The KA24DE is an excellent engine. People that improperly prepared/built their engines, causing it to fail, gave it a bad reputation for turbocharging. In the last 4 or 5 years people have started building them properly so we're getting to see what it can really do.
The KA24E may have less stock horsepower than the DE, but I've seen it be very stout when turbocharged. There's no reason to get a DE if you have an E when you want to go turbo.
last 4 or 5 years? they've been building them right for the last 10 or more... but all sr and KA are getting ancient and there is no "good one" especially with technology available now. we will need to find modern alternatives.
The KA24DE is very Underrated! Obviously If people don't know how to tune this engine in a properly way, it will fail. Remember it's always the owner, not the machine
"not worth swaping the KA for 300~hp" goes and buys a 240 and swap a 2jz in it for almost the same amount of hp lol

I would like the 240sx's more if 75% of the owners were not hipster swag people....who just buy them because they think they can drift. Not sayin everyone is like that but.....there is toooo many people like that around.
I've seen a few people say that here and there, but every time I've gone to a meet the 240sx are the nicest ones there. I asked a lot of them for rides and a few have said no, but more of them said yes to me. I mean it was a quick pull on the freeway and back, but still you know. It's always the Honda owners that are trying to race and are doing burnouts in the parking lot for attention. Don't get me wrong I own Honda myself, but people like that is why Hondas have such a bad rep... Maybe it's just in my area.

"Real" kouki front doesn't include cheap fiberglass bodykits. I'm sorry, but I'm a 240SX snob. I've had my 95 S14 since 2005 and don't plan to give it up anytime soon. Also, let me drop some knowledge about the KA24DE: It's based on the L24 straight-six from the original Datsun 240Z, the first automobile it was ever put in was a 240SX (then came the Altima and Hardbody), so calling it a "truck motor" is incorrect. The KAs that were installed in 240SXs were built in Japan, all others in Mexico. Nissan did not bring the SR20DET to the USA because of emissions and cost reasons.

There have been reports of the ka-t engines taking 400hp on slightly modded internals. Whereas the sr has you limited to right around 340 or 350

Love the 240s! Such a great Japanese car. RWD and the turbo can be really fun off that 4cyl. IIRC the SR20s come stock with a built bottom end, not sure if the KAs do as well. I guess if you keep the power upgrades modest it's not too much a danger to boost an un built KA. Not normally a fan of too many body kits but, this one looks tasteful and not too overdone. I must admit I do love some turbo lag but overall, I give this car a solid 7/10. I would tone down the bodywork just a tad bit and really upgrade those wheels but, of course they are better than stock. Very well done car and the interior held up nicely as well. Thumbs up to the owner.
KA's do have a forged bottom end. You can boost the hell out of them even on stock internals as long as it has a good tune, you'll destroy the trany and driveshaft before the engine goes. Best things about the KA are torque and they're cheap. They get a bad rep since they don't redline as high as the SR does but I would take a KA over an SR, still got one in my s13 and will be turboing it soon
Sox4life That's pretty interesting. Aren't the KAs a 2.4L? That would definitely be better for more torque as well. Are there any aftermarket heads available for the KA?

Yeah they're 2.4 There's not really any point to build a KA unless you want to make some ridiculous amount of power. There's people out there who run around 30psi on stock internals with 500+ rwhp. There's no aftermarket heads that I've ever heard of, people just take it to a machine shop
Sox4life Gotcha. I'm sure that would definitely help with extending the redline, along with some stronger valves, springes, yadda yadda. On the KAs, are the pistons, rods and crank all forged?

Its technically not "The truck motor" it was actually in the 240 before it was in the truck .
But it's a dual cam motor based on the single cam motor that was originally from the truck... It's nothing to be ashamed of, it was that or not have the car here and we already miss out on enough cars as is.
The z24 from the datsun pickup is the predecessor to the ka. It's a truck engine.
why because its a 16v 2.4 4 cylinder with dual spark that shares ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WITH A KA? lol
People easily confuse the napz and z24 as being the "predecessor" all the time just because they take a quick uneducated glance at the hardbody, glance back over at the frontier, then glance back over at the hardbody and do this "derrr.. 2.4... new one also 2.4... derrr predecessor!"

