    I stumbled upon a nice harmonic sequence to facilitate a key change. Em to D7, then Dm to C7. The minor chord to a dom 7 sound kind of neat. Hey, love your videos, BTW.

    Recently I bought a new notation program where this sort of edit is easy to do, by contrast to Finale where it involves changing from entry mode to edit mode. In the Passport Designs notation programs I used to use it was even easier to do this edit.

  • @frankeisele383
    @frankeisele383 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Hey Ryan, quick question on your course. Is it all taught in musical notation like you do on your videos here? Asking because often these courses are taught within a DAW and looking at those colourful lines never made any sense to me or helped my understanding, so I am looking for a course taught in actual music notation instead. 🙂

    • @RyanLeach
      @RyanLeach  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      At first I was worried you were going to ask the opposite question! But yea it is all done in notation, I agree it is so much better than a DAW piano roll

    • @llamaking1071
      @llamaking1071 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah but I find a lot of the time that's where the melody naturally wants to go (especially in circle of fifths chord progressions).

    Another variant is to transpose by a certain number of steps, modulate to a different key, and play in a different mode. For example, your initial phrase could be in E minor, then you transpose down a step in D major (rather than D mixolydian or D minor).

  • @James_Krom
    @James_Krom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I wonder where the terms sentence and period first started being used in music? It always confuses me because it seems a period can contain 1-2 sentences but a sentence can’t usually contain a period…

    • @RyanLeach
      @RyanLeach  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If it's made up of two periods, Caplin calls it a "compound period" because that makes it more clear that it's made up of two themes. I think Schoenberg is the first one to identify the sentence in his book Fundamentals of Musical Composition
