The Father Who Killed His Family's 'Murderer'

  • Think about this for one moment…
What would it take for you to take someone's life?
What would that person have done to cause you to risk it all and enact revenge by making them pay the ultimate price?
As you watch this video, you have a choice. You can easily ignore the questions I just asked and go about your life like nothing of the sort will ever happen.
But in 2002, a certain Russian Architect and family man named Vitali Kaleyov, did not have that luxury.
With the neck breaking speed of a jumbo jet in freefall, the same questions I asked a few seconds ago crashed at his feet, and after 2 years, the answers he chose to give shocked the entire world.
Tragedy pushed Vitali Kaleyov to his limit and made him commit one of the most controversial acts of murder in recent history.
    A murder that split public opinion in two distinct factions with polar-opposite answers to this particular question;
Was Vitali Kaleyov's murderous act justified?
Welcome or Welcome back to twisted minds. My name is James and today, we are going to deep dive into the controversial, vengeful and absolutely tragic case of Vitaly Kaleyov.

In my opinion, Skyguide added insult to injury by not taking responsibility and apologizing to the families for the tragedy. Clearly they were at fault and they caused the death of their employee by not giving him the chance to succeed with all the obstacles that night.

He killed the wrong person, though. It wasn't Peter's fault that Skyguide had maintenance on the communications equipment that night, or that his colleague literally slept on the job. Nor was he to blame for the disgusting arrogance of the executives at Skyguide. This man was happily awaiting the arrival of his beloved family one moment, and was hurled into unimaginable grief the next. I cried for him watching this video. But it would have been easier for me to empathize with him killing anyone, if he had waited until he knew what happened and who was to blame. He murdered a random guy who just went to work that day and actually did his job the best way he possibly could with the extremely limited options he had. He inflicted the same grief on an innocent family that had been inflicted on him. And he himself is arrogant enough to say that his innocent victim is nothing to him, and minimize the grief of the family who lost a father, husband, son and brother. You'd think he'd be able to show some remorse and empathy to those people whose lives HE shattered, after what he'd been through himself.

What makes this extremely tragic is that both Vitali's family and Peter's family were victims of skyguide running from accountability. If skyguide had sufficient staff on board and the secondary air controller was doing his job the planes wouldn't have collided. If skyguide hadn't covered up their error Vitali would not have held Peter accountable for the situation or go through so much trouble to find him. A Father left without his family and another family left without their Father. I feel especially for peter and his family since more than a few of us know what it's like to work for an irresponsible company who consistently overload their employees with work and responsibility past guidlines. The guy did his best on his own when everything went wrong because of the company and his coworker's negligence. Then he got k*lled when the company did no one knows what to keep him silent by a man who had lost access to all logic and reason because of his grief. I followed the whole case here in Switzerland from day one and I am surprised how every detail in this video corresponds to the results of the investigation published at the time. In my opinion, the Management of Skyguide should have been sentenced much more severe. They tolerated that sometimes a Skycontoller took a break during nightshift which was absolutely illegal. This combined with the maintance on the phone and other systems let to the overwhelming of the Skycontroller with two simple tasks if managed by two Skycontrollers. The arrogance of the management also contributed to the anger of Vitaly. Skygiude has shown in other cases of near collisions and miscommunications a lack of professionalism years ago. I've never heard anything negative in recent years and I hope that they have managed to lift their standarts.

I would blame that on crony capitalism. Had that company apologised, it would mean instant losses, job cuts and probably even a shut down of operations. Imagine all that equipment and software being rendered useless, and their contracts voided, in just one apology. Millions of dollars in investment, probably from private and public enterprises, down the drain. The management would have wieghed the options and would have been pressured not to offer public apologies at that time. So money is the root of all evil here, just as how Jesus said it.
Well the plain russian dont understand capitalism like the west. I have worked with them and I can tell you this, they will die for you. They come off as rude and brut, but they are mostly good honest hard working people. Yes, some do have a bit of a drinking problem :).
Turning to the story, may God bless all of them, and I hope he finds peace with his Maker and meets his family and those 45 children again in his next life.
Somehow, his story reminds me of Job from the bible, where Job was blessed again in his later years after the period of tribulation. I view this whole story as a spiritual subject, where events spiralled out of human hands, and the only human intervention possible was forgiveness, love and compassion. Had that been exhibited from either parties, this would have been completely different and an even greater story.
However, as the bible says, God will make all bad things good, he became a national hero and a person of great importance in his society both in his profession and community. He got all the promises mentioned in the bible. I believe he had strong Christian faith, and his wife too (the part where she prayed for a daughter and finally got one after 7 years), so God gave him exactly what was promised to a believer. So in short, i would say, If money stops anyone from doing the right thing as per his or her concience, they should remind themselves the verse: money is the root of all evil.