Technically the KA can trace its lineage to the original L series introduced in 1968.

+Mike Pileggi Great question. If yo want a more torque like feeling- the KA. The SR is much more dramatic with a build up until you hit power up top. The RB25 stock is a good equal medium. I still was blown away by how fun this setup was when it's so underrated.

+Nick DiNunzio Yeah but if you consider it, a proper turbo swap on a KA will be 100X funner than swapping a stock sr20, which will be the same price. If your KA is reliable that is. I only swapped my KA out because it never started once the temp hit 10 degrees celcius

The ka24E was the truck engine because it was 1st put into the hardbody ... Then it was put in the 89 & 90 nissan 240sx ... as the pig nose SOHC motor
the ka24"D"e was 1st put in the 91 240sx as the DOHC.... THEN put into the 1st model Frontier which was introduced in 98 ....
So you guys just got ka24e & ka24de school 101 ...

I would NEVER give up the instant torque this motor gives, i don't want to wait for the power to kick in like the SR20... I don't care about top end power, what i care for and what i want is that when i step on it, IT FUCKING MOVES ....

LOVE the car, but I can hardly look at that front bumper... It takes away from the fluidity of the S14's body lines. So nice to see the big 2.4l KA shown some love though! Ive always liked KA's ever since I realized they could push out 250whp with TONS of torque on a bone stock block.
The KA24de is really under rated. 1320 racing channel has a video of a 600 plus hp Honda crx that was beating some high hp cars and a ka24det 240sx walked it like it was sitting still. Wish I would have never sold mine now LOL !
They can be monsters. My friend had one built on 16.5 psi making over 400 on pump gas.

the S14 is one very sexy car, But I think they lost a lot of light feel of the s13, they drive very differently and feel much different, a turbo KA is one very capable motor. 300-500hp is very doable.

Hey awesome review of the 240sx with KA24DEi was hoping you could do a 2003 Subaru WRX or STi "Bugeyes" review it would mean alot keep up the good work bro.
Watching this video in 2023 and seeing now KA24DE's making upwards of 600+HP and being more reliable then SR's is hilarious! I'm glad KA's are finally getting the support they deserve.
I'd go KA24DET over SR20DET for sure. Dollar for dollar, a KA24 will out perform a SR20. 1) 300+ hp on stock internals 2) TORQUE 3) Quicker boost and higher boost threshold. You can buy a 240sx and build the engine, gt30 sized turbo and supporting mods and get up to 400+whp for the same price it would be to have a shop swap in a BONE STOCK 180whp SR20DET. Think about that one...
What's with the crappy looking aftermarket headlights? One of the best things about the S14.5 is the mean looking projector headlights. Those on the car now are a downgrade.
its not pronounced "kookie" for fucks sake its 2015 and america is still failing. Its KOH-KEY. The "ou" is pronounced with a long "O" NOT a short "o" like "cool". Every time hear Kookie I know its a band wagoner. The KA has proven itself for over a decade now. I feel like this video is repeating things known since 2003. 4 thumbs down.
I want a S14 so bad! I'd get a S13 also, but it would have to be a coupe with a dual cam motor. I'd def keep the KA and turbo it with a T28. If I did swap it, it would be a NA USDM motor like a VQ35 or 1UZ to keep things simple and 100% reliable at all times. The problem with JDM motors is that you have to ORDER your parts through the mail, you cant drive down to auto zone for a new gasket, that will take at least a week!! Thats a huge downfall of JDM motors, parts availability. Its the exact reason why people with JDM motors only drive them once a month!
Going KA-T isn't a bad idea, you can make good HP but the set up has to be done right and tuned perfect, otherwise you end up having issues. The SR is more reliable. Take it from experience. However even the SR has its limits. If you want to stick to "all Nissan" go with an RB25 and get it over with, If not go with an LS! Fun and reliable HP right out of the box.... As for the brakes on a 240sx, they have undersized brakes and when you start making over 300 HP you need something that can stop it, if you have the cash go with Brembo's if not go with Z32 300zx brake swap.
Really getting sick of mainstream people calling the 240sx KA24 a truck motor. It's made in Japan and totally different from the truck's Mexico variant... Is the Corvette LS a truck motor? It's found in GM Vans and trucks. Is the 350z VQ a truck motor? It's found in Nissan trucks and minivans. Just because it shares the same architecture does not mean it's the same motor as a truck...

