would be found in ancient African approaches to civilization since most came from Africans globally.. nevertheless.... Canada will not learn because the mindset is very capitalistic in terms of growth. Which is shameful. Until we change our views of humanity nothing will change. A new system needs to be developed.