He hunted down and killed an innocent man who actually, in the face of adversity from his employer’s and co-worker’s bullshit, tried to resolve the situation and save the people on the planes, including Vitaly’s family. Ballad of Vitaly - Song by American rock band Delta Spirit
In the German sky there once was a plane
It carried 71 children and their mothers to Spain
Well, this plane was sure somethin'
It was full of young Russians
Proudly to gander at topics discussin'
Now Pete the Swiss was doublin' shifts
Jugglin' the iron controlled by his lips
Not a minute too soon children fell to their doom
Struck dead in the air, orphan a father or two
He just laid in the alley
Now orphan Vitaly met a young girl, married her quickly
Was so damn in love that they had their two kids
Had a great job, construction in Spain
They were goin' to see Papa from Caucasus mountain range
Now that damn Swissman crashed them into a plane
I will find where he lives, speak to his face
With the blood in my eyes, he will see my pain
Many weeks passed, for fear of a suit
The airline said nothin', Vitaly turned blue
For the killin' they done, no apology made
Is it 'cause we are Russian you treat us this way?
Through a friend that he new Vitaly found Pete
He came to his doorstep expectin' to speak
But Pete blew him off, threw down the pictures Vi brought
Pictures of the three most important he lost
      As the pictures fell down
      Re-enacting the day
      Vitaly's eye blackened
      No human remained
Well, so much can be said
For a man in his shoes
      There's no glamour in vengeance
      There's only this rule
That the lives that you lost
      Can never come back
      And the deed in return
      Is worse than the act
Blinded by love and the pain of his loss
He could not remember the act of assault
He awoke in his room all covered in blood
The cops they'd come knockin', they knew what he'd done
      The government leaned
      Vitaly was free
They called him the hero, a man above kings
A shadow of man, they were praising his deed
He was alone, killed a father of three
No deed that he did could make him complete
It could have been different if only Pete said
I'm sorry for killin' the few joys you had
But now there's nothin' for Vitaly to do
But step off a cliff or hang in the noose
Robbed of forgiveness that he could've gave

As far as I’m concerned, the unnamed air traffic controller that took the long nap thereby vacating his post, as as well as Sky Guide, were 100% culpable for the disaster. As a husband and father, its not hard to imagine the depth of grief Vitali experienced as a result of his tremendous loss. Had Sky Guide accepted responsibility and not protected the unnamed air traffic controller, perhaps the outcome would have been different. I am not a violent person. Nor do I believe in taking someone’s life, but knowing how much my family means to me, and if no one was accepting responsibility or offered an apology, I think I would take the same desperate and drastic action to uphold my commitment to family as Vitali. They most likely told Peter something like "Shut up, do not speak to anybody, go away. Do this and we will keep paying you and not throw you to the wolves"
With him out of the picture they let the court of public opinion judge Peter and take some of the heat off of themselves.
I think Peter did bear some of the responsibility but only in as much as he let his buddy go for a nap. The major culprit is Skyguide in allowing these practices.