SR2.0 vs 2.4KA - as stated in the SUPER STREET 240 issue. the only advantage of a SR swap is that the market is flooded with parts 4 the SR, the KA is limited but with a lil knowledge u can make a KA be way better that an SR. i'll take the 2.4, bigger is better... TORQUE
Ya know. The QR25 (that was in the Sentra you reviewed) is hands down the torque motor when it comes to Nissan four bangers. However I doubt you'll ever find one in a 240. At least not any time soon. That's probly the most expensive swap you could do as far as four bangers. And if you wanted big hp then SR is still the way to go. But anyway....just saying the QR makes monstrous torque.
Nice review. KAs get no love. It was great in my truck. My truck ate plenty of Hondas. It does make good torque. Torque rules. People with no torque just don't realize.

I love these cars c: I have a 97 S14 Silvia that I imported about a year ago. Came with an sr20det like all jdm ones had, swapped it to an Rb25det neo. Can honestly say its my favorite car to drive. I love the look, power, functionality, "tuneability" and affordability. It makes me happy c: ...I just wonder why Nissan decided to put uglier headlights in the usdm ones... my opinion of course but really- the jdm headlights are so nice and way more aggressive looking.
LOL! Classic charge pipe! I have yet to drive a turbo 240 that didn't have a charge pipe slide off at some point. I have an SR Sil-Coupe that I popped the charge pipe while not carrying any tools with me. (rookie mistake, I know) Luckily, as with any proper 240, I had some zip-ties so I slid the coupler back on, zip-tied it on the best I could and made damn sure I didn't hit boost on the way back.
KAs will turn seven grand if you defeat the limiter, but there's no point unless you re-cam.
240s feel extra-torquey because they have 4.08:1 gears, except the S15 Silvia K's which has 3.73s. That makes them gear-limited to 124 mph with the stock tire size, but since they're electronically limited to 115 this doesn't really matter on the street.

Think about it.... Hp=torque x rpm / 5252
Of course it will feel like more torque. Nearly half a liter over a sr20. The sr20 will likely make more hp easier, duh. Will make much more rpm easier. Therefore a higher hp number. When actually the 'Power' (torque) will likely be a bit greater.
If u remove a ka for Sr 20 u can't build engines sorry.

Mine 42cold 38 hot 19psi dynoed 645hp 700tq built engine work with the fuel system port and polishing a little cam work and ignition work which was expensive but went through a shit machine shop a1 automotive in ABQ. They lied about fixing my crank and installed it again after having a spun bearing
not gonna be too anal about this because in Hawaii (where i live) 80% of the population is Japanese, but this is the very FIRST time i heard kouki pronounced incorrectly.
it is how you would pernounce "Coke" plus "key". So if you say coke key really fast, that would be correct.
I beat the holy fuck out of my '96 se vlsd. Daily drifting and rally racing in gravel/dirt roads for like the 15 years. Literally every day. Redlined every shift, clutch kicked the shit outta it. Only problems I ever had was shocks going out, water pump, and knock sensor. 5 lug and abs, it held up amazing. They are strong reliable cars. I dont know why ppl say you work on em all the time. Those people must be bad drivers or bought a hoopty.

I enjoy your reviews, However just wanted to mention that Kouki isn't pronounced "cookie" its pronounced "Gowki" I know its confusing but the Letter K sounds like The english G.. same goes for the word "Kung Fu"
hello I have a 2000 Nissan altima Se with the KA24de that i would like to build and turbo, im mechnically inclined and do ALL repairs to my vehicle as needed. the problem im having which holds me back is (The tune) can my current ECU be tuned or do i need to go aftermarket, cuz the aftermarket ecus i see for sale are about $1000 where im from