      @poohbeartube ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@loralieisa I agree. Eventually there were consequences for Skyguide's reckless practices. Further research reveals a September 2007 BBC article titled "Four guilty over Swiss air crash".
A Swiss court has found four employees of an air traffic control firm guilty of manslaughter over the deaths of 71 people in a mid-air collision in 2002.
Three of the four managers convicted were given suspended prison terms and the fourth was ordered to pay a fine.
Another four employees of the Skyguide firm were cleared of any wrongdoing.
Prosecutors had said a "culture of negligence" at the firm contributed to the mid-air collision, which killed mostly Russian children.
The charter aircraft carrying Russian children to a holiday in Spain collided with a cargo plane in Swiss airspace on 1 July 2002. The wreckage came down in Germany.
      'Organisational deficiencies'
All eight men on trial had maintained their innocence. Seven had continued working for Skyguide until the time of the verdict.
*The BBC's Imogen Foulkes, in Berne, says it is significant that the four Skyguide employees acquitted were all air traffic controllers - rather than managers.*
*She says this shows the judges backed the prosecution's view that the managers at Skyguide were responsible for introducing negligent, potentially dangerous working practices.*
Two separate investigations have already found what were described as organisational deficiencies within Skyguide. These deficiencies were said to have contributed to the accident.
      Controller stabbed
The trial revealed that minutes before the crash a single air traffic controller was in charge of 15 planes: He made 118 radio contacts with them, and he was guiding a plane into land.
Technical repairs were being carried out and some radar systems were not working.
The air traffic controller in question was later stabbed and killed by the father of two of the children who died.
At the time, Skyguide insisted that having just one air traffic controller on duty was normal - but it has since outlawed the practice, and provided financial compensation to some of the bereaved families.

Yeah- sharing some thoughts. We don't know how truthful was Vitali's description
of Peter's rude indifference. He brought the knife beforehand, so that speaks.
If a stranger showed at your residence, who knows what your state of mind would be, not to regard the stranger as a crackpot?
There is no human being that didn't regret how they treated another
at the wrong time and in the wrong state of mind ( lacking empathy ). Peter, was not privy to the story of how devastated Vitali was, as we were, watching the history of his family.
The solo act at the air traffic controls was on the company's
end regarding responsibility- all the way up the management ladder.
Lastly, how can a company allow for communications to be shut off
when hundreds of lives may depend on it 24 hrs.? A slow air traffic period
is moot, since 2 incidences occurred at the same time. You can't play Russian roulette ( no pun intended ) with the lives of passengers. How can they not implement a back up communications system?

I couldn't make it half way through this story just too sad, knowing what was going to happen and thinking about my own Daughter. So sad.

As someone living in Switzerland I am disgusted how everything in this shitty country is about money. So many lifes lost but Skyguide didnt care cause the didnt want aynthing 2 do with it. Absolute disgrace.

Wow. What a tale. This just shows and proves how corporate greed and arrogance cost the lives of so many people. Shame on Skyguide.
The tomb of Vitali's family is so impressive, and his deep love for them is remarkable. What a man would do for his family. It's incredible.
I do feel bad for Peter and his family. He was simply a hard working man, who was trying to provide for his family.
This story is depressing all around.

The fact that he murdered an innocent man, a father whose children will grow up to see the murderer of their father run free and without punishment is sickening enough.
What makes it even more disturbing is how many people feel empathy for the monster who slaughtered Peter Neilsen - the same people who don't feel any empathy for Peter and his family.
I wonder what they would say, if Peter's children would set out on a similar quest for venegance to kill the murderer of their father. Would it also be justified in their eyes?

Peter should have gone to prison. At least his killer served 3 years.

Yes. I sympathize with Vitaly but if Peter Nielsen's kids went out to kill him, I'd understand

He didn’t find the truth though? The police doing the investigation found out the truth. All he did was conduct his own investigation in which he concluded Peter was to blame. The results of the police investigation would have been released whether or not Vitali had murdered Peter or not. Technically he did the opposite of finding the truth.

Ive listened and have read a lot of disturbing cases involving families but this one hit me the hardest.
I think its because Vitalys actions sound like something both my mother and father would do if they lost my brother and I.
Except my parents most likely would've just chosen violence.
Skyguide is at fault here, they could've just told the families then the media the truth instead of trying to ignore the situation.

Peter was still responsible in a sense for not reporting his shitty colleague to the authorities. His negligence contributed to those deaths because he was a coward who was too lazy to do the right thing.
Only thing that should have changed is Vitali killing the CEO and other technician instead of Peter.

There was absolutely no justice served in this situation, All off those in charge at that company should have gotten life in prison! I imagine that judge has a pretty fat bank account! The only person who served prison time was the man who lost everything!! I would have done the same thing if was him
